Rampaul: CLT20 good preparation for tour

By CMC.

MUMBAI, India – Seasoned West Indies seamer Ravi Rampaul believes his Champions League Twenty20 campaign will serve him well in the One-Day International series against India starting next Wednesday.

The right-armer spearheaded the Barbados Tridents attack during the CLT20, taking five wickets as the Caribbean side won just one of their four preliminary games to miss out on the semi-final round.

Rampaul will now turn his attention to West Indies duty as the regional side take on India in five ODIs.

“This exposure will help me prepare for the upcoming five-match ODI series. This will definitely help me in getting used to the conditions here in India and I will try and do well in the one-day series,” Rampaul said.

“I understand it is a longer format of the game and you require a lot more patience. I will be looking to assess the conditions and the pitches properly and then use the right variations at the right time.”

Rampaul will form part of a formidable pace attack for the series, which includes Kemar Roach, Jerome Taylor and Jason Holder.

The attack will also include captain Dwayne Bravo who bowls medium pace and former captain Darren Sammy, who also bowls medium.

Rampaul said he expected a lot from the team’s seam attack.

“The squad that we will be bringing here has some good fast bowlers in the ranks,” the Trinidadian said.

“We have Jason Holder and the experienced Jerome Taylor and Kemar Roach coming back into the squad. Once we rally along each other as a fast bowling unit, I think we can perform very well.”

Rampaul will taste action on Friday when West Indies face India A in the first tour match of the series Brabourne Stadium. The Windies will also play India A again on Sunday at Wankhede Stadium.

The 29-year-old Rampaul has taken 112 wickets from 88 ODIs.

Caribbean cricketers performed well in T&DCA Elite final

In his first year as captain of Brampton Masters Tranzac Cricket Club team, Rizwan Cheema, has credited the side to total focus following their triumph over Centurions on Sunday at King City, Toronto.

The former Senior Canadian International skipper declared that Brampton Masters Tranzac played excellent cricket and certainly deserved the Toronto and District Cricket Association (T&DCA) 50-over championship again after relinquishing it in 2013 to the same opponents.

“I think we played well this season; we had a good team with talented players and we [are] happy to be the champion,” the pugnacious right-hander related.

Brampton Masters Tranzac emerged by a comfortable four-wicket margin after chased down Centurions’ inadequate 148 all out off 45.4 overs.

“Our performances were generally good this season; we lost one and two matches but our goal was to win this season and we did it having dreamt about lifting the trophy too,” a smiling Cheema commented.

Despite an impressive 62 from Barbadian Ryan Wiggins and 37 Jade Padmore, off-spinner and Canada player Hiral Patel nabbed four wickets for 25 runs from his 8.5 tidy overs. He was admirably supported by left-arm pacer and Windward Islands quickie Delorn Johnson, who finished with 3-24 off 7 overs.

“Patel bowled and batted really well throughout the tournament and he came good again in the final match while everyone also put in good performances so it was a total team’s effort,” the medium-pacer, who has so far featured in 33 ODIs, 16 T20s and 8 four-day matches internationally for the North American country, mentioned.

When Brampton Masters Tranzac batted, Verun Shadev led the way with a composed 40 while former Guyana wicketkeeper/batsman Darwin Christian hit a stylist 39 and useful contributions came from national opener Ruvindu Gunasekera (23) and Patel (19).

Cheema also stated the team was very confident initially and knew once they played to their natural ability, success was definitely on again to win this coveted trophy at the world-renowned King City facility.

“I knew what our focus was and what we were aiming for this year; everybody was willing and confident to make an impression and produce good performances and the feeling is absolutely great to win the championship,” the Pakistani-born cricketer asserted.

He led PCB team sometime back to the Elite Division trophy but his third year for Brampton Masters Tranzac has been enjoyable as he showed consistency with both bat and ball.

He also took the opportunity to say that this level of cricket will definitely boost the morale and confidence of Canada’s team when participating in International Cricket Council tournaments.

“You have got a lot of young players around and the atmosphere is wonderful and that will lift the spirit of your team and players to be very competitive as well.”

The 36-year-old continued to reckon:

“So I know aspiring Canadian cricketers are learning quickly and trying to develop their game in all aspects as they mix with players consistently coming from the West Indies, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and other cricketing nations.”

Former Guyana skipper Damodar Daesrath and fast-bowler Jeremy Gordon also attired again in the Brampton Masters Tranzac’s colours to be among the Caribbean players.

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - An attacking, unbeaten knock of 80 by opener Shanaldo Taylor spurred DHL to a seven-wicket win over defending champions CAH RAMP in the third annual Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) Twenty20 tapeball tournament.

Left-hander Taylor, a former BCA Division 1 player for Bristol, Dover and Banks, struck five fours and four sixes in his 51-ball knock as DHL, chasing 195 to win, triumphed with 3.4 overs to spare in the nightcap match at Rices on Tuesday.

He added 108 for the second wicket with Corey Scantlebury, a BCL player, who made 47 off 33 balls inclusive of four fours and the same number of sixes.

To underline their brisk partnership, 50 runs were added by the sixth over and 100 by the ninth.

Diego Stuart, the Wanderers Elite division captain, made 38 not out.

Taking advantage of a chance when only three, Stuart tore into Amory Holder, hitting him for two sixes, a two, a four and another six as Holder ended with one for 56 off four overs.

It was the fourth highest run chase in the tournament.

