President promises better pitches

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Re-elected president of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Dave Cameron says the West Indies' upcoming Test series against England and Australia in the Caribbean will be played on better pitches.

The matches, to be played in Antigua, Grenada, Barbados, Dominica and Jamaica, will bowl off in less than a month, starting with the Windies a three-match series against England.

"We (WICB) are promising are better-looking pitches for the next five games," said Cameron.

"Our regional curator, Ken Crafton, has been visiting some venues and pitches, which has been a point of constant discussion around the region.

"He has gone to at least seven venues, and since then, we have been focusing on the five venues that will be hosting Test matches this year."

The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua is scheduled to stage the first England Test from April 13, the Grenada National Stadium, the second from April 21, while the third start May one at Barbados’ Kensington Oval.

The two-game Australian series, in the meantime, is set to get underway on June 5 at Windsor Park in Dominica before closing out on June 13 at Sabina Park in Kingston.

Crafton, an internationally renowned pitch and field consultant, has been credited for the improvements in pitch conditions during the staging of last year's second edition of the Caribbean Premier League Twenty20.

WICB PCL Regional 4-Day Rd 10 bulletin

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – There are still reasons for all of the teams in the WICB Professional Cricket League Regional 4-Day Tournament to approach the 10th and final round of matches, starting on Friday, with a high level of vigour.

The Tournament was concluded as a genuine contest last weekend, when Guyana Jaguars drew with Trinidad & Tobago Red Force on home soil, earning seven points which put them an unassailable 22 points clear of nearest rivals Barbados Pride and handing them the Headley/Weekes Trophy of regional supremacy.

Still, all sixteams will have a point to prove in the final round to bring the curtain down on the first season of the PCL under the new franchise format.

In Roseau, Dominica: Jaguars, the newly-minted R4Day champions, will be looking to give firm proof that they were the season’s best side against Windward Islands Volcanoes at Windsor Park.

The Volcanoes were one of the other two sides that had an outside hope of grabbing the title from the Jags before their draw with the Pride in Bridgetown put them both out of contention and will want to crash the visitors’ coronation party.

The Jaguars landed their first victory in 12 years over the Volcanoes when the two sides met in the second round of this season at the Guyana National Stadium – and they will now also eye their first win in the Windwards since 2002.

Prior to that second round defeat, the Volcanoes had won five of the previous seven matches against the Jags and have won the last two times the sides have played at this venue.

Injury has forced the Volcanoes to bring uncapped batsman Jerlonie Robinson into their squad for Miles Bascombe, but the visitors travelled with an unchanged unit.

In Couva, Trinidad: Red Force, a side that promised much prior to the season, and Leeward Islands Hurricanes, a side aiming to end a forgettable season strongly, will meet at the National Cricket Centre.

The Reds gave a redeeming performance against the Jaguars to earn a draw, and the Hurricanes blew away the Jamaica Franchise to post their first win of this season and end a string of nine straight defeats in the R4Day stretching back to last season.

Both will be looking to sow some seeds of confidence that can drive them during the off-season and give them hope for bigger, brighter and better performances next season.

The home team will be highly favoured, considering they have won six of their last seven matches against the Hurricanes, including a six-wicket victory in the second round this season at Warner Park in St. Kitts.

Injury too, has prompted the Red Force to make two changes with Akeal Hosein and fellow left-arm spinner Ricky Jaipaul replacing Yannic Cariah and Derone Davis – but the Hurricanes are unchanged.

In Kingston, Jamaica: The historic Sabina Park will be the backdrop, when the Jamaica Franchise face long-time rivals Barbados Pride.

The Franchisers, the most decorated side in the R4Day in the last decade, will hope that the green grass of home will bring them inspiration and they can come away with at least a draw to avoid slumping to their sixth straight defeat of the season.

This may prove a bit of a challenge against the Pride, who will want to continue on their trajectory of success to finish the season in second place behind the Jaguars.

The match between the two sides earlier this season was badly affected by the weather, but recent history gives the hosts the edge – the visitors’ victory last season was their first in Jamaica for close to a decade.

The Franchisers have brought in Jon-Ross Campbell and former West Indies Under-19 captain Ramaal Lewis to replace Shacaya Thomas and veteran leg-spinner Odean Brown, and the Pride have similarly made two changes with all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite and opener Omar Phillips recovered from injury lay-offs to replace the now injured duo of Tino Best and Kyle Corbin.

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The West Indies Cricket Board announced today the appointment of Phil Simmons to the role of West Indies Head Coach on a three-year contract.

The 51-year-old Simmons was one of seven people interviewed for the post and following his eight years of unparallelled success with ICC Associate team Ireland, who he led to two 50-overs and four Twenty20 World Cups, as well as the Associates treble in 2013, he was the outstanding candidate.

