Personal glory for three players, LIME looking limp in Elite division

$

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - There was personal glory for at least three players but LIME's likely demotion for the second time in four seasons took another telling squeeze on their own turf due to faulty covers on the opening day of the last series of the 2014 BCA Elite division championship.

Jamaican Jermaine Levy, a fast bowler playing in his first ever local top league competition, suddenly emerged from a barren season to grab a career-best eight for 20 off 9.1 overs for Sagicor Life UWI against Guardian General Barbados Youth who fell for the day's lowest total of 73 in 28.1 overs after they were sent in, and are now destined for an unprecedented seventh defeat since the ten-team Championship was rebranded Elite from the more than century-old Division 1 in 2012.

Levy, who celebrated his 21st birthday on September 30 and has played a solitary first-class match for Combined Campuses & Colleges against Trinidad & Tobago in Port-of-Spain this year, had taken only five wickets in seven innings prior to this series, officially the second, which was rescheduled from June 21, 28 & 29 because of a late decision to move the second Test between West Indies and New Zealand from Guyana to Kensington Oval.

This is Levy's sixth match and he was only brought on as the last of five bowlers.

Kavem Hodge, a 21-year-old Dominican, also with first-class experience, then hit an unbeaten 72 and joined the list of those proudly passing 500 runs for the season as UWI closed on 178 for six.

Hodge now has 549 runs as he seeks to join team-mate Kyle Corbin, the season's leading run-getter with 752, in hitting three centuries for the season.

The give-aways by Barbados Youth were further underlined by Corbin taking two for 30 as a medium-pacer in only the second time ever he has bowled in an innings in eight seasons at this level.

And left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, unquestionably the star bowler of this year's Championship, recorded his 200th wicket in 39 matches en route to his sixth 'five-for' of the season.

Warrican took five for 45 and pushed his tally for the season to 58 - still the only bowler with over 50 scalps - as new champions ICBL Empire hit back to reduce dethroned holders and pre-series second-placed CGI Maple to 139 for nine as rain allowed only 49 overs at Bank Hall.

LIME, one from the bottom in the Points table - Barbados Youth are exempt from demotion - were again victims of poor covers which resulted in seepage caused by rain at Wildey in their battle with CounterPoint Wanderers, who are also in the relegation zone.

Sent in, Wanderers reached 110 for five off 48.1 overs with play starting half-an-hour late and then being stopped at 4:17 p.m. because of rain, before officially being abandoned at 5:25 p.m.

At 3Ws Oval:

Playing his sixth match and bowling in his eighth innings, pacer Jermaine Levy suddenly looked like a star against arguably the worst ever Barbados Youth side since the introduction of promotion and demotion in 2009.

Levy had a mere five wickets with a haul of three for 28 in the second innings against Spartan at 3Ws Oval in Series 7 being his best figures prior to this series.

After losing the toss, Barbados Youth were bowled out for 73 in 28.1 overs with Levy grabbing eight for 20 off 9.1 overs.

Captain and all-rounder Nicholas Kirton, with the topscore of 33, and Shakeel Richards (12) were the only batsmen to reach double-figures. Six batsmen failed to score.

And to underline how everyone is taking advantage of poor Barbados Youth, specialist batsman Kyle Corbin, who boasts of the most runs for the season, picked up two for 30 in only the second time he has ever bowled in an innings at this level - the other occasion being against LIME at the same venue in Series 8.

UWI closed on 178 for six off 38 overs with Kavem Hodge unbeaten on 72, which has taken his aggregate for the season to 549.

At Bank Hall:

Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican snatched his sixth five-wicket haul of the season as Empire hit back in the post-tea session during which they took six wickets cheaply to restrict Maple to 139 for nine off 49 overs at stumps.

After being sent in, Maple went to tea on 90 for three off 29.2 overs with captain and opener Renaldo Parris unbeaten on 42.

But shortly after the interval, Warrican, who had Jed Yearwood leg before wicket for six to claim his 200th scalp in what turned out to be the last ball before the break, also had Renaldo Parris leg before wicket for 43, which came in 113 minutes off exactly 100 balls.