HYDERABAD, India, CMC – West Indies allrounder Dwayne Bravo roared to a powerful half century as Chennai Super Kings brushed aside King X1 Punjab by 65 runs in the second semi-final of the Champions League T20 tournament at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Thursday.

Bravo smashed a top score of 67 to pull Super Kings from a precarious slump to anchor a lopsided win and the right to contest the finals on Saturday against Kolkata Knight Riders.

The Trinidad and Tobago cricketer gathered his runs in just 39 balls and was the main reason Super Kings managed 182 before bowling out Punjab for 117 in 18.2 overs.

He slashed, drove, cut and flicked, hitting seven fours and three sixes and revived Super Kings from a struggling 41 for three after Parvinder Awana's destroyed the top order with a hat-trick.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary Scores:

Chennai Super Kings: 182/7 (20 Overs). Dwayne Bravo 67, Faf du Plessis 46, Ravindra Jadeja 27*, Dwayne Smith 14; Parvinder Awana 4-0-30-4, Akshar Patel 4-0-30-2, Thisara Perera 4-0-41-1, Karanveer Singh 4-0-36-0.

Kings XI Punjab: 117 All Out (18.2 Overs). Akshar Patel 31, David Miller 22, Karanveer Singh 17*, Manan Vohra 16; Ashish Nehra 3-0-9-2, Mohit Sharma 3-0-14-2, Suresh Raina 2-0-10-2, Pawan Negi 4-0-28-2.

Chennai Super Kings won by 65 runs

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bravo steadied the innings in a 65-run partnership with Faf du Plessis who scored 46.

Awana ended with four wickets for 30 runs including the important wicket of MS Dhoni for a first-ball duck in the 17th over.

The match turned out to be a one-sided affair with Super Kings bowling arsenal stifling Punjab’s firepower.

Suresh Raina 31 and David Miller 22 were the leading scorers as Kings XI were bowled out for their second-lowest total.

They slipped from 24 for 4 to 34 for 6 in the eighth over and Miller was left to lead the tackle on a mammoth task of 149 needed off 75 balls.

Super Kings will meet Kolkata Knight Riders in the Champions League T20 finals on Saturday in Bangalore.

Agard's feat now 21st of 9 wickets in an innings in last 30 years of top BCA 3-day championship

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - In taking nine wickets in an innings for LIME against Sagicor Life UWI in the just concluded drawn Series 8 match, the feat of off-spinner Michael Agard 111 is now the 21st instance in the last three decades of the major BCA three-day championship.

The 24-year-old Agard joined the special list when he grabbed nine for 78 off 24 overs in a total 276 all out off 70.2 overs on the opening day at the 3Ws Oval in the Elite division (rebranded from Division 1 in 2012).

He picked up two for 79 off 23 overs in the second innings total of 205 for eight off 57 overs, to end with figures of 11 for 157.

LIME made 405 for nine declared off 95 overs.

Agard's accomplishment came during an emotional but telling last two weekends for relegation-worried LIME, who are languishing one from the bottom in the points table in the Elite division championship with two rounds of matches remaining.

There are a few reasons why LIME would have been lifted by Agard's success and their overall performance. On the eve of the match, their experienced wicket-keeper/batsman Cyprian Payne was shot several times in the wee hours of the morning while at a house in Bank Hall, St. Michael and remains hospitalised after being in a coma at one stage.

LIME's total is the only occasion that any team reached 400 in an innings for the season and their match points (ten) were the most they have picked up in a series.

The Wildey-based men are also in danger of not qualifying for the knockout stage of the Sagicor General Super Cup Championship, which they hold, but no doubt inspired by Agard's nine-wicket haul on September 20, they not only crushed UWI by 246 runs in Series 6 the very next day, again at the 3Ws Oval, but also became the first ever side to bowl them out for under 100 in the nine seasons UWI have been competing in the 50-over competition.

UWI fell for 85 in 25.2 overs as they chased 328 to win in 44 overs.

Research by this correspondent on nine-wicket hauls in the last three decades has revealed that the best figures ever produced were by Kenrick Marshall, the tall, outstanding Police fast bowling all-rounder of the 1980s and 90s.

Marshall amazingly took all ten wickets for ten runs in the first innings against Schools North at St. James Secondary in 1993.

He had match figures of 16 for 38 (still the best in the period under review) picking up six for 28 in the second innings as Police triumphed by 82 runs in the 10th series match.

Left-arm spinner Winston Reid, arguably the greatest ever Division 1 bowler, has the most nine-wicket hauls (three), while two leg-spinners - Sherlon Greaves, the former Empire all-rounder and now coach of the Bank Hall team, and Spartan's Dave Marshall, co-incidentally now the coach of the Queen's Park team as well - have achieved the feat twice.

Reid, who boasts of an all-time record of 1 568 Division 1 (Elite) wickets for YMPC and Banks, recorded his nine-wicket hauls in 1986, 1992 and 2005.

In 1986, he took nine for 70 for YMPC against Wanderers at Beckles Road and claimed he was denied all ten because of a declaration by Wanderers captain Stephen Farmer, who was then unbeaten on 60.

Six years later, Reid grabbed nine for 33 for YMPC against Schools North at Beckles Road and in 2005, he picked up nine for 52 for Banks against Maple at Trents.

Greaves took nine for 134 against Banks at Bank Hall in 1986 and nine for 40, again v Banks at The Brewery in 1993.

Dave Marshall took nine for 91 against Schools North at St. James Secondary in 1998, and nine for 45 against BDFSP at Paragon in 2007.

