Man of the Match Smith had to do the job

WICB Media Release.

DHAKA, Bangladesh – Dwayne Smith scored a career-best T20 International half-century as he piloted West Indies to a massive victory over Bangladesh in their second match of the ICC World T20 Tournament.

The defending champions needed a win after Sunday night’s defeat against India, and Smith responded with a blazing 72 to set-up a stiff target of 171-7 off 20 overs. He hit 10 fours and three sixes in an opening stand of 97 with Chris Gayle, who made a run-a-ball 48.

Leg-spinner Samuel Badree then turned in a career-best performance to end to end with figures of 4-0-15-4.  He got excellent support from new ball partner Krishmar Santokie, who had figures of 4-0-17-3 as Bangladesh were bowled out for 98 off 19.1 overs.

“It was a much drier pitch to the one we had against India on Sunday and a few ball kept a bit low. But I had a job to do and that is what I set out to do. I decided to stay positive and things worked out. It was great to get off to a winning start in the tournament,” Smith told reporters.

“I will go back to the first game when we lost. After that game and the speeches that we had after, I was surprised because normally, we would probably drop our heads but everyone still had their heads up, and I was glad to see that. We were still confident and this win will make us even more confident now. I am sure we will get back on track and back to winning ways again.”

Smith secured the Man-of-the-Match award for his match-winning innings. He noted that after the opening defeat he went back to the drawing board and had an intense training session on Monday.

“The Indians bowled a lot better, they hit the ball in the areas and they got the ball to swing a lot more as well. I went back into the nets and I worked myself very hard. I said to the coaches, especially the batting coach Stuart Williams, that I have to get off to a start. As long as I get a good start, I am sure that I can do well,” the 30-year-old said.

Smith said the West Indies remain real contenders to retain the trophy they won in Sri Lanka two years ago and also backed his opening partner Chris Gayle to deliver something big.

“I am sure that Chris will get the runs at some point of time in this tournament because he has been batting through the first six, he has been batting to ten overs. I am sure that at some point, he is going to get off to a good start.

“My aim is to get off to a good start and that’s how I play. It’s just for me to keep scoring and if Chris is working himself in, at least there won’t be any pressure on him if I am scoring freely,” Smith noted.

“I just try my best to get West Indies off to good starts and get them into good positions. I am not worried about outscoring Chris, I am just there to get partnerships and get West Indies into good positions. You just have to stay positive and make sure you do better than the other team.”

West Indies will next play against Australia on Friday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. First ball is 3:30 pm (5:30 am Eastern Caribbean Time/4:30 am Jamaica Time).

Bajan centurions praise help of mentors

Barbados Nation article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Two young national cricketers emphasised the importance of support and mentorship, acknowledging the role of former Barbados captain Carlisle Best in their success against Trinidad and Tobago at Kensington Oval last weekend.

When Ashley Nurse completed his maiden first-class century on Saturday, a knock in which he remained unbeaten on 130, he acknowledged the contribution of Best, a former West Indies batsman and Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation commentator, by pointing his raised bat in the direction of the media centre.

“I want to thank him for talking to me and Carlos through the innings,” Nurse told MIDWEEKSPORT following the match in which he also captured six wickets and took four catches, including one off his own bowling.

“It’s nice to see a legend in cricket in Barbados cheer you on and help you to keep focus. I raised my bat to him yesterday but I just want to make it official,” Nurse said.

Carlos Brathwaite, who made 109 and with Nurse put on 190 runs for the eighth wicket, was also highly appreciative of the support offered by Best.

“When I first came out to bat he was basically saying, be supportive of Shane (Dowrich), get through the evening and then he really came into full flow yesterday when we came back out, myself and Shane.

“After Shane got out he was even more vocal when Ashley came in. He basically told Ashley to play the supporting role for [me].

“After the start that Ashley had and the momentum that he had, then he quickly told me, well, you know it’s your time to support and he basically walked us through both of our innings, giving each one of us support from either end,” Brathwaite said of Best, who shouted his comments from the area just underneath the media centre, located at the southern end of the ground.

Best, speaking after the comments from Nurse and Brathwaite, was deeply moved by the appreciation shown by the two young cricketers.

“It just shows that the right messaging system, the right message alerts are needed,” Best said.