Renaldo Parris and the unrelated Shane Parris (34) had put on 63 in 22.2 overs for the first wicket before Shane Parris was caught by wicket-keeper Andre Roach off off-spinner Roston Chase as he moved to within 13 runs of 500 for the season during which he has hit two centuries.

Effectively, the collapse resulted in seven wickets tumbling for 47 runs in 17.5 overs.

Apart from Warrican, who has five for 45 off 15 overs, pacer Justin Greaves took two for 15 off four overs and Chase, two for 31 off 12 overs.

At Wildey:

It was another frustrating day for LIME, who must win this match while limiting Wanderers to as few points as possible in what is arguably a battle of teams fighting to avoid relegation.

With rock-bottom Barbados Youth exempt from demotion, LIME went into the match in second last position in the points table on 54 points with Wanderers joint on 63 points with St. Catherine, followed by BDFSP on 61.

Following a late start by half-an-hour because of seepage at the southern end, LIME still managed to bowl as many as 33 overs by tea with Wanderers on 83 for four after they were sent in.

But rain stopped play 67 minutes after the interval and not another ball was bowled for the day due to damp spots on the pitch, as Wanderers reached 110 for five off 48.1 overs.

Renaldo Arthur is not out on 30, which has stretched for an-hour-and-a-half during which he faced 94 balls and hit two boundaries.

Off-spinner Ashley Nurse, who was picked in the West Indies Test squad for the first time for the now abandoned three-Test series in India, and was due to leave the island today (Saturday), picked up two for 40 off 15 overs.

LIME were demoted at the end of the 2011 season before returning to the top flight in 2013.

At Paragon:

Shai Hope struck an unbeaten 74 as Pickwick reached 230 for seven off 74 overs after they lost the toss against BDFSP.

Hope's half-century came in 166 minutes off 131 balls with two fours and one six.

He and fast bowling all-rounder Jade Padmore, in his first match of the season following a pro contract in the Toronto League in Canada, have featured in an unfinished stand of 88 with Padmore on 35.

There were two wickets each for medium-pacer Marlon Welcome Goodman, off-spinner Renaldo Brathwaite and pacer Ackeem Clinkett for 31, 40 and 40 runs.

At Bayfield:

Skipper and off-spinner Shamar Cooke triggered a sensational collapse and along with experienced left-arm spinner Derick Bishop sent Spartan tumbling to 106 all out in 39 overs.

Then former West Indies opener Omar Phillips hit his first-half century of the season as the St. Catherine responded with 126 for two off 37 overs at the close.

Cooke had his opposite number Akeem Springer caught and bowled for the topscore of 58 - his only half-century of the season - as Spartan, who won the toss, lost their last seven wickets for seven runs in 5.5 overs.

Springer batted for a shade over two overs, faced 117 balls and struck three fours and two sixes.

Six batsmen failed to score.

Bishop took five for 35 off 18 overs, pushing his tally of wickets for the season to 45 - the second most - while Cooke, who introduced himself as the last of five bowlers, had the flattering figures of four for two off three overs.

Left-hander Phillips has so far occupied the crease for 143 minutes, having faced 133 balls with ten fours in an unbeaten 80.

Education ‘the best training ground’

$

Barbados Nation article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - “Education is the key to success in the world.”

This may seem a strange mantra for a professional sportsman whose life revolves around cricket but former Combermerian Jomel Warrican understands the need for total personal development as he walks life’s journey.

He expressed this view as he spoke to MIDWEEK SPORT following ICBL Empire’s recent impressive capture of the 2014 Elite Division cricket championship.

Warrican played a key role in the success of Empire and is the leading wicket taker so far this season, claiming some 58 scalps, the most by any bowler since the rebranding of the top domestic division to ‘Elite’.

“As Nelson Mandela said, the greatest weapon is education,” Warrican said as he explained the influence of cricket teacher and former Barbados fast bowler Roddy Estwick on his life.

“He (coach Estwick) always preached the importance of education while I was going to school because if you wanted to continue playing for Combermere you had to do well at school. He would talk to you about cricket, ask you questions about cricket, explain cricket. We lived and breathed cricket at Combermere. At the same time he was preaching the importance of education as well,” said Warrican.

