Defending champs Barbados nail No. 22

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Barbados captured their 22nd first class title on Monday when rain forced a draw between contenders Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana on the final day of that game in Georgetown.

The Barbadians, the defending champions in the competition, started the final round in second spot but defeated Leeward Islands by an innings and 49 runs at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua on Sunday, to leapfrog T&T and move to 82 points.

T&T, who started the final round of matches in the Regional Four-Day Championship in pole position on 72 points, could only muster eight points from their stalemate at the Guyana National Stadium on Monday.

This meant Barbados secured the WICB President’s Trophy, recording four wins, a loss and a draw during their campaign. T&T, meanwhile, finished second with an identical record.

Windward Islands claimed third spot with 65 points while Jamaica secured fourth spot with 59 points, following their 59-run over Combined Campuses and Colleges at the 3Ws Oval here Monday.

The top four teams will now battle for the Headley/Weekes Trophy, starting on Saturday, with Barbados taking on Jamaica at Kensington Oval and Trinidad & Tobago hosting the Windwards at Queen's Park Oval in Port-of-Spain.

The final is carded to start on April 25.

CCC, meanwhile, finished fifth on 49 points, the Leewards were sixth on 42 while Guyana ended last on 29 points, and without a win in the competition.

Springer praises Barbados 4-Day players

WICB Media Release.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Barbados Head Coach Hendy Springer has praised his players for their professionalism and commitment, following their capture of the WICB Regional 4Day League.

The Bajans were crowned regional first-class champions for the 22nd time on Monday as they ended the tournament with 82 points ahead of second place Trinidad & Tobago on 80 points. The capture also means the Barbadians have achieved the “double” having won the NAGICO Super50 tournament which was played in Trinidad & Tobago in February.

Under the captaincy of Kraigg Brathwaite, the champions played six matches and had wins against T&T, Guyana, Jamaica and Leeward Islands. They drew against the Combined Campuses & Colleges and lost to Windward Islands.

“It is indicative of the effort that the players have put in over a period of time and it is good that we have won and brought some glory to Barbados cricket again. Barbados has a rich cricket history and it is important that these young men continue to respect that legacy and that history and strive to perform and do well for their country,” Springer said.

“This result – winning the 4Day tournament to add to the one-day title – is just the beginning of things we want to achieve as we go along. Earlier in the year, we set out a plan and we worked hard to reach those points we set. It was a total team effort … we had some guys who stood out and we will use this as motivation as we push on to the business end of the season.”

Springer said the high point of the season was their victory over Trinidad & Tobago at Kensington Oval. “Trinidad are always worthy opponents. We had to beat them and get full points and we went out and achieved that.”

Barbados will now face Jamaica at Kensington Oval in the semi-finals of the Final Four; while Trinidad and Tobago clash with Windward Islands at Queen’s Park Oval in the other semi-final. The winners of this phase will take home the Headley/Weekes Trophy named in honour of West Indies batting legends George Headley and Sir Everton Weekes.

“The focus is to look to win the game. But we are looking at the process...paying attention to details. We will treat them with respect but we will look to play some ‘strong’ cricket,” Springer said.

Lara 375: The inside story of the innings

$

BBC Sport article.

Twenty years ago this week, West Indies batsman Brian Lara broke Sir Garfield Sobers's 36-year-old world record for the highest score in a Test innings.

The legendary left-hander surpassed his compatriot's 365 not out as he scored 375 against England at Antigua's Recreation Ground in a historic match played from 16-21 April 1994.

BBC Sport spoke to those who witnessed his world record innings close up: two of Lara's West Indies team-mates - Phil Simmons and Shivnarine Chanderpaul - and five England players who suffered in the field: Angus Fraser, Jack Russell, Phil Tufnell, Graham Thorpe and Alec Stewart.

First morning: A false dawn for England

England went into the final Test of a five-match series on a high after becoming the first touring side to win in Barbados for 59 years in the previous Test, even though they were 3-1 down with the series gone. After losing the toss and being asked to field on a flat-looking wicket, England reduced the Windies to 12-2 - leaving Brian Lara and Jimmy Adams at the crease.

