Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - There is every reason for ICBL Empire to keep boasting and celebrating their fitting, comprehensive capture of the 2014 BCA Elite division Championship in the 100th year of the club.

Veteran all-rounder Ryan Hinds topped the overall batting averages while left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican was the undisputed bowling star in helping to spur the Bank Hall team to one of the most memorable feats in the last three-and-a-half decades.

En route to their 21st top league three-day title (rebranded Elite from Division 1 in 2012) and their first since 2004, Empire established a modern era record of six straight wins - all remarkably coming in the first six rounds.

All told, they had seven victories and finished on 145 points - 46 more than second-placed Sagicor Life UWI.

Left-hander Hinds, 33, who played in only the last five rounds of the season because of professional duties, scored 284 runs from seven innings including four not outs, for an average of 94.66.

He hit one century - 122 against Guardian General Barbados Youth at Bank Hall in Series 9.

The 22-year-old Warrican not only took the most wickets (59) but also had the best average of 10.54, along with the most five-fors (six) and ten-wicket hauls (two) from 237.3 overs including 57 maidens. His best figures were seven for 62 in the second innings against BDFSP at Paragon in Series 8. In addition, he was the only bowler with over 50 wickets.

Kyle Corbin of UWI amassed the most runs (752) including three centuries and two fifties, at an average of 53.71.

Corbin, 24, was the only batsman with over 700 runs and along with team-mate Kaven Hodge, recorded the most centuries.

Hodge, a 21-year-old Dominican, finished with the third highest aggregate of 616 (ave: 56.00).

Kyle Hope, the ESA Field Pickwick captain, made 656 (ave: 72.88).

Kraigg Brathwaite, the Barbados first-class captain, who plays for CounterPoint Wanderers, was second in the batting averages with 92.33, having scored 277 runs in three innings.

Apart from Corbin, Hope and Hodge, five other batsman including three from BDFSP scored over 500 runs. They were: Renaldo Brathwaite (BDFSP, 576), Marlon Welcome-Goodman (BDFSP, 570), Roston Chase (Empire, 546), Kenroy Williams (Brathwaite Construction/Republic Bank St. Catherine, 546) and Antonio Greenidge (BDFSP, 541).

Experienced St. Catherine left-arm spinner Derick Bishop ended with the second most wickets (45).

The fielding honours were very competitive. Collis Worrell of CGI Maple and St. Catherine's Tevyn Walcott were the joint top wicket-keepers with 17 victims, while Roston Chase and the UWI pair of Floyd Reifer and Dwayne Sealy all led the way among the fielders with 11 catches each.

Empire have now won the title eight times in the last 26 seasons including seven between 1989 and 2004.

 Their first ever title was in 1932-33, and apart from 2014, they were also winners in 1934-35, 1935-36, 1939-40, 1941-42, 1946, 1951 (shared with Carlton), 1956-57, 1962, 1963 (shared with Spartan), 1965, 1970, 1971, 1989, 1991 (shared with YMPC), 1993, 1995, 1996, 2000 and 2004.

Barbados Pride leave for T&T clash

Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - The name of the Barbados franchise team has finally been announced.

The team which was slated to leave yesterday will be known as the Barbados Pride.

According to Conde Riley chairman of the franchise board, the name of the team was decided after consultation with the players.

Barbados has won about half of the tournaments and the players according to Riley said that they are the lions of the tournament. “What do you call lions when they go hunting as a team... a pride,” it was explained.

This is how the name was derived and the logo will be the Barbados Pride flower.

Barbados Pride was faced with some challenges in selection according to Chairman of selectors Hendy Wallace, with the sudden return of the players who were on the West Indies team, their pool went from 15 to 20. As a result, some players had to be left off the final squad.

However three players on the core of the team are ill and three are injured which helped in simplifying the selection process.

Wallace also explained that initially former captain Ryan Hinds was included for his experience with the assumption that the players on the West Indies team would not be available for most if not all the tournament.

He is still in the team as he has shown improvement in fitness and performance.

