By CMC.

LONDON, England – Out-of-favour West Indies left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn will turn out for the Lashings All-stars World XI in the upcoming season, the club has confirmed.

The beanpole 32-year-old will play 12 matches and will also appear in a special charity match to be played at Harlow Town Cricket Club on June 27.

“I can though confirm that West Indian spinner Sulieman Benn will be appearing for the All-stars,” said Lashings chief James Lashings.

“Sulieman played 17 Tests and 20 One Day Internationals for his country and will be with us for the start of the season and finish his stint with us at Eynsford on 6th July, playing in 12 games.

“As always we can never 100 per cent guarantee who will be appearing but barring an emergency, Suli will be at those 12 games as he is only flying in to the UK to play for us.”

Benn is the latest in a long line of West Indies players to turn out for the popular English cricket club. In the past, Lashings have boasted the likes of Sir Richie Richardson, Courtney Walsh, Gordon Greenidge and Brian Lara.

Benn last played for West Indies three years ago and is currently representing Barbados in the WICB Regional Four-Day Championship.

President's interview with Midweek Sport

Barbados Nation article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is embarking on plans, specifically professional structures, that will give the Caribbean much needed viability and marketing power.

President Whycliffe “Dave” Cameron, in an exclusive interview with MIDWEEK SPORT, said that anouncements to this effect would be made following a board meeting slated for Trinidad and Tobago this week.

“We have done well in the shorter formats such as the T20 but not so well in the Test arena. What we need to do to take us to the next level in cricket is to set up professional structures, and that is what we are moving towards.

“I will be able to say more on this issue following the board’s [annual general meeting] in Trinidad and Tobago,” he said.

Speaking at Kensington Oval at the end of the successful T20 series between West Indies and England, Cameron said it was important the West Indies improve their profile and stature in Test cricket.

“We in the board certainly believe that our value in cricket is based on our Test status and so while we enjoy the Twenty20 because it brings revenue, and new audiences to the game, we are still focused on being the best Test team.

“If the West Indies can be a force again in the Test arena, I would feel that strides have been made under my tenure. The plan is clearly to get us back to the top, not just the top three, but number one,” he said.

The charismatic Jamaican, who took over the leadership of the WICB in March of 2013, was in no doubt that the West Indies would be the team that all others had to fear most at this month’s World T20 tournament in Bangladesh, which started on Sunday.

“We have got the most dangerous players in this format of the game. In that opening match at Kensington Oval against England, we lost three wickets and had another four players match winners that didn’t bat. I am excited about our chances.

“We saw what Ramdin did recently in Antigua and that tells the depth of our batting. The boys are ready and I am confident about the team’s chances,” he said.

The 43-year-old Cameron is happy with the balance of the side.

“Narine and Badree are quality spinners, and we know how important the two of them will be in Bangladesh on those slow pitches.

“We have a very balanced team going to Bangladesh that will be prepared for the conditions out there. We are focused and I expect the team to to very well,” he said.

The West Indies are fifth in the world T20 rankings, but Cameron is not too worried about that. The WICB president said logistics meant that it had not always been possible for them to field their best T20 side in some tournaments.

“What has happened, and many persons have not really focused on it, is that each series we have played T20 is either a one-off or two matches.

“A lot of them we have played away from home and so we have not been able to afford to make the change from the 50-over side into a specialist 20-over team.

“What we have been using is a hybrid of T20 game players to play the T20 game. Now we have the T20 squad properly assembled, it is going to make a big difference.

“Take Dwayne Smith, for example. He has been busy plying his trade all around the world, but we now have him and that means a lot,” he added.

West Indies are in Group 2 in the 16-team tournament and are pooled alongside India, Australia, Pakistan and one of the qualifiers.

Following the completion of the first round which comprises Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and minnows Afghanistan, Ireland, Nepal, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong and Netherlands, the two zone winners will progress to the second round and join the eight established countries for the Super 10 series.

The second round and the first major clash of the tournament is on Friday when India meet arch-rivals Pakistan.

Regional 4-Day Tournament Round 4

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Leaders Jamaica will return to action this weekend on home soil, where they will face Windward Islands in the fourth round of the Regional 4-Day Tournament, starting on Friday at Sabina Park in Kingston.

The Jamaicans will be looking to continue their dominance over the Windwards since the turn of the century, having won eight of the 17 matches contested during that period.

