Empire set to whoop it up

Barbados Nation article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - The ICBL Empire cricketers and fans could be celebrating their 100th anniversary by popping the champagne from as early as tea time or shortly afterwards today.

The Bank Hall-based “Home of Champions” should be opening their trophy cabinet to welcome their first top-level league title since 2004 as they need just two more points to be assured of this year’s LIME Elite championship.

After scoring the day’s highest total of 331 for seven against the under-strength Guardian General Barbados Youth on last Saturday’s opening day of the penultimate series, Empire are expected to declare at their overweek total.

The Empire bowlers, led by this season’s leading wicket-taker Jomel Warrican, who needs one more scalp for 50 wickets, will then be seeking to capture at least five wickets in the first instance for the first two bowling points.

The “Blues”, who won a record six consecutive games before drawing in the last series with the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP), are on 122 points.

Empire’s task has been made even easier because defending champions CGI Maple, who started the round on 87 points, surrendered their slim hopes of retaining the title by failing to get any batting points, capitulating for 70 against lowly LIME.

LIME, who will resume from 51 for one, will be seeking to score over 200 runs and not only collect at least two batting points, but also push for a victory over Maple.

A win would significantly ease LIME’s relegation worries after starting the round on 47 points, ahead of only Barbados Youth, who are exempt from demotion.

In a match at Paragon between two teams also looking to escape relegation, CounterPoint Wanderers dismissed BDFSP for 192 to earn four vital bowling points but made a shaky reply of 27 for two.

Having started the round on 54 points, the same as ESAF Pickwick, who gained four bowling points after dismissing Massy Stores Spartan for 175 at Foursquare Oval, Wanderers will be hoping to get a 200-plus total and collect batting points and first innings lead.

BDFSP, who are on 57 points, will however, be looking to limit Wanderers to under their total to get points for bowling and first innings honours.

Brathwaite Construction/Republic Bank St Catherine, who are not entirely out of relegation danger, collected seven points to move to 63 after routing traditionally strong Sagicor UWI for a paltry 75 and responding with 125 for seven at the close.

URGENT: Empire capture BCA Elite division Championship, Corbin cracks third ton and passes 700 runs

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - It was only a matter of time before ICBL Empire inevitably and fittingly captured the 2014 BCA Elite division Championship today in the 100th anniversary year of the great Bank Hall club.

En route to setting a modern era record of six straight wins and in the first six rounds as well, Jamal Smith's team grabbed Barbados' most prestigious domestic three-day title before tea at their cosy home ground, on the second day of the penultimate round of matches.

It was Empire's 21st title (rebranded Elite from Division 1 in 2012) of which three have been shared, and the first since 2004 when the side was captained by batsman Jason Haynes, who is still a member of the current team.

They have now won the title eight times in the last 26 seasons including seven between 1989 and 2004.

Empire's first ever title was in 1932-33, and apart from 2014, they were also winners in 1934-35, 1935-36, 1939-40, 1941-42, 1946, 1951 (shared with Carlton), 1956-57, 1962, 1963 (shared with Spartan), 1965, 1970, 1971, 1989, 1991 (shared with YMPC), 1993, 1995, 1996, 2000 and 2004.

Needing just two points at the start of the day's play in Series 9 to secure the coveted title, Empire achieved their goal at 1.38 p.m. - just under an hour before tea - when they took the fifth Guardian General Barbados Youth wicket with the score on 59 to move an an unassailable 124 points.

Rock-bottom Barbados Youth were eventually bowled out for 106 in 39.4 overs after Empire declared at their overweek first innings total of 331 for seven off 75.2 overs, which meant that Empire earned a further five points including three for first innings lead.

Off-spinner Roston Chase grabbed five for 15 off ten overs, while left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, despite picking up only one scalp, also achieved a personal feat of becoming the first bowler to take 50 wickets for the season.

Following-on, Barbados Youth battled to 101 for three off 29 overs by stumps with captain and all-rounder Nicholas Kirton hitting an enterprising, unbeaten 54.

But Barbados Youth, who are exempt from demotion, are expected on Sunday (tomorrow) to lose their sixth match of their worst ever season since promotion/relegation started in 2009.

And while the Empire players, club-mates and supporters were sipping champagne by nightfall, Kyle Corbin, the enterprising Sagicor Life UWI batsman was having a personal celebration on the opposite side of the island at Bayfield after becoming the first batsman to hit three centuries as well as reach 700 runs for the season when he hit 102 against Brathwaite Construction/Republic Bank St. Catherine.

Empire's title success was only waiting to be rubber stamped after they opened a 37-point lead over their closest rivals and last year's champions CGI Maple in mid-September, with three rounds of matches remaining.

It was then only a matter of how soon they would clinch the Cup in what was the longest period they had gone without the major league silverware since an 18-year drought ended in 1989.

Mathematically, Maple remained the only challengers going into this round (Series 2 has been rescheduled for October 18, 25 & 26, with Empire opposing Maple at Bank Hall) when they were 31 points adrift.

