Jamaica into final with narrow victory

Bridgetown, Barbados, CMC – Jamaica withstood an inspired spell from medium pacer Kevin Stoute to clinch a one-wicket victory over Barbados on Tuesday and advance to the Final of the Regional Four-Day Tournament.

Stoute captured 5-29 from 16 overs and left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn ended with 3-78 from 26 overs, as the Jamaicans successfully chased 167 for victory on the final day of the semi-final at Kensington Oval.

Jermaine Blackwood hit four boundaries in the top score of 64 from 98 balls in two hours and Andre McCarthy made 43, but no other batsman reached 20, as the visitors almost blew their chance to win.

Nikita Miller formalised the result about 15 minutes past the scheduled lunch interval, when he steered a delivery from Benn into square cover for a single to allow Jamaica to breathe a huge sigh of relief – but left the home team, the newly-crowned regional champions – crestfallen.

The Jamaicans will now make the short hop to St. Lucia, where they will face Windward Islands in the Final, starting on Saturday at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.

Jamaica started the day needing 61 more runs to win with eight wickets standing – but their approach was in stark contrast to the previous evening when they played aggressively to reach 106 for two.

Andre McCarthy, whose positive stroke-play helped to put the Jamaicans within sight of victory on Monday, was caught at extra cover off Benn from a leading edge, seven runs short of his half century.

He struck four boundaries from 43 balls in just over an hour and put on 91 with Blackwood for the third wicket.

It was at this stage that Stoute made his intervention into the match, bowling unchanged from the start until the finish to send shivers down the spine of Jamaica.

He had Blackwood caught behind off Stoute in his fourth over before Carlton Baugh Jr was run out for the second time in the match for one, attempting a single.

Stoute then had Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert, a century-maker in the first innings, caught at slip for 10 in his ninth over, Sheldon Cottrell, strangely promoted to eight, bowled for six in his following over and Damion Jacobs caught at gully for a duck two balls later, leaving Jamaica 139 for eight.

Jerome Taylor hit a four and a six in 12 to ease the tension, but he was caught at slip off Stoute for a duck with 12 required for victory.

Stoute and Benn bowled steadily to make the last wicket pair of Miller and Dave Bernard Jr work for the remaining runs – but the Jamaican pair inched them over the finish line.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - West Indies opening batsman Dwayne Smith top scored with a belligerent half century that set the stage for Chennai Super Kings to register a narrow seven run win over Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier league (IPL) here on Wednesday.

Smith roared to an even 50 from 28 balls, the major contributor to Chennai’s 140 for six in 20 overs before bowling out Royals for 133 in 19.5 overs at Dubai International cricket stadium.

Smith smashed six fours and three sixes and shared an opening stand of 35 with Brendon McCullum but when he departed no one down the order managed to get any momentum.

Smith was in a no nonsense mood hitting the very first delivery of the game for four through the covers.

The Barbadian batsman was particularly severe in punishing Australian James Faulkner, hitting him for four consecutive fours in the 6th over.

Smith was caught after splicing a slower, back of a length ball down the throat of mid-off.

Ravindra Jadeja’s all-round show – 36 not out and four for 33 – also helped the Chennai Super Kings to victory.

Brief scores:Chennai Super Kings 140 for 6 in 20 overs (Dwayne Smith 50, Ravindra Jadeja 36*; Rajat Bhatia 2 for 13) beat Rajasthan Royals 133 in 19.5 overs (Dhawal Kulkarni 28, Rajat Bhatia 23; Ravindra Jadeja 4 for 33) by 7 runs.

Ormskirk's overseas player Dane Currency looking to cash in

Liverpool Echo article.

Lancashire, England - Ormskirk Cricket Club has looked to the Caribbean in their quest to topple arch-rivals Northern and reclaim the Premier League title they last won in 2011.

West Indies cricketer Dane Currency flew in to Brook Lane last week from Barbados  with the club's latest overseas player pledging to fill the sizeable shoes of England tweaker Simon Kerrigan who is expected to be unavailable with Lancashire for the majority of the season.

As an orthodox left arm spin bowler, who also bats in the middle order, Currency has enjoyed cricketing success with his home West Indies club Carlton CC and in England with Rochdale CC of the Central Lancashire League and Staley CC of the Saddleworth and District League.

Because of a restriction in fielding overseas players in the Ray Digman Trophy Competition he was unavailable for the first competitive game of the season but will be making his debut against Fleetwood Hesketh CC when the Premier League Competition gets under way at Brook Lane tomorrow.

Ormskirk CC skipper Ian Robinson welcomes Barbadian Dane Currency to the club.