“We are thrilled with the appointment of Phil and we believe he is the right individual for our team and our region at this time, so we want to welcome him back home,” said WICB Chief Executive Officer Michael Muirhead.

“Phil has a proven ability to develop players, while cultivating great team spirit and a winning culture. We have a number of young, talented players about whom he is excited to be coaching and we believe he is the right fit.”

Muirhead added: “Phil has impressed us with his understanding of the current realities of West Indies cricket and his ability to articulate practical examples and strategies of things that could be implemented within the team to improve performance.

“His independence of character and his resolve to stand up for what he believes in were also strong qualities that convinced us that Phil was best suited to usher the West Indies team into a new era of success.”

Simmons, who played 26 Tests and 143 One-day Internationals for West Indies between 1987 and 1999, acknowledged it was difficult to leave Ireland, but coaching the West Indies team was too good an opportunity to let pass.

“West Indies have a tremendous history and prestige in the game, and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to be Head Coach,” he said.

“There is an abundance of young talent coming through the ranks and to be able to assist with the development of the future playing talent in the West Indies is fantastic. I can’t wait to begin and I am looking forward to starting work with the players.”

He said: “I am excited to be beginning this new chapter in my coaching career and to have the opportunity to create a winning culture.

“West Indies have a huge following across the World and I have great admiration for the passion fans show for our team. We are determined to give the supporters the brand of cricket and the level of success that we are all looking to achieve.”

Simmons’ first task will be to oversee the West Indies team for the International Home Test Series against England next month.

Holder has the skills to lead, says NZ fast bowling legend

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – Fast bowling great Sir Richard Hadlee has given Jason Holder a ringing endorsement, saying he is impressed with the cricketing skills and leadership of the young West Indies captain.

The former New Zealand fast bowler was speaking to a packed media conference at the Basin Reserve on Thursday afternoon.

Together with West Indies bowling great, Sir Curtly Ambrose, he was previewing the all-important World Cup quarter-final between the New Zealanders and the Windies scheduled for the Wellington Regional Stadium on Saturday.

“I like the look of the captain Jason Holder he seems very calm for someone so young and someone carrying so much responsibility,” said Sir Richard.

“He has formed a good new ball partnership with Jerome Taylor and I also like the look of him as well. They give the West Indies attack something to work with at the top.”

He added: “It is good when you have someone (Holder) so young who can take the team forward. He is handling himself quite well.”

Sir Curtly also lauded the work of Holder and Taylor with the new ball, and backed the Windies to turn the tables on the unbeaten Black Caps on Saturday.

“The combination of Taylor and Holder is working pretty well for us at the moment,” said Sir Curtly, the Windies bowling coach.

“We all know how talented captain Holder is. Taylor is a wonderful bowler, swings the ball as well and they’re going to be key, I believe, to start the innings.”

Taylor has taken 14 wickets at the World Cup at 18.35 apiece to be the West Indies leading bowler.

He was out of the game for several years but made a successful comeback last year. He has an impressive ODI record with 120 wickets in 78 matches at an average of 27 runs per wicket, an economy rate of under five runs per over and a strike rate of 32.

Holder, meanwhile, was a surprise choice when he was named to take over from Dwayne Bravo as the 50-overs captain.

The decision to turn to the 23-year-old was taken last December ahead of the One-Day International series in South Africa and Clive Lloyd, chairman of selectors, tipped Holder “as a young man with a good cricket brain”.

So far in the world Cup Holder has impressed with his calm authority as well as his classy batting and wicket-taking ability with the new ball. He made 56 against South Africa and top scored against India with a career-best 57.

In last Sunday’s must-win game against the United Arab Emirates he took four wickets to earn the Man of the Match award, as West Indies clinched a quarter-final spot.

Brooks century steadies Pride on Day 1

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Shamarh Brooks stroked his second consecutive hundred but Barbados Pride lost a clatter of wickets in the final hour, to throw away some of their control against Jamaica Franchise, on the opening day of their final round match in the WICB PCL here Friday.

The right-hander hit exactly 100 as Barbados, opting for first knock at Sabina Park, closed the day on 286 for eight.

Brooks was supported by Shai Hope who got 59, opener Omar Phillips who hit 34 and wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich who chipped in with 33.

Barbados cruised to 251 for four at one stage during the final session but then lost four quick wickets for 35 runs.

Former Young West Indies pacer Marquino Mindley was the main destroyer, taking four for 36 while his new ball partner Jason Dawes finished with two for 45.

Barbados were off to a horrible start when they lost captain and main run-getter Kraigg Brathwaite, caught at the wicket off the final ball of the opening over bowled by Mindley.