But Maple's very, very remote chances of even a share of the title were virtually dashed with an indifferent batting performance against relegation-worried LIME at Wildey on the opening day.

Empire's success came on a day which will also be long remembered for a couple bizarre incidents, one of which resulted in Massy Stores Spartan forfeiting a match at the virtual 'death' for a second straight season.

Spartan were unable to field the required number of players (seven) when the umpires took to the field at Foursquare Oval for ESA Field Pickwick to begin their reply to a first innings total of 175 all out.

According to Spartan team management, five of their players were ill, apparently suffering from Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne disease.

It meant that Pickwick gained the full 20 points, which would result in them moving from a worrying pre-series joint seventh with CounterPoint Wanderers, to a likely fourth place on 74 points by the end of the series.

Spartan will remain on 73 points.

LIME, desperate for their first win of the season, were frustrated by an unfortunate water problem which left part of the field saturated - resulting from a broken pipe - and which led to a late start by almost two hours.

They eventually gained a 106-run first innings lead but failed to pick up any batting points and must now press for a win which would push them to 63 points and lift their hopes of avoiding relegation going into their last round match against Wanderers at Wildey.

Wanderers have already secured nine points to move to 63 after gaining first innings as well as two batting points to add to their four for bowling against BDFSP at Paragon.

Should that match end in a draw, BDFSP, also in danger of relegation, will be on 60 points. They climax against Pickwick at Paragon.

As far as Spartan are concerned, last season, also in Series 9, controversy hit a sensational opening day's play when they were unable to produce a new ball for the start of LIME's second innings just before the scheduled close of play at Queen's Park after 20 wickets fell for 231 runs (LIME 107, Spartan 124).

Co-incidentally at that stage, Spartan had gone into the series in fourth position - the same place they occupied prior to the start of the current round - and ironically, LIME were also battling relegation.

Ultimately, LIME were awarded full points (20) while Spartan were allowed to keep the seven points they had earned for first innings and bowling, after rain washed out the entire last day's play.

At Bank Hall:

After Empire inevitably declared at their overweek first innings score of 331 for seven, Barbados Youth struggled in the first session as they limped to 98 for eight off 35 overs at tea.

Empire had wrapped up the title as early as 1.38 p.m. when off-spinner Roston Chase had Andrew Clarke snapped up at short-leg by Jason Haynes for 13 to leave Barbados Youth on 59 for five.

It meant that with two bowling points, Empire had moved to an unsurpassable 124 points.

Chase, who had taken four for 13 off eight overs by tea, managed his first 'five-for' of the season when he removed Michael Rawlins for ten to end with five for 15 off ten overs.

Javed Leacock topscored with 28 at No. 5.

Asked to follow-on, Barbados Youth, as they did in the previous series against Spartan at Queen's Park, showed fighting spirit by the close, though very wary that another defeat looms.

They reached 101 for three off 29 overs with captain Nicholas Kirton unbeaten on 54 off 53 balls in 77 minutes. He struck three threes and three fours.

Hasani Newton made 32. He and Kirton added 59 for the third wicket.

It was the second half-century of the season for Kirton, a Queen's College student and Barbados Under-17 and Under-19 player, who has played only four matches in the Elite division. He scored 70 against Spartan.

At Bayfield:

Kyle Corbin's third century of the season in the three-day championship - he also hit a hundred in the Sagicor General Super Cup tournament against Ince Transport MTW at Pine Basin last Sunday - has put UWI in a favourable position to force a win over St. Catherine.

After quickly wrapping up the home team's first innings by bowling them out for 146 in 47.2 overs from an overweek 125 for seven off 42 overs - a 71-run lead for St. Catherine -  UWI reached 281 for five off 71 overs in their second innings at stumps - an overall lead of 210.

Leg-spinner Keron Cottoy, a Vincentian, picked up two of the St. Catherine wickets today to end with five for 53 off 14.2 overs on his debut.

UWI were given a sound start of 64 in 18.1 overs in their second innings by Corbin and left-hander Anthony Alleyne before Alleyne was bowled by off-spinner Kenroy Williams for 22 which took an hour.

Then came a second wicket stand of 107 in 25.2 overs between Corbin and Kavem Hodge, one of seven non-nationals in a side, which as usual parades a vast majority of players with first-class experience, but yet complain that they have lost key men this season for whatever reason.

Corbin was next dismissed by off-spinner Shamar Cooke, the St. Catherine captain. His 102 came in 157 minutes off 127 balls and contained 11 fours and two sixes.

The 24-year-old Corbin now has 724 runs (ave: 55.69) with his three centuries including a double. He has also shown good form in the Sagicor Super Cup with 266 runs (ave: 53.20).

It was the second time that Corbin had amassed over 700 runs in a league season. In 2009, he made 793 (ave: 37.76) including just one hundred and seven half-centuries, also for UWI - who won the first of four consecutive titles.