The 22-year-old left arm orthodox spinner and capable lower order batsman still seeks out the advice of his former teacher and is a frequent visitor to the school and/or to Estwick’s home where cricket talk takes centre stage.

“Mr Estwick and my father (Joel Warrican) have impacted heavily on my life,” Warrican said.

Ironically Warrican’s professional cricket contract and his own training schedule have combined to influence him to take a break from his studies at Cave Hill next semester, but he insists this is only temporary.

JOMEL WARRICAN: “Captain Jamal Smith told me and boasted to others that if I played a full season Empire would win the cup.” (Picture by Kenmore Bynoe.)

Inspired by the confidence placed in him by his captain Jamal Smith, Warrican set out to be the leading wicket taker this season, well aware that his full participation would serve Empire’s cause in aiming for championship success in the centenary year.

“Smith told me and boasted to others that if I played a full season Empire would win the cup. I believed if he had that confidence in me I should give it a try and I decided to stay home and put everything into the season,” Warrican explained.

The affable cricketer spoke highly of the environment around the club that has paved the way for the excellent performance of the team as well as the contribution of coach Sherlon Greaves to his development.

“We have discussed things like the areas to bowl, when to fight the ball and assessing the pitch. He gives me a lot of confidence to come out and do well,” said Warrican.

“Every single member of Empire has contributed. The fans, spectators, barman, everyone deserves a round of applause for supporting not just me but the entire team,” said Warrican, who was born in St Vincent and came here at the age of 12.

With 14 first-class wickets already under his belt in five outings at the highest level of regional cricket, Warrican is a firm believer in the importance of mental preparation.

He is constantly seeking new information on maximising this aspect of his cricketing life while at the same time maintaining a rigorous training programme.

Setting realistic goals and high standards for performance are some of the tenets of his programme. Warrican also underlined the importance of acquiring information relevant to his development.

“I go online and read about psychology, understanding yourself and watching why great players and great people in general do well,” noted Warrican whose days are divided between classes at Cave Hill, studying at home and cricket training.

Boucher, Brathwaite lead record-equalling 13 centuries so far in Sagicor General Super Cup

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - A record-equalling 13 centuries have now been scored in the 2014 BCA Sagicor General Super Cup Championship following three in Series 8 on Sunday.

The record was first set in 2009.

And with one round remaining in the preliminaries before the 18-team tournament goes into the knockout stage, a new record could be established in the 40-year history of the island's top one-day competition.

Slamming hundreds in Series 8 were Kavem Hodge of Sagicor Life UWI, ICBL Empire's Roston Chase and Kemal Smith of YMPC.

Hodge's was the most blistering. The Dominican all-rounder hit 114 off only 80 balls with ten fours and two sixes in a total of 270 for eight off 50 overs against record eight-time champions Massy Stores Spartan, who were humiliated by 152 runs at Queen's Park and took their exit from Zone 'A'.

Chase also made 114, off 131 balls with 18 threes and three fours as Empire scored 243 for eight in 50 overs against school team Caribbean Alliance/Akobah Gardens Foundation, who were crushed by 163 runs at Bank Hall in Zone 'B'.

In the same Zone, Smith scored 113 off 121 balls including 11 threes and six fours in a total of 281 for five off 50 overs against ESA Field Pickwick at Beckles Road.

But his effort was in vain as Pickwick, spurred by a brilliant, unbeaten 96 off 100 balls from Shai Hope, triumphed by four wickets with two balls to spare. Hope struck seven threes and five fours.

Barbados player Hope now has 331 runs at an amazing average of 165.50, having been dismissed only twice in seven knocks.

It has been a wonderful season with the bat for the 20-year-old Hope in the three major local domestic competitions.

He amassed the most runs (346; ave: 69.20) in the Sagicor General Twenty20 Championship, currently has 415 runs (ave: 46.11) in the Elite division, which ends this weekend, and is only one run behind the batsman with the most runs in the Super Cup - Rashidi Boucher, the Spartan opener, whose season ended in an anti-climax, as he was sidelined by illness for the match against UWI.