Former England fast bowler Angus Fraser: "We had lost the first three Tests and everybody was talking about a whitewash, and then we managed to win in Barbados. That was certainly a career highlight for many who played in that game - I got some wickets (8-115 in the match) and Alec Stewart got a hundred in each innings. It meant a dead series suddenly came to life."

Ex-England wicketkeeper Jack Russell: "When we got a couple of early wickets, I started thinking 'this is going alright, we'll knock this lot over and won't be out here for too long...'"

Fraser: "Things were looking quite positive but then Lara got in and just batted."

Ominous signs as Lara takes control

Brian Lara scored 11,953 runs in his 131 Test matches at an average of 52.88

During the remainder of the first day, Lara took West Indies to 274-3, advancing his score to 164.

Former England batsman Graham Thorpe: "He kept the same pace throughout his innings, there didn't seem to be a single risk taken in it. There was an inevitability about it all."

Russell: "The ball never looked like missing the middle of his bat."

Ex-England spinner Phil Tufnell: "I bowled my first over and was putting my jumper back on when Mike Atherton, the England captain, came over to me and said: 'Brian's batting well today, he might break the record.' He was only on 60! Athers was a clever bloke and he got it spot on."

Day Two: Lara tightens his grip on the game

Lara continued to pile on the runs, reaching 320 not out by the close of the second day. At the other end, he had been joined by 19-year-old Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who was playing in his debut series.

West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul: "He was probably the most focused I have seen him. He mentioned the record while he was in the dressing room and he was getting a lot of phone calls about it, but he always remained focused."

Former West Indies batsman Phil Simmons: "The biggest thing I can remember was his determination, from not being out on the first day, to get that record. You could see it in the way he was batting."

Fraser: "We realised the record was on quite early because of the nonchalant way he went from 100 to 150 to 200. Once he got to about 250, you begin to wonder where it was all going to end. By that stage you have tried all your tactics and your variety, it has not really got you anywhere and it begins to boil down to if he will make a mistake."

Former England batsman Alec Stewart: "At tea, his bat looked about three feet wide. The closer it got, even though I wanted to get him out every ball, you began to realise you were watching a historic achievement close up."

Simmons: "Throughout the innings, he remained the same - he'd come into the dressing room, relax and five or 10 minutes before it was time to go back out he would strap his pads back on and begin to focus again."

Tufnell: "He seemed to score in blocks of 10s and 20s: you would look up at the scoreboard and you would be wondering where all the runs had come from because there were no big, powerful shots. It was just sublime batting."

Calypso cricket, Lara cruising. Sledge time?

Fraser: "He was too good a player to sledge. You were wasting your time. It all comes down to who has the biggest gun and you don't have it, so you just sometimes have to accept you are playing against somebody bigger and better than you are."

Chanderpaul: "I can't remember England trying to get under his skin, but that's probably because nothing was going to put him off."

Russell: "There was never any arguing or sledging with the West Indies. They were so good they just got on with their cricket. With Lara, you didn't want to fire him up."

Expectation was growing amongst the home fans as Brian Lara got closer to the record

Fraser: "The energy within the crowd was brilliant. Antigua is a small, intimate ground which only holds 10 or 11,000. It's not in a great state of repair but it's full of character.

"There was a little double-decker stand which was packed. In it was a DJ called Cheeky, who played music between every ball and every over, it was real Calypso music. The whole stand would be shaking with people dancing and bouncing up and down. It was an amazing spectacle.

"I fielded down there and there was some playful jip - I remember when we (England) came out to bat later in the game 'Who Let The Dogs Out' was blaring out over the speakers. It was great fun and never boring."

History - cartwheels, corn soup & chicken wings

Lara was 320 not out at the start of the third day, still 46 runs away from breaking Sir Garfield Sobers's world record of 365, for West Indies against Pakistan in Jamaica in 1958.