“It was not only about beating Trinidad and Tobago that I was thinking about, but helping players to manage their abilities which allow them to produce and achieve high performance targets,” Best explained.

The former West Indies batsman said he had developed a batting psychology programme and a performance management system.

“I am sure that I could be of use not only to the Barbados team, but also the West Indies team,” said Best.

Regional 4-Day Tournament Round 5

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Reigning champions and current leaders Barbados will have to strongly reverse recent history to keep their title defence on track, when they face Jamaica in the fifth round of the Regional 4-Day Tournament, starting on Friday at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.

The Barbadians have lost their previous three matches against the Jamaicans, including twice at the match venue two years ago, although their previous victory was four years ago at the Frank Worrell Memorial Ground in Trinidad.

The visitors’ previous victory in Jamaica came seven years ago, when they prevailed by an innings and 31 runs, and they can lean on this, as well as their hosts’ defeat in the previous round of matches as motivation.

Second-placed Windward Islands, brimming with confidence following their stirring, seven-wicket victory over the Jamaicans in the previous round, will meet Leeward Islands at the Queen’s Park Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada.

Contests between the Windwards and Leewards are always compelling – and this should be another intriguing battle.

The last seven matches between the two sides have each produced a winner, with the Leewards holding a 4-3 edge.

The Leewards can also take confidence in the knowledge that they were triumphant on the previous three occasions they played in the Spice Isle in 2001, 2005 and 2008 – so the Windwards will have their work cut out to defend home soil.

There will be an extra-special reason for West Indies fans to follow the happenings in the day/night fixture between Trinidad & Tobago and Combined Campuses & Colleges at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

The match will mark the return of West Indies international Kieron Pollard to competitive action, following a six-month lay-off to recover from a knee injury, which required surgery to repair.

Pollard is known for his exploits in the shortest version of the game, but the 26-year-old harbours visions of one day playing Tests for West Indies. This match provides him with a platform not only to fortify the process of his physical rehabilitation, but also remind fans of his ability in a longer format.

For the record, he has played 24 first-class matches – all for T&T in the R4D – and has scored 1,421 runs at an average of 38.40. His tally includes three hundreds – with a top score of 174 against Barbados five years ago at Guaracara Park in Trinidad – and seven half-centuries.

On a broader scale, T&T were set back when the Barbadians crushed them in the previous round and will be looking to strongly rebound on home soil, where they have won twice already this season.

CCC is a side that T&T would relish playing to stay on course for a top-four finish, having beaten the visitors in their previous three meetings in the R4D.

Jamaica, Barbados clash at Sabina Park

Jamaica Gleaner article.

Kingston, Jamaica - Jamaica, still reeling from their three-wicket loss to the Windward Islands earlier this week, will seek to rebound quickly when they play leaders and defending champions Barbados in the fifth round of the WICB Four-Day Championship at Sabina Park, starting today.

Jamaica are currently third in the points standing with 38 points with a game in hand. This is eight less than the Barbadians, who earlier this week scored an impressive innings and a 160-run win over Trinidad and Tobago at Kensington Oval.

"Barbados are normally tough opposition, and appear to be playing good cricket at the moment," said Jamaica captain, Tamar Lambert.

"However, coming off our first loss, we need to bounce back, and that is what we will be; aiming for."

Jamaica have made one change to the team which lost to the Windward Islands. Opener Jon-Ross Campbell has replaced Horace Miller.

Edwards Replaces Best

The Kraigg Brathwaite-led Barbados, in the meanwhile, have also made one change to their squad for the clash. Fast bowler Fidel Edwards has come in for fellow seamer, Tino Best.

"Our form is good, the vibe is right, and we are ready for the match-up," said Barbados coach, Henderson Springer.

"It's always difficult to beat Jamaica in their backyard, but as Windwards proved, it is possible."

In other matches, second-place Windward Islands on 45 points, will host the Leeward Islands in Grenada, while fourth-place Trinidad and Tobago (36) will entertain Combined Campuses and Colleges, who are on 28.

Kingston, Jamaica, CMC/WICB Media – West Indies batsman Kirk Edwards stroked his second century of the Regional Four-Day season as Barbados kept Jamaica in the field all day here Friday.

On the opening day of the fifth round match at Sabina Park, Edwards hit 105 to help the defending champions up to 275 for six, after they were sent in.

Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich was unbeaten on 40 while all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite scored 34 and captain Kraigg Brathwaite, 29.

Left-arm spinner Nikita Miller has taken three for 73. But Jamaica enjoyed the better start as Barbados lost their first wicket with one run on the board. Omar Phillips was trapped Leg Before Wicket by Jerome Taylor.

But Edwards and Kraigg Brathwaite ensured the ship did not rock, putting on an 89-run partnership, before Nikita Miller accounted for Kraigg Brathwaite.

From there, Barbados tied together a series of partnerships with Edwards as the anchor as the visitors started solidly against the table leaders. Day 3 starts at 11am Eastern Caribbean Time (10am Jamaica Time) tomorrow.

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - After contesting three finals in four years of the sixth annual Christ Church Foundation School Joel Garner Twenty20 tapeball tournament, Alleyne Aumni captured the title for the first time with a commanding 52-run win over last year's champions Foundation 'A' Old Scholars at Church Hill on Friday night.

It was a touching moment for the Belleplaine, St. Andrew team's long-standing captain and all-rounder Kenrick Marshall on the eve of his 53rd birthday.

Led by a fighting knock of 40 from former Barbados leg-spinning all-rounder Ryan "Shines" Layne, Alleyne scored 109 all out in 19.2 overs after winning the toss.

Layne, who went to the crease at No. 4, faced 36 balls and struck three fours and two sixes before he was last out, bowled by Barbados and West Indies Under-19 team left-arm fast bowler Jerome Jones, who took five for 16 off 3.2 overs.

Kemar Smith, a brother of Barbados and West Indies limited overs player Dwayne Smith, was the only other double-figure contributor with 13 as the total was beefed up by 40 extras.

Eight batsmen were bowled including all of Jones' victims after he came on as the fifth and final bowler.

Pacer Damien Farley picked up two for 20.

Foundation 'A' lost wickets steadily against a four-pronged seam attack, splendidly led by seasoned campaigners Andre Evelyn and Marshall, and they were bowled out for 57 in 15 overs.

Wicket-keeper/batsman Renaldo Arthur was the only batsman to reach double-figures with 14.

Marshall took three for nine, Evelyn, three for 19 and Jamel Noel, two for 11.

Layne won the Baron's Smokehouse $100 Player-of-the-Match award.

Apart from last year, Alleyne had been runners-up in 2011.

Summarised scores:

Alleyne Alumni beat Foundation 'A' Old Scholars by 52 runs.

Alleyne Alumni 109 all out (19.2 overs) (Ryan Layne 40, Kemar Smith 13; Jerome Jones 5-16, Damien Farley 2-20).

Foundation 'A' Old Scholars 57 all out (15 overs) (Renaldo Arthur 14; Kenrick Marshall 3-9, Andre Evelyn 3-19, Jamel Noel 2-11).

Toss: Alleyne Alumni.

Baron's Smokehouse $100 Player-of-the-Match: Ryan Layne.

Dowrich, Carter give Barbados the edge

Kingston, Jamaica, CMC – Wicketkeeper/batsman Shane Dowrich ended his long wait for a first class century as Barbados got the better of the exchanges on the second day of their Regional Four-Day game against Jamaica on Saturday.

The enterprising right-hander, in his 30th first class match, hit 102 to help Barbados to a massive 423 all out at Sabina Park, in their fifth round contest.

At the close, Jamaica were 150 for four after losing two wickets in the day’s final over from part-time seamer Jonathan Carter (2-4). Jermaine Blackwood has so far top scored with 64.

Dowrich was the star of the day, however. Resuming the day on 40 with Barbados on 275 for six, he anchored two solid partnerships en route to three figures.

He put on 85 for the seventh wicket with Jason Holder who hit 46 and then added a further a further 91 for the eighth wicket with Ashley Nurse who struck 40.

Overall, Dowrich faced 253 balls in 5-1/4 hours at the crease, striking five fours.

Holder, meanwhile, hit a four and a six off 81 balls while Nurse contributed two fours in his 113-ball knock.

Jamaica got a solid start from the Campbells, Jon-Ros (31) and John (21), with the pair posting 40 for the first wicket.

When both fell within five overs of each other to leave the hosts on 56 for two, Blackwood combined with Nkrumah Bonner, who was unbeaten on 31, to add an invaluable 94 for the third wicket.