Among those in that ‘nine-wicket club’ are the current BCA president and great West Indies fast bowler Joel “Big Bird” Garner and surprisingly, Floyd Reifer, the UWI batting stalwart and player/coach, who is also a former West Indies captain.

Garner took nine for 20 for BET against Pickwick at Wildey in 1994, while Reifer picked up nine for 41 (the other batsman was run out) for Cable & Wireless BET against Combined Schools at Deighton Griffith, Kingsland, in 2002.

Cricketers back for clubs

Barbados Nation article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - September is usually the month when the local cricket fraternity welcomes home a number of members returning from spending a summer competing in the leagues in the United Kingdom.

This year has been no different and in the most recent series of matches, particularly in the Elite and First Divisions, some teams have been bolstered by the inclusion of some of these “professionals”.

CounterPoint Wanderers included two such players for their eighth series clash with long-standing archrivals ESAF Pickwick at the Foursquare Oval in St Philip.

While youthful batting all-rounder Rashon Primus, who represented Wanderers briefly last year, is back for a second season, former UWI fast bowler Kevin McClean has joined up for his first stint with the oldest club in the country.

CGI Maple also welcomed their hard-hitting left handed batsman and left arm spinner Jamar “Butter Beans” Griffith.

Griffith, who teamed up with Atherton Cricket Club for the third consecutive stint in the Bolton League enjoyed a productive season scoring over 950 runs and taking 60 wickets to help the club to the capture of the Pro40’s and second places in the League and Twenty20 competitions.

He registered one century, which was a match-winning innings, along with nine other knocks of fifty or more, seven of which were unbeaten.

While Griffith believes that being the “pro” in the team helps him to be more responsible and to mature as a player he was particularly pleased in his work with fellow Coleridge & Parry alumunus Primus, who enlisted with the club for the first time.

“I think that he [Primus] did a fantastic job and helping to bring him through gave me great satisfaction and was one of my main highlights of the season,” Griffith said.

Griffith has been named among the list of players invited by the senior selectors to prepare for the upcoming regional first-class and 50 over competitions and though his adopted club is expressing an interest in having the sturdily-built all-rounder return for a fourth year, Griffith is hoping to break into the national team.

“The club would like me to come back but at the end of the day I still want to play cricket for Barbados so I would have to see how that works out.”

However, his immediate priority is to help Maple to win both the Elite Division and Sagicor General Super Cup championships.

Primus, on the other hand, enjoyed his first sojourn to the northern climes, an experience which he describes as “very different to playing at home.”

Being the pro among amateur teammates brings plenty responsibility and Primus believes that he has benefited positively.

“The other players are not on the same level and I had to really think about what I was doing because I am expected to win the matches with my performance. It has really helped me to mature and has improved my game. I am hoping to be able to transfer the experience into my performances for Wanderers.”

The 19-year-old former Barbados Under-17 player, who also has ambitions of playing at the highest regional and international levels, amassed 477 runs and took 39 wickets in the League, inclusive of seven 50s and two five-wicket hauls.

Bravo, Smith celebrate as CSK win CLT20

BANGALORE, India, CMC – There were no headlines for the West Indies duo of Dwayne Smith and Dwayne Bravo but their Chennai Super Kings still lifted the Champions League Twenty20 title with a convincing eight-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders here Saturday.

Set a challenging 181 for victory, Chennai were carried by a splendid unbeaten hundred from top order batsman Suresh Raina who stroked 109 off a mere 62 balls, to earning the Man-of-the-Series honour.

The left-hander produced a breath-taking exhibition of hitting, counting six fours an eight sixes as he powered his side home with nine deliveries remaining at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Smith, who has struggled in the series, looked in great touch early on when he hammered pacer Pat Cummins for two off-side boundaries in the opening over.

However, the right-hander did not survive the over, yorked for eight by a slower ball, off the fifth delivery.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary Scores:

Kolkata Knight Riders: 180/6 (20 Overs). Gautam Gambhir* 80, Robin Uthappa+ 39, Manish Pandey 32, Yusuf Pathan 20*; Pawan Negi 4-0-22-5, Ravindra Jadeja 4-0-25-1, Ravi Ashwin 3-0-26-0, Mohit Sharma 3-0-27-0.

Chennai Super Kings: 185/2 (18.3 Overs). Suresh Raina 109*, Brendon McCullum 39, Mahendra Singh Dhoni*+ 23*, Dwayne Smith 8; Yusuf Pathan 3.3-0-34-1, Pat Cummins 3-0-32-1, Suryakumar Yadav 3-0-21-0, Andre Russell 2-0-14-0.

Chennai Super Kings won by 8 wickets

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Smith’s dismissal would be KKR’s last sign of success for a while. Clearly missing their match-winning off-spinner Sunil Narine who was Thursday banned from bowling and left out of the final, KKR failed to make any inroads and Chennai capitalised.

Raina added 118 for the second wicket with opener Brendon McCullum who hit 39 from 30 balls before putting on a further 58 with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni whose unbeaten 23 came from 14 balls.

Earlier, Bravo sent down two expensive overs that cost 24 runs as KKR, sent in, rallied to 180 for six off their 20 overs.

Opener and captain Guatam Gambhir top-scored with 80 from 52 balls, posting 91 for the first wicket with Robin Uthappa who scored 39 from 32 deliveries.

Twenty one year-old eft-arm spinner Pawan Negi was the star, taking five for 22 to earn the Man-of-the-Match honour.

West Indies leg-spinner Samuel Badree is also a member of the Chennai Super Kings squad but was not selected for the final.

