Holder turns attention to the greens

Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - The list of Caribbean cricketers who have taken their best shots and drives to the golf course is getting longer.

West Indies ODI captain Jason Holder is among the latest batch of cricketers to transfer their skills to the fairways and greens, and, along with coach Phil Simmons and physio CJ Clark, is among those competing in the 2015 Massy United Insurance Barbados Open.

The three are guests of the BGA and sponsors Massy United Insurance, and enjoyed the second day of the tournament on a rain-affected day at Apes Hill.

They will be action again today at Royal Westmoreland where Holder, who has shown great improvement over the past 18 months, is among the contenders for a podium finish in the Men’s second flight, based on his stableford points.

Playing with a 20 handicap, Holder impressed spectators with his shot-making while registering an 86 yesterday for 42 points.

Simmons, who noted that he has not been playing regularly in recent years, was somewhat off the pace on the expansive and challenging Apes Hill course.

Clark, who was among the leaders in the Men’s first flight on Friday, shot 97 yesterday and remains among the top three going into the final day today.

“I enjoy golf a lot. It is a really good pastime which can allow you to escape and change your focus,” said Holder.

Brathwaites hit centuries as Kraigg is first to 500 runs in Series 5 of Elite division Championship

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Contrasting centuries by the unrelated Brathwaites, Kraigg and Carlos, highlighted the second day's play of Series 5 matches in the BCA Elite division Championship.

In typically, solid style, West Indies Test opener Kraigg Brathwaite became the first batsman to score 500 runs as well as three centuries for the season as he guided CounterPoint Wanderers to first innings lead over Sierka Rentals Maple with an unbeaten 172 at Dayrells Road.

The 22-year-old Wanderers captain now has 591 runs at an average of 147.75. He also made 172 not out off BDFSP to record the first hundred of the season and hit an unbeaten 162 against ESA Field Pickwick, the first hundred of Series 2 as well - both on home turf, too.

Kraigg Brathwaite's ninth century at this level came in 202 minutes off 166 balls with 16 fours. By stumps, he had batted for 298 minutes, faced 238 balls and struck 24 boundaries as Wanderers reached 327 for five in reply to Maple's first innings of 267 all out after starting the day on 27 for two. Brathwaite was then on 14.

This is the second time Kraigg Brathwaite has made three centuries and also over 500 runs in a season. In 2009, he amassed 910 runs (ave: 70.00) with a career-best 222 not out for Guardian General Barbados Youth against LIME at Lester Vaughan, Cane Garden (Series 10) when it was a 16-man Competition.

And mind you, five of his centuries are over 150.

Dramatic best sums up a whirlwind, career-best 143 not out by all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite on his return to his old club Massy United Insurance Wildey who are in a relatively good position to force a win against Massy Stores Spartan at Queen's Park.

Drafted in for his first match of the season at the start of the day's play for wicket-keeper/batsman Mario Albert, who is on national football duties overseas, Carlos Brathwaite smashed one of the fastest centuries in the Championship, taking just 65 balls in 80 minutes with six fours and nine sixes.

And when Wildey declared at 317 for eight off 66 overs at tea from an overweek 120 for three - a first innings lead of 195 - he had counted nine fours and 12 sixes in his 93-ball innings, which came in a shade under two hours.

Spartan were putting up a fight in the second innings, closing on 153 for three.

It was the fourth century at this level for the 27-year-old Carlos Brathwaite and his first in four seasons. His previous hundred was 132, also for the same club (then named Banks and subsequently renamed Banks Wildey and Wildey) and against Spartan as well, in the second innings of Round 2 at The Brewery in 2011 - the last year the Championship was officially called Division 1.

Banks were demoted after the 2011 season until their return to the top league this year, and Carlos Brathwaite spent the intervening seasons with Sagicor Life UWI.

Two bowlers - left-arm pacer Adeko Collymore of Pickwick and off-spinner Alcindo Holder of front-runners Brathwaite Construction/Crane Resort St. Catherine - both recorded their first ever five-wicket hauls.

