Simmons, Pollard setup Mumbai's IPL win

KOLKATA, India, CMC - A brilliant half century and a late onslaught from West Indies cricketers Lendl Simmons and Kieron Pollard set the stage for Mumbai Indians to complete a commanding 41 run win over Chennai Super Kings to reclaim their title as champions of the Indian Premier League here on Sunday.

Simmons slammed a top score of 68 while his Trinidad and Tobago colleague Pollard struck 36 from 18 balls as Mumbai, who won the title two years ago, posted a solid 202 for five from 20 overs at Eden Gardens.

Another West Indies batsman opener Dwayne Smith offered early hope for CSK with a risky half century but his departure was a major blow to their run chase which petered out at 161 for eight in 20 0vers.

Simmons faced 45 balls hitting eight fours and three sixes to complete 500 runs in the IPL this season before succumbing to a Yorker from fellow West Indian Dwayne Smith that kissed the outside of his off stump.

He shared in a 119 run partnership for the second wicket with Captain Rohit Sharma who blasted 50 from 26 balls.

The departure of Simmons was the first of two wickets which fell in consecutive balls as CSK began clawing their way back into the game before Pollard suppressed the fight-back with an all-out attack on the bowling.

Pollard dominated the scoring in the latter stage of the innings to put on a half century stand with Ambati Rayudu who was not out on 36.

The T&T all-rounder was brutal on Ashish Nehra, scoring three sixes and a four from the 17th over which he bowled.

Barbadian Smith survived a few scary moments until he found his touch to top score with a 48 ball 57 for CSK before he was lbw to Harbhajan Singh.

Smith, who hit nine fours and a six, was beaten while attempting to sweep a top spinner from Singh.

He featured in a 66 run stand for the second wicket with Suresh Raina who was stumped for 28.

CSK’s chances of mounting a serious challenge dwindled with the frequent loss of wickets including captain MS Dhona for 18 and Dwayne Bravo for nine.

Mumbai’s triumph against two-time title holders CSK crowns a remarkable turnaround in which they transformed a terrible start, after sitting at the bottom of the table for two weeks, into a title win.

Carter brothers create history with centuries as Sagicor General T20 Championship takes shape

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - In one of the most memorable and sensational weekends in the eight-year history of the BCA Sagicor General Twenty20 Championship, brothers Jonathan and David Carter wrote their names in Barbados' cricket history books.

On Saturday, they became the first siblings to score centuries in the Tournament - both in winning causes in the third series of the 19-team Championship.

The more illustrious Jonathan, 27, who has represented West Indies in ten One-Day Internationals after making his debut on the tour of South Africa in January, slammed 110 for two-time champions Sagicor Life UWI, who crushed title holders Massy Stores Spartan by 138 runs at 3Ws Oval.

Fellow left-hander David, 24, who until this season had little to show in major local domestic competitions, followed an enterprising half-century against CounterPoint Wanderers in Series 2 at Dayrells Road, which impressed new West Indies Head coach Phil Simmons, with a swashbuckling, maiden, unbeaten century (116 not out) for a resurgent Massy United Insurance Wildey (formerly Banks and Banks Wildey) in a five-wicket win over Brathwaite Construction St. Catherine at the SJPP ground, Pine/Wildey.

On Sunday, to show that his first century was no fluke, the bespectacled David smashed another undefeated hundred (110 not out) against IGS Insurance Brokers Yorkshire at Friendship to become the first ever batsman to record consecutive centuries in the Championship.

Wildey amassed 226 for three off 20 overs and went on to triumph by 61 runs.

"For any batsman who has created history, I feel very elated at this moment," David Carter told BCAcricket.org.

"It did not sink in until the weekend was actually over because I started to reflect on what the performance meant to me and my team. I started to reflect and realized it was something brilliant.

"I really won the hearts of my team-mates because we had suffered two losses going into the third round and we were coming from behind so we needed a performance like that."