Hodge and Yannick Ottley added 63 in 12.3 overs for the third wicket before Ottley was bowled by left-arm spinner Derick Bishop for 33 off 41 balls including two fours and one six.

Bishop also removed Hodge, leg before wicket for 78, which came in 164 minutes off 135 balls and included four boundaries.

Romel Currency was unbeaten on 28 at stumps with Bishop picking up three for 61 off 61 overs to move to 40 wickets for the season.

At Foursquare Oval:

Pickwick won by default from Spartan who were unable to field the required number of players (seven) at the start of play on the second day.

Spartan had made 175 all out in their first innings on the opening day and when umpires Gregory Brathwaite, of international status, and the youthful Kevin Sisnett took to the field for the 11:30 a.m. start, Spartan only had six players.

The Spartan team management said the others were ill, apparently suffering from the mosquito-borne disease, Chikungunya.

Hence, Pickwick picked up the maximum 20 points to move to 74, and Spartan got none, remaining on 73.

At Paragon:

Wanderers owed their position mainly to a 123-run fourth wicket partnership between Jonathan Drakes and Shayne Moseley, who both fell in the 70s while recording their highest scores for the season.

Starting the day on 27 for two in reply to BDFSP's first innings of 192 all out, Spartan were bowled out for 230 in 81 overs. Effectively, the last seven wickets fell for 60 runs in 25.2 overs.

Drakes topscored with 77 in 216 minutes off 159 balls with five boundaries before he was fifth out, bowled by off-spinner Renaldo Brathwaite.

Left-hander Moseley was a leg before wicket victim off fast bowler Rachid O'Neale for 71. He was at the crease for 152 minutes, faced 135 deliveries and struck five fours and one six.

After 75 overs (the cut-off point for determining batting and bowling points), Wanderers were 214 for eight, which meant they picked up two batting points, while BDFSP gained three bowling points.

O'Neale took three for 46 off 16 overs and Brathwaite, three for 62 off 25 overs.

BDFSP will resume on two without loss.

At Wildey:

Despite the frustration of a late start by almost two hours due to very wet conditions on the eastern side of field, caused by a damaged pipe, and which also affected the bowlers' run-up at the northern end, LIME are still in a favourable position to force a win over Maple.

Resuming on 51 for one off 16 overs in reply to Maple's first innings of 70 - play started 115 minutes late - LIME were bowled out for 179 in 62 overs.

Fast bowling all-rounder Javon Searles and the inexperienced Matthew Greaves were the joint topscorers with 33, having featured in a seventh wicket stand of 57.

Pacer Khalid Springer took four for 28 off 14 overs and left-arm spinner Jamar Griffith, three for 71 off 24 overs.

BCA and Miller agree mutual separation

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Following is a release re the BCA and former Chief Executive Officer, Jefferson Miller:

The Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) and Mr. Jefferson Miller have agreed to a mutual separation.

Consistent with the BCA’s commitment to transparency in its operations and its adherence to good governance principles, the BCA also wishes to take this opportunity to address the misinformation circulating in the press and on social media regarding the process which led to the appointment of Mr. Miller:

The facts are as follows:

1. The BCA contracted the professional recruitment agency Profiles Caribbean Inc. to assist in the recruitment of a Chief Executive Officer.

2. An advertisement was subsequently placed in the local papers and online in September 2013.

3. 24 applicants applied for the post, including Mr. Miller. 7 candidates were initially shortlisted and the list was thereafter reduced to 5 in March 2014. Mr. Miller was included on both of these lists.

4. A second round of interviews was subsequently held in May 2014 with the 2 remaining candidates, one of whom was Mr. Miller.

5. When Mr. Miller presented for the second round of interviews, upon the BCA’s request, he furnished the BCA with a character certificate issued by the Broward Sherriff’s Office Records Division – Sherriff Office Broward County dated May 15th, 2014.

6. The BCA thereafter contacted the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and conducted a state wide search of Mr. Miller. This search indicated that Mr. Miller did not have an arrest record.

7. Mr. Miller also provided the BCA with the appropriate number of references including one written by the Mayor of the City of Lauderhill, Florida, Mr. Richard J. Kaplan and another from a prominent local attorney.

8. Mr. Miller’s tenure with the BCA commenced on June 23rd, 2014.

9. Mr. Miller requested leave from the BCA in July 2014 to attend to what he described as an urgent personal medical matter overseas.

10. Recent developments indicate that Mr. Miller was sentenced in Florida for a criminal offence on July 25th, 2014, a full month after being initially contracted.

The BCA wishes in the circumstances to assure its membership, and the public, that all reasonable due diligence was conducted in this matter, prior to the appointment of Mr. Miller to the post of Chief Executive Officer of the BCA, as the above factual timeline confirms.

Significantly, the information regarding Mr. Miller’s conviction and sentence came to light subsequent to Mr. Miller’s completion of his probationary period and confirmation by the BCA’s Board on September 22nd, 2014.

The BCA remains focused on and committed to its mandate of promoting and developing cricket - this nation’s most treasured sport.

Smith disappointed after missing ton

Cricinfo article.