Fraser: "We were aware of history potentially being made but I wasn't aware of the stuff happening behind the scenes with Garry Sobers being brought to the ground. Television crews were setting up for something significant happening. It was the third morning when he had a little dodgy period and I had to remind him not to throw it away."

Thorpe: "We heard he had played nine holes of golf that morning, so he was pretty relaxed."

Stewart: "As he got closer to the record, we were trying to keep him off strike. The field did come in, but only when he drew level with the record."

Lara was on 365 when he hooked Chris Lewis for four...

Tufnell: "I had a quick word with Chris Lewis and told him to make him do something to earn the runs - don't just give him one off the hips so he can clip it. Chris decided to bowl him a bumper and he just pulled it away with ease and then the whole place erupted."

As supporters rushed on to the pitch, Sobers, the man who had just lost the world record to Lara, walked to the middle to congratulate his compatriot.

Chanderpaul (who was still batting at other end): "It was the most exciting thing I have ever witnessed. The moment was so big for everyone who was around. Once he scored the boundary to break the record, it was difficult to get near him to celebrate with him but he came to me and then we went off to meet Sir Garry [Sobers]."

Simmons: "It was emotional when it happened, the biggest thing was that the previous record holder was there to congratulate Brian. For the record to stay in the West Indies, it was great. It was done by a son of the soil. Sir Garry appreciated that."

Sir Garfield Sobers said at the time: "I don't think a better person could have broken my record."

Fraser: "The whole place was rocking. There were people climbing over the fences and running onto the field doing cartwheels and headstands. As a fielder, you take your cap off because you know it's a good souvenir and you don't want somebody to run past you and nick it off your head!"

Simmons: "We weren't expecting to see the crowd run onto the pitch but there was nobody to stop them - the policemen were enjoying themselves too."

Tufnell: "I think there was a fella selling corn soup down at third man. Mid-on was selling chicken wings and somebody turned the music up. The place went ballistic. It took about 20 minutes for it to calm down.

"I was almost proud and pleased to be involved in the occasion. I just went and sat down at mid-on and enjoyed the sunshine and the moment."

Fraser: "I remember Darrell Hair, the umpire, telling somebody off for walking up and down the pitch. It was the groundsman."

Hang on a minute...wasn't Lara almost out?

Brian Lara dislodged a bail (the left one, above) as he pulled the ball for four to set the world record

Russell: "When he went past the record, he hit the stumps. The ball was over the boundary rope in a flash, but I remember the bail going up in the air because he had knocked it with his foot or his pad.

"As the ball travelled to the boundary, I was watching the bail and realising I would need to appeal if it fell off. I also thought to myself that if I do appeal, I won't make it home - I'll be lynched. The bail didn't fall off in the end but it stayed slightly out of its slot."

What happened next?

Fraser: "With all the chaos, nobody knew what was going on and who anybody on the pitch was.

"The most surprising thing was eventually, when the ground had been cleared, Chris Lewis went to the end of his mark to finish his over and he asked where the ball was. Despite the carnage and thousands of people out on the field, the ball was still resting against the boundary board where Lara had hit it.

"It would have been a great souvenir for somebody but, at the end of the innings, I got the ball and asked all of the England bowlers to sign it and presented it to him. Whether he still has it, I have no idea."

Lara was eventually dismissed for 375, caught behind by Russell off the bowling of Andrew Caddick. His innings lasted 766 minutes (12 hours 46 minutes), 538 balls and he scored 45 fours but no sixes.

Russell: "It's important to keep your concentration because he did edge one to me eventually. Two and a half days later!"

Chanderpaul: "At the end of that day, the dressing room was a very happy place to be. Everybody was out celebrating and having some fun. It was an exciting moment and I enjoyed it as a young fella just coming into the side in my debut series."