Unlike previous tournaments, the franchise format gives the players a security of being able to make a yearly income and not play cricket for three months and them have to go and look for a job.

In a wide ranging media conference yesterday at Kensington Oval, Riley said that players had contracts in three categories and even those not on contract were still eligible for play under the “play for pay” scheme.

Barbados Pride will be led by Kraigg Brathwaite in the four-day tournament and Kevin Stoute in the 50 covers.

Springer keen on player improvement

Trinidad Express article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - While Barbados coach Hendy Springer is focused on retaining their four-day crown, he also wants to see improvement from his players.

Barbados won the regional four-day last year by just one point with Trinidad and Tobago having to settle for second place.

The two sides meet in the first round of the revamped West Indies Cricket Board Professional Cricket League (PCL) at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain starting on Friday.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Springer said: “We do not only want to remain on top, but we also want to see these young men improve.

“It’s all fine and dandy to win trophies, but I think the real achievement will be to continue winning trophies while seeing improvement in the players,” he added.

The Bajan coach especially wants to see the team’s youngsters shine and become leaders within the team.

“I want to see Shai Hope, Shane Dowrich and Miguel Cummins become more consistent performers for us,” said Springer.

Dorwrich along with West Indies players, batsman Kirk Edwards and left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn will sit out the first match with a minor injuries.

For the more seasoned players, the coach wants them to continuing pushing their limits in search of the West Indies senior tam call-up.

“Others like Kraigg Brathwaite, Kirk Edwards, Carlos Brathwaite, Ashley Nurse and Jonathan Carter have been part of either the West Indies senior or A-Team squads, so we want to see them continue pushing their claims.

“This is a stepping-stone to international cricket and I am hoping that some of the players in the team play well enough to be considered for honours above this level.

“We have a few of our senior players available and so this will also help us in our first few matches,” Springer added.

He is also in favour of the new home and away format which will give players more opportunities to show their worth.

“The length of the season and the breaks in between will be a test for the players to see if they can maintain focus and momentum...but I like this format. If you aspire to play at the highest level, five or six matches a season is inadequate to prepare you,” the coach added.

Barbados Squad: Kraigg Brathwaite (captain), Carlos Brathwaite, Jonathan Carter, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Ryan Hinds, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Ashley Nurse, Omar Phillips, Kemar Roach, Dwayne Smith, Jomel Warrican.

Trinidad & Tobago Newsday article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - National captain Rayad Emrit believes that the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force are prepared for their match against defending champs Barbados Pride in the first round of the WICB Professional Cricket League (PCL) which bowls off tomorrow at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port-of-Spain.

The team was involved in a training session yesterday at the Oval nets for about one hour before they carried out some fielding practice.

Speaking with Emrit after the practice session at the Oval, he expressed confidence in his team believing that they would be ready for the challenges ahead.

“We have been preparing for a long while now, but the weather hasn’t been too kind to us throughout the preparations, but we are making the best out of it,” he said.

He went on to say that this is the best team assembled at this time and is happy with how they are going.

“I am happy with the guys, and the form that they have shown, and young (Yannic) Cariah coming into the team...He has been scoring a lot of runs in the trials and in the preparations,” he continued.

“It’s going to be a different wicket at the Oval so we are trying to get as much preparation done before the game starts on Friday. I think if all goes well and everyone is fit we would have a full strength team.”

Meanwhile, captain of Barbados Pride, Kraigg Brathwaite, said there is no pressure as defending champions going into the match on Friday and they are going to play with a winning attitude.

“No pressure, but it’s not going to be an easy task. We are going to go out there, work hard (and) keep the winning spirit going,” he declared.

“I know it’s not going to be easy, I’ve played them before and I know they are a good team at home and we have to come out and work hard, bat well and bowl well,” he pointed out.

The opening batsman said the team is ready and he is looking to go out and score as much runs as possible and lead the team to the best of his ability.

Rivalries mark start of new PCL season

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – A new season ushering in a new era of franchise play opens on Friday, when the newly-constituted WICB Professional Cricket League Regional 4-Day Tournament begins.

