Barbados Nation article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Charles F. Broome will be looking to win their fourth Guardian Group Herman Griffith Primary School Cricket title when they appear in next week’s final against West Terrace Primary.

Charles F. Broome joined West Terrace in the championship match by recording a five-wicket victory over Milton Lynch yesterday,  in a match delayed by one day due to rain.

Milton Lynch were skittled out for 40 runs in 16 overs, with Caleb Massiah taking five for seven off five overs.

Some early damage was done by pint-sized pacer Brendon Walter, who moved the ball around to pick up three for eight. None of the Milton Lynch batsmen got into double figures, with extras of 23 contributing more than half the team’s total.

Milton Lynch seemed to be still in the game when their opponents slipped to ten for three before a fourth-wicket partnership of 16 between top scorer Raneico Smith and Massiah carried Charles F. Broome to the brink of victory.

Summarised scores

At Dover: Milton Lynch 40 all out in 16 overs (Caleb Massiah 5-7, Brendon Walters 3-11). Charles F. Broome 41-5 in 19.2 overs (Raneico Smith 13 n.o., Caleb Massiah 10). Charles F. Broome won by five wickets. Player of the Match: Caleb Massiah.

The top two teams from each group advance to the semi-finals at the Oval, where the group winners play the runners-up from the opposite group in a one-off match for a place in the Grand Final on Sunday, January 25 at the same venue.

Luckless Barbados hit by rain again

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Rain once again turned up to jinx Barbados Pride’s already luckless campaign, allowing a mere 13.1 overs, on the second day of their crucial third round match in the WICB Professional Cricket League against leaders Guyana Jaguars on Saturday.

The last of two rain interruptions sent players from the field at 11:30 am never to return, leaving Barbados on 33 for two in their first innings, in response to Jaguars’ 261 all out.

Barbados trail by 228 runs heading into Sunday’s penultimate day.

Resuming the day on four without loss, Barbados started positively, with Kyle Corbin (6) pulling the first ball of the day from speedster Ronsford Beaton for four.

However, Corbin survived just three more deliveries before slicing to gully where Trevon Griffith held a good catch, to leave Barbados on eight for one.

Rain then stopped play with the score on 12 for one, half-hour into the day, and when action resumed 50 minutes later, there was enough time for Guyana to make further inroads into the Barbados innings.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary Scores:

Guyana Jaguars 1st Innings: 261 All Out (91 Overs). Anthony Bramble+ 73, Shimron Hetmyer 47, Rajindra Chandrika 34, Christopher Barnwell 24; Ryan Hinds 17-5-50-4, Jomel Warrican 28-6-52-2, Dwayne Smith 12-5-20-2, Miguel Cummins 12-1-63-1.

Barbados Pride 1st Innings: 33/2 (15.1 Overs). Carlos Brathwaite* 18, Shai Hope 8, Kyle Corbin 6, . Jonathan Carter 0; Ronsford Beaton 6-0-22-1, Veerasammy Permaul 2-0-3-1, . Raymon Reifer 6.1-3-5-0, Christopher Barnwell 1-0-2-0.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Captain Carlos Brathwaite, who opened the batting, had reached 18 off 48 balls when he perished, taken at cover by fellow Barbadian Raymon Reifer off left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, with the score on 33 for two.

Jonathan Carter managed to face one delivery before the heavens opened, disappointingly ending play for the day.

At the end, Shai Hope was also unbeaten on eight.

Barbados’ first two games of the competition both finished in draws after being wrecked by rain.

In the first round, they were poised to complete victory over Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in Port of Spain before rain allowed just 14.4 overs on the final day of the contest at Queen’s Park Oval.

Last weekend, torrential rains in Bridgetown washed out play on the first three days of the second round match against Jamaica Franchise at the Windward Sports Club.

Permaul spins Jaguars to brink of win

$

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Embattled left-hander Ryan Hinds was leading a Barbados Pride rescue mission after their batting collapsed twice on the penultimate day, to hand Guyana Jaguars the advantage in their WICB Professional Cricket League match here Saturday.