Simmons, who watched the match against Wanderers on May 17, had praised David Carter for his knock of 51 off 34 balls with five fours and two sixes.

"He has played well today. I heard he is Jonathan's younger brother. He has played very well today," Simmons remarked in a live interview on the CBC Sports Express .

The Carters have now joined veteran all-rounder Dwayne Smith of YMPC as the batsmen with the most centuries (two) in the Tournament, which started in 2008.

Smith hit 101 against Sagicor Life UWI at the 3Ws Oval in 2011 and 112 off Yorkshire at Friendship the next season, while Jonathan's other hundred was 105, also against Yorkshire at Friendship last year.

But David Carter's feat is truly incredible. In 19 Sagicor General T20 matches prior to this season, he had mustered only 252 runs with a solitary half-century (77 not out v St. Catherine at Bayfield last year), at an average of 14.82.

Now the Sports Science student at the University of West Indies, Cave Hill, is the leading batsman in the 2015 Championship with 283 runs, at an average of 141.50.

No longer can fans ask: David Who?

On Saturday, with Wildey needing 16 runs off the very last over in pursuit of 185, David Carter slogged swept the first delivery off off-spinner Shamar Cooke over long-on for six, then square-cut the second, which was pitched wide, behind point for four before pulling the third over wide long-on for six.

His 116 not out came off 65 balls and included 11 fours and six sixes.

"I was actually pretty calm because I knew how well I was batting," he told BCAcricket.org in relation to the start of the final over.

"We had wickets in hand and Jerome Jones, who was at the other end was giving me some encouraging words and he was also striking the ball well."

It stunned St. Catherine and their clannish supporters after captain and former West Indies Test opener Omar Phillips had recorded a Sagicor General T20 career-best 91 not out off 57 balls with six fours and four sixes in a score of 184 for five.

And the win, the first of the season for Wildey, was a great relief for captain and opening batsman Pedro Greaves, who had the unwanted record of becoming the first ever captain in the Tournament to record three straight 'ducks' - off the first, second and third balls respectively.

David Carter's 110 not out on Sunday at a much smaller ground came off 58 balls and included 11 fours and six sixes. He reached his hundred off 55 balls with ten fours and five sixes after bringing up his half-century off 31 deliveries with seven fours and one six.

With Jerome Jones, a former West Indies Under-19 team left-arm fast bowler, who is no slouch with the bat as a right-hander, David Carter added 94 in a mere 5.4 overs for the fourth wicket.

Jones smashed 42 not out off only 15 balls with four fours and three sixes.

And a very relieved Greaves, having demoted himself to No. 4, managed 27 off 13 balls with four fours and one six to earn a ease from those, who had been on his case with all sorts of messages about building a "duck farm" after the match against Wanderers.

Yorkshire used six bowlers with the harshest treatment reserved for two former first-class players in pacer Jamel Noel, who took one for 64 and medium-pacer Antonio Mayers who conceded the same amount runs without taking a wicket - both off four overs.

Significantly against St. Catherine, Carter and Jones also featured in an unfinished stand - 47 in 2.4 overs for the sixth wicket with Jones scoring 15 not out off five balls including two sixes.

Born December 31, 1990 at Gall Hill in the southern parish of Christ Church, David Nathaniel Carter moved with his family to the rural parish of St. Andrew at the age of three, residing in the popular Belleplaine district on the east coast. He was educated at St. Andrew's Primary, Lester Vaughan Secondary and the Barbados Community College before entering the UWI in 2013.

There is cricketing blood in the Carters. Their only other sibling, Dale Brathwaite, also played for Banks and they are cousins of Carlos Brathwaite, the Barbados fast bowling all-rounder and West Indies Test hopeful, who is in the squad preparing for the imminent two-Test series against Australia.

Their mother, Etta Carter (nee Brathwaite) is the sister of Carlos' father, Chesterfield Brathwaite, a former Banks First division batsman, as well as an excellent fielder in his day.