This includes three wins in the last four matches, but the Windwards will take heart in the knowledge that they have won in their opponents’ backyard as recently as five years ago, when they earned a hard-fought, three-wicket victory at the Trelawny Multiplex.

In a rare occurrence, the island of Barbados will host two matches this week, starting five hours apart.

National team Barbados – under the leadership of Test opener Kraigg Brathwaite – will host long-standing sports rivals Trinidad & Tobago at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown in a day-time fixture.

A few kilometres north, Combined Campuses & Colleges, which is domiciled at the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies, will tackle Guyana under the lights at the Three Ws Oval.

The rivalry between Barbados and T&T dates back to the foundations of the game in the region, but the hosts have an enviable record against the two-island republic in this format, including four straight victories in the last two years.

T&T however, are fresh from two confidence-boosting victories against Windward and Leeward Islands, and a few of their players have now had the experience of playing in their opponents’ club competition, so they should be fairly familiar with the opposition, if not entirely the conditions.

In the bottom-of-the-table clash, both CCC and Guyana will be looking to earn their first victory of the season – and both have reason to feel confident against each other.

CCC have not lost any of the three previous home matches they have played against the Guyanese, who will be looking to extend their winning streak against their hosts to three straight.

Small stars as Celebrities beat Barbados Blind by six runs to square series 1-1

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - In the second warm-up practice match as the Barbados Blind Cricket Association (BBCA) completes its preparations before journeying to Guyana to compete in the Regional Blind Tournament from March 30 to April 7, they lost by six runs to the Celebrities X1 in a thrilling finish.

Playing at Desmond Haynes Oval, the Celebrities X1 amassed a whopping 177 for three off their 25 overs after they were sent in.

The topscore, ironically came from Danielle Small, the Assistant Coach of the Blind Cricketers, who hit an enterprising, unbeaten 55 off 65 balls including three fours.

Former Barbados and West Indies Women's player Pamela Lavine made 42 not off 60 balls with one boundary in a 122-run partnership with Small.

The opening pair of Dominic Drakes and Charlene Taitt took the score to 32 before Taitt was out lbw to Anthony Cummins B1 (totally blind) in the 4th over.

Small then came in to partner Drakes but a mix-up between saw Drakes losing his wicket 17 runs later via the run out route in the fifth over.

Jason King, playing in his first Blind game joined Small and was the last wicket to fall being brilliantly bowled by Tremaine Forte B3 (sighted player) for five with the score on 55.

In their turn at the crease the BBCA scored 171 for seven off their 25 overs.

Small was also brilliant in the field as she was involved in three of the five run outs which plagued the BBCA. Opening with John Reeves B3 and Anthony Cummins B1, Reeves was the first of Small’s victims being run out for nine with the score on 19.

Ten runs later Cummins B1 (totally blind) was Small’s second victim scoring 16 with one six. Mark Goddard B2 (partially sighted) was also run out 18 runs later by Taitt for 29 which included two fours.

Ricardo Manning B2 (partially sighted) came in to partner Granville Carter B1 and tried to steady the ship, but Carter became the 4th victim, bowled by Mark Seale for nought with the score on 96 in the 16th over.

With just under nine overs to go and another 81 runs to get, captain Halden Forde B3 came to the crease and he and Manning put together a 41-run partnership before Manning was lbw by Drakes for 32 of 41 balls which included two fours.

And just as you thought the run-out disease was nipped in the bud, Tremaine Forte 11, through a direct hit became Small’s last victim with the score on 156-6 in the 24th over.

Needing just 15 runs to win and captain Forde still at the crease, there was still some hope for the BBCA as he was joined by Kci Ward-Ryan, and, together in some sensible batting they took the score to 171 before Forde, too, was run out for 36 off 28 balls which included two fours on the last ball of the 25th over.

Phillips, Dowrich give Bim solid start

Bridgetown, Barbados, CMC – Half-centuries from left-hander Omar Phillips and wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich, led a steady Barbados batting effort on the opening day of their fourth round clash with Trinidad and Tobago.

At the close at Kensington Oval, the hosts were 243 for five after earlier winning the toss and choosing to bat first in the Regional Four-Day, fourth round contest.

Phillips, who played two Tests for West Indies during a players’ strike five years ago, top scored with 67 while Dowrich was unbeaten on exactly 50.

