LIME, Wildey grab last two quarter-final places as Alleyne hits ton in Sagicor General Super Cup

$

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Despite losing to Division 1 team Yorkshire, title holders LIME still managed to grab one of the last two quarter-final places in the BCA Sagicor General Super Cup Championship.

And the ninth and last preliminary series was marked by a maiden century from Anthony Alleyne, the Sagicor Life UWI opener - a feat which set a new record of 14 hundreds in a season, with the tournament now in its 40th year.

LIME lost by five wickets at Friendship but their fourth place in Zone 'A' was confirmed after Police, the only other contenders going into the series, were crushed by 160 runs by UWI at Weymouth.

Wildey snatched the last place in Zone 'B' with a seven-wicket win over fellow contenders YMPC as early as 2:36 p.m. but there was much more intrigue as they had to await the outcome of the battle between CounterPoint Wanderers and ICBL Empire at Dayrells Road.

Wanderers, who then needed to win by a wide margin and better the net run rate of Wildey, went under by two wickets after putting up a fight.

Wildey and Yorkshire are the only First division teams in the last eight. Wildey (formerly known as Banks and Banks Wildey) recently captured the league (three-day) Championship and will be promoted to the Elite division in 2015.

Yorkshire are the only team to win both the Cup and Shield Championships in one season (1983) in an era of a straight knockout when lower division teams, who reached the semi-finals of the Shield, contested the Cup as well.

ZONE A

At Weymouth:

Opener Anthony Alleyne sustained his recent 50-over form with a maiden century which laid the foundation for an easy win by 160 runs for UWI over Police.

Left-hander Alleyne hit 109 off 143 balls as he batted almost the entire innings in a total of 237 all out off 49.4 overs after UWI won the toss.

Alleyne struck just one four and two sixes in his 143-ball knock before he was ninth out with the score 232 after 48.5 overs.

With veteran and captain Floyd Reifer, who made 46 off 57 balls with two fours and two sixes, Alleyne added 80 in 16.2 overs for the fourth wicket.

Alleyne now has an aggregate of 323 runs, at an average of 46.14.

Kyle Corbin, who made 20 in an opening stand of 29 in 6.5 overs, took his aggregate to 320 (ave: 45.71).

Fast bowler Trevor Ifill picked up four for 45 off 8.4 overs and Chad Linton, three for 33 off eight overs.

Police lost wickets steadily and were bowled out for 77 in 25.3 overs.

Captain Larry Babb topscored with 22 off 35 balls including two sixes.

Pacer Dawayne Sealy, the last of four bowlers used, took three for 18 off five overs and seamer, Linton Buchanan, two for 25 off eight overs. Three batsmen were run out.

At Bayfield:

Experienced all-rounder Derick Bishop starred with both ball and bat as Brathwaite Construction/Republic Bank St. Catherine demolished Glassesco BCL by seven wickets to finish as the only team to win all of their matches.

Bishop snatched four for 20 off 7.1 overs as BCL fell for just 72 in 25.1 overs after winning the toss.

Pacer Ulric Batson, who used the new ball with Bishop, took three for six off five overs.

Seasoned batsman Kamal Turney, batting as low as No. 10, topscored with 18 off 29 balls including two fours and one six.

Batson and Bishop then opened the batting as well - a very, very rare feat in any form of cricket - putting on 70 in just 6.5 overs before St. Catherine raced to victory as early as one minute before noon.

Bishop made 43 off 29 balls with seven fours and one six and Batson 24 off 18 deliveries including two fours and one six.

Darien Seale took two for 35 off five overs.

It was yet another pathetic season for BCL, who were the only team without a win and whose score was the fourth time they were dismissed for under 100 in this year's tournament.

At Desmond Haynes Oval:

Digicel Carlton won by default from Ince Transport MTW, who were unable to field a team, reportedly because of illness.

Play was officially called off shortly before 9:30 a.m.

At Friendship:

In a match of twists and turns, exciting all-rounder Ravendra Persaud made his presence felt with a swashbuckling, unbeaten 84 as Yorkshire beat LIME by five wickets.

Persaud, who bats right-handed and bowls either left-arm medium-pace or spin, went to the crease with Yorkshire in some bother on 111 for five in the 28th over, chasing 214 to win in 50 overs.

Recently back from an overseas professional contract, Persaud easily dominated a partnership of 103 with Jamar Layne, smashing nine sixes and five fours in his 38-ball innings.

Layne made 26 not out.