Hinds, Greaves hit tons to put Empire on verge of Elite division Championship success

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Christmas is still over two months away but ICBL Empire found ample time to toy with teenagers as they prepared to celebrate the capture of the 2014 BCA Elite division Championship as early as next weekend to mark the club's 100th anniversary in a big way.

In unquestionably one of the most memorable top league domestic performances in the last three-and-half decades, which has resulted in a record six straight wins from the start, Empire set the stage for a seventh victory in eight matches with yet another fine batting display on Saturday.

After losing the toss against rock-bottom Guardian General Barbados Youth on home turf at Bank Hall and spurred by centuries from veteran Ryan Hinds and the talented, young all-rounder Justin Greaves, who featured in a double-century stand for the sixth wicket, Empire were the only team to score over 300, reaching 331 for seven off 75.2 overs at stumps.

It was the fifth time in 12 innings this season that Jamal Smith's side had amassed over 300 and as was the case in each instance, a declaration is certain.

Left-hander Hinds, a successful former Barbados captain, who also played for West Indies and is still keen to prove that at the age of 33 he should be in the Barbados squad for both the 2014-15 regional first-class and NAGICO Super50 Championships, slammed 120 - his 12th century at this level (rebranded Elite from Division 1 in 2012) since his debut in 1996 and first in three seasons.

The 20-year-old Greaves, a former West Indies Under-19 team fast bowling all-rounder, was unbeaten on an even century, which was his second in a somewhat strange and chequered local domestic career during which he has played only 11 top league matches since his first game for Barbados Youth in 2010.

Having picked up the maximum four batting points, Empire moved to 122 and only require two more points to start celebrating the first league title since 2004.

Title holders CGI Maple, the only other team going into the ninth and penultimate series (Series 2, originally slated for June 21, 28 & 29 was rescheduled due to a late decision to play the third and final Test between West Indies and India at Kensington Oval and is now slated for October 18, 25 & 26) with a mathematical but extremely remote chance of at least sharing the title, on 87 points, were forced to virtually surrender in every sense of the word.

Ironically, Maple were mashed by LIME, who are desperately fighting to avoid relegation.

Sent in at Wildey after wet conditions delayed the start of play by one-and-a-half hours, Maple were dismissed for 70 - their only total of under 100 on being bowled out this season.

Badly needing their first win of the season and furthermore full points, LIME, who went into this round one from the bottom of the table on 47 points, made a positive response by reaching 51 for one at the close and have so far gained four points.

LIME's display on Saturday would have suddenly left the likes of BDFSP, ESA Field Pickwick and CounterPoint Wanderers a bit jittery, as neither can afford to slip now and even more interestingly, are all intimately involved in the final round when LIME host Wanderers and BDFSP are to home to Pickwick.

Pickwick, who were on 54 points, dismissed Massy Stores Spartan for 175 at Foursquare Oval to earn four bowling points, while Wanderers, also on the same points as Pickwick prior to this series, picked up four bowling points, too, after BDFSP, who were on 57 points, fell for 192 at Paragon.

Brathwaite Construction/Republic Bank St. Catherine, the only other side in that 'dicy" zone prior to this series with 56 points, made significant progress by bowling former gurus Sagicor Life UWI out for 75 before reaching 125 for seven at the close, to guarantee themselves seven points at a stage when the weather can be fickle.

Apart from Hinds and Greaves, there was personal satisfaction for at least one other batsman today.

Empire's Roston Chase became the fifth batsman to record 500 runs for the season in a knock of 42, which carried his aggregate to 534 behind the Pickwick captain Kyle Hope (645), UWI opener Kyle Corbin (622) and Marlon Welcome Goodman of BDFSP (541), with Welcome-Goodman's club captain Antonio Greenidge on 506.

At Bank Hall:

Ryan Hinds and Justin Greaves showed Barbados Youth who are the masters and students.

When Empire were reduced to 137 for five off 40 overs at tea, Barbados Youth had every reason to feel relatively happy with their work in the two-and-a-half hour session.

But Hinds and Greaves then consolidated as they featured in a sixth-wicket stand of 204.

Left-hander Hinds reached his century in three hours off 138 balls with 12 threes and two fours, while Greaves got to his in 152 minutes off 140 deliveries, striking 14 threes and three fours.

Hinds eventually fell to off-spinner Nicholas Kirton, who also removed Jomel Warrican with the next ball, which climaxed play for the day.

Kirton took three for 61 off 14.2 overs and leg-spinner Javed Leacock, two for 52 off 13 overs.

One of Leacock's wickets was all-rounder Roston Chase, who made 42 to take his aggregate for the season to 534 - the fifth batsman to join the 500-run club.

At Bayfield:

UWI were undone by a combination of pace and spin.

After winning the toss, they stumbled to 32 for five against the new ball pair of pacer Ulric Batson and left-arm spinner Derick Bishop before Yannick Ottley and debutant Keron Cottoy added 21 for the sixth wicket.

They were eventually bowled out for 75 in 33 overs.

Ottley, a Trinidadian who went to the crease art No. 4, was the only double-figure contributor with 38.

Bishop took four for 39 off 14 overs to push his tally of wickets for the season to 37, while Batson picked up three for 13 and left-arm spinner Alston Bobb, two for ten.

St. Catherine then slipped to 21 for three before closing on 125 for seven off 42 overs.

Neil Browne scored 34 and wicket-keeper/batsman Tevyn Walcott was unbeaten on 21.

Leg-spinner Keron Cottoy, a Vincentian, took three for 50 and Dominican left-arm spinner Kavem Hodge, two for 50.