Carter then knocked over Blackwood and Brian Buchanan with the first two balls of his second over as Barbados snatched the advantage late.

Sir Garry Sobers' 60th debut anniversary

$

Cricinfo article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Sir Garry Sobers - the Right Excellent Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers, to accord him his full title as a knight of the realm and the only living national hero of his native Barbados - is not the type who makes a fuss over his achievements as, in the words of the 1965 calypso, "the greatest cricketer on Earth or Mars".

If he is inclined to play down his two coincidentally simultaneous anniversaries on Sunday, he is sure to have been reminded of their significance several times in the past few days. They mark the start and the end of his celebrated Test career.

March 30 is 60 years to the day since Sobers first appeared in a Test match for West Indies, against England in 1954 in Kingston's Sabina Park. It is precisely 40 since his last, also against England, in Port-of-Spain's Queen's Park Oval in 1974.

He took the field at Sabina as a boy of 17 from the working-class district of Bayland on the outskirts of Bridgetown, raised, along with five siblings, by a mother widowed by the loss of her seaman husband to a German torpedo during World War II; her second son had no formal coaching, just a love and an aptitude for any ball game.

He was a late, like-for-like replacement for left-arm spinner Alf Valentine, who was injured; he batted at No. 9. His selection was based primarily on his unquestionable talent, obvious in only two preceding first-class matches for Barbados, against the touring Indians the year before and the Englishmen earlier on their tour. He was so anonymous that Wisden Cricketers' Almanack listed him as H Sobers in the India scorecard.

"Not a soul was there when I walked into the dressing room, they were in the nets practising," Sobers recalls of the day he turned up in the Kingston Cricket Club pavilion for his debut Test. "You then looked around and saw the names on the team sheet - Weekes... Worrell... Walcott... Rae... Stollmeyer... Ramadhin... I said to myself: 'You've arrived, you've made it'."

A return of 28.5-9-75-4 and scores of 14 not out and 26 as England won by nine wickets verified his temperament as much as his skill. By the time he strode on the Queen's Park Oval 20 years later, also against England, for his farewell match. after 92 Tests against all five of West Indies' opponents of the day, he had certainly "made it". It was a shame, but immaterial, that there was no grand finale; he was out for 0 and 20 and collected just three wickets in the match.

He had long since become a batsman supreme, departing as Test cricket's leading scorer, with 8032 runs, at an average of 57.78. His 26 centuries had been bettered only the insatiable Don Bradman's 29. His 235 wickets in three contrasting left-arm styles were second to Lance Gibbs among West Indians. His 109 catches, snared mostly with Venus-flytrap reflexes in the slips or round the corner off Gibbs, were eight short of Colin Cowdrey's tally.

He captained West Indies in 39 matches, the most until Clive Lloyd came along to carry his formidable teams for 74.

His name remained affixed to 365 not out against Pakistan in Kingston in 1958 as the highest Test innings for 36 years until Brian Lara, a similarly gifted West Indian left-hander Sobers had mentored since he appeared in the annual, long-running International Schools tournament in Barbados that carries Sobers' name, passed it in 1994.

They are statistics that explain Sobers' widely acknowledged status as the most complete all-round cricketer of his time, indeed all time. They do not tell the whole story of his remarkable endurance.

His first 85 Tests were in succession; no one had ever had such an unbroken sequence. He is adamant that he never left the field, not once, in any of them. In addition to West Indies and Barbados, he had three stints with South Australia (where he became the first player to complete the double of 1000 runs and 50 wickets in an Australian season), with English county Nottinghamshire for seven years, and with clubs in the Lancashire League. He captained Rest of the World teams against England and Australia.

At the height of Sobers' preeminence in the 1966 series in England, the renowned English writer Sir Neville Cardus contended that he was "even more famous than Bradman ever was, for he is accomplished in every form of the game and has exhibited his genius in all climes and conditions".

On the Saturday of the final Test of the memorable 1960-61 "tied Test" series, the temperature at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was as roasting as it was at the recent Australian Open tennis, where some players were felled by heat stroke. It didn't stop Sobers sending down 22 consecutive eight-ball overs on the day, mostly in his quicker style - and returning for another 19 on the Monday.