Barbados were first bundled out for a paltry 101 with left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul picking up his second straight eight-wicket haul, with eight for 26.

Following on by 160 runs, Barbados Pride were once again in strife at 76 for five and plunging towards defeat before Hinds arrived to hit an unbeaten 60 and guide the visitors to 214 for seven at the close at the National Stadium at Providence.

He was helped by an even 50 from wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich but yet again the Guyana spinners wreaked havoc, with leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo claiming four for 65 and Permaul, two for 65.

The half-century knock was Hinds's 35th at first class level, and comes following a two-year absence.

Heading into the final day of the third round encounter on Monday, Barbados lead by a mere 54 runs, still very much in danger of a defeat.

Resuming the day on 33 for two, Barbados capitulated meekly to lose their last eight wickets for 68 runs, to be bowled out nearly three-quarters of an hour before lunch.

Dasher Dwayne Smith top-scored with a brazen 32 off 25 balls with four fours and a six but no other Barbados batsman made it past 20.

Barbados suffered their first blow early in the morning when Shai Hope was taken behind off Permaul, after adding two to his overnight eight, with the score on 36 for three.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary Scores:

Guyana Jaguars 1st Innings: 261 All Out (91 Overs). Anthony Bramble+ 73, Shimron Hetmyer 47, Rajindra Chandrika 34, Christopher Barnwell 24; Ryan Hinds 17-5-50-4, Jomel Warrican 28-6-52-2, Dwayne Smith 12-5-20-2, Miguel Cummins 12-1-63-1.

Barbados Pride 1st Innings: 101 All Out (42.2 Overs). Dwayne Smith 32, Carlos Brathwaite* 18, Jonathan Carter 16, Shai Hope 10; Veerasammy Permaul 15.2-5-26-8,  Devendra Bishoo 5-2-6-1, Ronsford Beaton 6-0-22-1, Raymon Reifer 9-4-9-0.

Barbados Pride 2nd Innings: 214/7 (69 Overs). Ryan Hinds 60*, Shane Dowrich+ 50, Kyle Corbin 35, Carlos Brathwaite* 14; Devendra Bishoo 20-3-65-4, Veerasammy Permaul 23-3-65-2, Christopher Barnwell 7-2-17-1, Trevon Griffith 1-1-0-0.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The visitors then flourished briefly as Smith counter-attacked in a 35-run, fourth wicket stand with left-hander Jonathan Carter who made 16.

Smith struck two successive fours off seamer Chris Barnwell before clearing long-on with Permaul. He was accelerating the Barbados scoring when he was adjudged lbw to Barnwell.

His dismissal triggered a terminal decline, with Barbados losing six wickets in quick time for 30 runs.

Embarrassingly, four wickets – Hinds (7), Dowrich (3), Ashley Nurse (0) and Jomel Warrican (0) – all fell with the score on 95, as Permaul wrecked the lower order. Three of these wickets fell to Permaul in his 15th over.

Following on, Barbados reached the safety of lunch on 28 without loss, with Kyle Corbin on 16 and Omar Phillips, 11, but suffered another slump on resumption.

In the second over after the break, Phillips was lbw to Barnwell without adding, with the score on 30 and though Corbin and Shai Hope added 28 for the second wicket, a collapse was still on the cards.

The right-handed Corbin made 35 off 53 balls in nearly 1-1/2 hours at the crease and hit four fours and a six before perishing to a catch at short-leg by Shimron Hetmyer off Permaul.

In quick time, Barbados were on the ropes, losing four wickets for 18 runs in the space of 31 balls, forcing Hinds and Dowrich into a recovery effort.

They put on 95 for the sixth wicket, with Hinds facing 126 balls in 3-1/2 hours and counting three fours and a six, and Dowrich stroking seven boundaries off 120 balls in 2-1/2 hours.

Guyana hit back late, though, when Bishoo had Dowrich caught at point by Rajendra Chandrika and Premaul prised out captain Carlos Brathwaite, lbw for 14, after he added 25 for the seventh wicket with Hinds.