Jonathan Carter's 110 on Saturday came off 49 balls and contained ten sixes and four fours. His hundred took 45 deliveries with nine sixes and three fours. He added 159 off 12.3 overs for the fourth wicket with Kavem Hodge, who made 53 not out off 38 bakes with three fours and one six.

Of the partnership, Carter contributed 107 and Hodge, 44.

Spartan laboured to 89 for seven off 20 overs to suffer one of the biggest ever defeats in the Tournament.

The third round was also marked by an upset six-wicket win by rookies Nicholls Baking Combermere over record four-time finalists and 2010 champions, ICBL Empire, at Waterford 'A'.

Chasing 150 to win, Combermere triumphed with one ball to spare. Captain Leniko Boucher led the way with 75 off 60 balls including six fours and one six, while Nicholas Kirton made 42 off 34 balls with two sixes.

Boucher and Kirton, both Barbados Under-19 players, laid the foundation with a second wicket partnership of 104 in 11.4 overs.

Empire made 149 for five after winning the toss. Opener Kevin Stoute hit an unbeaten 73 off 53 balls with five fours.

Pacer Keon Harding took two for 23 off four overs.

Another school team, Caribbean Alliance/Akobah Gardens Foundation, who joined Combermere in boycotting the first two rounds because of a selection issue with the BCA, lost by seven wickets to Lee's Bistro Carlton at Church Hill.

Set 111 to win, Carlton were put on course by opener Alex Browne, who lashed 63 off 32 balls with seven sixes and three fours.

In Zone 'B', apart from what transpired at the SJPP ground, there was a thriller at Friendship with Yorkshire and Wanderers battling to a tie before Wanderers won in the Super Over, while Maple beat Ince Transport MTW by four wickets at Trents.

All of the victories in Zone 'C' were one-sided. BDFSP beat YMPC by 71 runs at Paragon, Police defeated BRC Electronic on Edge BCL by seven wickets at Weymouth and ESA Field Pickwick bushed aside Guardian General Barbados by 84 runs at Lester Vaughn, Cane Garden.

On Sunday, in Zone 'A', UWI defeated Empire by three wickets in a low-scoring match at Bank Hall; Combermere beat Foundation by five wickets at Church Hill and LIME left Spartan under pressure to reach the quarter-finals with a seven-wicket victory at Wildey.

Joining Wildey as winners from Zone 'B' were Maple, who demolished St. Catherine by nine wickets at Bayfield and Wanderers by 23 runs over MTW at Pine Basin.

Wanderers captain and fast bowling all-rounder Diego Stuart had a fine match with both bat and ball. He scored 38 not out off 28 balls with three fours and one six in a total of 129 for four off 20 overs and then grabbed five for 22 off four overs at MTW were bowled out for 106 in 19.1 overs.

And in Zone 'C', BDFSP beat BCL by 92 runs at Blenheim 'A'; Pickwick became the first team to win all four matches as they brushed YMPC by seven wickets at Foursquare Oval and Police squeezed a thrilling one-wicket win off the very last ball against Barbados Youth at Harrison College, Crumpton Street.

As it stands, with only one round of matches remaining in Zones 'B' and 'C' on May 30, MTW, Yorkshire, Barbados Youth and BCL cannot reach the knockout stage.

Zone 'A' will be completed on June 6.

(NB: Please see summarised scores of Series 3 and 4, as well as Points and the remaining preliminary matches).

In one of the most memorable and sensational weekends in the eight-year history of the BCA Sagicor General Twenty20 Championship, brothers Jonathan and David Carter wrote their names in Barbados' cricket history books.

Best - I regret not being an allrounder

Bridgetown, Barbados - Tino Best talks about banter with Flintoff, wild celebrations, and why his Test-highest 95 is not his No. 1 achievement.

"Mind the windows, Tino!" Tell us about that Freddie Flintoff sledge.