Such exhausting facts are even more astonishing given his legendary enjoyment of life, a capacity I marvelled at during several nights on tour in his company. He was never concerned that it would affect his game. It was his way of relaxation. Cooped up in his room, he said, would unnecessarily get him worried about the cricket. To each his own; his justification is in the record books.

And what about keeping as fit as he did? Certainly gym work and personal trainers were hardly known during his time.

"I used to swim a lot. I used to live at the beach. I used to play a lot of beach cricket. I played cricket every day," he said. "There was tennis and other sports [he represented Barbados at soccer and basketball even before he did at cricket]. I got myself fit because I knew how fit you had to be to be at your best for five days of a Test match and not leave the field."

As we marvel at the action, athleticism and all-round ability of the players in the current World T20 in Bangladesh, it is not difficult to imagine how Sobers' talent would have flourished in the abbreviated formats that came along after he had swapped the cricket field for the golf course, a place where he habitually indulges what has long been a passion. It is another sport that he has inevitably mastered.

Now 77, the passing years have generally treated him kindly. He has been technical consultant to the West Indies team and advisor to the team's sponsor. For the past three decades, his global fame has made him the ideal ambassador for Barbados tourism, the island's economic mainstay.

The hilarity heard from the boxes at Kensington Oval, where he and several of his old mates gathered for West Indies' three T20 matches against England last month suggested a kindling of happy memories.

The memories will also feature on Sunday for those of us lucky enough to have experienced the Sobers magic during our lifetime.

St John's, Antigua - Day 3 of Round 5 of the Regional 4-Day tournament moves into high gear as three teams dominate over their opponents and the other three have it all to do to rescue this round.

The day starts at 10am Eastern Caribbean Time in Grenada where Devon Smith's unbeaten half-century is leading the Windward Islands to a big second innings lead against the Leeward Islands. On Day 2, the Windwards wracked up a 119-run first innings lead and ended the day on 135/3, with Smith not out on 76. The overall lead is at 254 runs heading into Day 3.

An hour later in Jamaica, the hosts will have to bat well if they are to avoid Barbados taking a big lead in the first innings. Shane Dowrich's century on Day 2, which followed Kirk Edwards' on Day 1, helped Barbados pile on 423 runs in their first innings. Jamaica were 150/4 at Stumps on Day 2, still trailing Barbados' first innings score by 273 runs.

Finally, across in T&T, Jason Mohammed's double ton on Day 2 along with a flurry of late wickets from spinner, Imran Khan, has set T&T on course in their pursuit of victory over the Combined Campuses & Colleges. T&T declared their first innings on 451/8 before leaving CCC reeling at 142/8 at Stumps on Day 2. The College Students are still 309 runs off T&T's score. Day 3 starts at 3pm Eastern Caribbean Time.

St John's, Antigua - The fourth day serves up two matches that go into the last day of Round 5 of the Regional 4-Day Tournament.

The Windward Islands defeated the Leeward Islands by a mammoth 197-runs on Day 3 to move to the top of the 4-Day table. However, four teams are still in battle in Kingston and in Port of Spain.

At 11am Eastern Caribbean Time, Jamaica and Barbados will resume their match in what promises to be an exciting final day. Barbados, after deciding not to enforce the follow-on on Day 3, are 162/2 in their second innings - an overall lead of 381 runs.

In Port of Spain, things are slightly less exciting as hosts, Trinidad & Tobago require just 24 runs to defeat the Combined Campuses & Colleges. Despite Shacaya Thomas' second First Class century on Day 3, T&T bowled out CCC for 330. The visitors trailed by 307 runs.

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Carlton Juniors are the new champions of the Inspire Sports/National Sport Council Under-13 competition.

They captured their first title today with a 19-run win over Fusionz Boutique Passage United in a low-scoring encounter at Bank Hall.

It was Carlton Juniors’ third attempt at taking the top prize. They previously lost both finals to rivals Passage United. Meanwhile, it was the third consecutive loss for Passage United who won the championship in the first three years.

Set a modest 115 to win from 35 overs, Passage United were dismissed for 95 in 22.5 overs.

Player-of-the-Match Amari Waithe followed up his invaluable knock of 22, with three for 23 from his seven overs with his off-breaks.

Left -arm spinner Vashdeo Persaud claimed five for 17 from five overs as Carlton Juniors were limited to 114 for nine after being sent in.

