WICB plans revamp of youth cricket

Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Too many primary school cricketers are not being exposed to hard ball cricket and the West Indies Cricket Board will be making serious steps to amend the situation.

KJ Singh, the WICB’s Senior Project Officer for Schools’ Cricket, told The Barbados Advocate that not being exposed to hard ball cricket at a young age is hurting West Indies cricket in the long run. He pointed out that at the moment hard ball cricket at the primary school level is played in just Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and to some extent in Dominica and St. Kitts’ Nevis. The other 12 territories play windball cricket up to the age of 13.

“It definitely affects us because what is happening is that when we should be doing tactical game play we are still doing technical game play. In the other regions such as England, South Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand, kids there are exposed at the primary level. They start playing with the hard ball, hardball bats, pads etc, and learning to run between the wickets with the equipment very early, as early as seven.”

“The disadvantage that we have is that we start the hard ball format of the game in many of the territories until Under-13 or at age 13 flat. So they have a five year advantage over us in terms of how the technical components of the game develop. So by the time they get to the age of 15 they are thinking tactical. By the time we get to the age of 15 we are still thinking technical,” said Singh.

Singh believes that many of the territories may have shied away from exposing young players to hard ball cricket because of the fear of injury. In many of the territories the cost of safety equipment such as pads and helmets is very high and windball cricket was seen as a cheaper alternative.

He singled out the Guardian General Herman Griffith Primary Schools’ Cricket Competition as the kind of tournament they want to see happening throughout the Caribbean. It is the only hard-ball schools’ cricket competition for primary school children in the Caribbean.

Through the ScotiaBank Kiddie Cricket Program the WICB is now able to provide plastic kits to over 700 schools across the region. However, Singh noted that more must still be done to ensure that hardball cricket competition becomes the norm for all primary school children throughout the region.

“With mass participation for boys and girls we have that covered, but the next stage we would like to do on the West Indies Cricket Board agenda – and going out to corporate sponsorship – is to get branded equipment. It might be ScotiaBank helping us out or any other corporate to, in a phased approach from now until 2019, bring up the standard of the cricket programmes and to get coaches qualified in the schools and also to have equipment there to start tournaments,” said Singh.

Singh spoke to The Barbados Advocate after the launch of the WICB/UNICEF Fair Play Coaching Program at the Accra Beach Hotel on Wednesday night.

Smith, Bravo, Russell on winning sides

CHENNAI, India, CMC - Both West Indies opener Dwayne Smith and teammate Dwayne Bravo failed with the bat, but Chennai Super Kings did just enough to beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 24 runs in the Indian Premier League here yesterday.

Playing at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, the right-handed Smith made a six-ball nought while Bravo managed just two as Chennai rallied to 148 for nine off their 20 overs after opting to bat first.

Bravo then played a key role with the ball, snaring two for 17 from 3.4 overs to help limit RCB to 124 all out and two balls remaining in the innings.

Chennai suffered the worst possible start when Smith was bowled by Australia left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc off the last ball of the game's first over, without a run on the board.

His partner, New Zealander Brendon McCullum, fell for 20 in the sixth over, leaving Suresh Raina to rebuild the innings in a 64-run, third-wicket stand with South Africa's Faf du Plessis.

The left-handed Raina top scored with 52 off 46 balls with five fours and a six, while du Plessis struck 24 from 20 deliveries.

Once du Plessis was bowled by Harshal Patel in the 15th over, wickets fell steadily with Bravo among the collapse - falling with two balls left in the innings to a catch at cover off Starc.

Without Chris Gayle in the line up, RCB were powered by captain Virat Kohli who stroked 48 off 41 balls at the top of the order in a 63-run fourth-wicket stand with Dinesh Karthik, who got 23 off 20 balls.

Bravo got the breakthrough when he ran out Kohli in the 14th over, after the right-hander squeezed out a yorker back to the Trinidadian seamer who threw down the wicket with the batsman out of his crease.

Struggling on 97 for four, RCB then lost a slew of wickets with Bravo picking up two to help the visitors' demise.

At Eden Gardens in Kolkata, there was also little success for West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell, even though his Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 35 runs.

Russell scored just one in his team's total of 167 for seven, and took one for 10 from two overs as Sunrisers stumbled to 132 all out.

Edwards excited with Hampshire move

BBC Sport article.

Hampshire, England - West Indies fast bowler Fidel Edwards says he is excited by the opportunity to play for Hampshire.

Edwards bowled his first overs for the county on Monday in their T20 victory over Dorset.

The 33-year-old sent down just three overs at a cost of 24 runs as Hampshire won on a faster scoring rate.