At Foursquare Oval:

Following a delayed start by one hour due to wet conditions, Spartan recovered from dire straits at 39 for five to rally to 175 all out in 58 overs following the luck of the toss by Pickwick.

Fast bowling all-rounder Andre Gill topscored with 46 sat No. 6, while Chaim Holder contributed a typically, aggressive 35 at No. 9 and Jabbar Niles, 23.

Seamer Zahir Motara, who took three of the early wickets, finished with three for eight off nine overs.

Off-spinner Romelle Small picked up two for 25 and leg-spinner Aaron Jones, playing his first match of the season following a stint in England organised by the BCA and the Lancashire Cricket Board, two for 46.

At Paragon:

Leg-spinner Nikolai Charles continued to enjoy himself of late with six for 51 off 20 overs - his third consecutive five-wicket haul - to help restrict BDFSP to 192 all out in 53.3 overs after they were sent in.

The home side slipped from 71 for one to 125 for six on either side of tea before Rico Wiggins and Ackeem Clinkett put in 60 for the seventh wicket.

But once Wiggins was leg before wicket by Charles for the topscore of 55, the innings quickly folded.

Opener Renaldo Brathwaite made 47 and Clinkett was unbeaten on 24.

Medium-pacer Roshon Primus supported Charles with two for 24.

Wanderers will resume on 27 for two.

At Wildey:

LIME's late surge to avoid relegation continues to be very encouraging.

Against the odds in the previous series, they picked up their most points in a match (ten) and became the only team to score 400 in an innings for the season (405-9 declared), off none other than the star-studded UWI.

Now they showed Maple it was not a fluke, sending the St. James team crashing to 70 all out n 27.3 overs after winning the toss.

Maple were 34 for eight at one stage.

There were three double-figure contributors in Khalid Springer (17) and Joel Michael Leacock and Ramon Greaves (14 each).

Pacer Javon Searles, in his first match of the season, grabbed four for 11 off nine overs, while off-spinners Michael Agard, Jr. and Ashley Nurse each took two for 11 and 23 respectively.

LIME closed on 51 for one with Randy Thomas unbeaten on 24 and Devon Phillips, 23.

Barbados Under-17s rewarded for success

Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - The Barbados Under-17 Cricket Team was recently honoured with a reception for their success in West Indies Cricket Board Under-17 Competition in Tobago.

The Guardian Group hosted the victorious team on Friday night at the Hilton Hotel at an evening dubbed ‘Celebrate Our Champions’. Nigel Adams, Executive Manager of the Barbados Branch, congratulated the players for their achievements and noted that their success was clearly because of years of nurturing and hard work.

“This team of dedicated young men has been together from the Under-13 level and has been nurtured by very skilled persons during their formative cricketing years up to this point. It must be highlighted that all of them would have begun to hone their skills at primary school under the care, firstly of their PE teachers. They would have also been nurtured by the dedicated and skilled coaches of the National Sports Council and ultimately of the Barbados Cricket Association,” said Adams.

He also added that all of them would have emerged from the Herman Griffith Primary Schools’ Cricket Competition, a tournament that has now been rebranded as the Guardian Group Herman Griffith Primary Schools’ Cricket Competition.

West Indies cricket legend, Sir Wesley Hall, was also on hand to offer valuable advice to the young players. Sir Wesley spoke about balancing academics and sports, and noted that it was much easier to do this in the modern era.

He regaled those gathered with tales from his formative years at the Combermere School and how he made the transition from club cricket to the West Indies Cricket Team.

Barbados emerged as champions with a total of 19.9 points.

It was the narrowest of margins as second placed Windward Islands ended the tournament with 19.5 points, while Jamaica was third with 18.6 points. Guyana finished fourth with 14.1 points, hosts Trinidad and Tobago was fifth with 12.1 points, while the Leeward Islands finished sixth with 7.9 points.

Consistent Corbin cracks century, LIME step up in Sagicor Super Cup

$

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Kyle Corbin sustained his fine form over the last four months by slamming his second ever century in the Sagicor General Super Cup Championship.

Corbin's commanding century in Series 8 on Sunday was the foundation for a big total by former champions Sagicor Life UWI, who rebounded savagely from a crushing loss to title holders LIME, with an equally ruthless demolition of Ince Transport MTW as the race for a couple remaining places in the knockout phase intensified.

After the humiliation of being bowled out for under 100 for the first time ever in the nine years they have been competing - they made 85 in 25.2 overs to lose by a massive 246 runs at the 3Ws Oval two weeks ago - UWI manhandled Division 1 side MTW, winning by 223 runs at the large Pine Basin ground in Zone 'A'.

Corbin, a 24-year-old opener, lashed 101 off 105 balls with eight fours in a total 265 for seven off 50 overs - the highest of Series 8 - after the home side had won the toss.

MTW were bundled out for 42 in only 18.4 overs against a quartet of spinners - all of whom are non-nationals and all with first-class experience.

Left-arm chinaman Kristopher Ramsaran of Trinidad & Tobago took three for two off three overs, his compatriot Yannick Ottley, also a left-armer, three for 16 off six overs, Dominican Kavem Hodge, yet another left-armer, three for 22 off nine overs and leg-spinner Keron Cottoy, a Vincentian, one for two off four balls.

Levi Cadogan was the only batsman to reach double-figures with 12 off 30 balls.

Corbin's other hundred in the 40-year history of the top local one-day tournament was seven years ago for Guardian General Barbados Youth when he made an unbeaten 109 against Police at Weymouth in the fourth series.