Collymore snatched five for 18 off 15 overs to help spur struggling Pickwick to a commanding 167-run first innings lead over rock-bottom Barbados Youth at Foursquare Oval, while Holder, better known as a hard-hitting batsman, undermined his former ICBL Empire club-mates with five for 45 off 18.4 overs as the title holders were led on first innings by 119 at Bayfield.

With St. Catherine closing their second innings on 98 for two for an overall lead of 222 going into the third and final day, Empire will be under tremendous pressure to avoid a third consecutive defeat.

In the other match, title-chasing UWI remain in a strong position to defeat BDFSP at Paragon.

After conceding a big first innings lead of 233 by crumbling for 120 from an overweek 12 for two and forced to follow-on, BDFSP showed much more fight by closing on 181 for four but they will have to bat well into the last session to avoid defeat.

Yet another Brathwaite, Kemar, had personal satisfaction.

With a knock of 60 in the BDFSP second innings, 21-year-old opener Kemar Brathwaite carried his aggregate for the season to 421 including two centuries (ave: 46.77).

It is the first time Kemar Brathwaite has made over 400 runs in what is now his seventh straight season. He represented Barbados Youth from 2009 to 2012 and the now demoted LIME in the previous two seasons.

Rain, which fell heavily just after the close of play, could be a key factor in the outcome of all matches.

(NB: Also see summarised scores).

Bishop bags all ten wickets as St. Catherine crush Empire in Elite division Championship

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Veteran left-arm spinner Derick Bishop became the first bowler in 22 years to take all ten wickets in an innings in the top BCA league Championship as he spurred front-runners Brathwaite Construction/Crane Resort St. Catherine to a commanding 160-run win over now wretched Elite division title holders ICBL Empire on a remarkable third and final day of Series 5.

Bishop's treasured Bayfield ground turned into a scene of wild celebrations after he grabbed ten for 24 off 16.4 consecutive overs for a match haul of 13 for 91 off 40.4 overs to become the first bowler for the season to record 50 wickets, pushing his tally to 53 at 11.88 runs apiece.

It is the tenth time in 15 successive seasons at this level that the 31-year-old Bishop has captured over 50 wickets.

In the previous series, Bishop had a match haul of 15 for 141 including nine for 59 in the second innings against ESA Field Pickwick, also at Bayfield. It was the first time he had taken nine wickets in an innings.

Kenrick Marshall, the outstanding, former Police fast bowling all-rounder, was the previous bowler to snatch all ten wickets in an innings in 1993 against Combined Schools North at St. James Secondary.

Marshall took ten for ten in the first innings and ended with match figures of 16 for 38 (still the best in the last three-and-a-half decades) as Police won by 82 runs in a 10th series First division match.

The Championship was rebranded from Division 1 to Elite in 2012 and contested by ten teams since then.

Inclement weather, which delayed the start of play by 75 minutes and then sliced a further 80 minutes after tea, would have provided a challenge for the bearded, diminutive Bishop. But he bemused the batsmen with flight and guile from the Neville Mason end at the north.

The effect was that Empire, set 223 to win, initially in 57 overs, crashed for 62 in 33.4 overs to suffer a third straight defeat, which is unprecedented for a Bank Hall team for sure in the last three-and-a-half decades.

Empire's indisciplined batting fell to a combination of reckless and jittery, defensive strokes. Having limped to 50 for four off 20 overs at tea after St. Catherine declared at their overnight second innings 98 for two, they would have breathed a sigh of relief when it started to rain heavily five minutes before play was scheduled to resume for the last session.

The umpires then called play for 4:20 p.m. and ruled that at least 17 more overs were to be bowled. But the dismissal of aggressive left-hander Shaquille Cumberbatch, caught at short mid-off from a drive for the topscore of 25 off 42 balls with two fours and one six, led to a swift demise as the last six wickets tumbled for nine runs in ten overs.

When victory was achieved at 5:06 p.m. with Ian Perryman counting among four batsmen who were leg before wicket, there were still a minimum of 5.2 overs remaining.

It was St. Catherine's third consecutive win and fourth all told, lifting them to 79 points - nine ahead of second-placed Sagicor Life UWI.

And Omar Phillips' team would be favoured to maintain their top position after the next series as well with their opponents being Guardian General Barbados Youth - at Lester Vaughan ground, Cane Garden - who have lost all of their matches, though exempt from demotion.