Kevin Ramsay, with 47 off 71 balls including four fours and two sixes and Armani Best, who made 38 from 40 deliveries containing three sixes and one four, added 66 in 11.3 overs for the second wicket before a slump set in.

But Layne and Persaud piloted the home side home with as many as 9.3 overs to spare.

Off-spinner Nekoli Parris took two for 25 off ten overs including four maidens.

LIME were bowled out for 213 in 47.2 overs after winning the toss.

Fast bowling all-rounder Javon Searles topscored with 47 off 61 balls including two fours and one six at No. 5.

Jason Hinds (36) and Justin Brathwaite (20) put on 58 in 12.1 overs for the first wicket, while Parris made 31.

Alex Browne, with a brisk 28 off 20 balls containing three sixes and one four, featured in a 52-run fifth wicket stand in 5.5 overs with Searles.

Former Barbados all-rounder Antonio "Dixie" Mayers took four for 41 off ten overs with his medium-pace, while ex-Combined Campuses & Colleges fast bowler Jamel Noel, picked up three for 41 off 7.2 overs.

ZONE B

At Church Hill:

In a match of only academic interest and featuring two Christ Church teams, BDFSP beat Caribbean Alliance/Akobah Gardens Foundation by 97 runs.

Led by 75 off 89 balls including ten boundaries, BDFSP amassed the highest total of the series - 264 for nine off 50 overs following the luck of the toss.

All-rounder Kemar Smith, the brother of West Indies One-Day and Twenty20 player, Dwayne Smith, enjoyed himself with a knock of 46 off 32 balls containing seven fours and one six, while opener Mario Rampersaud made 43 off 62 deliveries with five fours.

Romario Hermas took three for 42 off six overs and left-arm spinner Pius Emilien, who is also a talented athlete, had two for 47 off nine overs.

Foundation were bowled out for 167 in 45.4 overs.

Wicket-keeper/batsman Carlos Maynard topscored with 41 off 72 balls including three boundaries and opener Shomari Davis made 33 from 30 deliveries with five fours.

Rico Wiggins took three for 20 off ten overs and off-spinner Renaldo Brathwaite, two for 17 off five overs.

At Dayrells Road:

Wanderers knew this was always going to be a tough match with themselves, Wildey and YMPC all needing a win as well as lifting their Net Run Rates to stand of chance of reaching the knockout stage.

With Wildey wiping out YMPC at the SJPP ground as early as 2:36 p.m, the attention turned to Dayrells Road and there was certainly a lot of ifs and buts for Wanderers, who ultimately lost by two wickets.

Chasing 171 to win in 48 overs - the match started late at 9:38 a.m. due to the ground being handed over late - Empire were tottering on 129 for eight in the 36th over before oldstager Ryan Hinds and left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, who continues to show that he is no slouch with the bat, guided their team home with a stand of 45 in 7.4 overs.

Hinds was unbeaten on 38 off 49 balls with four boundaries, while Warrican made 18 not out from 26 balls, striking one four and one six.

Wicket-keeper Andre Roach topscored with 39 off 81 deliveries at No. 3. He hit four boundaries.

Roach and all-rounder Roston Chase, who made 37 off 45 balls with three fours, put on 82 in 17.3 overs for the third wicket.

Leg-spinner Nikolai Charles and left-arm medium-pacer Ian Bradshaw each took two for 28 off ten overs, while new ball pair, Kevin McClean had two for 39 off 8.1 overs and West Indies player Jason Holder, two for 41 off nine overs.

Wanderers fell for 171 in 42 overs after winning the toss.

Diego Stuart's unbeaten 38 off 55 balls with five fours and one six at No. 7 was the topscore. Jonathan Drakes made 37 off 54 balls, opener Craig Holder 27 from the same number of deliveries and Renaldo Arthur, 21 off 51 balls.

Warrican took two for 16 off ten overs, off-spinner Chase, two for 17 off seven overs and left-arm spinner Hinds, two for 26 off six overs.

At SJPP, Pine/Wildey:

Willdey overcame a few early scares to beat YMPC by seven wickets as early as 2:36 p.m.

Needing 116 to win in 50 overs, the home side slipped to ten for three in the fourth over before Kofie Hurdle and Marlon Barclay gradually eased their nerves and took them to victory as early as 2:36 p.m. with an unbroken stand of 106 in 21.4 overs.

Hurdle topscored with an unbeaten 70 off 85 balls, hitting eight fours and two sixes, while Trinidadian Barclay made 31 not out from 51 deliveries with two fours.