Delhi, India - After more than 10 years, and in his 93rd ODI, Dwayne Smith finally looked set to score his first international hundred in limited-overs cricket.

West Indies, having done well to keep India to 263, were well-placed at 170 for 2 and were on their way to secure a morale-boosting 2-0 lead in the series with a win at the Ferozeshah Kotla.

However, for the second time in the series, Smith fell to a bowler after hitting him for a six and was bowled by Mohammed Shami. Smith's departure for 97 triggered a West Indies collapse as the visitors folded for 215, and the batsman was disappointed at having missed out on a century and with the way his team-mates unraveled in the face of some incisive bowling.

"I'm disappointed. I worked really hard during the CPL and since I came here to India, I really wanted to make my mark in this series," Smith said. "Tonight I was looking to bat all the way through and take the team to victory. Someone needed to bat to the end and see the game home but unfortunately I wasn't able to complete the job. We came close tonight and victory, would have made it 2-0, so as a team we are disappointed. We have to give India credit. They bowled well and stuck to their plans.

"We know where we went wrong. We know we didn't bat as well as we should have. But it's 1-1 now in the series with three more matches to go. We are still well and truly in this series. We will look to come back and win the series. We have what it takes to win."

Smith was the second highest run-scorer in IPL 2014 and has been in good touch in Twenty20 cricket, aiding Barbados Tridents in their CPL title triumph. His ODI form since his return to the team in February, however, has been inconsistent: he managed just one fifty, against Ireland, in the four games preceding this series and had missed the limited-overs legs of the series against New Zealand and Bangladesh. Smith, though, said he backed his technique to come good on a two-paced Feroz Shah Kotla track.

"I went to the nets and changed a few things for this pitch. I have played here close to 10 times so I know how this pitch plays. It's not a bad pitch but you have to be watchful and know your scoring areas," Smith said.

"You have to really settle yourself and pace your innings on this pitch. You have to look to get on the front foot and back your technique."

New champions Empire record 7th win but LIME lashed by light in Elite division

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - New BCA Elite division champions ICBL Empire celebrated their memorable success in their centenary year with a swift demolition of Guardian General Barbados Youth by an innings and 87 runs at Bank Hall to record their seventh win in eight matches.

But with only one series remaining, LIME, in great danger of being relegated for the second time in four seasons, were left dumbfounded by a bold decision by umpires Bertnul Ricardo Harrison and Troy Tudor to end play in fading, though not dangerous light at 5:31 p.m. when they were making a great effort to beat dethroned champions CGI Maple at Wildey.

Chasing 98 to win in 18 overs, which started at 4:34 p.m., captain Randy Thomas and Ashley Nurse had spurred LIME to 77 for two in only ten overs when Harrison, standing at the northern end, and Tudor met for a brief discussion and then pulled stumps.

Immediately, LIME supporters vociferously expressed their disgust at the decision, going as far as arguing that Maple wasted crucial time with their field placing in the dying stages.

The voice of one man was so loud that it echoed all the way to the east of the ground.

The disgruntled man contended that even the last over bowled by left-arm spinner Jamar Griffith from the north, and which included a couple no-balls, had taken a "long time" to start and end with the field placing. He, like others, felt that for a team to send down only ten overs in virtually an hour was pathetic.

Thomas was unbeaten on 35 and Nurse was on 22 in an admirable partnership of 50.

The result left LIME still second last in the table - a position they have held for the last five rounds - on 54 points (rock-bottom Barbados Youth on 19 points are exempt from demotion).

LIME must now win with as many points as possible on home turf against CounterPoint Wanderers, who are joint sixth with Brathwaite Construction/Republic Bank St. Catherine on 63 points, to stand a chance of not being relegated to Division 1. They were demoted at the end of the 2011 championship (rebranded Elite division in 2012) and returned to the major league in 2013.

The rescheduled second round will climax the 2014 competition on October 18, 25 & 26.

Having secured their 21st top league Championship before tea on Saturday, Empire brushed aside Barbados Youth as early as 1:17 p.m. today.

In so doing, Jamal Smith's team emulated former gurus Sagicor Life UWI in winning seven matches since the Championship was contested among ten teams in a modern era of restructuring, featuring promotion and demotion, introduced in 2009 with 16 teams.

Empire now have a chance to set yet another record with a victory over Maple at Bank Hall, having won six consecutive matches - and amazingly from the start of the season - a feat no other team achieved for sure in the last three-and-a-half decades.

Now on 138 points, Empire also earned more points and had a wider gap over the second placed side at a similar stage, than UWI two years ago when the 3Ws Oval-based team swept to the third of four straight titles with one round of matches remaining.

At this stage, Empire are 46 points clear of second-placed Maple.

In 2012 when UWI captured the title by the penultimate series, they had 135 points - 40 more than their closest rivals, ironically Empire. Ultimately, UWI finished on 146 points with Empire second on 99.