Barbados Nation article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Two more young cricketing talents of Barbados, Jafari Toppin and Jonathan Drakes, have earned Lord Gavron scholarships to further hone their educational and cricketing skills for a year in Britain.

Toppin, formerly of Garrison Secondary [now Graydon Sealy] and Drakes of the Combermere School were presented with their awards on Friday at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre with Lord and Lady Gavron taking the number of recipients to 22. Ryan Nurse was the first winner in 2001.

In an event attended by president of the Barbados Cricket Association Joel Garner and family, friends and coaches of the two young cricketers, Lord Gavron indicated that he felt that over the years the one million dollars which he had used to help Barbadian cricketers was the “best well spent money”.

Garner advised the duo that they were being given opportunities which were not available to many cricketers of his era and he and the BCA were forever in the debt of Lord Gavron for his generosity.

The BCA then made a presentation to Lord Gavron as well as Sir Trevor Carmichael, who had introduced Lord Gavron to the BCA and helped to establish the scholarship process.

Smith fires Barbados to sensational win

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Dwayne Smith’s maiden first class five-wicket haul helped Barbados Pride seal an astonishing come-from-behind two-run victory over Guyana Jaguars in their third round WICB Professional Cricket League contest here Monday.

Set a paltry 69 for victory after Barbados were dismissed for 228 in their second innings inside the first half-hour of the final day, Guyana were spectacularly bundled out for 66 at the National Stadium at Providence.

Smith, who opened the bowling, grabbed five for 17 with his right-arm seam, while new-ball partner, left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds, finished with two for 21.

Part-time seamer Jonathan Carter picked up two for 13.

Only opener Rajindra Chandrika, with 30, offered any resistance and he was one of only three batsmen who made it into double figures.

Guyana were tottering on ten for four in the sixth over as Smith and Hinds shared the wickets, and the hosts never recovered, with Smith sealing victory when he trapped Veerasammy Permaul lbw for six at 11:45 am.

No such drama was envisioned when Guyana required 35 balls to wrap up the Barbados innings, after the visitors resumed at 214 for seven in their second innings.

Left-hander Ryan Hinds added just eight to his overnight 60 before being last out, caught at mid-wicket by Ronsford Beaton off seamer Chris Barnwell who finished with two for 21.

Summary Scores:

Guyana Jaguars 1st Innings: 261 All Out (91 Overs). Anthony Bramble+ 73, Shimron Hetmyer 47, Rajindra Chandrika 34, Christopher Barnwell 24; Ryan Hinds 17-5-50-4, Jomel Warrican 28-6-52-2, Dwayne Smith 12-5-20-2, Miguel Cummins 12-1-63-1.

All told, Hinds faced 143 deliveries, in just under four hours at the crease, with four fours and a six.

Starting the day hoping to extend their resistance as far into the morning as possible, Barbados managed to add 14 runs before losing their first wicket when Ashley Nurse was caught at cover by captain Vishaul Singh off left-arm spinner Permaul.

The remaining two wickets then fell with no addition to the score, as Jomel Warrican was lbw next ball to Permaul before Hinds perished six balls later.

Permaul ended with four for 75 and match figures of 12 for 101 while leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, who did not bowl on Monday, claimed four for 65.

Barbados then made early inroads. Smith had Trevon Griffith caught at mid-wicket by Kyle Corbin for one with the score on two in the second over of the innings, and Hinds then prised out Shimron Hetmyer five balls later to a catch at backward point by Jonathan Carter without scoring.

The in-form Narsingh Deonarine missed a sweep at Hinds and was adjudged lbw for without scoring, and when captain Vishaul Singh was bowled by Smith also without scoring, Guyana were tottering on 10 for four and in clear danger.

Chandrika then threatened to turn the game back in Guyana’s favour, anchoring two small partnerships to pull his side around. He put on 24 for the fifth wicket with Barbadian Raymon Reifer (11) and another 16 for the sixth wicket with Barnwell (12).