It's a good gag, isn't it? Freddie is a legend. If I wrote a book I'd call it Mind the Windows. I'm not embarrassed, stuff like that is good for the game. I always thought Ashley Giles was a decent bowler, but he wasn't spinning the ball that much, so I had a go.

Fred was only getting you back, wasn't he?

That's right. I once ran to bowl to him in Trinidad without the ball. He was ducking and scrambling because he thought I'd bowled a bouncer. Everyone started laughing. In the end I made my highest Test score, the 95 against England. I got my revenge. It was all gravy in the end.

You scored that 95 but recently wrote on Twitter that you can't bat. What happened?

People on Twitter cuss me. I like having a pop back. I can bat!

Do you enjoy your batting?

Oh man, yes. I used to bat a lot. I batted at three or opened as a kid, then at 19 I became a bowler. When I put my head down, I can bat. It's all about temperament. One of my big regrets is that I didn't become a proper allrounder. I see people who are allrounders now and I think, seriously, I could have been one.

Where does your 95 rank in your career achievements?

It's number three.

And what are the top two?

Number one is my 6 for 40 against Bangladesh on one of the most docile pitches ever. I did it with a hamstring injection. I needed to have three injections to run.

The second one is my first Test wicket - Graham Thorpe. He'd seen me playing as a kid in 1990 on the outfield at Sabina Park and was impressed. He gave me his bat - his Kookaburra - and I told him it was my dream to open the batting for West Indies. Then years later he became the first man I dismissed. It was crazy.

You're 5ft 8in tall. As a pace bowler, do you ever wish you were taller?

No, not at all. My bowling wish would be that I was more consistent. I tried to blast people out and bowl 95mph. I should have settled for 85mph, with a bit of shape and wish I'd mastered that when I was 22.

Do you feel harshly treated by West Indies?

My granddad is 92 now. He emigrated to England in the '50s and he always says if I was playing in England I'd have played 80 or 90 Tests. If I was in a different set-up I'd have played more. I wish I was treated better.

Which of your team-mates has the worst taste in music?

Ottis Gibson listened to anything when he was playing. He doesn't have a good taste in music.

Who is the worst dressed?

Kirk Edwards. He's not a hot dresser. He wears anything.

Who is the best dancer?

Darren Sammy.

And the worst?

Sunil Narine.

Who is the best fun on a night out?

Chris Gayle, without a doubt.

What is it like to share a dressing room with Brian Lara?

It was amazing. It was awesome. He was a real fighter and a guy who worked his butt off. When we were losing he always tried to be positive.

Who was your cricketing hero?

My uncle, Carlisle Best.

Who is the biggest influence on your career?

Again, my uncle Carlisle, and my grandmother. She told me to keep working hard and the rewards would come.

What's the story behind your nickname Ntini?

That's what Wikipedia says but Wikipedia is a liar! I have two nicknames: Animal and Bobski. I love Bobski because it's after one of my favourite singers, Bobby Digital, from the Wu-Tang Clan.

What's the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

Devon Malcolm, when I was about 18, watched me bowl. I was bowling rapid but had no control. He said to me: "You've got pace but right now you're a Ferrari without a steering handle." It was nice for him to say that. Ferraris are good, right?

Who has got the worst celebrations after taking a wicket?

Imran Tahir goes mental. He's worse than me!

And who has the best?

Brett Lee. When he gets a wicket he's pumping his fists. He gives me goosebumps. He's one of my inspirations.

If you could bowl at one batsman from the past, who would it be?

I would love to bowl at Sir Garry Sobers and my uncle Carlisle Best when we were all in our primes, aged 25. I tease Sir Garry and say, "I would love to have bowled at you." He says, "Tino, I would have creamed you everywhere!"

Describe yourself in a sentence.

I wear my heart on my sleeve.

Holder - Windies keen to come at Aussies

AAP article.

Roseau, Dominica - Allrounder says the West Indies confident ahead of the first Test in Dominica.

West Indies allrounder Jason Holder has warned Australia to be ready for a pumped up Windies in the upcoming two-Test series. Holder says a young Windies line-up is riding high on confidence after an encouraging display against England recently and hoping to bring that same form against Australia.