Boucher finished with 332 runs (ave: 55.33) and along with Kraigg Brathwaite, the CounterPoint Wanderers, Barbados and West Indies Test opener, who is now touring Sri Lanka with the West Indies 'A' team, are the only batsmen to score two centuries in the Super Cup this season.

Brathwaite, who boasts of the most centuries all told (six) in the Super Cup and veteran Maple player Pedro Agard are the only batsmen in the current list who were among the 13 century-makers in 2009.

Apart from Boucher and Hope, two other batsmen have reached 300 runs in the 2014 Super Cup - BDFSP left-hander Antonio Greenidge (302) and Kyle Corbin of UWI (300).

Following is the record-equalling list of century-makers for the 2014 Sagicor General Super Cup Championship:

LIME second team to be demoted twice from top BCA Championship on rain-drenched last day

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - LIME are the second team to be demoted twice from the top BCA three-day Championship in six seasons of promotion and relegation.

Their extremely remote chances of beating fellow pre-series relegation worried side CounterPoint Wanderers and remaining connected to the ten-ten competition were washed away on home turf at Wildey in a very wet climax to the 2014 Elite division season.

Torrential rain which swept across the island from early morning was so severe that there was only play at the well-appointed 3Ws Oval - and in the post-tea session - as Sagicor Life UWI wasted little time in crushing terminal bottom-placed Guardian General Barbados Youth who are exempt from demotion, by an innings and 59 runs, to finish runners-up to new runaway champions ICBL Empire whose success came in the centenary year of the great Bank Hall club.

LIME have now joined Police in being jolted from the major competition (rebranded Elite in 2012 from the more than century-old Division 1) for a second time since promotion/relegation started in 2009.

Police were demoted at the end of the 2010 and 2012 seasons and are yet to return to the top flight, while LIME were relegated after the 2011 season and returned in 2013.

It was also the last time that LIME (formerly known as Cable & Wireless, Barbados External Telecommunications and Cable & Wireless BET) were expected to play at Wildey after more than four decades, as the ground is up for sale. Informed sources say they are likely to return to their old venue at Boarded Hall.

For six straight rounds, LIME languished one from the bottom of the Points table, including the last five alone.

Plenty fibre and luck would have been needed for LIME to remain in the Elite division but the signals were dark from day break on the last day of the season with ugly clouds building in the southeast.

Officially, play was called off at Wildey at the scheduled 11:30 a.m. start to confirm a no-decision in a match which was blighted by rain from the very first day.

Responding to a first innings total of 152 for eight declared of 70.3 overs, LIME limped to 78 for seven off 23 overs at stumps on Day 2.

LIME ended the season on 58 points and joined Barbados Youth, who finished on 23 points and suffered seven defeats including four in succession by an innings, as the only teams without a victory.

Randy Thomas' team went into the last series on 54 points with three other teams mathematically also on the demotion radar - Brathwaite Construction/Republic Bank St. Catherine and Wanderers on 63 each and BFDSP on 61.

But prior to the last day of the season, St. Catherine had secured ten points against Massy Stores Spartan at Bayfield to clear themselves of relegation, and BDFSP were on course for a draw with ESA Field Pickwick at Paragon.

The bottom line was that LIME needed to win to avoid demotion but that is now history.

Wildey, formerly known as Banks and Banks Wildey, will return to the major division in 2015 for the first time since 2011 after capturing the First division Championship on Saturday.

There were a couple more personal achievements in the last series, which was the rescheduled Series 2.

Kavem Hodge, a 21-year-old Dominican in his second Elite division season, emulated his UWI team-mate Kyle Corbin in recording the most centuries (three) for 2014.

Starting the second day on 72 with UWI on 178 for six replying to a paltry first innings of 73, Hodge made 122 in 310 all out off 59.1 overs.

He reached his century in 144 minutes off 117 balls with 12 fours and all told struck 14 fours and one six in his 138-ball innings.

Jamaican Akeem Dewar, better known for his leg-spin bowling, lashed 90 not out off 95 balls with eight fours and four sixes - his first ever half-century - in his fourth consecutive season at the top level of local domestic competition.