Left-hander Jonathan Carter chipped in with 45 while West Indies batsman Kirk Edwards got 41, to provide support for Barbados as they kept T&T in the field all day.

Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, with two for 33, and leg-spinner Imran Khan, two for 68, have been the most successful bowlers.

Barbados had a shaky start, when their captain Kraigg Brathwaite missed a full length delivery from Gabriel and was leg before wicket without scoring in the day’s third over, without a run on the board.

However, Phillips and Edwards then added 73 for the second wicket, to take Barbados to lunch in a solid position. Phillips faced 157 balls in a shade under four hours at the crease and struck 11 fours while Edwards was at the crease for 77 balls and 112 minutes, and registered three fours and a six.

Barbados suffered a setback in the second over after lunch when Edwards was bowled by Gabriel, without addition to the score.

Phillips and Carter then buckled down in an 82-run third wicket stand after lunch to keep T&T’s bowlers at bay. Dropped on 42 by Adrian Barath off Gabriel, Phillips brought up his 11th first class half-century before finally falling on the stroke of tea, caught close-in by Barath off Khan at 155 for three.

Three overs later into the final session with just nine runs added, Carter followed when he was lbw to Khan, after counting five fours and a six off 112 balls in just over two hours at the crease.

Roston Chase (12) put on another 38 for the fifth wicket with Dowrich before nicking Khan behind but Carlos Brathwaite arrived at the crease to help see Barbados to the close, in an unbroken 41-run, sixth wicket stand.

Dowrich has so far batted 88 balls and 111 minutes, and hit seven fours.

Bridgetown, Barbados, CMC – Maiden first class centuries from Ashley Nurse and Carlos Brathwaite, followed by a devastating bowling performance from Barbados, combined to destroy Trinidad and Tobago on the second day of their fourth round encounter in the Regional Four-Day Championship here Saturday.

Nurse slammed 130 not out while Brathwaite got 109 as Barbados, resuming the day on 243 for five, racked up 479 for eight declared, in a sensational batting display at Kensington Oval.

Brathwaite then returned with the ball to snap up three for 15 from seven overs, supporting left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn who claimed four for 31, as T&T crashed to 120 all out in reply.

Jason Mohammed top scored with 43 and captain Rayad Emrit finished on 25 not out, to be two of only three T&T players in double figures.

Following on by 359 runs, Trinidad and Tobago fared better in their second innings, reaching 44 without loss at the close, with Evin Lewis unbeaten on 37.

The day belonged to Nurse and Brathwaite who batted superbly to put Barbados in control of the encounter.

Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich added just three to his overnight 50 before departing with the score on 284, but this paved the way for Brathwaite and Nurse as they proceeded to add 190 for the eighth wicket.

Nurse cracked 16 fours and four sixes off just 111 balls in a whirlwind knock while Brathwaite faced 136 deliveries in 215 minutes at the crease, and counted six fours and two sixes.

The pair took Barbados to lunch at 427 for seven, with Nurse on 99 and Brathwaite on 90, before both completed their milestones after the break.

Nurse was first to the mark, raising three figures off 85 balls and Brathwaite followed soon afterward, turning leg-spinner Imran Khan to square leg for a single to reach his century off 128 balls.

Once Brathwaite fell, becoming Jason Mohammed’s second wicket, Barbados declared their innings.

Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel finished with four for 69, Mohammed two for 61 and Imran Khan, two for 132.

In reply, T&T then marched to 32 without loss but the innings went into decline once the new ball pair of Jason Holder and Miguel Cummins were replaced by Brathwaite and Benn.

Adrian Barath was first to fall, taken at second slip by Nurse off Brathwaite for 20 and Lewis (5) found himself short of his ground, run out by good work by Jonathan Carter, with just one added to the total.

Brathwaite then threw the innings into turmoil when he got the prized wicket of Darren Bravo for four, caught behind cutting and then removed Jonathan Augustus lbw next ball without scoring, to leave T&T on 45 for four at tea.

Benn took charge after the break, ripping through the T&T middle order and only Mohammed, in a counter-attacking knock, showed any real resistance.

Mohammed hit eight fours and a six off 64 balls before he was eighth out to Benn at 90 for eight and Emrit then ensured T&T passed the 100-run mark, with a breezy 16-ball knock that included two fours and two sixes.

Major changes made in regional structure

Trinidad Express article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - Contracted players in every territory. An extended first-class season starting in November.