"This is a new chapter and I've always wanted to come over and play, especially in the T20," Edwards told BBC Radio Solent.

"Watching them on TV they look pretty exciting so hopefully I can get a couple of T20s under my belt and hopefully do good in the four-day games."

He arrived earlier than planned because of an injury to Australian Jackson Bird , and Edwards knows exactly the job he has been brought in to do..

"My job is very easy; bowl fast and get wickets," he added.

Edwards will return to the West Indies towards the end of June to play for the St Lucia Zouks in the Caribbean Premier League but will return to Hampshire after the tournament.

Moseley hits impressive century on debut for Frinton

Barbados Cricket Association article.

London, England - Shayne Moseley, the CounterPoint Wanderers and former Barbados Under-19 team batting all-rounder, has made an impressive debut for Frinton Cricket Club with a century.

Playing in the Suffolk and Essex League Division 1, Moseley hit 107 off 127 balls with seven fours and two sixes in a winning cause against Hadleigh at Hadleigh.

Frinton scored 258 for eight off 50 overs and went on to triumph by 70 runs.

Moseley, a left-hand opening batsman who bowls right-arm medium-pace, also had the honour of becoming the first overseas player to achieve the feat of a century in his first match for the club.

Two other Barbadians - all-rounders Raymon Reifer and Justin Greaves - have also represented Frinton, as well as New Zealanders Doug Bracewell and Adam Milne.

Moseley's contract was partly organised by Emmerson Trotman, the former Spartan, Barbados and Border (in South Africa) batsman who now works as a coach at the Barbados Cricket Association after he scored an impressive century (132) for a Barbados XI against West Indies 'A' in a two-day practice match at the 3Ws Oval last September.

A product of St. Patrick's Primary (now Gordon Walters) School and Combermere, Moseley was a member of the champion Barbados Under-19 team three-day team in 2012 under the captaincy of Shai Hope, who made his debut for West Indies in the just concluded third and final Test against England at Kensington Oval.

The 5ft, 11inch Moseley comes from a cricketing family. One of his uncles, Hallam Moseley, was a hard-working fast bowler, who represented current BCA top league (Elite) three-day champions Empire in the 1960s and early 1970s, as well as Barbados in the then Shell Shield first-class Championship before turning out for Somerset in the English County Championship.

Another uncle, Colin "Rex" Moseley, played for Princess Margaret Secondary and Banks in BCA competitions, while his father Ronald "Padda" Robinson represented Foundation School in the 1970s.

Shayne Moseley has also played in Barbados and Combined Campuses & Colleges trials in recent seasons.

The Suffolk and Essex League is their highest division and is also known as the two Counties League because it incorporates the two Counties.

A resident of Pilgrim Place in the southern Barbados parish of Christ Church, Moseley will miss the majority of the 2015 BCA domestic season, which starts May 16, as he is not due to return home before mid-September.

Simmons shines, Pollard fails in IPL

CHENNAI, India, CMC – Opener Lendl Simmons and West Indies teammate Kieron Pollard suffered contrasting fortunes but still emerged on the winning side, as Mumbai Indians produced a late surge to beat Chennai Super Kings by six wickets in the Indian Premier League here Friday.

Playing at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Mumbai chased down Chennai’s 158 for five, reaching their target in the final over with four balls to spare.

Simmons and Parthiv Patel gave the hosts a rollicking start, adding 84 from 61 balls for the first wicket.

The right-handed Simmons gathered 38 off 31 balls with three fours and two sixes while Parthiv top-scored with 45 from 32 deliveries, with six fours.

In one over from seamer Ashish Nehra – the fifth of the innings – Simmons plundered 15 runs, crashing the left-armer for two fours and a six.

Parthiv fell off the first ball of the 10th over and Simmons followed three deliveries later, skying a sweep to another West Indies teammate Dwayne Smith at mid-wicket, at 85 for two.

Pollard fell in the next over, run out for one, with a throw from his fellow Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies counterpart Dwayne Bravo, finding him short of his ground at the striker’s end.

Facing a tall order of 51 runs from the last 24 balls, Ambati Rayudu (34 not out) and Hardik Pandya (21 not out) came to Mumbai’s rescue with an explosive, unbroken 34-run stand for the fifth wicket.

With just five runs needed from the last over, Bravo could do little as Mumbai gathered the runs required from the right-armer’s first two balls.

Earlier, Smith cracked 27 off 34 balls in a 44-run opening stand with big-hitting New Zealander Brendon McCullum who hit 23 from 11 balls.

When Chennai slumped to 104 for four in the 16th over, captain MS Dhoni (39 not out) and Pawan Negi (36 not out) put on 54 from 28 balls for the fifth wicket, to lend energy to the innings.