Lara reflects on the world record in the sanctuary of the West Indies dressing room

Lara's legacy

Later that year, Lara would spend the summer as Warwickshire's overseas player. On 6 June, he set a new world record for the highest first-class score of all time. The 501 not out made against Durham is yet to be bettered. Lara lost his Test world record to Australia's Matthew Hayden when the opener scored 380 against Zimbabwe in Perth in 2003. However, he reclaimed the record when he scored 400 not out against England in Antigua in April 2004.

Stewart: "He's the best player I have played against. I'm splitting hairs between him and Sachin Tendulkar but I have always just put Brian at the top of the tree because he would destroy a bowling attack and, when you set fields, he would put the ball where you have just taken a fielder from. His appetite for run-scoring, while also taking the attacking option, makes him stand apart."

Fraser: "You look at the top 15-20 innings that have ever been played and this fella has made half a dozen of them."

Thorpe: "I got to watch a lot of his innings from side on and I put a lot of my style, when I became aggressive and pro-active, down to watching great players like him. I looked at the little bits, like his foot movement, his backlift. He had everything as a player. What set him apart was his ability to get two world records and bat for that length of time."

Russell: "Lara would bat and bat but he would kill you by scoring so quickly. The game would race by because he'd score two or three boundaries an over and you couldn't do anything about it. He's one of those players who when he bats, you stop what you are doing."

Regional 4-Day Tournament Semi-finals

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – This weekend’s semi-finals in the Regional 4-Day Tournament can further define the season for all four teams taking part.

Barbados will have home advantage and will put their reputation of being regional champions for the second straight year on the chopping block at Kensington Oval in Barbados, where they face a Jamaica side looking to put a shaky season behind them.

Trinidad & Tobago will be aiming to put aside the disappointment of narrowly missing out on their first R4D title in seven years, when they meet a rested, but plucky Windward Islands side at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.

The four teams are playing for a place in the Final, where the winner will be awarded the George Headley/Everton Weekes Trophy.

Both the Barbadians and T&T have prevailed over their opponents during the preliminary matches earlier in the seasons – and will be seeking to keep the traffic flowing one way in these crucial matches.

As they did in the fifth round, Barbados will be looking to seriously reverse recent history against the Jamaicans – they have not beaten them on home soil in three matches over the last six years.

Barbados captain Kraigg Brathwaite said his side was entering the match with confidence, following a streak of four straight wins that led to the title, but he knows Jamaica are a formidable foe.

“They won’t be easy opposition,” said Brathwaite. “We are ready for them, but we’re not going to take them lightly. We’re going to come and work hard and play at our best.

“Obviously, it is a home advantage, but we are looking to go out there and play the same cricket we played before – that’s about it. We’re not underestimating them. We will go out and play them just as hard as we played them in Jamaica.”

Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert said it was an achievement for his side to reach the Final Four, following the topsy-turvy season they endured – but it’s a chance to end the season strongly.

“It was good that we ended the preliminary competition with a victory after losing three straight,” said Lambert. “It’s been a long time since we lost three matches in a season, so it was nice to return to winning ways and boost our confidence ahead of this match.

“Playing for your country should be motivation enough. Every time we take the field we give it our all and we will not be giving any less in this match. We want to come out in this match and put up a good show against Barbados in this match.”

Barbados have kept faith with the squad that brought them victory over the Leewards inside three days, but Jamaica have replaced Jon-Ross Campbell with veteran all-rounder Dave Bernard Jr, who has recovered from injury.

T&T have dominated Windwards since the turn of the century, winning 12 of their 18 matches during that period, including a huge second-round victory, and enter this match as favourites.

West Indies wicketkeeper/batsman Denesh Ramdin has returned from the World Twenty20 Tournament in Bangladesh and will take over the reins of leadership from Rayad Emrit of a confident side.

“The guys did very well and we had a chance of winning the title, but the weather intervened unfortunately,” said Ramdin. “We still have two more matches ahead of us to win a title and so we are going to take this weekend very seriously.

“The Windwards have a very good team, so we are looking for the guys to continue doing what they have been doing all season, scoring runs and getting wickets, and getting good results.”