These are some of the recommendations from the director of cricket Richard Pybus which were approved by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) as part of the Board’s effort to professionalise the game at first-class level.

Pybus, speaking at a WICB press conference at Hyatt Regency Trinidad in Port of Spain yesterday, said the WICB was looking for a full professionalisation of the game at first-class level, with each territorial board contracting 15 players for an extended season.

Pybus said the regional boards will be getting grant funding from the WICB to be able to roll out the teams as “proper professional entities”.

“The requirements of the WICB in the agreement with the territorial boards will be that each territory will contract 15 players with different pay scales. It will mean putting professional staff around the players,” Pybus added.

“It was a critical day in West Indies cricket bearing in mind that it has been very difficult historically for West Indian cricketers to be able to make a living without going overseas.

“I want to commend the Board for their courage of conviction to move the game forward in the region,” said Pybus.

He explained that with the new structure, there will be 90 contracted players in the region and from those, the regional selectors will choose 15 who will make up the West Indies A squad which will now be based and trained at the High Performance Centre.

“We want to make sure we are creating greater competition for spots in the West Indies international side,” he added.

WICB president Dave Cameron said the extended season will start in November this year and will see teams play each other on a home-and-away basis. The season will end in April next year.

He also noted that the regional 50-over competition will be extended and the changes will provide players with more opportunities to get experience, accumulate runs and wickets so they can stake a claim for a spot in the regional side.

“This will allow regional cricketers more opportunities to practise their trade and ensure they are in competitive mode for a longer season,” Cameron added.

The WICB also want to see better management and administration of the game at the territorial board level.

Cameron said the WICB has approved a decision to significantly restructure the management and operations of cricket which will impact how cricket is managed and administered at the territorial board level.

In a separate matter, Cameron also noted that the WICB currently has no outstanding matters with the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) in court.

“You will remember a very major lawsuit against West Indies cricket somewhere in the region of US$20 million for restraint of trade. Through discussions we have been able to negotiate away that threat and again we want to thank WIPA and the entire organisation for that,” Cameron added.

T&T roll over tamely as Barbados win big

Bridgetown, Barbados, CMC – Barbados crushed archrivals Trinidad and Tobago by an innings and 60 runs inside three days, to make a bold statement in the Regional Four-Day Championship here Sunday.

Spinners Ashley Nurse and Sulieman Benn shared eight wickets as T&T, resuming the day on 44 without loss in their second innings following on, were bundled out for 199, 40 minutes before tea on the penultimate day of their fourth round match at Kensington Oval.

Nurse claimed four for 64 and Benn, four for 66, as T&T lost ten wickets for 155 runs in just under two sessions, to surrender meekly.

Evin Lewis converted his overnight unbeaten 37 into a top score of 61 while captain Rayad Emrit got 30, Adrian Barath 26 and wicketkeeper Steven Katwaroo, 25, but the first innings deficit of 359 proved too daunting.

Champion batsman Darren Bravo failed for the second time in the game, following up his first innings for with just 19.

The victory, set up by a first innings total of 479 for eight declared, handed Barbados 19 points while T&T walked away with just two.

Openers Lewis reached his second first class half-century as he and Barath extended their partnership to 66, before being separated. The left-handed Lewis was first to fall when he missed a forward defensive prod at Benn and was lbw, after facing 68 balls in 68 minutes, and striking nine fours and three sixes.

There was no sign of tragedy when Barath and Bravo added a further 38 for the second innings, to push T&T up to 104 for one in the second hour of play.

However, things fell apart quickly when Bravo cut seamer Jason Holder to backward point and three overs later, Barath followed to a catch at the wicket off Benn, after facing 107 balls in two hours and seven minutes at the crease.

When Jason Mohammed was caught at leg slip by Jonathan Carter off Nurse for two, T&T were in strife at 114 for four, having lost three wickets for ten runs in the space of six overs.

Emrit and Katwaroo held up Barbados’s charge with a 40-run fifth wicket stand, which took T&T to lunch at 138 for four.

However, the floodgates opened in the second session once Augustus was held at the wicket off Benn for 14. Emrit, who struck three fours and a six off just 34 balls, was held at cover by Omar Phillips off seamer Carlos Brathwaite at 158 for six, as T&T lost their last six wickets for 45 runs.