With ESA Field Pickwick having won by default from Massy Stores Spartan at Foursquare Oval on Saturday, interest in the other matches surrounded those teams battling to avoid relegation.

Apart from what transpired at Wildey, BDFSP, who are third last on 62 points, drew with Wanderers at Paragon, while St. Catherine battled to an exciting draw with UWI at Bayfield after wet conditions wiped out play in the pre-tea session.

As is stands, there could be intrigue right down to the wire among those in the relegation zone (See Points table and fixtures below).

At Bank Hall:

Empire wasted little time in condemning beleaguered Barbados Youth to their sixth defeat in their most wretched season since the introduction of promotion/relegation.

Resuming on 101 for three in their second innings after following on with a deficit of 225, Barbados Youth lasted just 16 more overs before they were bowled out for 138 in 45 overs.

Captain and all-rounder Nicholas Kirton was first dismissed without adding to his overnight score of 54, after five runs were scored. He fell to pacer Justin Greaves, having batted all told for 83 minutes and faced 55 balls, striking 11 threes and two fours.

Javed Leacock, who resumed on one, and Andrew Clarke, however, managed to stick around for 6.3 overs during which they added 15 before the last six wickets crashed for 17 runs in 8.4 overs and the match was over by 1:17 p.m.

Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican took three of the last four wickets including the very last to finish with three for 17 off 11 overs, pushing his tally of wickets to 53 - the most in the championship since it was contested among ten teams in 2012.

Pacer Tennyson Roach picked up three for 29 off ten overs and Greaves, two for 26 off six overs.

At Wildey:

LIME could feel cheated at not being given a chance to face at least two more overs despite fading light.

Set 98 to win in ten overs, captain Randy Thomas and all-rounder Ashley Nurse, in the face of a slow Maple over-rate, were making an excellent effort and had taken the score from 27 for two to 77 without further loss in ten overs when umpires Bertnul Ricardo Harrison and Troy Tudor met and pulled stumps at 5:31 p.m.

The LIME players and supporters were stunned and instantly one voice was so loud in condemnation of the decision by the umpires that it echoed all the way to the east of the ground.

The disgruntled man argued that even the last over bowled by left-arm spinner Jamar Griffith and which included a couple no-balls, had taken a "long time" to start and end with the field placing.

Thomas was unbeaten on 35 and Nurse was on 22.

Starting their second innings with a first innings deficit of 109, Maple rallied from 147 for seven off 41.5 overs at tea to 206 all out in 62 overs. That was frustrating for LIME.

Opener Shane Parris topscored with 64, while Haroon Austin made 32.

Towards the end, experienced all-rounder Khalid Springer scored 29.

Off-spinner Nurse took four for 51 off 20 overs.

Springer then returned o remove Justin Brathwaite (four) and Nekoli Parris (eight) before the bold effort by Thomas and Nurse went to naught in fading light.

At Bayfield:

With rain having resulted in the complete loss of the pre-tea session, UWI declared at their overnight second innings score of 281 for five, setting St. Catherine 211 to win in 38 overs.

The home side lost two early wickets and then recovered through a third wicket stand of 64 between captain Shamar Cooke and Alston Bobb.

They then slipped to 118 for six before rallying to 177 for eight off 38 overs.

Cooke topscored with 39 while veteran Patrick Browne contributed 33 not out, Bobb, 31 and all-rounder Kenroy Williams, 25, which carried his aggregate for the season to 522.

Leg-spinner Keron Cottoy was the leading wicket-taker with three for 37 off 12 overs.

At Paragon:

BDFSP battled to a dull draw with Wanderers.

Resuming their second innings on two without loss after being led on first innings by 38 runs, the home side batted all day to score 151 for four off 63.3 overs.

Opener Renaldo Brathwaite topscored with 53 in 158 minutes off 130 balls with one six.

Brathwaite and left-hander Mario Rampersaud (29) added 66 in 26.5 overs to set the stage for the dour batting.

No. 3 Dario Boyce further underlined BDFSP's mindset with an unbeaten 27 in 138 minutes off 125 balls.

Captain Antonio Greenidge was the met enterprising, scoring 31 in 69 minutes off 50 deliveries including three fours and one six.

Renaldo Arthur, better known as a wicket-keeper/batsman, but whose off-spin bowling has been gradually improving, took three for 23 off 9.3 overs.

Cricinfo article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Ian Bradshaw recounts West Indies' heroic chase in the Champions Trophy final, his shortlived Test career, and what it takes to bowl long spells.

Subash Jayaraman: You were the captain of the Under-19 West Indies team and the Barbados captain as well at one time. Did those opportunities to lead a side allow you to dream of captaining the West Indies team also?

Ian Bradshaw: I think it is a dream of any young cricketer to lead their nation in international cricket. I won't deny the fact that as I grew up, one of the things I wanted to do in my time was to lead the West Indies team. Unfortunately, that did not happen. But I got to lead my native country, Barbados. That was a great opportunity for me. We actually won the cup that year. And then, also before that I led the U-19 team. That was a privilege as well.