The PCL R4Day will feature 10 rounds of matches – an increase of three matches from the previous seven seasons – between franchises drawn from the six territorial boards of the WICB.

Teams representing the Barbados Pride, Guyana Jaguars, Trinidad & Tobago Red Force and Windward Islands Volcanoes, as well as yet to be christened franchises from Jamaica and Leeward Islands will embark upon a gruelling, four-month schedule to be crowned the new regional champions and claim the Headley/Weekes Trophy, which has been restored as the symbol of supremacy.

“The beginning of a new season is always an incredibly exciting time, even more so with the move to professional cricket and our first tournament of the year, the PCL R4Day,” said WICB Director of Cricket Richard Pybus.

“It is being held over two rounds, 10 matches-a-side, with the specific goal of giving the teams and players the opportunity to produce consistently over the duration of the competition.”

Pybus added: “It will allow the players to showcase their skills and for Clive Lloyd’s selection panel to really see, who are the better performers in the region.

“We ultimately want as many players as possible fighting for the 11 starting spots in the West Indies Test team and I believe this is the starting point for that. Best wishes to all the teams, management and match officials for a great season ahead.”

There is something extra-special about each match in the first round.

The Red Force host reigning double-crown regional champions Bajan Pride in one of the oldest rivalries in Caribbean sports at Queen’s Park Oval in the T&T capital of Port of Spain.

Jamaica Franchise face Windward Islands Volcanoes at Sabina Park in the Jamaica capital of Kingston in a repeat of last season’s Final Challenge and what could easily be one of the most competitive affairs of the round, judging on the results from earlier this year.

And Guyana Jaguars meet Leeward Islands Franchise at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence, just outside the Guyana capital of Georgetown, in a battle that could give a boost of confidence to last season’s two bottom-placed teams.

Pride and Red Force were truly last season’s top two sides – the Barbadians lifted the NAGICO Super50 title and followed up with the Regional 4-Day crown, while T&T finished in the runners-up spot in both competitions.

Recent history is on the side of the Pride. They have won the last five matches on the trot between the two sides including contests at the same venue two years ago and last year.

“I can see our side doing quite well this season,” said Pride captain and West Indies opener Kraigg Brathwaite. “We have a strong team, especially for this first match against the Red Force, and it is just about the ‘fellas’ going out there and working hard and gelling together as a team.

“With the 10 matches, this season will be interesting. Around the World, this is the way it is done and it will be very helpful and allow us to play more matches and give us more opportunity to improve.”

Red Force captain Rayad Emrit said beating the Pride in the first round would be a good way to start the new season.

“We came second to them in this competition earlier this year by two points, so I think the combination of players that we should be able to put on the park should give us a good chance of beating them and going on to capture the title next March,” said the wiry all-rounder.

“We are starting the season on home soil and Barbados are one of our toughest opponents every season. Hopefully, we can get things right this time and build the momentum for the rest of the season.”

The Windwards claimed only their fourth victory on Jamaican soil, when they thumped their hosts by three wickets earlier this year at Sabina Park, but the Jamaicans gained a measure of revenge, when they topped the Volcanoes in the drawn Final Challenge in St. Lucia to claim the Headley/Weekes Trophy.

Long-standing Jamaica Franchise captain Tamar Lambert said last season was disappointing for his side following six years of unprecedented success and they will be looking to recapture the Trophy as overall champions when the season concludes next March.

“We started last season well, but we fell off in the middle part, so we are looking forward to this new competition beginning on Friday to put things right,” he said.

“The lengthy season will be a challenge, but we have been asking for more matches and we are looking to make a good start to the season this weekend against the Windwards.”

He added: “I think the team that is strong physically throughout the season will endure the course and will be the new champions at the end of the season.

“We have been putting in some hard work during our preparations, so hopefully it can all show and come together on the field.”

Volcanoes captain Liam Sebastien said he wants to see his side play fearlessly and continue to trend upwards, as they have been able to throw overboard the Cinderella tag that they wore for a long time in the regional game as a number of players – including himself – have established themselves and brought more consistency to their play.