St. Michael School honours Jason Holder

Jamaica Gleaner article.

Kingston, Jamaica - The St. Michael School has hundreds of alumni that they are proud of and Jason Holder is one of them.

As part of the school’s 87th anniversary celebrations, a reception was held in Holder’s honour at the Martindale’s Road institution last Thursday. Holder entered the school at the third form level after being transferred from the now defunct Louis Lynch Secondary School.

Just last year, Holder was appointed as the West Indies One-Day International Captain, the youngest ever captain in West Indies’ history. He was also instrumental in helping the West Indies to draw the recently ended Test series against England.

A number of former Barbados and West Indies cricketers attended the reception, including Barbados Cricket Association President Joel Garner, who gave a short speech praising Holder for his performances for the regional outfit thus far.

The articulate Holder noted that he didn’t think that he would have been showered with so much appreciation for what he has done in his short career thus far.

“It is very good to see the young players that played with me during my school days here. One thing I always tried to do with the youngsters is try to pull them up, put them on the right path and

encourage them to do great things.

“I stand here tonight because for me it is all about belief. A lot of people in cricket want personal glory, but they don’t want to work for it; they don’t have that inner belief. I think belief begins within and I think the more people we get to believe within, the better cricketers we will produce,” said Holder.

On display at the back of the hall at the St. Michael School is a small exhibit with photos of Holder from his school days right up to now he is playing for the West Indies. Also on display are some pieces of memorabilia he has signed.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Six of Barbados’ and the West Indies’ cricketers read the game wrong when they heeded Barbados manager Hartley Reid’s suggestion to turn out at the Maria Holder Nursery in Jackson yesterday.

The six, openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope, 50-overs captain Jason Holder, all-rounders Ashley Nurse, Carlos Brathwaite and wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich, thought that they were going to the nursery to interact with the over 30 children.

However, the joy and excitement shown by head of the nursery Shelley Boyce and her staff rivalled that of the children as the adults sought every chance to take photos and chat with the cricketers.

Later the children were given opportunities to practise their bowling, batting and fielding skills with the six players who were part of Barbados’ squad this year. And Kenrick Hinkson didn’t waste a chance to learn from Brathwaite, being shown in this Kenmore Bynoe photo a compact stance while Dowrich kept wicket.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – A late decision will be made on seamer Jason Holder’s fitness for the crucial third and final Test against England bowling off here Friday.

The lanky six-footer injured his left ankle after tripping and falling during his delivery stride while bowling his second over during in the second innings of the second Test in Grenada. He was stretchered off the field for treatment and did not return.

He arrived here on Sunday with the ankle strapped but word from the West Indies camp on Monday INDICATED the Holder was in great spirits and walking freely.

The only concern is the player’s ability to handle a heavy workload in the upcoming Test.

A decision will be made on Thursday night or early Friday about his including in the final XI.

Speaking at the weekend, captain Denesh Ramdin was confident Holder would recover in time.

“It's just a slight injury. Hopefully he can rest up for the next few days and come back stronger,” Ramdin said.

Holder, the one-day captain, has proved a key asset with the bat in the ongoing series, after stroking a superb maiden Test and first class hundred in the drawn opening Test in Antigua two weeks ago.

West Indies enter this weekend’s game trailing 0-1 after losing the Grenada contest by nine wickets on Saturday.

Bravo shines as CSK steals late victory

CHENNAI, India, CMC - Impressive death bowling by West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo stifled an easy run chase and fired Chennai Super Kings to a close two run win over Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday.

Bravo grabbed three wickets for 22 runs from three overs which restricted KKK to 132 for nine in 20 overs after aggressive bowling from fellow West Indian Andre Russell helped to restrict CSK to a paltry 134.

Another West Indian, Dwayne Smith hit 25 from 19 balls, the second highest score for CSK in the low-scoring encounter at the M Chinaswamy stadium at Chennai.

Faf du Plessis was not out on a top score of 29 on a pitch that did not allow for free scoring with the exception of Smith who counted three fours and a six, Brandon McCullum who scored 19 and for the opposition Robin Uthappa 39 and Ryan ten Doeschate 38 not out.

Russell, who was run out for four during the chase,  finished with two for 26 from four overs, removing the wickets of Suresh Raina for 17 and  Ms Dhoni for three.

KKR started off quite positively despite Gautam Gambhir‘s early wicket as Robin Uthappa took the attack to the bowlers smashing 39 off 16.

However, things turned drastically after he was dismissed and no other batsman MANAGED to put up a fight.