In sharp contrast, Empire and long-standing rivals Massy Stores Spartan find themselves both on 39 points in the last four of the Points table as they next clash at Bank Hall, no doubt seeking to ease relegation worries.

All of the other matches produced outright wins as well.

Pickwick were first to the tape, demolishing Barbados Youth by an innings and 69 runs before tea at Foursquare Oval.

UWI swept aside BDFSP by nine wickets at Paragon, CounterPoint Wanderers defeated Sierka Rentals Maple by ten wickets at Dayrells Road and Massy United Insurance Wildey beat Spartan by six wickets at Queen's Park.

BDFSP captain Jameel Stuart hit his third century of the season to become the second batsman to record that number after the Wanderers skipper Kraigg Brathwaite, who carried his overnight 172 to an unbeaten 206.

Left-hander Stuart scored exactly 100 in 104 minutes off 99 balls with eight fours and five sixes and was dismissed one ball after reaching his century in a second innings total of 332 all out after the home side resumed on 181 for four - still in deficit by 52 runs.

In a welcome return to form, leg-spinner Akeem Dewar took seven for 84 off 23 overs.

UWI raced to their target of 100 in 10.2 overs.

Brathwaite's double-century was his second at this level following 222 not out for Barbados Youth against LIME at Cane Garden six years ago.

Wanderers took their overnight 327 for five to 416 for six declared - a first innings lead of 149 - after Kevin McClean, who resumed on 39, was run out for 94.

McClean batted for 96 minutes, faced 83 balls and struck seven fours and four sixes in a 171-run stand with Brathwaite, whose marathon innings lasted for 350 minutes and contained 26 boundaries off 271 balls.

Batting with two players short because of injury, Maple fell for 175 in their second innings as leg-spinner Nikolai Charles picked up five for 54.

Wanderers knocked off their target of 27 in 2.4 overs with Brathwaite scoring 22 not out.

Brathwaite remains the only batsman with over 500 runs for the season and now boasts of an aggregate of 647, at an average of 161.75.

Having been asked to follow-on at the start of the day with a deficit of 167, Barbados Youth were bowled out for 98 in 39.3 overs.

Opener Zachary McCaskie topscored with 37.

Pacer Zahir Motara took three for 20, improving off-spinner Rondelle Yearwood, for many years known as a wicket-keeper/batsman, two for 23 and left-arm fast bowler Adeko Collymore, two for 26.

Wildey, returning to the top division after an absence of three years, continue to impress with their third win.

Facing a first innings deficit of 195, Spartan rallied from an overnight 153 for three to 270 all out.

Nicholas Carter topscored with 70 after resuming on 38.

Left-arm spinner Winston Reid, recalled for his first match in four years at this level at the age of 52, showed that he stills knows how to outfox batsmen as he did en route to an all-time record of 1 568 wickets prior to this season.

Reid took four for 99 for match figures of 11 for 143.

Requiring 76 to win in 21 overs, Wildey triumphed with seven overs to spare, thus remaining in fourth position.

Fast bowler Stefon King took all four wickets for 48 runs.

WICB stages historic Coaches Conference

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – A historic gathering will take place tomorrow in Barbados, when the WICB Professional Cricket League Coaches Conference is convened featuring coaches from each of the six franchises.

For the first time, regional coaches will meet with three key WICB officials – Director of Cricket Richard Pybus, Convenor of the West Indies Selection Panel Clive Lloyd and Head Coach of the West Indies team Phil Simmons – to discuss matters of common interest in the further development of the game at the professional level in the Caribbean.

The coaches attending are: Hendy Springer and Dexter Toppin (Barbados Pride), Esuan Crandon and Rayon Griffith (Guyana Jaguars), Junior Bennett (Jamaica Scorpions), Reginald Benjamin (Leeward Islands Hurricanes), Gus Logie (Trinidad & Tobago Red Force) and Ian Allen (Windward Islands Volcanoes).

“It’s the first sitting of the franchise coaches with us and to get them all aware of what are our common goals as we approach the second season of operation of the PCL,” said Pybus, who will chair the meeting.

“It is very important that they also have the opportunity to share the challenges which they face at the franchise level, as we work together to build a World-class cricket performance system.