It has been a dream season for the stylish Corbin in both the Super Cup and Elite division three-day competitions since both started in June. In the Super Cup, he has 266 runs at an average of 53.20, and is the second highest run-getter in the Elite division Championship with 622 runs including two centuries, one of which is a double (ave: 51.83).

No wonder the Barbados selectors picked the former Combined Campuses & Colleges player in their initial Draft of ten players for the 2014-15 West Indies Professional Cricket League season, which starts mid November with the first-class four-day championship.

UWI's win was their fourth in six matches, carrying them to 16 points - the same as Premix & Precast Yorkshire - 12 points behind Brathwaite Construction/Republic Bank St. Catherine who remain the only team to have won all of its matches.

LIME stepped up their desperate bid for a place in the quarter-finals with a 110-run victory over Police to Wildey and have now jumped to fourth place on 12 points.

But while UWI and Yorkshire are favoured to join St. Catherine in the last eight, it is still a toss up for the other place in the Zone among LIME, record eight-time champions Massy Stores Spartan, Police and MTW.

Spartan's chances of advancing received a very big dent when they collapsed dramatically to lose by seven runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method to St. Catherine at Queen's Park. With ten points and only one match remaining against UWI at Queen's Park, Spartan must win and rely on the outcome of other matches to stand a mathematical chance of going forward (See Points and remaining matches at the bottom).

In a bottom-of-the-table clash at Blenheim 'A' which ended in roughly three-and-a-half hours, Digicel Carlton crushed Glassesco BCL by six wickets. The match ended at 12.33 p.m.

In Zone 'B', ESA Field Pickwick and last year's finalists CGI Maple both confirmed their quarter-final places with commanding wins as they moved to 22 points.

Pickwick defeated school side Caribbean Alliance Insurance/Akobah Gardens Foundation by 55 runs on the D/L method at Foursquare Oval, while Maple beat Wildey by 31 runs at Trents.

ICBL Empire are also expected to reach the knockout stage following a resounding nine-wicket win over BDFSP at Paragon, which took them to 18 points in third place.

CounterPoint Wanderers had a big setback in their quest for a berth in the quarter-finals after losing by 19 runs to Barbados Youth at the Lester Vaughan ground, Cane Garden.

ZONE A

At Queen's Park:

This was a horrible defeat for Spartan, leaving them with a very remote chance of reaching the quarter-finals.

Chasing 191 in 48 overs to win, Spartan were well on course to stop St. Catherine's winning streak when they reached 154 for two at the end of the 38th over with Marrodon Bend and Shamarh Brooks well entrenched in a century stand.

The equation, therefore, appeared simple - 37 more runs off 60 balls with eight wickets intact.

But Spartan slowed and were limited to 183 for seven.

Their sudden problems started in the first ball of the 39th over when Bend was stumped by Tevyn Walcott off veteran left-arm spinner Derick Bishop for 61, which was the topscore. Bend faced 106 balls and struck two fours and one six.

It ended a partnership of 106 in 35.4 overs.

Brooks followed off the last ball of the 40th over, leg before wicket by Bishop for 56, which came off 83 balls and contained three boundaries.

Andre Gill perished first ball, caught by Walcott off Bishop in the 41st over and left-hander Jameel Stuart and Jabbar Niles then both became bogged down, adding 16 in 5.5 overs before Stuart fell for 12 off 22 balls off the last delivery of the 46th over to the versatile left-armer Darnell Greenidge, who switched from pace to spin, leaving the score on 175 for six.

Two balls later and without addition, Niles' patience grew thin and he was stumped off left-arm spinner Alston Bobb for seven, which took 24 balls.

The task of scoring 16 runs off ten balls proved too much for the usually aggressive Chaim Holder and Omar Marshall and Spartan.

Bishop took three 31 off ten overs.

Earlier, St. Catherine were bowled out for 191 in 47.1 overs after winning the toss.

That total was beefed up by a ninth wicket partnership of 59 in 9.1 overs between Greenidge (19) and Bobb, who topscored with 38 off 57 balls including two boundaries.

New ball bowlers Gill and Omar Marshall, each took three for 31 and 33.

At Pine Basin:

Kyle Corbin laid the foundation for UWI's 265 for seven off 50 overs after they were sent, and soon lost Kevon Beckles without scoring in the fifth ball of the match.

But the in-form Corbin and left-hander Anthony Alleyne added 108 in 23 overs for the second wicket before Alleyne fell to leg-spinner Junior Holder for 25, which came off 64 balls.

Corbin and Kavem Hodge then put on 60 in 9.4 overs for the third wicket before Corbin was dismissed by Holder for 101, which came off 105 balls and included eight boundaries.

Holder also removed Hodge for 29 off 37 balls with the score 181 in the 36th over but UWI consolidated through oldstager Floyd Reifer and Yannick Ottley.

The pair blasted 69 in 7.5 overs for the fifth wicket before left-hander Reifer was dismissed by Raymond Kellman for 34, which took 28 balls and included three boundaries.

Ottley was unbeaten on 45 off 27 balls with two sixes and one four.

Holder, who used the new ball, took three for 50 off nine overs, while Kellman had two for 30 off three overs.

MTW were mesmerised by the quartet of spinners and tumbled to 42 all out in 18.4 overs - the second lowest total of this year's tournament after Foundation were bowled out for 20 by Maple at Trents in Series 4.

At Wildey:

LIME's lively fightback of late continued with another telling display, which resulted in a 110-run win over Police.