Medium-pacer Amal Nurse took two for 38 off eight overs.

YMPC were bowled out for 115 in 35.5 overs after winning the toss.

Opener Jeremy Brathwaite and Steven Blackett at No. 7, were the joint topscorers with 21.

Left-arm spinner Khary Pierre, a Trinidadian, took three for 23 off eight overs, pacer Akeem Jordan, two for 22 off five overs and off-spinner Marlon Hoyte, two for 29 off ten overs.

At Lester Vaughan, Cane Garden:

Opener Shane Parris hit an unbeaten 62 to spur CGI Maple to a seven-wicket win over Guardian General Barbados Youth.

Parris struck nine fours and one six in his 64-ball knock as Maple easily reached a target of 112 from 50 overs in 20.5 overs.

Barbados Youth fell for 111 in 29.5 overs after they were sent in.

Deswin Currency hit the topscore of 36 off 51 balls with five fours and one six at No. 8, while all-rounder Nicholas Kirton made 28 off only 18 balls including three fours and one six at No. 4.

Corey Collymore, the former Barbados captain and West Indies swing bowler, grabbed five for 31 off 6.5 overs.

Kirk Brome took two for 13 off five overs and fellow medium-pacer Joel Michael Leacock, two for 14 off six overs.

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Lime defeated Lucky HorseShoe Welches by nine runs in Sunday’s rescheduled semi-finalat Blenheim A to earn the right to meet Melbourne A in the final of the Barbados Cricket League (BCL) Twenty20 competitionin early December.

The first semi-final was not completed due to bad light as both teams had ended their 20 oversin a tied position and the SuperOver tiebreaker could not be bowled. The BCL complaints committee made a determination that the match would be replayed.

Batting first, LIME scored113 for eight from their 20 overs and then restricted Welchesto 104 for seven.

Ron Bates and Dave Estwick opened for LIME and the dashing Bates took 16 runs from thesecond over of the innings andthe first bowled by Ryan Nurse, who ironically representsLIME in the Barbados Cricket Association’s competitions.

In attempting to repeat thefeat in the fourth over, he wasout hit wicket when he lost his balance and his bat struck the stumps as he tried to pull a slowerdelivery from Nurse.

Estwick was joined by Bryan Johnson and together they carried the score to 75 before Estwick wentfor 21. Johnson, who top-scored with 30, added a further 19 with Renaldo Hyland (11) as LIME continued to lose wickets steadily before the 20 overs expired. Captain Nurse led the Welches’ bowling with three for 30.

In reply, Welches’ openers Damian Hoyte and Shawn Smith started purposefully, posting 27 in three overs before Smith, who is the brother of West Indies batsman Dwayne Smith, fell for a-run-aball 16, well caught insidethe mid-wicket boundaryby Wesley Straker.

After his dismissal, a seriesof run-outs (four), coupled with some tight spin bowling by the LIME bowlers, pushed Welcheson the back foot.

Nurse made a breezy 19 off 11 deliveries but it was not enoughto save his side as both he and the experienced Owen Birch fell by the run-out route. Needing 14 off the last over, Welches surrendered the match as they could only muster five runs.

Summarised scores:

LIME: 113-8  in 20 overs (B. Johnson 30,D. Estwick 21, R. Bates 20, R. Hyland 11;R. Nurse 3-30, R. Cyrus 2- 13).Welches 104–7 in 20 overs (R. Nurse 19,D. Hoyte 17, S. Smith 16).Man-of-the-match: Dave Estwick.

Barbados Nation article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - The Barbados Franchise will be sending a 17-man squad to Port of Spain next week as a special precaution, with three cricketers who are training to make the team already showing symptoms associated with the mosquito-borne disease.

Barbados play arch-rivals Trinidad and Tobago in the first match of the recently launched WICB pro league at the Queen’s Park Oval, with the full team expected to be named on Monday.

Chairman of selectors Hendy Wallace informed the WEEKEND NATION yesterday that the franchise would not be taking any chances, and would be naming 17 players to make the trip, instead of the usual 13 that would travel for overseas matches.

Team affected

The WEEKEND NATION has also been reliably informed that chikungunya is already affecting the team, with trialists Kenroy Williams, Shamarh Brooks and Kyle Hope showing early signs of the disease which has proven problematic across the country in the past two months.

Barbados’ preparation for the inaugural professional league took another hit from the weather yesterday, when no play was possible on the third day of a practice match, after heavy overnight rain affected the run-ups and left puddles on the outfield at the Pine Basin.

