Kingston, Jamaica - The St. Michael School has hundreds of alumni that they are proud of and Jason Holder is one of them.
As part of the school’s 87th anniversary celebrations, a reception was held in Holder’s honour at the Martindale’s Road institution last Thursday. Holder entered the school at the third form level after being transferred from the now defunct Louis Lynch Secondary School.
Just last year, Holder was appointed as the West Indies One-Day International Captain, the youngest ever captain in West Indies’ history. He was also instrumental in helping the West Indies to draw the recently ended Test series against England.
A number of former Barbados and West Indies cricketers attended the reception, including Barbados Cricket Association President Joel Garner, who gave a short speech praising Holder for his performances for the regional outfit thus far.
The articulate Holder noted that he didn’t think that he would have been showered with so much appreciation for what he has done in his short career thus far.
“It is very good to see the young players that played with me during my school days here. One thing I always tried to do with the youngsters is try to pull them up, put them on the right path and
encourage them to do great things.
“I stand here tonight because for me it is all about belief. A lot of people in cricket want personal glory, but they don’t want to work for it; they don’t have that inner belief. I think belief begins within and I think the more people we get to believe within, the better cricketers we will produce,” said Holder.
On display at the back of the hall at the St. Michael School is a small exhibit with photos of Holder from his school days right up to now he is playing for the West Indies. Also on display are some pieces of memorabilia he has signed.