The first Test starts on Wednesday in Dominica, a venue where Holder hasn't even played a first class match let alone an international fixture. Quick single: All you need to know about Windies v Australia.

But the 23-year-old says the hosts will be up for the fight against their more vaunted opponents." They're ranked No.2 in the world and that says a lot," Holder said."We're currently down at eight and we need to work our way up.

We have to give them the respect they're due but obviously we're coming to compete and win this series."We'll be coming in quite hard at them. Looking to be aggressive and at least continue the rich vein of form we had in the England series.

"Holder also flatbatted questions about veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul's omission from the squad. The 40-year-old's exclusion has been a hot topic across the Caribbean, with several calling for Chanderpaul to have a farewell tour to honour his two decade Test career.

"The exclusion of Shiv has caused a lot of talk," Holder said. "That's beyond me at this present time, my focus right now is on cricket. It's quite important we put cricket first and try to perform well against Australia."

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Title holders Isolation Cavaliers will oppose fellow 'country' team Central on home turf at KMV Oval, Lakes, St. Andrew in the opening series of the 2015 BCA Sagicor General Shield (40-over) Championship on Sunday, June 7.

Isolation Cavaliers are in Zone 'A' of the 42-team Tournament, which is divided into eight zones.

They captured the 2014 title with a seven-wicket victory over school side Nicholls Baking Combermere in an August 31 final at Kensington Oval, which will long be remembered for a hurricane, boundary-studded, unbeaten century by former Barbados and West Indies opening batsman Dale Richards.

Richards slammed 124 not out off 88 balls with nine sixes and five fours as Isolation Cavaliers, set 213 to win, triumphed with seven balls to spare.

Combermere will not be appearing this season after winning the Intermediate division three-day Championship, which earned them promotion to the First division, thus becoming the second school team in successive years behind Caribbean Alliance/Akobah Gardens Foundation to lift the title.

As a result, Combermere, like Foundation, are contesting the ongoing Sagicor General Twenty20 Championship, as well as the Sagicor General Super Cup (50-over), which begins August 9.

There are five school teams in this year's Shield Championship - Coleridge & Parry (Zone C), Milo Lodge, Queen's College (both Zone E), Alleyne (Zone G) and Alexandra (Zone H), apart from two other learning institutions in Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP) (Zone C) and Barbados Community College (Zone F).

Round robin matches continue on June 14, 21, 28 and July 5 with 'Eighth-Finals' slated for July 12; quarter-finals (July 19), semi-finals (August 9) and Final (August 16; reserve day - August 23).

Series 1 matches:

ZONE A - Market Hill v King's Park at Market Hill; Isolation Cavaliers v Central at KMV Oval; Iris Walker Pioneers v ELD Belleplaine at Pinfold Street.

ZONE B - Esso Tweedside Maxwell v Benfica at Briar Hall; COW Equipment Malvern v Sky Mall Mapp Hill at Ellerton; CSOSA v BDF at Waterford 'B'.

Holder: First hour on second day crucial

By CMC.

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Jason Holder admitted Wednesday that West Indies had been let down by poor batting and said the bowlers needed to continue their good work in the crucial first hour on the second day on Thursday, in order to get the regional back into the contest.

West Indies were bowled out for a paltry 148 in their first innings after opting to bat first at Windsor Park but they hit back to reduce Australia to 85 for three at the close.

“It is important that we start well tomorrow morning. Obviously we didn’t put enough runs on the board in my opinion,” the 23-year-old said.

“Having said that, we got three wickets this evening which set them back a bit. It is not an easy scoring ground and the outfield is not contributing to that fact, and you have to graft a bit to get in on the pitch.

“We got three wickets this evening and tomorrow morning it is very important that we start well and we’ll see how it goes from there.”

Holder was just one of two players to get past 20, scoring 21 in a 30-run, seventh-wicket stand with captain Denesh Ramdin who hit 19.