But with 17 runs needed in the final over Doeschate smashed a six and two fours off Bravo just as the balls ran out.

Bravo, whose wicket haul included two in one over and who was also involved in two other dismissals including a stunning grab to remove Suryakumar Yadav, was named man of the match.

"It was a great team effort. Disappointed with the way I got out so I wanted to do something special,” said Bravo who was caught for five.

“Catch was really special, reminded me about four-five years ago. Body is still holding up and it's a great feeling to know I helped the team win. This situation is what I prepare myself for”.

Super Kings have now won nine home matches in a row, and are at the top of the table with a match in hand.

KKK played without their front line bowler, West Indies spinner Sunil Narine, who is undergoing a new round of tests of his bowling action.

Holder starts to turn the Windies tide

Telegraph article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - All-rounder who survived World Cup captaincy baptism of fire tells Scyld Berry about his early years and his match-saving century against England.

This is the life: Jason Holder relaxes in Grenada Photo: GETTY IMAGES

Seaweed is taking over the golden beaches of Barbados. This seaweed, or “moss” as the locals call it, has come from the Atlantic and spread to the island’s Caribbean coast.

Is it a symbol of the state of West Indian cricket? It once seemed to be a great natural resource, like the beaches of Barbados, sustainable for ever, the finest of its kind. But now the golden sand is covered with dark brown clumps in which flies incubate.

Likewise, it seems impossible that West Indian cricket will ever be restored to its splendour of the Eighties. Yet we can be confident that it will not disintegrate, and will remain competitive on the world stage, for a reason that can be summed up in two words: Jason Holder.

Holder has already survived the biggest hospital pass in modern cricket history when he was appointed captain of West Indies – the youngest ever – for their tour of South Africa and the World Cup. He was 23, had played three Tests and 21 one‑day internationals, and had to captain characters such as Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels.

Holder leaves field on a stretcher after rolling an ankle during Test with England

In their first World Cup game, West Indies lost against Ireland. Holder could have been completely fazed. Instead, he opened the bowling in their next game and led his team to a rout of Pakistan.

After a horrendous defeat against South Africa, when AB de Villiers thrashed 64 from Holder’s last two overs, and another against India, West Indies had to beat the United Arab Emirates – and forecast rain – to qualify for the knockout stages. Holder made sure they did so by bowling his 10 overs straight through to take four for 27. At least they reached the quarter‑finals, only to be 'Guptilled’ (the New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill plundering 237 not out), which is more than can be said for some countries.

However, Holder, in a sense, was groomed for stardom. As a lad he was filmed for the opening shots of Fire In Babylon, the film about the West Indies fast bowlers of the Eighties. The producers wanted someone who looked the part and came cheap: for $75 (£49) Holder posed as the assassin who would scare any batsman away except that, try as he did to scowl and look mean, any grandmother would have run to cuddle him.

“I was about 14 or 15 years old. It was on Silver Sands beach in Christchurch and I did a few scenes of running in to bowl and staring the camera down. I just thought it was an advertisement,” Holder said.

A handsome fee and share of the royalties? Holder laughs: “I think I got 75 US dollars.”

Holder’s elder brother, Andre, aimed for stardom differently. He won a basketball scholarship and spent four years in Oklahoma, Pittsburgh and Atlanta. Now Andre is back home, aged 26, not playing basketball. He has rheumatoid arthritis in his knees. Jason Holder, who is 6ft 7in, said: “I played a lot of basketball at St Michael’s school. I had a few approaches about going to the [United] States but I was always serious about cricket.”

Holder was appointed the youngest West Indies captain for tour of South Africa and World Cup

When he “starred” in the film, he was playing for Barbados Under-15s. By the time of the 2010 Youth World Cup, he was not West Indies’ official captain but he led them in a game or two, and played against Joe Root and Ben Stokes.

Part of the seaweed choking West Indies cricket is this poaching by American sports. In Barbados, it is not usually basketball, though, or baseball. Holder estimates that, “at most”, two Bajans a year take up basketball scholarships in the US – but about 50 per year go off to do track and field, volleyball and tennis.

Holder, however, has not been deflected from his ambition. His father did not play sport: he is the general manager of a company that runs a few gaming outlets and casinos. He is not related to any of the other Holders who have played cricket for Barbados. But he has an astonishing sense of purpose to go with his maturity.

There could be no more mature innings than Holder’s unbeaten 103 on the last afternoon of the first Test against England in Antigua. He came in at No 8, with almost four hours of play remaining. He not only batted flawlessly, driving England to the depths of despair, but also with flair when he spurted to his century in the penultimate over. “My mind was very clear,” he recalled. “While I was batting, my objective was just to be there at the end.