I can give you a story about the opportunity I might have had to lead the West Indies ODI team. We were playing a match in India. I was asked to be the vice-captain for the game if necessary. I think Brian Lara was the captain, he didn't play the match and Chris Gayle led the team. I remember at the water break, Chris had to go off quickly, and I thought, "Ian, this is your moment in time."

Just as I was about to get the guys together and make a plan I saw Chris running back down the stairs and thought, "Oh no! Opportunity gone." My dream was never realised. But to have played [for West Indies], I can live with that.

SJ: You were always known as a guy who put substance over style. But, naturally, you associate West Indies players with style over substance. Would that have been a right fit for you?

IB: I do not quite agree that West Indies cricketers are all style and flair. We have been labelled as that for years. It is true that we have been blessed with guys who are athletic enough and explosive enough that their performances are ones that the people want to come out and see. Over the years, the great Sir Garfield Sobers - he batted and fielded and even in the way he walked to the wicket - it was so captivating.

Then you had someone like Sir Vivian Richards - so dominant and powerful. Then in the later years, Brian Lara. We have always had players in the West Indies who were naturally blessed, who play the game well and play in a manner that is attractive to watch. Not everyone can do that. So you find a person, probably like myself, who just tries to concentrate and get the most out of our limited talent. We let our talent speak, our performances speak for themselves.

SJ: You were an accurate bowler who tied the batsmen down, which may not work in the death overs. But Lara made you bowl at the death even though it didn't really suit you. What are your thoughts on Lara's captaincy, on how he utilised you as a player?

IB: Within a team environment, you have to understand that we all have our places. I remember clearly, in my early stages, Brian speaking to the team about understanding our role within the team, doing things that would be for the good of the team. That's what we tried to achieve as a group and Brian as a leader tried to get the most out of the team. We could all sit back and say that this guy's captaincy was strange, some of his choices were questionable. Once you are a leader, you get all those questions.

But I didn't have any problems playing under Brian Lara, nor did I have any problem under Shiv [Chanderpaul]. They all had individual strengths. But when you play as a team, it is a matter of how you fit into the team concept and what you are trying to achieve as a team. That is what we tried to focus on in the team when I was there.

SJ: You look at Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar - both phenomenal batsmen, but not great captains. Would West Indies cricket have been better served if someone else had been captaining the team and Brian Lara been given the responsibility of just batting?

IB: I don't want to compare the different teams, because you should understand that Sachin played in a team where he had the support of so many other greats at the time. Brian didn't have that. Quite often we sit on the sidelines and make a judgement on whether that guy is a good captain or a bad captain. Sometimes you are as good as the team that you select, that you are asked to lead.

I think it will be really folly for us to say that those great guys were not great captains. Yes, they may not have records that stack up against the all-time great captains, but you just look a bit deeper for reasons why they were not successful during their tenure. In our case in the West Indies, in the last 20 years or so, we haven't had good results. I don't think anyone captaining can take responsibility for that.

We, just as a group, were not strong enough to put up consistent performances. I can't support the theory that this guy is a bad captain just because the performance on the field didn't quite match up.

SJ: One of the Tests that you played in was a thrilling draw at St John's. The last pair of Corey Collymore and Fidel Edwards batted a little more than three overs to secure the draw. But, in the second innings you bowled 40 overs including a marathon 25-over spell. How exhausted were you after that spell?

IB: It was a really tiring day on a flat wicket. The Indian team had enough time in the game to build up a lead, so the batsmen were not taking any chances. It was a flat wicket, and any batsman can sit back and score. It wasn't easy. I kept running in, hitting my lengths and trying to create opportunities, but those guys batted really well. The opening batsmen [Wasim Jaffer] dug in and he got a good score for himself.

I just told myself: "Ian, you can't put in all this effort for no reward." I got a couple of wickets or so in that match. More importantly, I was able to control the scoring. I didn't let the game get away from us. By the time they chose to declare, the time that we had to bat out the game was greatly reduced. I think that was important.

If you had to go back to some of my first-class games, I grew up bowling long spells playing for Barbados. Once you are fit, it is just a matter of mental strength, trying to keep your concentration for that length of time. Once you put in your work before hand, you will get through. What I will tell you is that after the game I was very tired. After a couple of days, the stiffness really kicked in.

In the heat of the moment, you are bowling for your country and you are doing what has to be done. That was probably my third Test. I was new into the team. You don't really want to not have the ball in your hand. I was trying to make a name for myself. I didn't think too much when I was given the opportunity.

SJ: I am assuming you would have loved to have played more Tests. Why do you think that did not pan out that way?

IB: I will be really honest and say that in Test cricket you need your four most penetrative bowlers to play. If you look at it, I probably wouldn't have fit in the top four consistently. That was one of the reasons why I didn't go on to play more Test matches. I started late in my career, age-wise. I wasn't going to play 15 years of Test cricket. But, as I said, I am happy to have played the five.