Shai Hope, in his second Test, top-scored with 36 but was one of three wickets to go down in the morning session, as West Indies stumbled to 85 for three at lunch.

“It’s not an easy scoring pitch, it was quite two-paced this morning and our batsmen had to work hard to get in. Australia gave up a few boundaries in the first session and we were scoring relatively quickly but we lost wickets,” Holder explained.

“In the afternoon session when the ball got a little softer, scoring became a little more difficult and there was a little late movement and it was hard in a sense to get a start. The Australians didn’t make it any easier because they bowled well.

“As I said, the first hour is very important. We have to hit the ground running and just show that enthusiasm from early.”

West Indies entered the series on a high, following a 1-1 draw in the three-Test series against England last month, and Holder said it was important the regional side built on this.

“We had a pretty decent series against England but that’s behind us at this present time. We’re playing Australia … and they are the number two ranked side in the world so we just need to be a little better than we were in the England series,” he said.

“We can’t forget what we did in the England series, we did a lot of good things there and it’s just important we carry on in that same vein and not lapse in a sense and go back into a mould that we don’t want to get back into.”

Bridgetown, Barbados - BCA Women's XI defeated UWI Blackbirds Women by 38 runs in the opening match of the triangular Goodwill Women's Twenty20 Tournament at 3Ws Oval today.

After being sent in, the BCA team scored 130 for five off 20 overs.

Captain Shaquana Quintyne made 32 off 28 balls with two fours, while fellow West Indies Women's player Hayley Matthews contributed 31 off 27 deliveries, striking five boundaries.

Matthews, just back from the successful West Indies Women's tour of Sri Lanka, added 42 in 6.3 overs for the first wicket with Kycia Knight (15), who also played in the series against Sri Lanka.

Quintyne and Kyshona Knight, the twin sister of Kycia, put on 54 in 8.4 overs for the third wicket.

Malissa Howard took two for 23 off four overs.

The Blackbirds were restricted to 92 for seven after experienced West Indies Women's all-rounder Deandra Dottin threatened to explode with the topscore of 26 off only 14 balls including five fours.

Captain Shakera Selman, a veteran international player, laboured 40 balls for an unbeaten 16.

Holder, Mayers blast unbeaten 50s as LIME, Carlton snatch last two quarter-final places in Sagicor T20

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Birthday boy Amory Holder and Kyle Mayers both slammed hurricane, unbeaten half-centuries as LIME and Lee's Bistro Carlton grabbed the last two quarter-final places with contrasting wins in the 2015 BCA Sagicor General Twenty20 Championship.

Nicknamed "Spin Pooch", Holder celebrated his 28th birthday with an explosive 62 not out including six sixes and two fours off 45 balls against his alma mater Caribbean Alliance/Akobah Gardens Foundation in a 30-run triumph at Church Hill, which ensured LIME finished second in Zone 'A'.

And in what was a virtual 'knockout' in the same zone, Carlton captain Mayers mauled the Massy Stores Spartan bowling in scoring 63 not out off 38 balls with five sixes and two fours, propelling his side to a six-wicket win with five balls to spare.

It resulted in Spartan, the 2014 champions, tumbling out of the 19-team Championship.

Another skipper, Chadwick Walton, also struck a brisk half-century - 52 off only 24 balls with five fours and four sixes - as comfortable zone winners and two-time champions Sagicor Life UWI beat newcomers Nicholls Baking Combermere by 44 runs at the 3Ws Oval.

UWI and ESA Field Pickwick, who topped Zone 'C', were the only teams to win all of their matches though UWI's first after drawing a bye in the opening round was by default against Foundation, who like Combermere and Guardian General Barbados Youth, all defaulted matches in the first two rounds because of a boycott by the Barbados Association of Principals of Public Secondary Schools (BAPPS) over a selection issue with the BCA.