Hodge and Dewar added 126 for the seventh wicket.

Barbados Youth, as had become the custom in the last three rounds, showed an improvement in their second innings and had closed on 155 for six before falling for 178 in 63.2 overs.

Renaldo Brathwaite of BDFSP missed out on a second century of the season and a career fourth by just one run, but he at least had the satisfaction of joining the 500-run club in a total of 177 for five responding to 250 all out.

Brathwaite's 99 carried his aggregate to 576.

At 3Ws Oval:

It took UWI just 10.2 overs in 33 minutes to complete their third win after play started at 3:15 p.m.

Dewar picked up two of the wickets to end with four for 39 off 19 overs in what was a generally disappointing season when compared with his returns of the previous two years.

Another leg-spinner Keron Cottoy, took three for 45 off 14.2 overs including the scalp of Javed Leacock, who added only one to his overnight score of 25.

Captain Zachary McCaskie topscored with 56 off 81 balls with six fours and one six. It was his only half-century of the season.

At Wildey:

Frustration is part and parcel of LIME when it comes to the drainage at their home ground. It was no different on the first two days and rain eventually had the final say.

On the second day, while the sun was out in all of its glory and the other teams were in the middle, LIME and Wanderers had to wait until 1:45 p.m. for a start of play.

Resuming on 110 for five off 48.1 overs, Wanderers scored 152 for eight off 70.3 overs to deny LIME hopes of the full four bowling points.

Renaldo Arthur, who started the day on 30 after going to the crease at No. 5, topscored with 47. He batted for 147 minutes, faced 137 balls and struck two boundaries before he was seventh out, bowled by pacer Javon Searles.

Arthur and captain Diego Stuart, who made 18 from his overweek ten, added 44 in 79 minutes off 24.5 overs for the sixth wicket. It was the best stand of the innings and clearly frustrated LIME.

Searles took three for 21 off 13.3 overs and off-spinner Ashley Nurse picked up three for 62 off 26 overs.

LIME were kept in check by new ball bowlers, leg-spinner Nikolai Charles and left-arm medium-pacer Raymon Reifer, who bowled 22 of the 23 overs in a close of play 78 for seven.

Captain Randy Thomas was unbeaten on 25 in 47 minutes off 43 balls, hitting two fours and one six. Opener Justin Brathwaite made 22.

Charles took four for 48 off 12 overs and Reifer, three for 28 off ten overs.

At Bank Hall:

Empire showed what true champions are made of by pulling themselves around from potentially being led on first innings for the only time this season.

After swiftly wrapping up the Maple first innings at 142 in 51.3 overs from an overweek 139 for nine - left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican took the last wicket to end with six for 45 off 16.3 overs as he moved to a season high tally to 59 - Empire went to tea in some bother on 72 for six off 36 overs.

But Warrican joined fast bowling all-rounder Justin Greaves in a seventh wicket partnership of 78, which helped in lifting the home side to 170 all out off 69.3 overs.

Greaves topscored with 56 not out in only his second innings of the season following an even, unbeaten century off Barbados Youth at the same venue in the previous series. He batted for 170 minutes, received 139 balls and hit six threes and two fours.

Warrican made 34 before becoming one of five wickets for off-spinner Ramon Greaves, who conceded 51 runs off 23.3 overs.

Former Barbados captain and West Indies seamer Corey Collymore, in his only match of the season, took two for 36 off 14 overs including the scalp of another former national captain and West Indies player, Ryan Hinds, who was bowled for seven.

It was only the second time Hinds had been dismissed in seven innings this season, which brought him 284 runs.

Maple had not scored after two overs in their second innings.

At Paragon:

There were mixed feelings and fortunes for Renaldo Brathwaite as the match ended on a no-decision.

On the second day, the diminutive BDFSP batsman joined two of his team-matches - captain Antonio Greenidge and Marlon Welcome-Goodman - in amassing 500 runs for the season but he was dismissed one run short of a second century.

Brathwaite was bowled by a quicker ball from Kyle Hope, the Pickwick captain who was trundling off-breaks in what turned out to be the day's last over.