Reflecting on his arrival in West Lancashire, Currency, 28, said: “I could not have been made more welcome. Even the weather has been kind to me so far to match that warm welcome.

"I am really looking forward to playing with a talented group of players with superb facilities in a progressive and ambitious club.

"I have carefully followed Simon Kerrigan’s success in top class cricket and hope to follow in his footsteps as a top wicket taker for Ormskirk. The thoughts of lining up with fellow left arm spinner Martyn Farrell fills me with enthusiasm and expectation.”

Ian Robinson, the Ormskirk captain, said he recruited the Bajan spinner to add strength in depth to his squad of players.

He said: “Dane comes highly recommended and I am confident that his presence will greatly enhance the club’s push for honours this season.

"He settled in very quickly and joined a training session held just hours after arriving from a long flight, which is testament to his determination to acclimatise to English conditions and be ready for the first game of the season.”

Lambert - We deserved to win semi-final

Jamaica Observer article.

Kingston, Jamaica - Jamaica's cricket captain Tamar Lambert says his players deserve a place in the final, despite a calamitous batting collapse against Barbados in the Regional Four-day competition which nearly saw them missing out.

The Jamaicans, led by Lambert's sparkling first-innings century and an admirable team bowling effort, took control of the first three days of the semi-final encounter and entered the final day on a commanding 106-2 in search of 167 runs for victory.

However, a total of seven wickets fell for the addition of 61 runs as Jamaica scraped home by one wicket in a tense finale at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. Medium pacer Kevin Stoute was the main prick in the side of the Jamaicans with a five-wicket haul for the League champions Barbados.

All-rounder David Bernard and lower order batsman Nikita Miller, who batted at number 11 because he was not feeling well, carried Jamaica over the line with respective unbeaten knocks of 14 and three, in an invaluable last wicket stand of 12 runs.

"I think it was a very good game and we played the better cricket over the first three days. They fought back on the final day, but we deserved the win," Lambert told the Jamaica Observer.

He said a few nerves were jangled under Stoute's rampage, but insisted that he had confidence in Bernard and Miller on what he felt was still a decent batting pitch.

"Yes, I was a little nervous, but still felt we would have gotten there. They are two senior players so they were the two best (persons) you want at the crease in that position.

"The pitch was not really difficult to bat on. We just played some loose shots and they bowled in some good areas as well," the 33-year-old skipper added.

Jamaica will challenge for the Headley/Weekes Trophy against Windward Islands, who recorded a comfortable victory over Trinidad & Tobago in the other semi-final. The final begins tomorrow at the Beausejour Cricket Stadium in St Lucia.

The Headley/Weekes Trophy is named in honour of West Indies batting legends George Headley and Sir Everton Weekes.

Barbados, also the 2012-13 champions, already have the tag of this season's regional winners after topping the league standings with 82 points to take the President's Trophy. Trinidad & Tobago followed with 80 points, while the Windward Islands ended with 65.

Jamaica, who were badly beaten at home by Barbados during a three-game skid in the preliminary stage, ended fourth in the league standings with 59 points.

The Combined Campuses and Colleges finished fifth with 49 points, ahead of Leeward Islands (42) and last-placed Guyana (29).

Playing at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Mumbai chalked up 141 for seven off their 20 overs, after opting to bat first. Captain Rohit Sharma top scored with exactly 50 off 41 balls while New Zealander Corey Anderson struck 39 from 31 deliveries.

Pollard, however, managed just 12 from 11 balls he was bowled by seamer Mohit Sharma, dragging an attempted slog onto off stump from a slower delivery.

Pollard now has 21 runs from his three innings for Mumbai.

In reply, Smith helped get Chennai away to a flyer, slamming a cameo 29 off 22 balls, in posting 57 off 38 balls for the first wicket with Brendon McCullum, who finished 71 not out.

Jamaica Observer article.

Kingston, Jamaica - For the second year running, the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) will partner in the hosting of the annual player awards ceremony to acknowledge the top performing cricketers in the region for the year 2013.

There will be approximately 14 awards, to include the top male and female cricketers of the year, sectional prizes, and the WIPA and WICB will each offer a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, June 5, at the Jamaica Pegasus in Kingston.

WIPA President and CEO Wavell Hinds has said of the partnership: "These awards have always been in existence for 11 years and to have the WICB on board again for the second year shows how dedicated both parties are to the best interest of cricket in the West Indies. The region is being encouraged to partner also, as cricket is rebounding and we ought to be able to have the support of the region."

In agreeing that the joint awards ceremony works, WICB CEO Michael Muirhead thinks the two organisations have one thing in common -- its players.

"Any efforts to collaborate for the players are worthy of support and we look forward to have our players perform on top of the world in all formats of the game."