The teams in the last eight are UWI, Maple, Pickwick, LIME, CounterPoint Wanderers, Police, Brathwaite Construction St. Catherine and Carlton.

Maple and UWI are the only teams to capture the title twice in the now eight-year history of the Championship.

The quarter-finals are scheduled for next Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday under lights at Kensington Oval.

The semi-finals are slated for July 2 and 3 with the Final on July 5.

At Queen's Park:

A far cry from the team which lost only one of eight matches last season in lifting the Championship for the first time, Spartan's demise came at the 'death' in the face of two of the most lethal limited overs batsmen in the island.

Chasing 134 to win in 20 overs, Carlton required 26 runs off the last two overs with Mayers and former Barbados player Carlo Morris at the crease.

Nineteen runs came off the penultimate over from left-arm spinner Andre "Ears" Marshall with Mayers hitting two sixes and Morris adding a six as well.

The tall, strongly-built Morris duly ended the match off the first ball of the last over following a no-ball, by smashing a full toss from left-arm spinner Chad Williams overhead for six in scoring 18 not out with two sixes off 11 deliveries.

Left-hander Mayers had reached his half-century off 34 balls including three sixes and two fours.

Off-spinner Chaim Holder took two for eight off four overs to be head and shoulders above the other five bowlers as Spartan banked on their traditionally heavy spin attack.

Sulieman Benn, the tall, left-arm spinner who was dropped from the West Indies team after the opening match of the recent three-Test series against England, conceded 39 runs off four overs, Andre Marshall had one for 30, also off four overs, pacer Rico Webb sent down two overs for 21 runs and Williams was lashed for 20 off seven balls.

Apart from Holder, Omar Marshall, who shared the new ball with Andre Marshall, was the next best bowler with one for 18 off four overs.

After winning the toss, Spartan scored 133 for seven.

Captain and opener Akeem Springer topscored with 38 off 32 balls including seven fours, while Benn made 25 off only 18 balls with three sixes at No. 6 and Shane Browne, 22, at No. 3.

Leg-spinner Shakeem Wilkinson took three for 40, left-arm pacer Tariq Shorey, two for 21 and off-spinner Alex Bridgeman, two for 26 - all off four overs.

At Church Hill:

On a ground which he knows well from his school days, Amory Holder exploded at the right time for LIME on what was a memorable 28th birthday.

Holder went to the crease with LIME struggling on 31 for three in the eighth over in the face of incisive seam bowling from Akeem Evelyn, who prised out the first three batsmen - co-incidentally all for seven - in a four-over spell from the southern end after Foundation won the toss.

Cyprian Payne was caught at mid-on by Mario Hinds running to his right with the score 17 after 3.2 overs; his opening partner Jason Hinds was comprehensively bowled (23 for two; 5.1 overs) and veteran Randy Thomas was well caught at deep extra-cover by Dominic Drakes (31 for three; 7.1 overs).

But the tall Holder soon targetted skipper and leg-spinner Joshua Drakes, who replaced Evelyn, slamming his sixes very far between the arc of long-off and long-on.

Having reached 46 for three after ten overs, LIME suffered a further setback in the 12th over when skipper Ashley Nurse was caught on the long-on boundary by Jermaine Davis off Joshua Drakes to leave the score 56 for four.

And after wicket-keeper/batsman Devon Phillips was caught by a diving Javere Dowridge at long-on off Shakeem Blades for one to make it 87 for five in the 15th over, Holder and Matthew Greaves lifted the tempo with strong, clean hitting.

Holder brought up his half-century with his sixth six, along with two fours, off 34 balls, taking the score to 102 for five in the 16th over.

With Greaves, he added 48 in 4.5 overs before Greaves fell to Shomari Davis for 26 off 14 balls including two sixes and one four.

Evelyn finished with the impressive figures of three for 14 including one maiden, but Joshua Drakes (one for 47 off four overs including four wides) and Blades (one for 30 off three overs with three wides) felt the power of Holder and Greaves.