Liam Sebastien was at the helm when Windwards won the Regional Super50 Tournament last year and will be hoping he can again inspire his side to a title.

“We are coming off a bye last week, so everyone is fresh and ready to go,” said Sebastien. “We have a few players coming into the side that did not play earlier in the season and this should be a boost.

“We have to play to our strengths. Our bowling is our strength and they have been doing exceptionally well, but we also have to bat well, and this has been our challenge this season. There have been some individual performances, but we have not been able to bat consistently well as a team.”

Apart from Ramdin, spin bowling all-rounder Akeal Hosein returns to the T&T side, which also welcomes uncapped off-spinner Ancil Bhagan in place of the retired Amit Jaggernauth, while the Windwards welcome back champion off-spinner Shane Shillingford from injury.

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Both webcasts of the semi-finals in the Regional 4-Day Tournament, starting on Saturday, will benefit from enhanced video production.

Viewers around the World will be able to enjoy multi-camera coverage of the matches on the West Indies Cricket Board’s website, www.windiescricket.com.

“We’re very excited about this initiative,” said WICB Marketing & Communications Manager Imran Khan.

“This will certainly enhance the online webcasts significantly from the single-camera operation which we have employed during the preliminary rounds and in previous years.

“We will now have multi-camera productions from Barbados and Trinidad respectively, and we trust that fans will log on and enjoy the coverage and share the information with their friends and colleagues.”

Khan said viewers of the match between Barbados and Jamaica will also have the additional feature of replays and built-in graphics.

The webcasts will also have commentary with the “live” ball-by-ball radio feed from the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation accompanying the coverage of the match in Barbados, while a small team of presenters, including West Indies fast bowling legend Colin Croft, has been assembled for the coverage of the match in Trinidad.

“We are also grateful for the support towards this initiative from the two host territorial boards, the Barbados Cricket Association and the T&T Cricket Board without whose assistance this could not have been achieved,” said Khan.

He said the WICB is also planning to have enhanced webcasts of the Final, which starts next Friday at a venue to be determined, depending on the outcome of this weekend’s matches.

The WICB will continue its “live” online text updates on its social media platforms – www.facebook.com/windiescricket and www.twitter.com/windiesregional.

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Combined Campuses & Colleges may have failed to make the semi-finals of the Regional 4-Day Tournament, but they produced the top batsman, bowler and fielder following the preliminary rounds.

Shacaya Thomas, Ryan Austin and Kyle Corbin headed the respective lists after the first seven rounds of the Tournament.

Thomas, a pugnacious, 25-year-old opener from St. Catherine in Jamaica, finished with an aggregate of 548 from 12 innings in six matches at an average of 45.66.

He struck two hundreds, including his maiden of 176 against Guyana in the fourth round on “home soil” at the Three Ws Oval in Barbados.

Austin, the vibrant, 32-year-old off-spinner, born in Trinidad and raised in Barbados, collected 33 wickets from 258.4 overs in six matches at a miserly 17.57 runs apiece.

During the season, the lanky Austin became the third bowler to capture 300 wickets in the R4D behind retired Guyanese leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo and fellow off-spinner Shane Shillingford from Windward Islands.

Corbin gave evidence throughout the season that he has one of the safest pairs of hands, grabbing 22 catches, many of them thanks to Austin close to the wicket.

The top wicketkeeper during the preliminary rounds was Windwards’ Lindon James. He had 25 dismissals, comprising 22 catches and three stumpings.

Jamaica hoping to halt Barbados juggernaut

Trinidad Express article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Jamaica will attempt to thwart rampant Barbados’ charge towards yet another title, when they two teams meet in the semi-final of the Headley/Weekes Trophy here today.

More importantly, the Jamaicans will look to salvage their Regional first class season which saw them uncharacteristically finish fourth in the WICB President’s Trophy, and secure their spot in the final four of the Headley/Weekes Trophy only in the last preliminary round of matches last week.