Pybus added: “At the end of the day, the goal is for us to be producing international quality players for the West Indies and we need to be able to identify what challenges we face and streamline the system, so that it works efficiently.

“It’s also an opportunity for the coaches to network with fellow coaches and take practical examples back to their franchises, so that we are able to advance West Indies cricket.”

The PCL was introduced last year and ushered in a new era of franchise play drawn from the six territories of the WICB, with the specific goal of giving players the opportunity to produce consistently throughout the season.

Two of the important features of the new league are a longer 4-Day Tournament with each franchise playing 10 matches, the transfer of player talent from territory to territory and the introduction of retainer payments for 15 core players in each of the six franchises.

Simmons said he was looking forward to the conference, where issues of training methodologies, fitness standards and player evaluations will be discussed.

“This is one of the first things for which I asked when I was appointed West Indies head coach, so that we can outline to everybody where we want them to be and where we want the players to be,” said Simmons.

The new PCL 4-Day season is scheduled to start in early November and conclude next March, with the NAGICO Super50 set for next January.

Franklyn Stephenson Academy end inaugural tour of England

Barbados Cricket Association article.

London, England - The Franklyn Stephenson Academy (FSA) concluded its inaugural tour to the UK with the Under 11s finishing second in their section of the West Cricket Festival played at the King's College School Grounds in Taunton, Somerset.

The Under 15s who previously travelled and played in Taunton, Cornwall and Devon, moved on to Suffolk and London along with the Under 11s following their participation in the festival to complete their touring schedule.

In the 10th edition of the West Cricket Festival, the Under 11s were drawn in a pool including a representative ICC Academy team, Wales and the tournament favourites Yorkshire, who had not lost a fixture for two seasons. That the FSA needed a single wicket in the last over of their final round fixture to secure the title was a credit to their preparation and competence.

The Buckinghamshire last wicket pair tenaciously defended the final over to hold on at 111 for 9 after the allotted 30 overs, chasing 150. That over was watched by all and sundry at the festival with the FSA requiring full bowling points to secure the title. They were left to rue the rain abandoned fixture against Yorkshire with the favourites precariously placed at 102 for 7 after 26 overs, as well as an earlier loss to Wales by 5 wicket in a sub-par opening round performance.

That victory ultimately secured the Welsh their first title as they won their low scoring final round encounter against Yorkshire. Those matches apart, there were comfortable victories for the FSA Under 11s against Devon and Middlesex.

The Under 11s travelled and played well and their were several outstanding performances including those from Jaden Leacock, Che Simmons, Jayden Roberts, Jacob Bethell and the Nevis-based Carleon Tuckett, son of former Leeward Islands and West Indies One-day Player, Carl Tuckett. All-rounder Bethell had the distinction of being included in the festival's 2015 Hall of Fame for his bowling performance of five for 21 off nine overs against Devon.

Once the teams left Somerset and headed east, the remainder of the tour was severely hampered by rain. In fact the Under 11s did not play their final two scheduled fixtures - against the Essex U11s at the Royal Hospital School Grounds in Halbrook, Suffolk and against the London Schools' Association XI scheduled for The Walker Cricket Ground, Southgate, London.

The Under 15s were at least able to bat for 40 overs against the Suffolk U17 Invitational XI on a cold Sunday at the beautiful RHS grounds before the heavens finally opened up to torrential rains. The FSA score of 176 all out in 42.5 overs was based on a wonderful 57 off 99 balls from opening batsman Azan Holligan who shared an opening partnership of 44 in 8.4 overs with Tauron Gibson, both enjoying their most fluent batting performances on tour.

Gibson made 19 off 26 balls and following his dismissal and that of captain Marc Cyrus who added a further 39 with Holligan in eight overs, the innings went into a steady decline though there were further useful contributions from all-rounder Jaden Edmund, 15 off 24 balls with 3 fours and Jaden Leacock 13 off 42 balls. The 11-year-old Leacock was making his debut at this level and although he took 24 balls batting at No. 5 to get off the mark, his innings was one of composure that showcased an ability above his age.

