Brathwaite aims to conquer spin attack

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC - West Indies cricketer Kraigg Brathwaite says he is hard at work seeking to improve his ability to conquer spin bowling after achieving a batting milestone in Barbados.

The 22 year old Barbadian batsman says his current work ethic forms part of his plans to cement his spot on the regional side.

Some West Indies cricketers have often faced criticism for their batting performances against the spinners.

“I know I will never be perfect, but I am still working very hard,” declared Brathwaite in an interview with Barbados Today.

“I have been doing a lot of work against the spinners trying to play them as best as I can. I am trying to be more confident. Also my defence is quite good now”.

Brathwaite recently became the first player to score six hundreds in the Barbados Cricket Association’s Sagicor Cup 50-Over Tournament.

He went past the five each scored by former Spartan, Barbados and West Indies opener Philo Wallace,  the Windward Islands and University of the West Indies’ Romel Currency and Barbados and West Indies batsman Dwayne Smith.

Haynes - Pollard can be future captain

Cricket Country article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Desmond Haynes formed a great opening partnership with Gordon Greenidge when West Indies were at the pinnacle of world cricket.

Haynes believes that he would have enjoyed Twenty20 (T20) cricket, and that Greenidge would have been fantastic at it. Nishad Pai Vaidya caught up with Haynes on the sidelines of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), where he is a mentor with the Barbados Tridents.

Desmond Haynes is one of the greatest opening batsmen in the history of the game. In partnership with Gordon Greenidge, he formed a lethal combination at the top and was an integral part of Clive Lloyd’s world beating West Indies team.

He is currently the mentor of the Barbados Tridents at the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2014. Barbados Tridents prepare to face Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final of the CPL 2014.

In an exclusive chat with CricketCountry, Haynes talks about T20 cricket, its impact, his foundation and a lot more.

Excerpts:

CricketCountry (CC): What has been your experience at CPL as a mentor? What has that role brought about for you?

Desmond Haynes (DH): It has been a great experience. My role as mentor is to ensure that I assist in any way possible and to discuss how to play the shortest version of the game. I didn’t play T20 cricket, but have been very successful as a one-day cricketer.

I know what it is to play the short version of the game and believe that the guys are learning from my experience and used it to the best of their abilities. You’ve got this Barbados Tridents side with some young Barbadians, who would have heard of me and know my role, and you have the internationals as well. So far we have had a very good relationship and that is also because of some good work by our coach here, Robin Singh.

CC: What has been the secret to Barbados Tridents’ consistency through the CPL 2014?

DH: Last year, when I was coach, we started by winning four or five games, but we didn’t do very well moving towards the end. But this year, we have been more consistent at the back-end of the tournament. I think it is because of Kieron Pollard’s captaincy as well. He is one guy who would try a lot of things on the ground. He has shown great leadership and hopefully, I would like to see him being the captain of the West Indies at some stage.

CC: We hear that you have started a foundation. What do you wish to do through that?

DH: It is the Desmond Haynes Foundation and the aim is to raise enough money to help two young players finish their college or university education. They would obviously have a little bit of a cricketing background and one hopes, if they are successful, they come back and make a contribution to the foundation in years to come. My aim is to make sure I raise enough money through any appearances etc. I am trying to find people who can donate funds to the foundation so that we can get two young Barbadians with a cricketing background to go and finish their education.

CC: Would you have been keen to play the T20 format? How would you have adjusted to this game?

DH: Oh, certainly! I did have the opportunity of playing a few games in England (10 and 30-over encounters for Lashings XI), though one or two were rained out. The way I used to play, I believe I would have been a handful in T20 cricket. If you can play the shorter version of the game and you open the batting, it is a lot easier. In T20 cricket, batting early on gives you more opportunities than batting in the later part of the line-up.

CC: When one-day cricket came about, did you find it difficult to adapt to the shorter version?

DH: No, it was never difficult for us. We came at a time when one-day cricket was played during a Test series. For example, when we toured Australia, we used to play one Test match and then two fifty-over games followed by a Test match and so forth. It was a situation where if you were smart enough, you should be able to adapt.

CC: What about T20 cricket and its impact?

DH:  Yes, you have to give credit to the guys who play the modern game. The likes of Pollard, Chris Gayle and the other great T20 players, you’ve got to give them credit as they’ve played it very well. The other impact I see in modern cricket is the fielding has improved. That was because of T20 version. It has helped improve the game overall in some aspects.

CC: How much of an impact has limited-over cricket had on opening the batting in Test cricket? In recent times, you’ve had attacking openers like Matthew Hayden and Virender Sehwag to name a few.

DH: Yes it is how you adapt. I don’t think T20 cricket would have interfered with anybody with the way how they play Tests. This is because in Tests for example if you have the ball moving around, you have more time to be patient (to get in).  But, now if you have a Test match where you have to chase 300 odd, there is a possibility that the teams would get it given the way they play T20 cricket these days.

CC: You formed a great opening partnership with Gordon Greenidge. How would you have seen the pair of you don that role in T20 cricket?