It was Hope's only wicket of the season in what was the sixth innings he had bowled and the first since Series 5 against UWI when he sent down 11 overs at the 3Ws Oval.

Brathwaite occupied the crease for roughly four hours, faced 182 balls and hit four boundaries and three sixes.

With Dario Boyce (36), Brathwaite put on 74 for the second wicket, and 60 for the fifth wicket with left-hander Welcome-Goodman, who was unbeaten on 25.

Off-spinner Shane Jones took three for 57 off 24 consecutive overs.

Earlier, Pickwick, resuming on 230 for seven off 74 overs with Shai Hope on 74, were bowled out for 250 in 82.1 overs.

Hope was last out for 87, his highest score in four half-centuries for the season. All told, he batted for 315 minutes, faced 194 balls and counted four boundaries and one six.

Jade Padmore, who resumed on 35, made 38 in a stand of 94 with Shai Hope.

Right-arm medium-pacer Welcome-Goodman was the leading wicket-taker with three for 43 off 19 overs.

At Bayfield:

Spartan openers Akeem Springer and Reydon Toppin led a spirited fightback after St. Catherine gained a commanding first innings lead of 200.

The pair added 109 off 30 overs without being parted at stumps with Toppin on 55 and captain Springer 52.

It was Toppin's third fifty of the season and the only the second for Springer following his first innings 58.

From an overweek 126 for two, St. Catherine suffered an early setback when opener Omar Phillips was caught and bowled by off-spinner Jameel Stuart for 82 after resuming on 80.

But half-centuries from Neil Browne and wicket-keeper Tevyn Walcott helped them to 306 for eight declared in 81 overs.

Browne made 56 in two hours off 77 balls with two fours and one six, while Walcott was unbeaten on 55, which came in 110 minutes off 89 balls with two fours and two sixes.

Leg-spinner Aamir Thomas took three for 77 off 17 overs.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Mohammed Mohamad in Association with the Hamilton Lashley Human Development Foundation launched the Twenty/20 Goodwill Tape-ball Cricket Match, which is scheduled to be played at Passage Road Grounds, St. Michael, at 6:00pm on Friday, 31 October.

At a press conference held at the conference room of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and Innovation last Saturday, 25 October. Mr. Lashley said it was Mr. Mohommed Mohamad who came to him with the idea of holding this match. He said that he was very pleased to be associated with the event, while at the same time aiding and supporting an outstanding origination such as the Barbados Cancer Society.

Mr. Mohamad, who himself is a Muslim, and is the Horseman’s Liaison/Racing Division Officer of the Barbados Turf Club (BTC), said that he came up with the idea due to the BTC having a little team that has been playing tape ball cricket for many years, and he felt it would be good to have a little comrade with other teams, and at the same time raise funds for the Barbados Cancer Society. He said that since he is associated with the BTC and being a Muslin, he thought it would be good to have a BTC team oppose a Muslin Team, and hence the match on Friday.

Mohammed said that he was very pleased to have the Barbados Cancer Society on board, as he and all of us know that cancer can affect anyone or your family or friends.

He said that it was back in September when he approached the BTC CEO/Secretary Mrs. Rosette Peirce and she immediately gave it the okay, and from there he approached Mr. Lashley, and again he was all for it. Next he approached Dr. Cooke-Johnson OBE JP, and she gave it her full support.

Mr. Mohommed said that he was also very grateful to Mr. Jerry Blenman, Director of the National Sports Council for his assistance in making this event possible.

Dr. Cooke-Johnson said she was pleased to be able to be at the press conference, and it was a first for her of such an original fund raiser.

She said the match will show the community how great it is for all sectors of our society to come together as one and do work that is of benefit. She said that charity and altruism are great examples for our youth.

Mrs. Cooke-Johnson said they are raising funds for the Barbados Cancer Society, particularly its Men’s Program, and Men against cancer, which is often overlooked.

She said it was the genius of Mr. Mohammed that brought them there, along with the BTC, Mr. Lashley and the Muslin Community and the Barbados Cancer Society. She looks forward to well patronized match, full of good spirit and show off of talent.