The following day, the scheduled match against the Essex U15s at RHS commenced on time following a wonderful effort from the ground staff. Unfortunately, that match lasted a mere 3.2 overs with the home team on 23 without loss with their opening batsmen Vinod Lint on 15 not out having taken on opening bowler Ajani Batson with pulled sixes from consecutive short balls in the day's third over. Fellow new ball bowler Jaden Edmund was enjoying the wicket and conditions in his almost over and a half where he consistently beat the bat with good pace and late swing as evidenced by his seven-two field reminiscent of West Indies Test Cricket bowling of another era.

Outside of the cricket, one of the highlights of the Suffolk trip was an unscheduled appearance by England's most recent international player and a Royal Hospital School Graduate, the Essex left-arm seamer, Reece Topley. Following the aborted matches on Sunday, the teams later assembled in the Chapel of the RHS for Evening Mass.

The anticipated matches in London did not materialize but this was more that compensated when the the tour management was able to secure an hour and half net session at the Marylebone Cricket Club Academy at the historic Lords Cricket Ground. This was a thrilling occasion for the boys and added to their knowledge having previously visited the Somerset County Cricket Club while in Taunton, during their Division 1 County match against Worcestershire.

The Under 15s will reflect on the varying playing surfaces and climatic conditions along with the wonderful facilities for playing cricket in the UK, both at the school and local club level, alongside the two nights spent living with families in Cornwall.

As with their junior colleagues they were several solid individual performances and the team performed creditably with a single loss on tour. The batting was led as expected by senior players Nyeem Young and Cyrus, but the performances of Holligan, Gibson and Demetrius Richards offered much hope for the future. The bowling was always competitive, but the standout was undoubtably Jaden Edmund while there was enough evidence to suggest that the young spinners Renacko Belgrave and Aaron Roberts are ones to watch.

A thoroughly enjoyable experience for both the players, staff and supporters.

The FSA wishes to offer its heartfelt thanks to it sponsors and other partners for ensuring that apart from being enjoyable, the experience for these 31 boys has also been memorable, with many life lessons to positively support their development.

NOTES

The WICB has announced that Stafanie Taylor will be the new captain of the West Indies Women’s team. She succeeds Merissa Aguilleira, whose tenure of captain started at the 2009 ICC Women’s World Cup in Australia.

The appointment was recommended by the WICB Selection Panel and endorsed by the Directors during a teleconference meeting on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old Taylor, who is a top-order batsman and part-time off-spinner, has played 84 One-day and 62 Twenty20 Internationals, since making her debut for Windies Women. She has been the long-standing vice-captain of the team and led Jamaica Women to a sweep of the Regional Women’s titles between 2010 and 2014.

Head WICB selector Clive Lloyd said Taylor had many of the qualities needed to be an inspirational leader.

“Merissa has been there for a long time and did a pretty good job, but we feel the time is right for a new leader and we have chosen Stafanie,” said Lloyd. “She has done well for Windies Women with bat and ball, and has led Jamaica Women successfully, so leading the team would not be alien to her.

“It’s a change that we hope will bring new energy to the team and take it from strength to strength. We believe we can develop a pretty good women’s team for the future and we see Stafanie as the person that could give us that impetus for the future. . .Stafanie has played quite a lot, she has been ICC Player-of-the-Year and she will be able to lead by example.”

Commenting on the announcement, WICB President Whycliffe “Dave” Cameron said: “The Directors have confidence in the decision made by the selectors and accept that it has been made in the best interests of the women’s team.

“Stafanie has held a senior role in our women’s team for some time and has been a good role model for the younger players. She is someone who we believe can take on more responsibility and we congratulate her on this appointment.”

He said: “We also would like to thank Merissa for her leadership of the Windies Women over the last six years, a period during which she helped to establish the side as one of most competitive in the World.

“She was the longest serving West Indies Women’s captain, leading the team to the Final of the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2013 in India and the semi-finals of the last three ICC Women’s Twenty20 World Cup.”

Karishma Ramharack, a 20-year-old off-spinner, is the only complete newcomer to the squad with Kyshona Knight, Chedean Nation and Vanessa Watts earning recalls. Medium-fast bowler Shakera Selman, who takes over as vice-captain, and leg-spinner Shaquana Quintyne return following injury and playing leading roles for newly-minted regional champions, Barbados Women.