Hope and Phillips combined to repair the damage with a second wicket partnership of 92, which took Barbados to lunch at 66 for one.

The right-handed Hope, who hit a double century against Windward Islands Volcanoes in the last round, struck five fours off 149 balls in just under 3-1/2 hours at the crease.

Phillips, meanwhile, hit four fours off 136 balls in 159 minutes, before falling to Mindley, and Hope and Brooks added a further 36 before Hope was sent on his way, lbw to Mindley.

The 26-year-old Brooks then anchored two key partnerships to put Barbados in control. He put on 40 with Roston Chase who scored 13 and then added 83 for the fifth with Dowrich.

Brooks, in only his second match of the season, faced 162 deliveries in 197 minutes and counted nine fours and a six. The knock was his second first class hundred.

However, Brooks and Dowrich were among the late wickets to fall, with Dowrich stumped off off-spinner Ramaal Lewis and Brooks taken behind off Mindley with the second new ball.

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Tickets for the International Home Test Series between West Indies and England will begin on Monday, March 23, in Antigua and the following Monday, March 30, in Grenada and Barbados.

The West Indies Cricket Board announced the ticket prices today and Chief Executive Officer Michael Muirhead encouraged fans in the Caribbean to visit ticket booths early.

“We’ve made sure the prices are affordable, so we expect high demand for tickets,” said Muirhead.

“All tickets are being sold in real-time on a first-come, first-served basis and will remain on sale until all are sold, so we want Caribbean fans to purchase their tickets now and can get the seats that they want.

"This is a very important series for our side and we want Caribbean fans to give them a high level of support, as well as help create the unique atmosphere at the games as only we can."

Muirhead said there will be no online selling, so fans hoping to catch the action should hurry to the sales booths in the host territories to purchase their tickets.

Ticket prices start as low as US $3 for children and US $6 for adults. A child price is available to anyone under the age of 12 as at June 1 this year. Adults 65 and over are free while stocks last.

All other WICB ticket policies remain in place for the sale of tickets.

NOTES:

1. Season Ticket prices remain for the first four days of the Test

2. Children 12 and under are 50 per cent discount of the prices listed above locally

3. Adults 65 and over are free while stocks last.

WICB responds to ticket price complaints

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The West Indies Cricket Board has been made aware that concerns have been expressed about advance ticket-pricing for our upcoming International Home Series between West Indies and England through our Official Tour Operator (OTO) programme.

The WICB has appointed seven official United Kingdom tour operators for the England tour of the Caribbean which starts in April, offering a number of travel packages which include the right to pre-sell tickets only for the series, since there will be no online ticket sales.

“We value the fact that English cricket tours to the Caribbean always attract thousands of West Indian and English fans resident in the UK and elsewhere,” said Chief Executive Officer of the WICB, Michael Muirhead.

“Please be assured that the WICB will never knowingly take any steps which can jeopardise this long-standing relationship between cricket fans and West Indies Cricket.”

Muirhead said a number of factors however, had influenced the pricing of tickets through the OTO programme.

He said: “First, the tickets being offered to you through the OTO programme are premium seats with some of the best views of play in all three match venues. There is also the opportunity to have groups seated together depending on availability. The number of available seats is usually quite limited because of our relatively small stadium sizes.

“Secondly, pre-selling online is not available other than through the OTO programme. Making it possible for overseas fans to acquire tickets will help to prevent the frustration of long queues on match days at the match venues.”

Muirhead added: “Thirdly, the Government Authorities in all three host territories have partnered with the WICB and have invested precious public funds which help to cover the economic cost differential of the tickets which will be sold locally to citizens.

“This is why we can offer slightly more attractive prices for local consumption only. This policy has traditionally been responsible for creating the uniquely festive atmosphere inside the stadium grounds for which the Caribbean has become renowned.”

Muirhead noted offering tickets at a differential price through the OTO programme is a common industry practice and has been done in major sports and entertainment events around the World, including previous England tours to the Caribbean and other cricket destinations.

“In this regard, we have licensed International Cricket Tours, Howzat Travel, Sports Tours Plus, Thomas Cook Tour Operators, Gullivers/Barmy Army, Independent Travel Experts (part of the Travel Network Group) and Living with the Lions Sports Travel as our exclusive commercial travel providers,” he said.

“We are confident that this group of experienced tour companies can coordinate all travel and ticketing arrangements, while ensuring that visitors will carry wonderful memories home. WICB extends a warm invitation to all cricket supporters, including our friends in the UK, to come to the Caribbean and enjoy the exciting cricket culture and atmosphere which only our islands can provide.”

Brooks happy to make use of his chance

Jamaica Gleaner article.