Paved by an opening partnership of 80 in 17.4 overs between Justin Brathwaite and Jason Hinds, LIME looked set for a big total when they passed 150 with only two wickets down by the 30th over.

But there was a middle and lower order collapse with the last seven wickets falling for 33 runs in 10.5 overs, and they were bowled out for 207 in 45 overs as left-arm spinner Tyson Small grabbed five wickets.

Left-hander Brathwaite scored 48 off 53 balls with three fours and one six, while Hinds made 34.

After Brathwaite and Hinds fell in the space of three overs, Nekoli Parris and captain Ashley Nurse added 59 in 10.2 overs for the third wicket.

Nurse, just back from India where he represented Barbados Tridents in the Champions League Twenty20, topscored with 50 off 43 balls including two sixes and one four.

Parris was third out for 34, which came off 44 deliveries.

Small, who was the fourth of seven bowlers used, took five for 31 off eight overs, while off-spinner Stefan Gooding picked up two for 22.

Police also collapsed after reaching 50 with two wickets down in the 13th over. The last eight wickets crashed for 46 runs in 21.5 overs and they were bowled out for 97 in 31.3 overs.

Opener Jamar Yearwood hit the topscore of 28 off 42 balls with two fours and two sixes.

Off-spinner Nurse completed a good all-round match by taking three for nine off 5.3 overs. Another off-spinner Daley Hurley, who shared the new ball with pacer Javon Searles, took three for 34 off ten overs and yet another 'finger' spinner, Michael Agard, Jr. two for 15 off seven overs.

At Blenheim 'A':

BCL were routed by left-arm spinners Dane Currency and Karan Bhola, who shared eight wickets to send them tumbling to 65 all out in 33 overs after the home side won the toss.

This was another case of wickets falling like ninepins, the last eight crashing for 23 runs in 18.4 overs.

Currency grabbed five for seven off 10 overs including five maidens after coming on as the fourth and penultimate bowler. Bhola, the last bowler, took three for 14 off nine overs.

Opener Antonio Miller (19) and Devon Goodman (10) were the only double-figure contributors.

Carlton knocked off the target in 17.1 overs with six wickets in hand. Simon Naitram made 18 and Renaldo Antonio D. Holder, a former Grantley Adams and St. John Cultural player, who carries the same first and last names as two other local club players, 17 not out.

ZONE B

At Foursquare Oval:

Pickwick sustained their solid showing with a 55-run win on the D/L method against Foundation.

With the luck of the toss, Pickwick made 192 for four off 41.

It was built around a second wicket stand of 90 in 19.2 overs between Craig St. Hill and captain Kyle Hope. St. Hill topscored with 51 off 92 balls including three boundaries - his second half-century of the tournament - while Hope made 36 off 48 deliveries, also with three fours.

Shai Hope, the younger brother of Kyle, scored 45 not out off 54 balls including two sixes and big-hitter Shane Jones, 24 not out off 18 deliveries with three fours.

Set a revised target of 194 in 41 overs to win, Foundation were bowled out for 139 in 39.3 overs.

Opener Micah Howard made 36, Carlos Maynard, 28, and Joshua Drakes 23.

Aaron Jones, a leg-spinning all-rounder, who was a member of the champion Foundation team in last year's Intermediate division competition, was the main destroyer of his old schoolmates, taking four for 39 off eight overs.

Jones recently returned home Lancashire in England, where he was playing as a beneficiary of the Lord Gavron Scholarship programme, along with his namesake and former schoolmate Jerome Jones, who is now representing Empire.

At Paragon:

Empire rolled over BDFSP by nine wickets after the match was reduced to a 47-over.

BDFSP, who lost the toss, were bowled out for 126 in 33.3 overs with Antonio Greenidge's 35 the topscore.

Leg-spinner Shad Simmons took four for 26 off 6.2 overs, off-spinner Roston Chase, three for 17 off eight overs and left-arm fast bowler Jerome Jones, two for 23 off seven overs.

Jones recently returned home from Lancashire in England where he was playing as a beneficiary of the Lord Gavron Scholarship programme, along with his namesake and former Foundation schoolmate Aaron Jones, who is now turning out for Pickwick.

Empire were then put on course for victory by an opening partnership of 125 in 17.1 overs between Jamal Smith and Alcindo Holder.

Holder blasted 84 off 63 balls with six fours and seven sixes, while Smith made 34 not out.

At Lester Vaughan, Cane Garden:

Barbados Youth beat Wanderers by 19 runs to record their first win.

Set up by an opening stand of 111 in 14.5 overs between Dario belle and Leniko Boucher, Barbados Youth scored 235 for nine off 50 overs after winning the toss.

Belle hit the topscore of 57 off 55 balls with eight fours and two sixes, while Boucher made 43 off 49 deliveries as he counted four boundaries and two sixes.

And after slipping to 150 for six in the 33rd over, Michael Rawlins and Javed Leacock rebuilt the innings with a partnership of 78 in 16 overs.

Rawlins scored 38 off 55 balls with three fours and Leacock was unbeaten on 30 off 53 deliveries, hitting two fours.

Wanderers were bowled out for 216 in 48.3 overs.

Jason Greene made 53 off 89 balls with three fours and one six at No. 5 and Nikolai Charles contributed 41 from 57 balls, hitting five fours.

Off-spinner Nicholas Kirton was the leading wicket-taker with three for 44.