“This is a new season and a new format, and the Jamaicans will not come out there and lie down because we beat them last season,” he said. “We have to try and come good from ball one and try our best and fight for the Windward Islands Voclanoes to start this new season on a bright note.

“Our chances this season are as good as any other, but it’s a long, demanding season and we have not played 10 matches in a season for a long time, so we have to start off well and if we play the way we have been played in recent season, we have a good chance.

He said: “We will have to try and maximise our home matches and try to accumulate as many points as possible when we are on the road. It won’t be difficult to motivate our players because we play for the team, we play for each other and there is always good camaraderie.

“I think playing for the Windwards is a motivation in itself because we have come a long way over the years and to see where we have reached now should be enough motivation to force the guys to play at their best, so we can’t relax now.”

Leewards Franchise and the Jaguars were once powerhouses in the regional game, but they have not had consistent success in recent years and occupied the last two places respectively in the table last season.

Jaguars captain Leon Johnson, the West Indies left-handed batsman, said his side was blessed to play their first four matches at home and this has given them confidence that they could fight for one of the top two places instead and they would look to begin that journey with a victory over the Leewards against whom they have lost only twice in the last 20 matches.

“I think this gives us a definite advantage over the other teams, but we have to take it one match at a time,” he said. “It will be a long season and we have done a lot of work on our fitness, so I think the players are well prepared for the hard slog ahead.

“We have done a lot of soul-searching and we have a number of experienced players in our team and we expect them to play key roles, particularly in the first few matches, and we will be looking to put all the negatives from the last season behind us.

“We lost the match last season after we put ourselves in a good position, but the Leewards have not played a match in Guyana for the last six years, so looking at them, they have a young team not accustomed to playing in the slow, low surfaces here.”

Leewards captain Devon Thomas said his side would draw confidence from that victory earlier this year.

“It will be a bit challenging, but I think we can come away with a good performance,” he said.

“We are all looking forward to this longer season, since it will give us a chance to recover if we stumble. Hopefully, the guys will make the most of every opportunity that comes to them.”

There are no major changes to the Playing Conditions for the Tournament.

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Shane Dowrich has been drafted into the Barbados squad as cover for fellow wicket-keeper/batsman Shai Hope, who is ill, for the opening round regional Professional Cricket League first-class match against Trinidad & Tobago in Port-of-Spain, starting Friday, November 14.

After the squad arrived in Trinidad on Tuesday night, practice sessions were held yesterday and today but Hope was unable to take part today and according to a medical opinion, he is unlikely to be fit for the four-day match.

Dowrich's omission from the original squad was due to a niggling injury.

"As a precaution Shane Dowrich, who has now been cleared by the medical panel, has been sent to Trinidad in the event that Shai is unable to participate in the game," the Barbados Cricket Association said in a release..

Brathwaite pulls Barbados from trouble

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Test opener Kraigg Brathwaite produced another masterful innings that culminated in an unbeaten hundred, as he pulled Barbados Pride out of trouble against Trinidad and Tobago Red Force, on the opening day of the first round of matches in the historic WICB Professional Cricket League on Friday.

The right-hander hit an unbeaten 115, his ninth first class hundred, as Barbados clawed their way back from 85 for four just after lunch, to finish the day on 209 for four at Queen’s Park Oval.

Sent in, Barbados were rocked by a superb spell of fast bowling from Marlon Richards who claimed the first three wickets to fall to reduce Barbados to 44 for three.

The right armer finished the day with three for 34.

Brathwaite’s knock then became part a rescue mission, as he put his head down to play a true captain’s role. In his now typical unflappable style, the 21-year-old repelled the T&T attack to haul Barbados back into the contest.

He faced 256 balls in just over five hours at the crease and struck nine fours, to frustrate the T&T outfit.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary Scores:

Barbados Pride 1st Innings: 209/4 (82 Overs). Kraigg Brathwaite* 115*, Shane Dowrich+ 50*, Roston Chase 24, Dwayne Smith 10; Marlon Richards 14-5-34-3, Shannon Gabriel 14-3-33-1, Yannick Ottley 4-0-7-0, Akeal Hosein 18-5-40-0.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He has so far shared a crucial unbroken fifth wicket stand of 115 with wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich who was unbeaten on exactly 50 at the close.