“When Kemar Roach joined me, we had basically the last hour and he said: 'We’ll break it down.’ So we broke it down in overs of five, and went from 15 to 10, then 10 to five.

“When it was down to the second-last over, I thought I could probably safely go for it. Tredwell was bowling and I thought I’d take my chance of going over the top.”

So, on 95, Holder calmly drove James Tredwell’s first ball back over his head and then drilled the third to long-off.

“I do a lot of envisualising and putting myself in certain scenarios,” Holder said. “I want to be seen, not as someone who has scored 10,000 Test runs or taken 500 wickets, but as someone who can be counted on and handle the pressure.”

He was man of the match in what was his fourth Test.

“I’m a big fan of VVS Laxman because he saved so many games for India,” Holder said. The feeling is mutual: Laxman has told Holder that he will bat at No 6 for West Indies.

In the meantime, Holder has some bowling to do, as he was picked for the first two Tests mainly as third seamer and has taken only three wickets to date.

In Grenada, he slipped spectacularly in his follow-through and sprained his left ankle, but he is in the squad for the series-deciding Test starting tomorrow .

Unlike the real stars of Fire In Babylon, Holder has yet to hit 90mph and maximise his body strength. Where is the incentive? According to the former England batsman Roland Butcher, who is now head coach at the University of the West Indies, there is no quick pitch in Barbados or in the whole of the West Indies, just rolled and baked mud.

Holder, however, is not the type to be discouraged as he pilots West Indian cricket out of the Sargasso Sea. He is also gathering around him a group of serious young men: Kraigg Brathwaite, the vice-captain who made a century in the second Test that almost denied England, and Carlos Brathwaite, no relation and a fast bowler, and Shai Hope, the next Test batsman in line. These are the future core.

Holder also wants to play county cricket in 2016, in preparation for the West Indies tour of England in 2017. He is nothing if not thorough. And West Indian cricket may be nothing without him.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Ahead of the Barbados leg of the English Test series, the students of the 2014-2015 Sport For Life Programme got an opportunity to meet with the visiting team yesterday during the presentation of a donation by the British High Commission.

Taking a short break from training at Kensington Oval, the players of the English side spent their time sowing inspiration among the youngsters.

With the British High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Victoria Dean on-hand to make a donation towards funding the remainder of the 2014-2015 year, the highlight for the charges of the programme was definitely getting a chance to talk to and run drills with the players.

Speaking to The Barbados Advocate, Chairman of Sport For Life, Brenda Pope, explained that both gestures would go a long way towards the further development of the children.

Chairman of Sport For Life Brenda Pope (left) alongside British High Commissioner to Barbados, Victoria Dean, with English cricket team members and Sport For Life Programme participants after a cheque presentation yesterday at Kensington Oval.

“This donation will go a long way to ensuring we finish this term out and then we still need to look for next year but we are always grateful. We are appreciative, not only of the money, but of the support and the things that you can’t pay for like the chance for them to interact with other cricketers from other parts of the world, and for them to have an opportunity to talk to international press. Some of them were so excited about that,” he stated.

Furthermore, it was noted that, “It’s those kind of things that money in any case, cannot buy – the exposure that we are trying to let these children have. That’s also what we are pleased and grateful to the British High Commission for – for them to get a chance to rub shoulders and to really find out what the nitty-gritty is and find out the kind of dedication and focus that these cricketers embody,” Pope said.

KOLKATA, India, CMC - West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell slammed an unbeaten half century and grabbed two wickets as Kolkata Knight Riders edged Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets with a ball to spare in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Thursday.

Russell, promoted in the batting order, scored 55 from 32 balls to get his side across the line at 169 for three wickets after CSK totaled 165 for nine wickets in 20 overs.

Russell smashed four fours and the same number of sixes teaming up with Robin Uthappa to take the game away from CSK.

He got to his half-century after hitting Dwayne Bravo for two huge sixes in the 17th over to help boost KKR to nine points in eight matches and to third place in the table.

Uthappa top scored with an unbeaten 80 which included seven fours and a six.

Earlier Russell picked up two wickets for 20 runs from his four overs as  CSK fail to get off to the ideal start losing Dwayne Smith off the first ball of the innings.

But Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja built a steady partnership for the sixth wicket to put on a run-a-ball 57 to get CSK to a decent position before Bravo was bowled off the bowling of Andre Russell.

Bravo hit four fours while scoring 30 from 32 balls while Brendon McCullum top scored with 32.

Hope, who also keeps wicket, amassed the most runs (346) at an average of 69.20 in last season's Championship.