They started the competition strongly, winning their first two matches but then capitulated to lose three in a row and find themselves in fifth spot in the standings, and in danger of missing out on the semi-finals. Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert said their victory in the last round over Combined Campuses and Colleges, however, had given his side good impetus going into the semi-final at Kensington Oval.

When the two sides met during the regular season, it was Barbados who prevailed, with a convincing 245-run victory at Sabina Park. Lambert admits Jamaica’s batting has let them down this season. Carlton Baugh has been their leading batsman with 367 runs at average of 45 and though Nkrumah Bonner (326) and opener John Campbell (319) have both scored over 300 runs, they have averaged less than 28.

Barbados, meanwhile, will be looking to add the Headley/Weekes Trophy to their impressive collection this season. They opened the year by capturing the Regional Super50 and followed up last week by winning the WICB President’s Trophy. The hosts lost their opening game of the series to Windward Islands but then played unbeaten and captain Kraigg Brathwaite likes his side’s form heading into the semi-finals.

SQUADS:

BARBADOS (from): Kraigg Brathwaite (captain), Sulieman Benn, Carlos Brathwaite, Jonathan Carter, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Shane Dowrich, Fidel Edwards, Kirk Edwards, Shai Hope, Ashley Nurse, Omar Phillips, Kevin Stoute.

JAMAICA (from): Tamar Lambert (captain), Carlton Baugh Jr, Jermaine Blackwood, Nkrumah Bonner, Brian Buchanan, John Campbell, Dave Bernard Jr, Sheldon Cottrell, Damion Jacobs, Andre McCarthy, Nikita Miller, Marlon Samuels, Jerome Taylor.

Miller - Jamaica looking to make amends

Jamaica Observer article.

Kingston, Jamaica - Jamaica will be on the hunt for revenge when they clash with League champions Barbados at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown in the semifinal of the Regional Four- Day tournament today.

In the other semi-final, Trinidad & Tobago host Windward Islands at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain.

Play in both semi-final games is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am Jamaica time. Jamaica, who were defeated embarrassingly at home to Barbados during a three-game losing skid in the preliminary stage, ended fourth in the league standings with 59 points.

Last year’s winners Barbados took the 2013-14 President’s Trophy after finishing top of the league standings with 82 points, followed by Trinidad & Tobago (80) and Windward Islands (65).

The Combined Campuses and Colleges finished fifth with 49 points, ahead of Leeward Islands (42) and last-placed Guyana (29). Jamaica’s left-arm orthodox slow bowler Nikita Miller, who was delighted after a dramatic win over the Combined Campuses that propelled the team into the semis, told the that the aim is to avenge the loss to Barbados.

“We are playing against Barbados and they are tough opponents.

They have beaten us so far this season at home. We are looking to make amends and put in a good show against them,” said Miller, while adding that improvement is expected from a faltering batting unit. Miller noted the resilience shown against the Combined Campuses — a team that has never beaten Jamaica outright in a Four-day game.

According to Miller, Jamaica, the most successful Four-Day team of the last decade, just “couldn’t afford” to miss out on the semi-final. After winning the President’s Trophy and retaining the tag of regional title-holder, the marauding Barbados team is regarded by many to be the favourite among the top four to now land the Headley/Weekes Trophy.

Barbados head coach Hendy Springer lauded his team for exhibiting professionalism and commitment, but said “the focus is to look to win the game” against Jamaica. “We will treat them with respect, but we will look to play some strong cricket,” Springer continued. The Headley/Weekes Trophy is named in honour of West Indies batting legends George Headley and Sir Everton Weekes.

Squads

Jamaica — Tamar Lambert (capt), John Campbell, Nkrumah Bonner, Jermaine Blackwood, Marlon Samuels, Andre McCarthy, Carlton Baugh, Damion Jacobs, Nikita Miller, Jerome Taylor, Sheldon Cotterell, David Bernard Jnr, Brian Buchanan.