The squad will be encamped in Barbados from late September for a period of two weeks prior to the start of the series.

NOTES

The WICB has announced that Jason Holder will be the new captain of the West Indies Test team. He replaces Denesh Ramdin.

The appointment was recommended by the WICB Selection Panel and endorsed unanimously by the Directors during a teleconference meeting on Wednesday.

Head WICB selector Clive Lloyd said Holder the appointment was made with an eye to the future.

“He is a young man that all of the selectors, people in the Caribbean and worldwide believe has several of the qualities that can take our team forward,” said Lloyd.

“We felt the time was right for a change and we feel he will do as well as he did when he was elevated to the position of One-day International captain ahead of the World Cup.

Lloyd added: “We had a number of detractors when he was appointed ODI captain, but he showed during the ODI series in South Africa and the World Cup that he had the qualities that were needed to take our team forward.

“We expect to get new thinking and new dynamism from him. Jason commands respect. He is a fine young man, very intelligent and he seems to get the best from the players because he is a straightforward guy. I think the players will warm to him. He has a young bunch of players and we feel he can guide them in the manner that is required for internationals.”

The 23-year-old Holder also currently holds the position of captain of the West Indies One-day International team. He has appeared in eight Tests, following his debut against New Zealand last June in his native Barbados.

Lloyd said though he felt Holder had the ability to lead West Indies in all three formats, the selectors had no immediate intentions of making him Twenty20 captain right now.

“We do not want to any captain to lead in all three formats just now,” said Lloyd. “It would be quite burdensome on anyone. We think we can have a separate Twenty20 captain.”

Lloyd thanked Ramdin for leading the Test side and said the wicketkeeper/batsman was still had a important part to play in the success of the team.

“I have spoken to Denesh and he understood the situation and there was no animosity,” said Lloyd. “We just want him to perform a little bit better right now, particularly with the bat, and give of his best and support the new captain.”

Commenting on the announcement, WICB President Whycliffe “Dave” Cameron said: “The Directors discussed the recommendation put forward by the selectors. We have all seen Jason’s clear leadership potential and believe he can perform an excellent job for West Indies cricket over many years. We congratulate him on his appointment.

“We would like to thank Denesh for taking on the responsibility of leading the Test side over the last 15 months. He remains an integral part of West Indies cricket and will continue to have a vital role in our Test side.”

Holder is out of the Caribbean on personal business and will comment on his elevation to the position when he returns.

The squad includes uncapped left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, the only newcomer to the international scene, and uncapped fast bowler Carlos Brathwaite, who has made appearances for the Caribbean side previously in One-day Internationals.

The players will be encamped in Barbados from September 20 for a period of eight days and are scheduled to arrive in the Sri Lanka capital of Colombo on October 1.

Ramdin supporting Holder in new role

Trinidad & Tobago Newsday article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - Outgoing West Indies skipper Denesh Ramdin hopes the selectors give new Test captain Jason Holder better resources during his captaincy tenure starting with next month’s two-Test series against host Sri Lanka.

Ramdin becomes the second Trinidadian to be removed as captain in spurious circumstances and reasons by the Clive Lloyd, Courtney Walsh and Eldine Baptiste selection panel,- following Dwayne Bravo’s change as oneday international captain after last year’s abandoned India tour.

After the controversial three-year reign of Darren Sammy as Test team leader, which had the side arguably unbalanced in its playing XI, the 30-year-old Ramdin was chosen as captain for the 2014 home series versus New Zealand.

This was the last act by former Guyanese chairman of selector Clyde Butts on the strength of Ramdin’s leadership qualities at the youth and senior level for TT and with the Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Fifteen months and 13 Tests later, he has been axed but Ramdin noted yesterday that Holder will have his full support.

“Firstly I would just want to congratulate Holder on getting the captaincy,” said Ramdin.

He continued: “Obviously it’s never easy to lead the West Indies especially in these troubling times but I will give my full support.

