Lambert disappointed with tame draw

Jamaica Gleaner article.

Kingston, Jamaica - Jamaica Franchise and dethroned champions Barbados Pride yesterday played a dull draw in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League four-day match at Sabina Park, thanks to some defensive batting from the latter.

Resuming their second innings on 168 for two - a lead of 250 - Barbados batted out virtually the rest of the day to end on 303 for nine, an addition of 156 runs and an overall lead 385.

This was in addition to their first-innings score of 310, to which Jamaica replied with 228.

Both teams agreed to call off play at approximately 4 p.m., one hour before the scheduled close.

"I'm disappointed the way the game turned out, but we had virtually no control over it," said Jamaica captain, Tamar Lambert. "They could have pushed the game more from yesterday (Sunday).

"If I was in their position, I would have put the opposition under a lot more pressure. But having said that, I think we gave up the initiative in the first innings where, after getting the better part of what was a flat wicket, we fell short of their score by 80-odd runs."

The Barbadians were led in their batting by captain Kraigg Brathwaite who, resuming on 78 overnight, went on to score 90. He batted for seven hours and 28 minutes and faced 171 balls, counting seven fours in the process.

Fast bowler Jason Dawes, the most impressive pacer throughout the match, ended with three for 44 for a match haul of seven for 101, while Lambert, bowling his nagging part-time off-spin from around the wicket, claimed three for 61 off 40 overs.

Veteran Edwards gets Hampshire deal

Cricinfo article.

Hampshire, England - Hampshire have sought to pep up their attack after promotion to Division One of the LV= County Championship by signing West Indies fast bowler Fidel Edwards for the second part of the 2015 season.

Edwards, 33, will be available in all formats and joins Hampshire as a Kolpak player, therefore not being classed as an overseas player.

Edwards has not represented West Indies since he faced Bangladesh in Khulna in November 2012 when he took six wickets in the first innings to help West Indies win the series.

The right-arm fast bowler will arrive at the Ageas Bowl in time for Hampshire's opening Royal London One-Day Cup match against the Sussex Sharks on July 27.

Edwards said: "I'm delighted to have signed for such an ambitious club as Hampshire. I'm very much looking forward to my first taste of county cricket. It's also an honour to follow other Bajans like Malcolm Marshall and Gordon Greenidge to Hampshire."

Edwards is hugely experienced in all formats with 55 Test Matches and 50 ODIs for the West Indies. In arguably one of his finest individual performances in international cricket, the seamer finished with impressive figures of 6-92 in a Test Match against England at Lord's in May 2009.

That he can still produce spells of explosive pace was emphasised when he destroyed Nottinghamshire to finish with figures of 8 for 40 during a two-day friendly for the Combined Campuses and Colleges in March this year. Notts collapsed from 60 without loss to 99 for 9 in the process.

Hampshire's director of cricket Giles White said: "Fidel is a good option for us. He arrives ahead of the Royal London One Day Cup and should give our attack variety which we feel is key in the 50-over format. His stay will also extend to Championship cricket and he will be available until the end of the season."

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - The Golden Oldies World Cricket Festival, an international tournament for semi-professional and retired players, will be held in the Caribbean in 2017.

Barbados has won the rights to host the festival which will run from May 6 to 13 in Bridgetown.

Cricket legends, Sir Garfield Sobers and Joel Garner, have joined a delegation to promote the tournament in Cape Town, South Africa at this year’s edition of the festival.

“What is particularly interesting about having the 2017 Golden Oldies Cricket Festival is that it takes place during the month of May, which allows us to increase arrivals during a traditionally slower month,” said Alvin Jemmott, chairman of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI).

“No less than five hotels are expected to benefit from this event. In addition, our support services – restaurants, attractions, car rentals, nightlife facilities, etc. – are expected to gain additional business as the games are structured as a festival allowing participants to adequately enjoy the host country”.

About 600 visitors are expected in Barbados for the festival, a brainchild of cricket enthusiast Peter McDermott.

The Golden Oldies Festival, which has been held in destinations such as Adelaide, Birmingham, Brisbane, Auckland and Sydney is not limited to cricket but also has editions catering to those who play rugby, golf, hockey and netball.

NORTH SOUND, Antigua - Kraigg Brathwaite, the West Indies opener, says he is quietly confident of doing well against England as the home team started their preparations for the upcoming three-Test Series.

The 22-year-old was speaking as the Windies started their preparations at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground on Monday.

The Barbados batsman has been in terrific form scoring three centuries in the recently concluded inaugural WICB Professional Cricket League (PCL) and a hard fought century against South Africa in the second Test at Port Elizabeth last year.

“I am obviously looking forward to this home series against England. England is a tough opposition so you know you got to work hard,” said Brathwaite, who scored three test centuries last year.

“And in terms of my form I am coming from first class cricket feeling quite confident and just keep believing in myself and carry that into this series”.

Brathwaite’s recent centuries include 102 and 112 against Guyana Jaguars and 106 against South Africa last year.

The West Indies continued their preparation with a full training session at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground on Tuesday morning under the supervision of new head coach Phil Simmons, the former West Indies allrounder.

“I think we had a good practice sessions. All the guys enjoyed it,” he said.

“The new coach seems pretty cool and relax and I enjoyed the first day working with him. I thought it was a good day for the team.”

The last time West Indies and England played a test series in the Caribbean, the regional side emerged victorious one-nil.

“It would be phenomenal (winning the series),” said Brathwaite.

“Obviously the team is a little bit young but we have some good experienced guys and coming out on top would mean a lot for the region and I believe the guys can do it”.