They were the games that I will always remember. It is always a cricketer's dream to play Test cricket. You can play some ODI games and have some success, but to play ODI games and not play Tests would have been a disappointment for me. So I am happy to have played the bit of Test cricket that I did.

SJ: The 2007 World Cup was the home tournament for you guys, but West Indies' World Cup campaign ended disappointingly. You lost three or four games in the Super Eights. What are your memories from that World Cup?

IB: As you quite rightly said, it was disappointing, let's not make any joke about it. We were hosting the World Cup for the first time and we felt that we could have done much better. Having played in the Champions Trophy in the previous year and having reached the final, we felt that we had a combination that could have done pretty well in the World Cup. Unfortunately, we lost our way in the second-round games.

We got into a bad run. In the World Cup where every team is tuned in and looking to win, it is pretty hard to catch up once you lose a couple of games. We were really disappointed as a group. We felt that we had the talent and playing at home, we thought that we should have gone further than that in that competition.

But one of the guys who was in that group who is still playing now in ODIs and T20s version that has come up. You could have seen that the experience has come in through, to the World T20 that we won in 2012. You can see some of the hunger, having been burnt earlier in the World Cup.

You can see what it meant to guys like Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo, when they played in that World Cup. They were saying: "This is our opportunity and we are going to seize it." Yes, it was disappointing, but it did serve as a motivation for future success.

SJ: Was there any additional pressure of playing in front of your home crowd, being expected to win the trophy?

IB: Yes, there was that expectation because it was held in the Caribbean. But we knew that. We were not going to use that as an excuse. There was pressure, always. But it was a special occasion for us to host the World Cup. We were expected to win.

I said before, if you looked at our record into the World Cup, it was fantastic. It was one that actually suggested that we had the tools and the group to progress further. We let down our people, we understood that. We felt it. But sometimes in sport, these are the kind of disappointment that sportsmen have to deal with.

SJ: In the 2004 Champions Trophy final against England, you had a partnership of 71 with Courtney Browne which won the game for West Indies. A listener asks if you get tired of being asked of that partnership?

IB: There is no doubt that you get asked questions about how the game was, if you were nervous, if it was dark. There were a lot of things that they want to know. Do I get tired of it? Not really. I can't say I get tired of it, because I am usually asked that question by different people, with a different perspective on what they are trying to find out.

It is one that I always try to take my time and go back and think it through. There is always someone who watched it from the side, some sort of perspective in the game that they were considering that you never thought about. I remember someone asking me before if it was good to have taken the light and come back when it was brighter. We had the momentum, the opposition was down.

To give them a chance to recharge and regroup, would not have been the best option. Especially when you are speaking to someone who is a true cricket lover and not who is just watching for the fours and sixes. They appreciate the intricate turns the game can take. It is always good to reflect on finer moments with persons like that.

SJ: Regarding the decision to stay - was that yours and Courtney's decision, or did the dressing room also chip in?

IB: That was solely Courtney's and my decision. I don't remember a lot of messages coming out of the dressing room. I guess they trusted our instincts. What I can remember is looking at our guys on the balcony cheering our runs.

You can feel that energy coming from within. But I guess they knew that between Courtney and I, we had a pretty good understanding of the game situations and tactics. I don't think there was any need to send in messages. All we wanted to do was concentrate and keep the pressure on the opposition and let them worry about the home support put against them.

SJ: What were you thinking when Chanderpaul was out with the score on 147? What was said between you and Courtney when you walked in, and when the partnership was developing?

IB: One thing I remember is the English guys celebrating when they got Shiv out. They were ecstatic. We came back and watched them on the video. They probably thought at that time that Shiv was the last hurdle they had to get past.

When I walked out to bat with Courtney, it was just one of these games. We'd played a lot of cricket together, he was my captain for so many years. I just joined in and said, "Skip, what do we do now?" He said that we have a lot of overs to bat and the asking rate was not anything challenging. It was just above four runs an over when I came in, so we didn't have to worry about the run rate.

What they did early was, they brought their key bowlers in [Steven] Harmison and Andrew Flintoff. Those were the bowlers who could contain us. There was Alex Wharf and Darren Gough - fine bowler but he wasn't having one of his best days. We knew that once we got past their strike bowlers, we would have to throw it away then. It was just a matter of understanding.

Then we got some momentum and we saw panic in their eyes. You could see the uncertainty, which you could see in their decision making. Bowlers who were seaming the ball all over the place, now were uncertain about which length to bowl. We got a perfect chance to put the pressure back onto them and then just take it home.

By that time, funnily enough, the crowd really got into it. Yes, we were playing in England but it was a multi-nation tournament. There would have been some Indian fans there, some Sri Lankan fans, some Australian. Anybody that was not an English fan was a West Indies fan that day. You could hear the crowd just come to life with every single over that passed. We just rode that wave straight home.

We played a lot of cricket with Corey Collymore too. We could have left him with 40 or 50 runs to get. But we knew that if one of us had to get out, and still had runs to get, Corey is that sort of never-say-die character who would come out there and try really, really hard. We still back that we could have gotten home if one of us had gotten out. But when you are playing cricket, and can take it home, you don't leave it to the next man. And hey, the rest is history.