I am very happy with where I am in life personally, so I will continue working on improving my batting and ‘keeping going forward in order to make my best contribution to the team. I’m not stressing about losing the captaincy.” Ramdin explained that in conversations with selectors he was told the statistical fact of him scoring 472 runs in 13 Tests at an average of 22 in charge, was the main reason behind his removal and that they wanted him to concentrate more on scoring runs.

Before attainting captaincy, Ramdin was excellent with the bat from the 2012 England tour to the 2013 New Zealand tour, scoring 587 runs in 10 Tests at an average of 45.87, including three of his four Test hundreds.

Ramdin countered that argument, stating he could have had better resources at his disposal.

“From day one it was always pressure leading (the) team, not all (the) best players were available due to various reasons and teams that selectors gave me.

So yeah, I think I could had gotten better resources.

Hopefully they give that to Jason,” Ramdin explained.

Notably in Ramdin 13 Tests in charge, due to a combination of injuries, clashes with IPL and Champions League as well as questionable selection choices, Ramdin never got to properly utilise the skills of Dwayne Bravo, Sunil Narine, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Ravi Rampaul, Kieron Pollard and Lendl Simmons in Test cricket.

This handicap was best highlighted when the selectors decided not to select Narine for the 2014 home Tests versus New Zealand because he didn’t return from the IPL where his team was playing in the final.

Kraigg Brathwaite, Bishop rule averages in BCA Elite division Championship at halfway stage

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - A wide gap has been opened by the top batsman and bowler over their closest rivals in the 2015 BCA Elite division Championship averages after the halfway stage.

In five matches, Kraigg Brathwaite, the CounterPoint Wanderers captain and opener has amassed 647 runs including three centuries at the very impressive average of 161.75.

And veteran left-arm spinner Derick Bishop of front-runners Brathwaite Construction/Crane Resort St. Catherine has 53 wickets at 11.88 runs each.

Only three other batsmen have scored over 400 runs and significantly, they are all openers as well - Craig St. Hill of ESA Field Pickwick (465; ave: 58.12), Rashidi Boucher of Massy Stores Spartan (437; ave: 54.62) and BDFSP's Kemar Brathwaite (421; ave: 46.77).

Kraigg Brathwaite, the West Indies Test vice-captain, has three centuries with a highest of 206 not out against Sierka Maple at Dayrells Road in Series 5.

With spinners again dominating the bowling averages, Bishop is 23 wickets ahead of the second highest wicket-taker in yet another left-arm spinner, Steve Pinder of Massy United Insurance Wildey.

Pinder's 30 wickets are at a cost of 13.16, putting him second in the averages.

Apart from his amazing feat of taking all ten wickets for 24 runs in the second innings against title holders ICBL Empire for a match haul of 13 for 91 in the fifth round at Bayfield, Bishop has also bowled the most overs (217.1), most maidens (39), conceded the most runs (630) and has the most five-wicket (five) and ten-wicket (three) hauls.

Of 19 bowlers who have at least 15 wickets, only two are pacers - Tennyson Roach and Lemar Mascoll, both from Empire.

Renaldo Arthur of Wanderers is the leading wicket-keeper with 15 victims (all catches), while UWI's Kavem Hodge has the most catches (12) among the fielders.

Who inspires allrounder Dwayne Smith?

Cricket World article.

When we asked West Indies international Dwayne Smith to tell us about players who had inspired him when he was getting into the game, he produced a veritable list of great players from around the world.

As an all-rounder, he chose to focus on batting and fielding, although with Sir Garry Sobers as one of his inspirations, he has the bowling covered as well.

"As a batsman, I have always liked Sir Vivian Richards," he began, talking to us ahead of the Caribbean Premier League 2015.

"I guess it came from because my father loved him too.

"Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge as openers because they are from Barbados as well."

Having picked his batsmen, he then moved on to fielding inspirations.

"Then for me, as a fielder, I liked Jonty Rhodes, Ricky Ponting, Sir Viv as well and then we also had Clive Lloyd, who was very good in the field as well."

And finally, few would argue with his choice of all-rounder to complete his list of players who inspired him as a youngster.

"To top it all, Sir Garry Sobers, who to this day I still have conversations with.

"They were the people that really stand out for me."

Smith has played 10 Tests, 105 One-Day Internationals and 33 Twenty20 Internationals since making his West Indies debut in 2003.