The left-handed Reifer had struck two fours and lasted 26 balls and nearly half-hour when he gave Corbin at catch at mid-off off captain and seamer Carlos Brathwaite.

Barbados then grabbed the prized wicket of Chandrika, caught at backward square by Warrican off Carter at 50 for six.

There still more than enough wickets and time in hand for Guyana to reach their target, especially with Barnwell at the wicket, but Barbados ensured there would be no such celebrations from the home side.

Once they got Barnwell, though, the floodgates opened and the last four wickets fell for nine runs.

Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Celebrations spilled well into Independence Day in St. Philip, as for the first time ever, a community team had come away as the champions of the Grantley Adams International Airport T20 Tapeball Competition.

Defending champions Caribbean Aircraft Handling – Ramp were thwarted in their attempt to repeat in Rices on Saturday night by Gem Stars, in a match that kept the Ramp fans and supporters biting their nails.

Winning the toss and opting to field, Gem Stars kept the runs down for Ramp with only one player making it into double-figures. Albert King had the only boundary of the innings, as he got up to 18 off 36 balls before gifting his wicket to Renaldo Brathwaite. Ramp limped to 91 for the loss of eight in their 20 overs, but not before Rachid O’neale helped himself to two wickets for 11 runs in a four-wicket spell.

With their sights set on 92 for victory, Gem Stars did not start too badly, as their opener Fabian Batson ended up taking the Man of the Match title with a sound knock of 24. He hit one six and one four on his way to the total, as the first four wickets fell before he was run out by Amory Holder. Brathwaite also had a contribution to make with the bat, and he posted 12 off 18 balls.

After Batson’s dismissal, Gem Stars were well on their way to victory (79 for 5), but suffered a bottom order collapse as Zachery McCaskie (3), Kenroy Bennett (0) and Dwayne Alleyne (0) all went in the space of two runs. Gem Stars were able to hold out and brought home the two-wicket win at 92 for eight with 28 balls to spare.

Crandon "cannot believe" loss chasing 69

Cricinfo article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Guyana coach Esuan Crandon still "cannot believe" his side lost by two runs on Monday against Barbados chasing a tiny target of 69 runs in the Professional Cricket League.

In a dramatic sequence of events in the third-round match played at Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana forced Barbados to follow-on but failed to last the first session on the fourth and final day as Dwayne Smith picked up his maiden five-for.

"It was very, very disappointing to take the loss. We played three excellent days of cricket and then we lost the game in one session," Crandon told ESPNcricinfo. "The Barbados bowlers utilised the conditions well as the ball was moving around. A couple of careless, irresponsible shots from our batsmen cost us the game as well."

Crandon said the players were aware of the historic significance of the victory: Guyana have not defeated Barbados in Guyana since 1984 and missed out on a chance to snap the 30-year losing streak. "We knew that. I cannot believe what happened yesterday."

Speaking to Stabroek News Guyana captain Vishaul Singh admitted complacency was a factor while chasing the small target. Crandon agreed, too. "Probably a little bit of complacency crept in at the moment. Not only that, there was a bit of nerves too. We had wanted to chase down the total in a positive manner but we did not get the start we wanted. We lost four wickets for 10 runs on the board."

Crandon also cited the weary and breaking pitch as a crucial factor. "It was a difficult fourth-day wicket to bat on. There was wear and tear in the wicket, uneven bounce, ball keeping low, very low. Dwayne Smith was getting the ball to move, too. I am not making any excuses. Dwayne bowled well. But the pitch really helped him as well."

However Reon King, the former Guyana and West Indies fast bowler, who was the match referee, said he could not find any fault in the pitch. The nature of defeat raised a lot of eyebrows, but both the WICB and King said the only untoward thing was the poor batting by the Guyanese batsmen. "The pitch is fine. It was a normal four-day pitch. In my opinion it was just a collapse in batting," King said.

Despite the defeat Guyana have 39 points, enough to top the tournament table after three matches. They travel to Trinidad to play their next match starting Friday before the tournament takes a break. The final six matches will be played from February. "We also recognize the miss. Yesterday was a big miss for us because if we had won that game we could have been about 15 points clear of the second-place team," Crandon said.