Foundation started briskly and were 24 without loss off three overs before off-spinner Nurse bowled Shomari Davis for 16 with his third delivery in what turned out to be the only maiden over of the innings.

Though managing to reach 54 for three off ten overs, the batsmen then struggled against a heavily biased spin attack of five off-break bowlers - Nurse, Dwayne Lynch, Daley Hurley, Michael Agard Jr and Hinds - and were restricted to 110 for nine. The other bowler used was left-arm pacer Davien Branker.

Six batsmen reached double-figures with Joshua Drakes' 18 the topscore.

Nurse grabbed three for 14 off three overs, Agard, two for 19 off four overs and Lynch, two for 23 off three overs.

The defeat left Foundation still without a win after two seasons despite some close finishes.

At 3Ws Oval:

When Chadwick Walton is on the attack, very few bowlers can escape his blistering bat.

Playing in the Championship for the first time, Combermere found that out as the 29-year-old Jamaican, who has played two Tests, five One-Day Internationals and two T20 Internationals with very poor returns, but is a "guru" in domestic club cricket, clobbered his way to 52 off 24 balls with five fours and four sixes in a UWI total of 144 for seven off 20 overs after they were sent in.

Walton's compatriot Paul Palmer, playing in the Championship for the first time as UWI continue to show off their riches of players from across the Caribbean, made 25 at No. 4.

Left-arm spinner Matthew Jones picked up two for 20 after coming on as the last of six bowlers and pacer Keon Harding, two for 24 - both of four overs.

Combermere passed 50 with only two wickets down but then the last eight wickets tumbled for 34 runs as they were bowled out for 100 in 18.1 overs.

Captain and opener Leniko Boucher topscored with 29, while Nicholas Kirton made 28 as the pair added 44 for the second wicket.

Jamaican leg-spinner Akeem Dewar, showing signs of a gradual return to form after a generally disappointing 2014 season in all formats, took two for ten off four overs.

Kristopher Ramsaran, a left-arm chinaman spinner from Trinidad & Tobago, picked up two for 24 off four overs and pacer Nino Henry, an Antiguan, two for 26 off 3.1 overs.

Sky Sports article.

London, England - Who was the Caribbean side's best trainer - and worst driver!?

Test-match sides never had it easy facing Curtly Ambrose and co – but what were the West Indian boys like behind closed doors?

We asked fast-bowling great Ambrose, a man with 405 Test wickets and 225 ODI scalps, discuss the men he teamed with between 1988 and 2000.

So read on to hear which Caribbean star played with the most flair, who had the best throw – and who needed to be more switched-on while driving…

Who was the worst loser?

All the senior guys took losing to heart and a lot harder than some of the youngsters, who didn’t always understand the game the way we did. Courtney Walsh and myself, especially if we didn’t bowl well, felt we should take a lot of the blame – but I got more upset than Courtney!

Who was most likely to sleep with their bat?

Jimmy Adams, who is now coaching at Kent, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul may have done something like that.

Shiv Chanderpaul may have been tempted to bed down with his bat

Who played with the most flair?

Carl Hooper. He played exciting cricket but also thrived under pressure.

Who was the best and worst trainer?

Richie Richardson was the best trainer, while Brian Lara was the worst, albeit only early in his career.

Who had the gun arm?

Sir Vivian Richards had a pretty good throw but Nehemiah Perry, an off-spinner, had a fantastic arm.

Sir Viv likes his golf and always had a strong arm, says Curtly

Who was the best parker of a car and who was the worst?

The best was Courtney but the worst was certainly Sherwin Campbell, who once knocked some workmen off a plinth and didn’t even realise it!

Who was the most musical?

Me, of course, by a long, long way! My favourite instrument to play is the bass guitar but I also play a bit of drums.

Who was the biggest joker?

Kenny Benjamin and Curtly Ambrose, in that order. We played quite a few pranks together.

Who spent the longest in front of the mirror?

Keith Arthurton. He was always putting something on his face, as was Franklyn Rose.