Mrs. Cooke-Johnson had high praise for Mr. Mohammed Mohamad who she says has held two race days with funds for the Society, he makes a regular Independence donation to the Society, and is now bringing this original and interesting cricket match, of which the funds will go towards the Early Detection Clinics, so that the early detection of men’s cancers can be expanded.

The Barbados Cancer Societies President, went on to say, advertising and awareness can be increased, as we have to reduce the number of late diagnoses, and the high mortality of prostrate cancer, which is double any other type of cancer.

Mr. Mohmad Pandor, thanked all those who have come on board with Mohommed Mohamad and the Hamilton Lashley Foundation, and looks forward to a big crowd to witness what looks to be a very competitive match.

Big wins for Wesley Hall, St. Giles in cricket tourney

Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Wesley Hall and St. Giles looked in form on Wednesday as the 2014 Guardian Group/National Sports Council Herman Griffith Primary Schools’ Cricket Competition continued this week.

With both teams advancing up the table in Zone D1, they won handsomely against their latest opponents.

At Passage Road, Wesley Hall had the pleasure of destroying Grazettes Primary, who put up very little of a fight in their Round 5 game.

Wesley Hall were in at the crease first and blasted 131 for the loss of two in their 25 overs. An unbeaten 61 from Edwin Burnett put Wesley Hall in a position of authority while Jahin Waithe added 14* as well.

In the other innings, Grazettes failed to shine and the entire order was back in the pavilion after only 19 runs were made.

J. Jumai (3-4), T. Morris (2-2) and J. Crookendale razed the Grazettes batsmen to secure a 112-run win for Wesley Hall.

Playing at Blenheim, St. Giles easily knocked off 42 runs to take an eight-wicket win over Lawrence T. Gay. The Spooner’s Hill side managed the total for the loss of seven wickets but suffered at the hands of the likes of Trevon Mayers (2-3), Savigo Blenman (2-4) and Dean Greaves (2-11) who all bowled well.

Going in to bat with only 43 needed for victory, Romario Roach (15*) and Jamario St. Hill (10*) brought home the target with two wickets falling before they came in. To their credit, Lawrence T. Gay had a good performance from Tyrese Connell with the ball as he took two wickets for 10 runs.

In Zone A1, All Saints made short work of Boscobelle Primary at home.

Batting first, the hosts made 91 in 25 overs thanks to relatively easy bowling. Sherwayne Burke held on to his wicket as he brought home 17 while the top score came off the bat of Tariq O’Neale (20). Sahayden Boyce also threw 14 into the hat to help the total.

Although it took 11.1 overs, All Saints were able to dismiss the entire Boscobelle order for a paltry 19 runs. None of the batsmen reached double-figures and that was due largely to the bowling of Burke (3-3), O’Neale (3-1) and Michael Walkes (3-15) who secured the 72-run win in the St. Peter derby.

Vauxhall and People’s Cathedral clashed at Briar Hall and the former came out on the favourable end of the exchange. Ending with a 58-run win, Vauxhall went in first and put up 131 for six wickets in their 25. Despite sound bowling from K. Trotman, who had two for 14 runs, Shaquan Butcher blasted 54 while Damian Bourne seconded him with 24.

During the reply, Trotman tried to carry the weight of his team on his shoulders but he could only muster 39 as they were skittered out for 69. Anthony Hamilton had a good day with the ball and he took three for 23 while Bourne came back with the cork to snag two for eight.

Bayville was the scene of another derby as St. Cyprian’s and St. Paul’s met up in a Zone C2 fixture. St. Paul’s were in the field first and Dario Grandison did his best to keep the runs down but despite taking three for 14, St. Cyprian’s worked their way up to 121/6. Darian Benn beat the ball all around the ground to bring home 49 runs for his team while Makaiah Bartlett (13) and Marcus Whittington (12) made contributions as well.

St. Paul’s faced some stiff resistance as they laboured to 34 all out. Zane Corbin proved extremely dangerous as he bowled five scalps for five runs. Jordan Reifer had two for six while Fonzlo Brewster rounded out the top performers in the 87-run win with two wickets for eight runs.