Singh blames complacency for shock loss

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Guyana Jaguars’ skipper Vishaul Singh has blamed complacency as the reason for his side’s shocking two-run loss to Barbados Pride in the third round of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League on Monday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

“We played three very good days of cricket up until that hour…but I’d say our batting was just a little bit complacent and we got hit and by the time we decided the game was on it was too late,” Singh told this publication on Tuesday.

Chasing a meager 69 with more than two and half sessions available on the final day, Guyana Jaguars slipped to 10-4 then 57-7 before being rolled over for 66. The experienced all-rounder Dwayne Smith used his nagging medium-pacers to good effect, slicing through the hosts batting to finish career-best figures of 5-17.

Prior to that, Guyana Jaguars had dominated the match, scoring 261 and then dismissing the Bajans for 101 to enforce the follow-on. Barbados Pride made 228 in their second innings.

The defeat for the Jaguars followed comprehensive victories over the Leeward Islands Hurricanes and the Windward Islands Volcanoes, and despite the swift turnaround in fortunes, Singh still believes his side is in a strong position as leaders of the points table.

“The camp is still in good spirit you know. It’s one of those things that can happen to anyone on a given day, but we are still on top of the table and we have an entire season ahead of us,” the left-hander, who was leading Guyana for first time, reckoned.

Looking ahead to the fourth round encounter this weekend against hosts Trinidad and Tobago Red Force at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain, Singh refused to be despondent, but is rather optimistic of his side rebounding from the loss.

“Our chances are good. We are playing very good cricket as a team and we are backing ourselves against any opposition at any venue,” Singh concluded.

The Guyana Jaguars lead the points table after three rounds with 39, five more than Jamaica. Barbados Pride are on 27, followed by Trinidad and Tobago Red Force (23), Windward Islands Volcanoes (22) and the Leeward Islands Hurricanes (07).

WICB PCL Regional 4-Day Round 4 bulletin

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Every team has a reason to approach this weekend’s fourth round of matches in the WICB Professional Cricket League Regional 4-Day Tournament with purpose.

Following the contest of these matches, the Tournament will take a near two-month hiatus due to the Christmas/New Year’s holiday season and the shift to the NAGICO Super50 Tournament, so teams will jostle to put themselves in a favourable position.

This round will test the relative strengths of each team against their opponents, as Windward Islands Volcanoes meet Barbados Pride at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex in St. Vincent, the Jamaica Franchise hosts Leeward Islands Hurricanes at Sabina Park and Trinidad & Tobago Red Force welcome leaders Guyana Jaguars at Queen’s Park Oval.

In St. Vincent: Both teams will be looking to ride the wave of victories in the previous match that spurred their season after early setbacks.

The Volcanoes rebounded from two straight defeats in their first two matches to roll over the Hurricanes in a home match at the Grenada National Stadium, and the Pride defied the weather that has dogged all three of their matches to stun the Jaguars with a sensational, two-run loss, defending a modest target of 69, at the Guyana National Stadium.

Recent results make this match very interesting, as the two teams have done well on each other’s briar patch which does not bode well for the hosts.

Four of the Volcanoes’ six victories over the Pride in the modern era of West Indies first-class matches have come since the turn of the century and all have been on the road in Barbados, where they have won the last two fixtures between the two sides.

But the Pride have won all but one of the seven matches the two sides have played in the Windwards since the turn of the century, including twice at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex.

The Pride travelled with an unchanged squad from Guyana, but the Volcanoes have brought in talented batsman Kavem Hodge following the elevation of veteran opener Devon Smith to the West Indies Test squad in South Africa.

In Kingston: Two sides at the opposite ends of the standings will seek the same result, but take different approaches.

The Jamaica Franchise, flying high from their victory over the Red Force in Port of Spain, face the Hurricanes, aiming to put together a complete performance that will turn their season around.

History favours the home team. They have won the last five matches between the two teams, including twice at Sabina Park.