PJ Patterson, former Jamaican prime minister, who now chairs the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) cricket committee, will give the keynote address.

Winning Warriors

Barbados Nation article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Out-of-favour Barbados opening batsman Rashidi Boucher stroked a brilliant, unbeaten half century to lead Belle Warriors to the capture of the 2014 West Indies Softball Cricket Festival.

They defeated highly-fancied West Coast Stars in the final by one wicket with a single delivery to spare on Monday evening at the Dash Valley Sports Complex.

Boucher’s masterful 59 not out contained one four and three sixes as he carried his bat to ensure that the Blenheim-based Warriors prevailed in a thrilling climax to the annual festival, which for the first time featured only men’s teams.

Warriors captain Anthony Stuart set the stage with a five-wicket haul as the previously unbeaten Stars posted a competitive 105 from 19.4 overs after winning the toss.

Major contributions came from Vonrick Nurse (22), former Barbados batsman Alcindo Holder (20), Alphonso Lashley (18) and captain Anthony Young (15), while Stuart was well supported by namesake Jameel (3 for 5).

With nine runs required from the last over, Boucher, who opened the batting, smacked a boundary off the first ball bowled by Young.

Three were needed with two balls left but a high full toss that resulted in three byes gave the youthful Warriors the victory.

Such was Boucher’s domination of the chase that no other batsman reached double figures.

Young, Orion Bostic and Derwin Thompson each grabbed two wickets.

Earlier, Boucher warmed up for the final with a knock of 36 in the first semi-final versus Queen’s Park Masters, which Warriors won by 14 runs.

West Coast Stars made light work of Orange Hill Cavaliers in the other semi-final, racing to 64 for two in 11.3 overs when replying to the St James team’s 62 all out. Ebullient opening bat Ron Bates cracked 39 in quick time.

Warriors were rewarded the first prize of $3 000 along with the Colin Arthur Challenge Shield that was delivered to the ground by limousine and presented by Barbados Tourism Authority manager for sport Gregory Armstrong, a former Barbados fast bowler.

Despite the absence of women’s participation in this year’s event, coordinator Rodney Simpson promised a bigger and better festival next year He said he looked forward to attracting a number of overseas teams and to the return of the female segment.

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates – West Indies Twenty20 opener Dwayne Smith extended his good form in the Indian Premier League, blasting a half-century to power Chennai Super Kings to a five-wicket win over Darren Sammy’s Sunrisers Hyderabad here Sunday.

Chasing 146 for victory at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, CSK got home with three balls to spare to post their fourth win on the trot in the multi-million Twenty20 league.

Smith was once again at the forefront of the run chase, cracking 66 from 46 balls, with four fours and five sixes. He shared an opening stand of 85 off 65 balls with Brendon McCullum who scored 40 off 33 deliveries.

The Barbados batsman emerged from a watchful start to punish the Hyderabad attack, smashing two sixes off seamer Ishant Sharma’s opening over, the eighth of the innings.

He took CSK to within sight of victory before falling, holing out to long-off off seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the 16th over with 20 runs required for victory.

Smith was one of three wickets to fall in the late stages before captain MS Dhoni, with 13 not out, saw CSK home.

Earlier, Sammy had pummelled a typically explosive unbeaten 23 from 15 balls, with two fours and a six, as Hyderabad, opting to bat first, reached 145 for five off their 20 overs.

Opener Aaron Finch top scored with 44 from 45 balls while Smith had a role with the ball, taking one for 11 from two disciplined overs.

In the other game of the doubleheader at the venue, West Indies big-hitter Kieron Pollard found some form but his Mumbai Indians remained winless, after going down by six wickets to the Delhi Daredevils.

Choosing to bat first, Mumbai posted a paltry 125 for six, with Pollard scoring a measured unbeaten 33 from 30 balls, including two fours and two sixes.

Opener Murali Vijay then hammered 40 and Kevin Pietersen, an unbeaten 26 from 18 deliveries, to steer Delhi to victory with seven balls left in the contest.

LONDON – Barbados seamer Chris Jordan celebrated his new two-year contract with Sussex with a five-wicket haul, on the second day of their County Championship game against Somerset on Monday.

The right-armer picked up five for 76 as Somerset, resuming on 83 for three following Sunday’s rain-marred opening day at Hove, were dismissed for 372.

At the close, Sussex were 25 for one.

Jordan, who penned the contract extension last weekend, had taken two of the three wickets to fall on the first day and followed up with three more, as his outstanding start to the season continued.

He claimed Alfonso Thomas for four in the third over of the morning, lbw with just six runs added but then watched as captain and opener Marcus Trescothick (112) and South African Alviro Petersen (76), posted 139 for the fifth wicket to prop up the innings.