Barbados — Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), Sulieman Benn, Carlos Brathwaite, Jonathan Carter, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Shane Dowrich, Fidel Edwards, Kirk Edwards, Shai Hope, Ashley Nurse, Omar Phillips, Kevin Stoute.

Smith's knock in vain as Chennai lose

By CMC.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – Dwayne Smith’s boundary-studded half century was in vain as Chennai Super Kings went down by six wickets to Kings XI Punjab on Good Friday here.

Opting to bat first at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, CSK piled up a daunting 205 for four off their 20 overs, with Smith stroking 66 off 43 balls.

The Barbados and West Indies right-hander counted six fours and three sixes, and posted 123 for the first wicket with New Zealander Brendon McCullum, who struck 67 off 45 balls with four fours and five sixes.

Smith, in his first season for CSK following his move from Mumbai Indians, batted well into the 17th over to provide stability to the innings, before mis-hitting seamer Lakshmipathy Balaji to George Bailey at cover to depart.

His efforts, however, were overshadowed by Glenn Maxwell who smashed 95 from 43 balls with 15 fours and two sixes, to lead a successful Kings XI run chase.

CSK were still in with chance when they reduced Kings XI to 52 for three in the sixth over but Maxwell combined with South African David Miller – whose unbeaten 54 came from 37 balls – in a 115-run, fourth wicket stand, to erase any notions of defeat.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach escaped serious injury following a car accident here early Saturday, the Barbados Today online newspaper has reported.

The 25-year-old crashed his BMW sedan after losing control in slippery conditions at Wanstead Drive, just outside the city.

According to Barbados Today, the car flipped several times before landing in the 3Ws Park, approximately half-mile from the 3Ws Oval. Roach sustained a head wound but appeared coherent as he was taken by ambulance from the scene.

Hours afterward, he took to online social network, Twitter, to indicate he was well, though not directly referencing the accident.

Roach has played 23 Tests and 61 One-Day Internationals but has not suited up for West Indies in nearly a year because of injury.

Jamaica defy Dowrich to snatch honours

Bridgetown, Barbados, CMC – Jamaica defied a half-century from Shane Dowrich to grab an early advantage over Barbados in their Headley/Weekes Trophy semi-final on Saturday here.

Left-arm fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell grabbed three for 28 from 8.3 overs, leg-spinner Damion Jacobs bagged three for 58 from 21 overs and Dave Bernard Jr took two for 32 from nine overs, as the Barbadians were dismissed for 245 in their first innings about an hour after tea on the opening day at Kensington Oval.

Dowrich hit the top score of an unbeaten 69, Ashley Nurse supported with 45, Omar Phillips made 33 and Shai Hope got 28, but the home team failed to make proper use of ideal conditions at Kensington Oval after they chose to bat.

At the close, John Campbell was not out on 25 and Damion Jacobs was yet to score, as the Jamaicans reached 52 for one.

The visitors lost opener Nkrumah Bonner lbw to off-spinner Ashley Nurse for 26, sweeping across the line to a well-pitched delivery, after putting on 51 for the first wicket with the left-handed Campbell.

Earlier, Barbados started steadily, but they were setback when their captain Kraigg Brathwaite was lbw to Bernard for 15.

A second-wicket stand of 53 between Phillips and Hope repaired the damage until the left-handed Phillips was caught at backward square leg off Jacobs from a sweep inside the last half-hour before lunch which arrived with Barbados 85 for two.

After the interval, Barbados lost their way through a combination of carelessness from their batsmen and thoughtful cricket from Jamaica.

Hope was run out in the fourth over after the interval going for a quick single, Jonathan Carter was caught at forward short leg off Jacobs essaying a slog sweep thanks to an amazing catch from close fielder Bonner, Kevin Stoute was lbw to Jacobs for 11 and Carlos Brathwaite was run out going for a quick single, as the Barbadians slumped to 134 for six.

Nurse joined Dowrich and they carried Barbados to 186 for six at tea and brought some respectability to their side’s batting after the break, when they completed a half-century stand.