Kingston, Jamaica - Jamaica Franchise bowlers were made to work hard yesterday on the opening day of their WICB Professional League four-day final round clash against Barbados Pride at Sabina Park yesterday.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Barbados closed the day on 286 for eight.

Former West Indies Under-19 captain, Sharmarh Brooks, led the way for the visitors with a boundary-filled even 100. The free-scoring Brooks hit nine fours and a six in three hours and 17 minutes at the crease.

It was the second ton for the 26-year-old, who has had a chequered first-class career since making his debut as an 18-year-old in 2007.

His maiden century came last week against the Windward Islands Volcanoes in Barbados in what was his first four-day fixture in two seasons.

"My innings was a lot quicker than I would normally do at this level," said Brooks, who after averaging in the low 20s after regional 20 matches went overseas to play professional cricket.

"The wicket was a good one to bat on, things were just flowing, and I got a chance early on when I was on one.

"But I always believe that when you get a chance you should make full use of your chances, and that's what I did."

Silky-smooth stroke maker, 21-year-old Shai Hope scored 59 while opener Omar Phillips made 33.

Twenty-year-old fast bowler, Marquino Mindley has so far claimed four for 36 with his new ball partner Jason Dawes supporting with two for 45.

"I thought Sharmarh batted well, but having said that, I don't believe we fielded as well as we could have," said Jamaica coach, Junior Bennett.

"But to come back and get those few wickets in the latter part kind of balanced things."

Holder: Need to respond better at death

$

Cricinfo article.

Wellington, New Zealand - Jason Holder has arguably had the toughest gig in this World Cup. He's only 23 and was given the West Indies ODI captaincy suddenly at the start of the year, with little time to shape a squad without Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and Sunil Narine to his style of leadership.

He then lost Darren Bravo to injury and had to cope with the uncertainty surrounding Chris Gayle's fitness. And then there was the issue of performance, with West Indies losing heavily to Ireland, South Africa and India in the group stage, before another comprehensive defeat to New Zealand in the quarter-final ended his campaign.

"Me personally, I've taken a lot you know, been through a lot, there's been a lot of criticism, left right and centre, all over the place," Holder said, when asked what he will take away from the World Cup. "I'm proud of the way I stood up. I'm not one to shy away from responsibility or dip my head when things get tough. I expected a tough job when I accepted the captaincy.

"No doubt it's been a tough time but we've had some very good times and I've learned a lot in how to manage our players, just trying to get the best out of our players, you know. It's been a challenge yes, but one I truly enjoyed."

Holder put the immediate cause of West Indies' exit - Martin Guptill making 237, New Zealand racking up 393 - down to missed opportunities in the field and poor lengths from the bowlers. Guptill was dropped by Marlon Samuels on 4, and he went on to spearhead a surge that cost West Indies 206 runs in the last 15 overs.

"It was obviously a good innings, he really took the game away from us," Holder said. "What was good about his innings was he batted straight through. Having said that we put him down early and we had a few half-chances that we probably could have taken. I think we just need to respond well when bowling at the death. We didn't land our yorkers and we paid for it today.

"We were inconsistent when we bowled. With our lengths upfront, thought we were a bit too full, and at the back end we didn't land our yorkers. That's just it. I don't think we need to over-analyse things at this point of time.

"If we were too short the ball just sat up … but in terms of the right length on the pitch, it had to be that in-between length and also vary your pace because it was a good pitch, in my opinion."

When asked about the larger picture - Holder began his captaincy tenure with a 4-1 defeat in South Africa - he put West Indies' troubles down to inconsistency. "We've had some good games, we've had some bad games, but we've never been consistent. Going forward we need to be a lot more consistent that we are at the moment."

The road ahead for West Indies doesn't contain one-day internationals until the end of the year, when they play Sri Lanka, so Holder will have time to take a break from the captaincy - Denesh Ramdin is in charge of the side for Tests - as West Indies regroup under a new coach Phil Simmons.

He said the team had been on the road for a long time and could do with some much-needed rest and recuperation before the home Tests against England.

"The guys have put their bodies on the line for the last four months. We've been away from our families for four months," he said. "I think the first thing to do is just refresh a bit at home. We just have a few days at home before the training camp for the England series. I think that break will be well deserved. It will do well for a lot of the guys. Just need to refresh, come back strong against England. We don't have ODI cricket until the end of the year against Sri Lanka so we have time to make some changes, or try to fix problems that we have."

It is unlikely that Holder will face as difficult a challenge in the near future as the one he has just endured. He hasn't always been in control on the field, but he comes across as a calm and measured individual - a bowler with obvious batting talent - and West Indies will hope that he is stronger for the experience.