Once Petersen was out, five wickets fell for 69 runs before Lewis Gregory (47) and Johann Myburgh (37 not out) frustrated Sussex with a last wicket stand of 75.

Jordan fittingly broke the partnership when he had Gregory caught in the deep on the cover boundary.

At New Road, veteran West Indies left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul got a start but failed to push on as his Derbyshire were bowled out for 219 against Worcestershire.

Resuming on three runs for two wickets, Derbyshire were propelled by 32 from Chanderpaul in a 75-run, fourth wicket stand with captain Wayne Madsen who stroked 111 not out.

Worcestershire were 31 without loss in reply at the close.

Bridgetown, Barbados - A new Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) season will be ushered in tomorrow with a number of changes in personnel at the various clubs, which will not only showcase new players but different captains in some cases.

Instead of bowling off the season with the usual three-day Elite and Division One competitions, the BCA has decided this year, to start the ball rolling with the Sagicor Twenty20, which has been split into three zones of six teams.

However, the Intermediate and Second Division competitions will get under way as usual.

One of Barbados’ oldest clubs, CounterPoint Wanderers, will benefit from the transfer of at least four players, including two who have played at the first-class level.

Promising left-handed all-rounder Raymon Reifer, who has played for the Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) at the regional level, comes over from Sagicor UWI while discarded Barbados leg-spinner Nikolai Charles has parted company with ICBL Empire for the Dayrells Road-based side.

Barbados and West Indies Under-19 batsman Jonathan Drakes, who represented Empire towards the end of last season after playing for the Barbados Youth, is also at Wanderers, as well as his former Combermere teammate, Shane Moseley, who has left relegated Carlton.

After a number of seasons with the St Philip-based Republic Bank St Catherine, all-rounder Joel Leacock has left for 2013 Elite champions, CGI Maple.

Maple, who have a new captain in wicket-keeper/batsman Collis Worrell, will also welcome back swing bowler Renaldo Griffith from the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP).

Left-arm spinner Kemar Stanford, who played for ESAF Pickwick last year after leaving BDFSP, has also returned to Maple.

Wicket-keeper/batsman Mario Albert has made a switch from Maple to the Samuel Jackson Prescod Polytechnic-based Wildey Sports Club, which is no longer sponsored by Banks.

Also returning to Wildey is another wicket-keeper/batsman Renaldo Holder after a stint at Pickwick. Wildey will also have Barbados Youth’s off-spinning allrounder Romario Greaves and unheralded left-arm spinner Darian Greaves from King’s Park. Batsman Pedro Greaves takes over the captaincy at Wildey from leg-spinner Shad Simmons, who has transferred to Empire.

Improving all-rounder Ravindra Persaud has also graduated from the BDFSP and is expected to leave in another two months for a playing stint in Canada.

St Catherine, who will have a new captain in batsman Shamar Cooke, will welcome two young wicket-keeper/batsmen, Tevyn Walcott and Shane Proverbs from the Barbados Youth, into their ranks.

Former Barbados hard-hitting wicket-keeper/batsman Carlo Morris has left Carlton after several seasons with the Black Rock team, to join Second Division side Transport Board.

Barbados Under-19 captain Jameel “Salty” Stuart, who made a brief appearance for Pickwick late last year, has joined forces with SuperCentre Spartan.

Police have also lost the slimly-built off-spinner Jason “Spinal” Smith to St Catherine and fast-bowling all-rounder Rico Webb, who has gone next door to Spartan.

Former Barbados Under-19 leg-spinner Mario Miller, who had limited opportunities at UWI in recent seasons because of the presence of Jamaican leg-spinner Akeem Dewar, will be turning out for YMPC this year.

Another UWI player, off-spinning all-rounder Armani Best has linked up with Division One side Yorkshire, who narrowly failed to gain promotion to the Elite last season.

UWI will have the Jamaican duo of left-arm spinner Linton Buchanan and fast bowler Jermaine Levy this season as well as fast bowler Dawayne Sealy, who comes over from Carlton.

A number of the leading players are expected to miss the start of the season because of overseas contracts.

Maple’s spinning all-rounder Jamar “Butter Beans” Griffith, UWI batsman Nekoli Parris and Wanderers’ new allrounder Roshon Primus will be in England playing league cricket while

St Catherine’s Omar Phillips, LIME’s Javon Searles, Spartan’s Shamarh Brooks and Maple’s Jed Yearwood have been playing club cricket in Trinidad and Tobago.

All-rounder Kyle Mayers, who was also playing in the twin-island republic, is expected to captain Carlton this year.