At Trents:

Captain Renaldo "Baby" Parris led by example with a disciplined, unbeaten 81 in a Maple total of 182 for nine off 50 runs after they won the toss and were in some bother on 59 for five in the 26th over.

Parris faced 128 balls and struck 12 threes and five fours. He put on 74 in 16.2 overs for the sixth wicket with Jamar Griffith (22).

Brian King took three for 41 off ten overs.

Wildey were restricted to 151 for nine after tottering on 66 for six in the 31st over.

Mario Albert, a former Maple player, made 50 not out off 77 balls with three fours and one three. He put on 74 in 16.5 overs for the seventh wicket with Khary Pierre, who was run out for 39 off 55 deliveries.

NSC to honour Linton

Barbados Nation article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - The National Sports Council (NSC) will this year honour the late George Linton a big way.

Linton, once described as a dominant force on the local cricket landscape, was a former Barbados and West Indies youth player. He died August 14 at the age of 57.

At the launch for the Guardian Group Herman Griffith 2014 Primary Schools’ Cricket Competition yesterday morning at Hilton Barbados, NSC cricket coach Anthony Straker revealed that the council will host the inaugural George Linton Memorial cricket series at the end of the school’s tournament.

Straker explained that the top cricketers for the series will be selected from across the eight zones and divided into four teams which will represent the North, West, East and Central in two semi–finals.

“George was a good man. He would have played an integral role not only at the Sports Council but particularly in relation to the Herman Griffith cricket tournament. He committed much of his time on and off the field and so we at the council thought this would be a good way to honour his contribution and his memory,” Straker told NATION SPORTS after the press briefing.

This year a total 61 teams will compete in the annual competition. This represented an increase of six schools over the 2013 showing.

For the 16th consecutive Guardian Group have lent their support to the tournament with a sponsorship of almost $20 000.

Speaking after the presentation of a $15 000 sponsorship cheque, Executive Manager at Guardian General Insurance Limited, Nigel Adams pledged the company’s continued commitment to the championship.

He told NATION SPORTS that for Guardian, supporting the tournament was not about getting their name out to the public but rather it was an opportunity to contribute to the society.

Highlighting the fact that boys and men were specifically plagued by negative comments, Adams said this competition was the chance to help to shape the lives of boys into productive young men.

“We’ve also sponsored the youth team in the [Barbados Cricket Association] BCA competition for 31 years and that speaks for itself that we are very committed to supporting the development of our youth. We believe there is some nexus between cricket and sports in general, and developing wholesome young people so Guardian is committed to that.

Where children are playing sports but they are being taught life skills, which is so important in today’s world. Where they are being taught how to accept defeat and how to accept victory with grace and not let it swell heads,” Adams added.

The tournament officially gets under way today when 2013 champs Wesley Hall Juniors compete against the St Giles Primary at Dover in Christ Church.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Some of Barbados’ best cricketing young talent were given a ten point plan as to how to blend sports and academic to become a successful individual as well as a member of the West Indies team.

Those ten commandments of success were presented by West Indian fast bowling legend Reverend Sir Wesley Hall as he addressed the Barbados Under 17 cricket team who won the regional title in Tobago this year and who were given an appreciation Celebrating Our Champions by sponsors Guardian Group at the Hilton on Friday.

Speaking in his inimitable style interspersed with humour, Sir Wes told the gathering including the cricketers, their friends, parents, Jerry Blenman, chief executive officer, the National Sports Council; Mona Alleyne, assistant director of sport; Nigel Adams, executive manager of Guardian and former manager John Jones that belief in self was a critical ingredient to success in any area.

Outlining his personal experience of gaining a scholarship to Combermere to play cricket and study, Sir Wes indicated that from small he walked around with a bat defying the naysayers that he would attend Combermere and that he would play cricket for the West Indies.

“My parents could not afford to pay for me to attend Combermere but thanks to my training at St Giles I was able to pass the scholarship exams to go on to Combermere where I started as a wicketkeeper/batsman and then became a fast bowler to make the West Indies team.

“I played for the West Indies, I coached them, I managed them, I selected them and I was the first member of the proletariat to become president of the West Indies Cricket Board,” stated the former Minister of Tourism.

Sir Wes pointed to greats like Sir Frank Worrell and Sir Garfield Sobers who started in the West Indies team batting as low as 11 and nine to blossom into some of the greatest batsmen in the world.  “The feared Charlie Griffith started as a spinner and the great Malcolm Marshall began as a leg break bowler at Parkinson,” said Sir Wes.

The former WICB president of the WICB then outlined the ten points:

1. Let God be the centre of everything which you do.

2. Cricket is a mind game.

3. Practice makes perfect but you have to practise the right things.

4. Be a winner, but remember the effort to win is just as important as the goal of winning.

5. Be creative and adapt to the changes in the world.

6. Communicate effectively.

7. Know your history as history is the memory of a nation.

8. Knowledge and skill are meaningless without desire.

9. Develop a winning determination; and,

10. Do all nine of those things and you will play for the West Indies.

Adams pointed to his company’s proud association with youth cricket in Barbados with a support of the primary school competition spanning 16 years and the youth team in the Barbados Cricket Association’s matches spanning 31 years.

“For us, as a corporate sponsor, cricket has always been seen as a powerful social interface with the communities we serve in Barbados, if only because of the role the game occupies in the psyche and the history of our people.

“In the specific context of youth cricket, it also affords us the opportunity to expose our young people to the values of team work, fair play, cooperation and how to deal with both success and defeat. By providing them with the right environment and examples, we hope to encourage them to aspire to be good leaders,” Adams said.