Dowrich reached his 50 from 90 balls when he clipped a delivery from fast bowler Jerome Taylor through backward square leg for a single and Nurse had visions of reaching the same landmark before he was bowled by Cottrell, when a ball heading down the leg-side ricocheted from his pads onto the stumps.

There was little or no resistance from the rest of the Barbados batting, as they lost their last four wickets for 10 runs in the space of 15 minutes, earning just one batting point and conceding three to the Jamaicans.

Under tournament rules, the side that either wins or accumulates the most points in the semi-final will qualify for the Final of the Tournament which has now been re-scheduled to start next Saturday, April 26.

Barbados made one change to their line-up from the previous match, when they brought fast-medium bowler Miguel Cummins in to replace West Indies batsman Kirk Edwards, who has been sidelined with a groin strain.

Jamaica similarly made one change, swapping veteran all-rounder Bernard for West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels, who has a hamstring injury.

Lambert hundred puts Jamaica ahead

$

Bridgetown, Barbados, CMC – Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert ripped up the form book and gathered his third first-class hundred to fortify his side’s position against Barbados in their Headley/Weekes semi-final here Sunday.

Lambert shrugged off his patchy form this season to hit the top score of 121 to be the rock upon which his side built a first innings total of 302 on the second day of the match at Kensington Oval, for a lead of 57.

Click Here For Day 1 Report.

The 33-year-old Lambert reached his hundred from 164 balls, when he slog/swept a delivery from beanpole left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn over mid-wicket for the third of his four sixes.

He put on 114 for the seventh wicket with Dave Bernard Jr that took the steam out of the Barbadians and restored stability to their innings, after they slumped to 140 for six in the first hour after lunch.

Bernard supported with 42, Jermaine Blackwood made 37, John Campbell got 31, and night-watchman Damion Jacobs added 21.

Benn was the pick of the Barbados bowlers with five for 102 from 35 overs, off-spinner Ashley Nurse captured two for 47 from 16 overs and Fidel Edwards took two for 58 from 12 overs.

Batting again in their second innings, Barbados reached 18 for one, with Kraigg Brathwaite not out on seven and Shai Hope unbeaten on five.

Left-arm pacer Sheldon Cottrell gave the Jamaicans a further boost, when he had left-handed opener Omar Phillips caught behind for two.

Earlier, Jamaica, starting the day on 52 for one, were dismissed about half-hour before the close, following a pivotal hundred from Lambert that also included a dozen fours from 173 balls in 220 minutes.

Left-handed opener Campbell, who was not out on 25 overnight, was lbw to Benn for 31, essaying a sweep in the first half-hour of the day.

Jacobs frustrated the Barbadians for close to an hour before he was caught at silly-point, leaving Jamaica 98 for three.

Jamaica stumbled to 117 for four at lunch, when Andre McCarthy was caught at mid-wicket off Nurse for a duck just before the players left the field.

After the interval, Jermaine Blackwood was adjudged caught at silly point off Benn for 37, with television replays suggesting the ball had struck the turf first.

The Jamaicans were on the ropes, when Lambert, on 20, was dropped by Benn, but Carlton Baugh Jr  (10) was run out, backing up too far when the ball ricocheted from the hands of the bowler.

Bernard came to the crease and with Lambert they resurrected their side’s chances in keeping with the religious holiday being celebrated around the world on the day, with a steady partnership that carried their side to 217 for six at tea.

After the break, they put the Jamaicans in the lead before Bernard was lbw to Edwards, triggering another period of instability that left the visitors wobbling on 264 for nine.

But Lambert farmed the strike in a last-wicket stand of 38 with Cottrell to reach his milestone and earn his side a three valuable batting points, taking their aggregate for the match so far to six, two more than the home team.

Under tournament rules, the side that either wins or accumulates the most points in the semi-final will qualify for the Final of the Tournament which has now been re-scheduled to start next Saturday, April 26.