Bridgetown, Barbados - For the second straight season, defending champions Foundation 'A' Old Scholars and Alleyne Alumni will clash in the final of the Christ Church Foundation School Joel Garner Twenty20 tapeball tournament.

In the presence of big crowd at Church Hill on Friday night, Alleyne, desperate for their first title in what will now be their third final, demolished Combermere Old Scholars by 85 runs, while Foundation 'A' defeated the 2011 champions RG Plumbing Coleridge & Parry Old Scholars by 33 runs.

Spurred by half-centuries from former Barbados batsman Randy Thomas and Kemar Smith, Alleyne scored 138 for five off 20 overs after winning the toss.

Opener Thomas, captain of the BCA Sagicor General Super Cup champions LIME, topscored with 53 off 49 balls including six fours, while Smith, a brother of Barbados and West Indies all-rounder, Dwayne Smith, made an unbeaten 50 off 40 balls with five boundaries.

The pair added 73 in 9.5 overs for the third wicket.

Fast bowler Khalid Springer took three for 19 off four overs.

Combermere, seeking their first final, were then jolted by a combination of fast-medium bowling from Jamoe Carrington and skipper Kenrick Marshall as they tumbled to 53 all out in 11.2 overs. Six batsmen were leg before wicket.

Only Devon Goodman, with 30 off 22 balls including five fours and one six at No. 6, reached double figures.

Carrington, operating from the northern end, took five for 15 off four overs to duly capture the Baron's Smokehouse $100 Player-of-the-Match award, while Marshall picked up three for 20, also off four overs.

Foundation 'A' made 109 for five off 20 overs after they, too, won the toss.

Amory Holder topscored with 33 not out off 30 balls, striking three fours and two sixes to earn the Baron's Smokehouse $100 Player-of-the-Match prize. Opener Ricardo Yearwood made 29 off 35 balls and Dwight Carter, 11.

Studded with four pacers including West Indies Under-19 team players Jerome Jones and Jofra Archer, along with off-spinner and skipper Michael Matthews, Foundation 'A' had Coleridge & Parry reeling on 52 for eight by the 12th over before they rallied to 76 all out in 17.5 overs.

Seven batsmen were bowled.

Shane Parris was the only double-figure contributor with 18 not out at No. 7.

Matthews, Damien Farley, Jones and left-armer Michael Holder each took two wickets for ten, 12, 15 and 18 runs respectively.

The final is scheduled for Friday, March 28 at Church Hill.

Match winner Dottin - Give me the ball

WICB Media Release.

SYLHET, Bangladesh – Deandra Dottin starred with the ball as West Indies Women beat England to make a winning start to the ICC Women’s World T20 tournament on Monday afternoon at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

The 22-year-old seam bowler had the outstanding figures of four wickets for 12 runs from four overs including a maiden. It was the best figures of her T20 International career.

Overall Dottin accounted for five wickets – two bowled, one lbw, one caught behind, and the other run out. Her heroics helped to restrict England to 124-9 off their 20 overs, and handed West Indies victory by nine runs.

Batting first, the Windies made 133-7 off 20 overs. This was due mainly to an opening partnership of 87 between left-hander Kycia Knight (43) and world Number 1 batter Stafanie Taylor (56).

Speaking after the match, captain Merissa Aguilleira said she was delighted with the team’s performance and said it was a good start to the tournament.

“It was a really fantastic bowling performance from Deandra. She did not do a lot with the bat earlier today but when we went onto the field she looked at me and said ‘captain, give me the ball’.

“I could see in her eyes that it was her day and she was totally focussed on winning the match for us. This was a really big performance from her and I want to congratulate her on bowling the team to victory today,” Aguilleira told WICB Media.

“We came out with a plan. England were on top of their game and started really well but we had faith that we could pull it back. Deandra came in at the right time and finished them off for us. Everyone else chipped in and it was a good team effort.

“We were looking at more runs when we batted. We got a great start from the openers – Stafanie continues to show why she’s best in the world, and Kycia played some big shots to get us going. We faltered a bit in the middle but we made up for that in the field. It wasn’t the perfect start to the tournament – we know we can play even better – but we wanted a win at the start and that is exactly what we got.”

West Indies will have a full training session on Tuesday at the Sylhet District Stadium. Their next match on Wednesday is against host nation Bangladesh at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. First ball is 3:30 pm (5:30 am Eastern Caribbean Time/4:30 am Jamaica Time).