Umpires Dalton Holder and Ryan Willoughby called off play just after the scheduled lunch break at 11:30 a.m.

The first practice match began after two and a half days due to a wet outfield at the Desmond Haynes Oval.

In this second practice match, Stoute’s XI batted first and amassed 355 all out with Shai Hope batting solidly to compile 122 with support coming from opener Rashidi Boucher who scored an even 50 and captain Kevin Stoute, 43.

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Twenty-eight centuries, 43 five-wicket hauls and six 'ten-fors' were recorded in the 2014 BCA Elite division Championship, which was comprehensively won by ICBL Empire in the 100th anniversary year of the Bank Hall club.

The number of centuries is 12 more than last year and 11 above the 2012 mark when a settled number of ten teams competed for the first time after the promotion and relegation system was introduced in 2009.

As far as five-wicket hauls were concerned, the number is one fewer than 2013 and 12 below the 2012 figure.

And the number of ten-wicket feats was the lowest in the past three seasons. There were seven in 2012 and nine in 2013.

Leading the list of century-makers were the Sagicor Life UWI pair of Kyle Corbin and Kavem Hodge with three each.

Corbin also amassed the most runs (752), while Hodge, a Dominican, scored 616 and was the third highest run-getter. Kyle Hope of ESA Field Pickwick made 656.

Jomel Warrican, the Empire left-arm spinner, boasted of the most five-fors (six) and also the most ten-fors (two) en route to being the highest wicket-taker as well (59). He was the only bowler with over 50 scalps.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Selah Primary have strolled into the Round of 16 in the 2014 Guardian Group/National Sports Council Herman Griffith Primary Schools Cricket Competition after making extremely short work of Zone A1 group-mates Gordon Greenidge Primary.

Playing yesterday at North Stars, Selah had the entire order back in the pavilion on 18. Javonte Payne-Clarke was a beast on the day and helped himself to five scalps for only ten runs. It also did not hurt that Tyrel Joseph took four of his own for eight runs. On the way to 19 for victory, Selah lost two wickets.

Charles F. Broome secure spot in next round

Coming up against St. Angela’s in a Zone B2 match at Blenheim, Charles F. Broome rolled into the Round of 16 with a seven-wicket win. St. Angela’s were in first and got up to 61 for six in 20 overs. Adam Mallalieu had an unbeaten 22 while Andrew Ballantyne followed up with ten. They had, however, to put up with Makhaya Moore who took two wickets for 20 runs. In the other innings, Nathan Walters (10), Nathan Collymore (17) and Renecco Smith (10) helped to bring Charles F. Broome to 62 for three in 16 overs.

St. Jude’s edge out Cuthbert Moore by 24 runs

Playing at Greens yesterday, St. Jude’s Primary were led to 76 all out in 18.3 overs by Tyrese Graham who finished with 12 in the innings. Cuthbert Moore fell short of the target as only J. Bailey, who had taken two wickets for 11 runs, made 20 and he was the only player to make double digits. Cuthbert Moore were cut down to 52 all out one ball short of their 25 overs. Bowling for St. Jude’s were Jelani Moseley (3-9), Damani Roach (3-8) and Darique Harris (2-4).

Selah drub St. Alban’s by nine

St. Alban’s stood very little of a chance when they took on Selah Primary at North Stars this past Friday. St. Alban’s were in first and could only muster 53 for nine as Javonte Payne-Clarke (2-12), Tyrel Joseph (3-15) and Renico Phillips (2-7) razed the batting order. Only Rojae Griffith (12) and Jabarri Cumberbatch (10) hit double-figures in the innings. In reply, only one wicket fell and Javon Gibbons, who had taken a wicket of his own, was good for an unbeaten 21 while Payne-Clarke hit 19 not out to bring up 56 for the nine-wicket win.

Rain interrupts People’s Cathedral

The People’s Cathedral Primary did not get to swing a single bat on Friday as their rescheduled game against Charles F. Broome was rained out. Charles F. were in to bat first and blasted 187 for five in 23 overs. Renecco Smith knocked up some magic with an unbeaten 38 to head things up while Nathan Collymore (27*) was with him at the crease when the innings ended. Nathan Walters (29), Jahdai Belle (27) and Caleb Massiah (26) all put in sizable contributions to take their team to the total despite having J. Johnson and K Trotman take two wickets each. Before People’s could make a reply, showers at Blenheim ended the game.