Dowrich was a last minute replacement for the ill Shai Hope.

T&T struck in the eighth over the day when left-hander Omar Phillips was caught behind by Denesh Ramdin for nine off Richards with the score on 22.

The aggressive Dwayne Smith struck two fours in ten but lasted just under half-hour when he too fell to the combination of Ramdin and Richards, to leave Barbados on 40 for three.

And T&T were sent into wild celebration in Richards’ next over with just four runs added when left-hander Jonathan Carter departed without scoring, also caught at the wicket off Richards.

Roston Chase arrived to join Brathwaite and they stemmed the fall of wickets with a solid 45-run stand which carried Barbados to lunch at 85 for three. At this stage Brathwaite was unbeaten on 41 and Chase, 24.

However, immediately after the break, Chase succumbed, lbw to pacer Shannon Gabriel in the first over on resumption. He faced 36 balls in 43 minutes at the crease and struck two fours.

Any hopes that T&T had of running through the remainder of the innings were quickly dashed as Brathwaite and Dowrich combined in the century stand to deny their opponents any further success. Navigating a near 40-minute break for rain, the duo were unfazed, and Brathwaite pushed on to complete his 25th first class half-century.

Dowrich, too, remained entrenched and has so faced 161 balls in just over three hours at the crease, and has struck five fours.

Brathwaite duo punish T&T Red Force

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – An incisive burst from seamer Carlos Brathwaite wrecked Trinidad and Tobago Red Force’s top order and left them in tatters on the second day of their opening round match against Barbados Pride here Saturday.

Responding to Barbados’s 360 all out, T&T were playing positively at 22 without loss before Brathwaite intervened with three quick wickets to rock the innings. The hosts never recovered and stumbled to the close at 89 for seven, still 271 runs behind on first innings.

Brathwaite has so far taken three for eight from nine immaculate overs while West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach has picked two for 25, including the precious wicket of West Indies Test captain Denesh Ramdin without scoring.

Yannick Cariah has so far top-scored for Red Force with 26 while opener Lendl Simmons scored 24.

When bad light stopped play, Imran Khan was not out on 13 and captain Rayad Emrit, on two.

Earlier, captain and opener Kraigg Brathwaite extended his overnight 115 not out to 182, as Barbados imposed themselves on the contest at Queen’s Park Oval.

Resuming the day on 209 for four, Barbados flourished through Brathwaite and wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich, who made 76. The pair added 217 runs for the fifth wicket, a partnership that put the game firmly in Barbados’ favour.

Overall, Brathwaite faced 361 balls and batted just over 7-1/2 hours, counting 17 fours while Dowrich, resuming the day on exactly 50, struck ten fours in an innings consuming 207 balls and lasting a shade over four hours.

When Dowrich and Carlos Brathwaite (0) fell in the same over to leg-spinner Imran Khan, Kraigg Brathwaite anchored two small partnerships to see his side past the 300-run mark.

He first added 33 for the seventh wicket with Jason Holder (17) and then put on a further 48 for the eighth wicket with Ashley Nurse who blasted three fours and two sixes in an attacking 29.

Speedster Marlon Richards finished with three for 51, Imran Khan picked up three for 75 while left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein claimed two for 56.

Carlos Brathwaite then took centre stage, sending back Evin Lewis for ten and Yannick Ottley for a first ball ‘duck’, both to catches at the wicket as T&T crashed to 22 for two.

The West Indies A captain then bowled Jason Mohammed for three to send T&T to tea at 43 for three. Off the first ball after the break, Simmons was caught at first slip by Dwayne Smith off Roach and two balls later, Ramdin was bowled by one that swung back from the Windies pacer.

Tottering at 42 for five, T&T tried to fight back through a 20-run, sixth wicket stand between Cariah and Hosein, who made nine.

However, off-spinner Nurse prised out Hosein to set T&T back again.