But he visitors however, can take comfort in the knowledge that their previous victory over their hosts came at the same venue five years ago.

Both sides have made changes to their line-ups.

The Jamaica Franchise have brought left-handed opener John Campbell in to replace Nkrumah Bonner and Gavon Brown is included following the elevation of fellow left-arm fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell to the West Indies Test squad in South Africa.

Leewards have included former captain Steve Liburd and heavy-set all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall for a bit more experience, and spinner Colin Hamer has been called up for the first time. They replace Anthony Martin, Akeem Saunders and Jacques Taylor.

In Port of Spain: Both teams will be looking for a shot of confidence, following defeats in their previous match, when the Red Force sunk to a deflating, second straight defeat on home soil this season against the Jamaica Franchise and the Jaguars crashed to gut-wrenching, two-run loss against the Pride, chasing a modest 69 for victory.

Recent results favour the Red Force. They have won three of the 10 matches between the two sides over the last decade including twice at this venue and have held the first innings advantage in five of the six matches that ended in a draw, with the other ending in a no-result.

Also in favour of the Red Force is that the Jaguars have not won a match at any venue in the two-island republic for quarter of a century and, more precisely, at Queen’s Park Oval for 27 years. In fact, the Jaguars have just two wins in the modern era of West Indies first-class matches here.

The visitors have travelled with an unchanged squad from the previous round, but the hosts have welcomed back leg-spin all-rounder Yannic Cariah following a toe injury and he will replace the uncapped Kerwin Sirju.

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, CMC – Rookies Roston Chase and Shai Hope struck half-centuries as Barbados Pride kept Windward Islands Volcanoes in the field for the entire opening day of their fourth round match here Friday.

Winning the toss and opting to bat first in the WICB Professional Cricket League contest, Barbados finished the day on 230 for five, to take the early initiative at Arnos Vale.

Chase was unbeaten on 56 while Hope carved out his maiden first class half-century when he scored exactly 50. Left-handed opener Omar Phillips was going well before he was forced to retire hurt for 38 after being struck in the head.

Captain Carlos Brathwaite was unbeaten on 25 and Jonathan Carter also chipped in with 25.

Barbados owed their position to an unbroken 60-run stand between Chase and Brathwaite, after the visitors slipped to 170 for five in the last session.

Chase has faced 151 balls in 167 minutes and struck three fours while Brathwaite has lasted 67 balls in 112 minutes, and registered two fours and a six.

Left-arm spinner Alston Bobb led the hosts’ bowling attack with three for 62.

Barbados suffered an early setback inside the first half hour when they lost Kyle Corbin in the day’s sixth over, caught at the wicket off left-arm seamer Kenroy Peters for 19 with the score on 24.

The right-hander struck four fours in his 25 balls at the crease.

Hope and Phillips then added 56 for the second wicket, as Barbados rebuilt their innings in a healthy stand.

While Hope faced 129 balls in just under three hours at the crease with five fours, Phillips counted a four and two sixes in an attractive 70-ball knock that lasted 103 minutes.

However, Phillips’s innings ended in unfortunate circumstances when he was struck in the head by a drive from Hope, while at the non-striker’s end.

Carter joined Hope to extend the second wicket partnership to 109 overall, and take Barbados to lunch at 89 for one.

After the break, Carter flourished and looked to be getting into his stride when he became Bobb’s first wicket of the innings. He hit four fours off 72 balls in 1-1/2 hours at the crease.

Hope, meanwhile, strolled to his half-century in style, pulling seamer Mervin Mathew to the mid-wicket boundary and then following up by whipping the same bowler to the ropes again.

He was one of two wickets to fall in the space of 15 balls with just three runs added, as he quickly followed Carter.

Chase put on 35 for the fourth wicket with wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich who made 13 before being bowled by Bobb, and two balls later, Dwayne Smith was taken at mid-on by Shane Shillingford without scoring.

Struggling at 170 for five, Chase and Brathwaite ensured there was no more damage done as they steadied the innings in an enterprising stand.