Kingston, Jamaica, CMC – Red hot Barbados marched to their second straight win of the Regional Four-Day Championship when they hammered Jamaica by 245 runs, on the final day of their fifth round contest here Monday.

After declaring at their overnight 162 for two and setting the Jamaicans a massive 382 for victory, Barbados bundled the hosts out for 136 late in the evening, to maintain their winning momentum in the competition.

Once again, the Barbadian spinners were at the forefront of the attack, with left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn picking up three for 30 while off-spinner Ashley Nurse finished with three for 40.

Seamers Carlos Brathwaite (2-9) and Jason Holder (2-16) claimed two wickets apiece.

Jamie Merchant top scored with 37 with four fours and a six off 80 balls but no other batsman passed 15.

Barbados started strongly when West Indies pacer Holder knocked over both openers, John Campbell (2) and Jon-Ros Campbell (4) cheaply to reduce Jamaica to 26 for two in just the tenth over of the innings.

Wickets tumbled regularly leaving Jamaica on the brink of total collapse at 64 for six before Merchant and Nikita Miller (15) held up Barbados with a defiant seventh stand of 50.

Once the partnership was broken, however, not even an 85-minute break for rain could save the Jamaicans, as they lost their last four wickets for 22 runs.

Tony Cozier’s TV commentary stymied

Trinidad & Tobago Newsday article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - This is part four of a series about the life and times of one of cricket’s most famous commentator and writer, Tony Cozier.

During the recent NAGICO Super50 Tournament held here in the twin-island republic, as well as the home series against England, Cozier’s voice was conspicuously absent from the television commentary panel.

He has been involved in every home series since the 1990 visit of England, with the exception of the 2012 encounter against New Zealand when he was absent due to health reasons.

But the Mumbai, India-based Ten Sports won the rights to broadcast the West Indies home series last year.

“I worked all the way through but I’m not too sure what the position is here because this tournament (NAGICO Super50) I was written by HAS, who was contracted by the West Indies Board to do this tournament,” Cozier related. “HAS contacted me and said they’ll like me to do this tournament. They gave me terms, I accepted and everything.”

He continued, “I was all ready for that (but) then HAS then called me and said “well look, the Board has withdrawn your name, they said they wanted a broader mix of commentators rather than all Barbadians.”

But now I see there are three Trinidadians (Ian Bishop, Fazeer Mohammed and Daren Ganga) in the panel so I don’t know what that is all about. I think possibly it has to do with if I criticised them.

“It happened before about six years ago with Tony Deyal, he was the man in charge of the corporate matters for the Board (when) Julian Hunte was in charge. He then e-mailed IMG and said me and Ian Bishop should call the CEO, who was Donald Peters because they had issues with us. I called Peters and Peters didn’t seem to know what he was talking about.

“(Deyal) used to be very abusive, he was very — almost dictatorial. We then said “okay fine.” He e-mailed IMG back and said “I understand that Cozier has spoken to Donald Peters but I’ll be monitoring the broadcast very closely. And if he continues with his caustic (style) on one side, we’ll ask you to take him off.” That may be a similar thing with this situation. I just tell it as it is really, as I see it, my point of view.”

Cozier did radio commentary for the NAGICO Super50 with the Caribbean Super Station and the England tour for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

“I still write a lot for Cricketer Magazine (and) Wisden Cricketer Almanac,” he said. “I do quite a bit of writing and magazines. The company which I have has always put out the Tour Guides (for WI home series). My son Craig looks after all of that. He also was a producer with IMG and he’s done cricket, but now he’s in India doing hockey. That’s where we stand.”

However, Cozier could not help but touch on the declining fortunes of WI cricket, on and off the field.

“To see West Indies now as they have become, down in the bottom, struggling, an administration which is entirely inefficient, if not incompetent, and that has a lot to answer for,” he said.

“The fact that the Players Association is so belligerent, calling three strikes for what! What effect do those strikes have now except to bring the West Indies cricket team down. They were negative. I think we’re the only country in the world where couldn’t field teams three times because the Players Association called a strike. They and the Board were at loggerheads, always fighting each other.

“As soon as you get a house divided against itself, and they were integral parts of West Indies cricket, the players and the Board, and they were always fighting against each other, what you expect? What you expect is what we have on the field now which is really mediocrity, an absolute irrelevance in world cricket.”