SJ: You have been playing for the Wanderers Cricket Club (in Barbados) for a while and have captained them. How has the club cricket scene in Barbados changed over the years from when you first started playing cricket?

IB: When I started playing cricket, I found that there were a lot more mature cricketers playing in the top flight. More guys had that level of game awareness. That has changed a bit in the last five to ten years in particular. You have now a younger average age of cricketers in our top flight. While these guys are very talented, because they have not played that level of cricket yet, you still see a lot of unnecessary mistakes being made at that level. I think that is probably one of the most striking things coming out.

Certainly there is no question of a lack of talent; there is a lot of talent seen in every weekend that you turn out. The covered wickets we have now has ensured that we have more play, which is good, because where we play and the torrential nature of rains, sometimes we get one harsh shower and that is it for the day. Now, because of the covers, we get better services to play cricket consistently. The hope now is to get a little bit more experience coming through with these guys to play a smarter brand of cricket.

SJ: Why do you think that change has happened?

IB: What would have happened over the years is that you find the average age of the other clubs are increasing because you have a situation where guys find it easier to gravitate down into the lower divisions, maybe for family reasons or lack of motivation for playing at the higher level. There always seems to be a push, in many clubs, just to find new talent.

In the search of this new talent you always push in younger guys all the time and pushing out some guys who may not go on and play Barbados cricket. But in the past those [experienced] guys would have been good servants to your local club. Because of that, and because you find so much of those mature faces pushed down to the lower division, it has made it easier for these younger guys to get to play in the top flight.

Years ago, what would have happened is that those guys would have had to sit on the sidelines, be a 12th man for a couple of games and work their way into the team. Now, the guys probably get into the team a bit too easy. Because of that, they are not valuing the play enough.

Joseph takes two hat-tricks for Bayley’s

Barbados Nation article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Daniel Joseph sent everyone scrambling yesterday. And it wasnt just his bowling that had people in trouble.

The eight-year-old Bayley’s Primary student sent National Sports Council officials scrambling for the record books, after what must be a record in the Guardian Group Herman Griffith Primary Schools’ Cricket Competition yesterday.

He took two hat-tricks and ended with the remarkable figures of eight for 13 against St Mark’s Primary.

Joseph who is one of  a twin, with his brother Darius also playing on the team, single-handedly skittled out St Mark’s for a paltry 26 in just ten overs.

Powerhouse Bayley’s had rattled up 211 for four at their home ground with Jayden Small scoring 54 and Azari Best making an unbeaten 49.

Bayley’s have now played and won all three games in the 2014 season.

Also in winner’s row yesterday were St Giles Primary, who continued their good run with an easy 98-run victory over George lamming at Blenheim.

Jomorio St Hill led the way for St. Giles, pulling off a number of trademark drives en route to making 52, as his side piled up 146.

George Lamming came up quite short in reply, scoring only 55.

Another powerhouse side, St Stephen’s Primary played on easy street yesterday, beating Lawrence T. Gay by seven wickets at the Desmond Haynes Playing Field in St James.

Adje Maynard and Kyron Alexander took three wickets apiece for St. Stephen’s as they dismantled the Lawrence T. Gay line-up, reducing them to 29 all out. Getting the result was a formality for St Stephen’s in spite of them losing three wickets before reaching 35 to earn the win.

One of the closer encounters was at Lowlands, St Lucy, where Gordon Greenidge Primary defeated Ignatius Byer by only 24 runs. Gordon Greenidge were first up and made 88 for 5, before bowling out their opponents for 64. Saurav Worrell was the destroyer, taking 5 for 15, inclusive of a hat-trick.

Sobers - Don't get out till you pass 365

Trinidad Guardian article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - West Indies cricket legend Sir Gary Sobers yesterday revealed that he gave Brian Lara, the reigning batting champion, his blessings to break his (Sobers) world record of 365 not out, back in 1994.

Lara broke Sobers’ 36-year-old Test score of 365 runs with an inning of 375 against England at Antigua recreation Ground in 1994.

Speaking at a charity luncheon hosted by The Children’s Ark held at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad, on Dock Road in Port-of-Spain, yesterday, with the theme Batting for Children he said, “When I went to Antigua that particular day, I think I was celebrating 50 years of Test cricket and I remember Brian was about 230-odd runs and when he went back into the dressing room.”

The elder batsman went into the dressing room and said to him, “Look! You don’t get out. Don’t you get out till you pass 365! You go out there and you get it. Every time somebody got 200, the phone would ring, the reporters would ring and they would say so you think he can break your record. I got a little bit fed-up with that so I thought that Brian deserved some of that.”

Sobers added, “I told him that. So when he broke it, I was very pleased for him, because records are there to be broken. I wasn’t one of those players who looked into making records and breaking records. My whole make-up in West Indies cricket or any team that I played for was to play for the team; to do my best.”