DH: I think Gordon Greenidge would have been a fantastic T20 cricketer. Imagine, you got Gordon and myself opening the batting and then Viv (Sir Viv Richards) coming at No 3 — that would be a good batting line-up. I think we would have adapted properly. And then Clive Lloyd to come. Batting in the first few overs, you can play some good cricket shots. I think West Indies would have been a very good side.

Lloyd impressed with Regional U-19s

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - The new convenor of the West Indies selection panel was recently in Guyana observing proceedings in the just concluded Regional Under-19 tournaments and has remarked that he is pleased with what he has seen.

Speaking to commentator Ian Bishop during the match between Jamaica Tallawahs and Guyana Amazon Warriors on Thursday, Lloyd said he was quite interested in watching the Under-19s because they are the other set of players that will represent the West Indies and that he was quite impressed.

“There were quite a few players that I saw and we have contracts coming out and I am sure that some of them would have earned one or two.”

Lloyd had recently indicated that youth development will be his primary focus in helping revive West Indies cricket. He had that in order to ensure West Indies’ ascension in the ICC Test rankings, emphasis must be placed on honing the potential of youngsters at the regional under-19 level, something he felt was undervalued in the past.

“I think it Is important because you want to pick the right people and not to say that others weren’t doing so but looking at the Under-19s, I think we have a lot of talent around, it is just about harnessing that talent and getting them to that situation where they could perform well at the highest level,” the legendary former West Indies captain told Bishop.

There were a number of outstanding performances in the recent U-19 tournaments especially in the Guyana team that ended up as champions of both the Three-day and One Day competitions.

Guyana and West Indies Under-19 opener Shimron Hetmyer carted off the bulk of the individual awards having dominated the tournament with the bat.

The Berbician left-hander racked up 321 runs in six innings, the most by a single batsman. He was also rewarded for the highest individual score (123), as well as the being adjudged the Most Valuable Player.

Akeel Seetal of Trinidad and Tobago was the highest wicket-taker while Romaine Morris of Jamaica was the wicket-keeper with the most dismissals.

Guyana’s Kemo Paul was also superb with bat and ball while batsman Tagenarine Chanderpaul was also impressive.

Speaking to cricinfo recently, Lloyd also stressed that West Indies needed to be more formidable and mentally stronger to regain respectability in Tests. West Indies are currently ranked eighth in the ICC Test rankings and have not won a series against a top-eight side since August 2012.

Following his retirement from playing the game after a career that included 110 Tests and 87 One-day Internationals between 1966 and 1985, Lloyd has served West Indies and international cricket in various ways.

He has been a West Indies coach, manager and board director, and currently serves on the WICB’s debriefing panel which assesses team performances following series and tours.

He has also served the International Cricket Council, the sport’s World governing body, as a match referee and head of its cricket committee.

Empire romp to fourth straight win with a day to spare, centuries for Renaldo Brathwaite, Rampersaud

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - ICBL Empire are on a roll, significantly stepping up their quest to make their 100th anniversary year a truly memorable one.

Starved of the major BCA league title since 2004 and despite fielding a virtual second string side with the majority of the regular team now touring England, Empire crushed LIME by seven wickets with a day to spare to record their fourth win in as many matches in the 2014 Elite division championship.

Their success on home turf at Bank Hall today resulted in 18 points and propelled them to 75 points.

And based on the likely results of the other matches in this series listed as the fifth but effectively the fourth (the second round, originally scheduled for June 21, 28 and 29, has been put back to October 18, 25 and 26 after it clashed with a late decision by the West Indies Cricket Board to play the third and final Test against New Zealand at Kensington Oval instead of in Guyana), Empire could open up a massive 31-point advantage going into the next round at Bank Hall when they will be back to full strength against Sagicor Life UWI, who were champions for four consecutive years (2009-2012).

On a day when the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) opening pair of Renaldo Brathwaite and Mario Rampersaud hit centuries in a splendid, if chancy, opening partnership of 204 in 47.4 overs against Guardian General Barbados Youth who are battling to avoid defeat at the Lester Vaughan ground, Cane Garden, draws were destined for the matches featuring three teams all bunched on the same number of points (33) in second position after the last round - Massy Stores Spartan, CounterPoint Wanderers and Brathwaite Construction/Republic Bank St. Catherine - while UWI were in a strong position to beat ESA Field Pickwick.

Diminutive all-rounder Brathwaite made 115 - his third century at this level and his first since 2009 when he scored two tons, also for BDFSP, while left-hander Rampersaud recorded his first ever in scoring exactly 100 after making his debut in 2008 for St. Catherine as a schoolboy at Lodge. He next represented Barbados Youth for three seasons before joining BDFSP in 2012.

BDFSP rattled up 307 for three declared - a first innings lead of 117 - and then reduced Barbados Youth to 61 for two at the close.

The centuries by Brathwaite and Rampersaud lifted the number for the season to 15 with three batsmen, whose first names all begin with 'K' - Kyle Hope of Pickwick, UWI's Kyle Corbin and Kenroy Williams of St. Catherine - scoring two each.

At Bank Hall:

One day after seven of the Empire players who featured in their first three matches were celebrating a massive 100-run win over an MCC XI in an historic one-day match at Lord's as part of the club's 100th anniversary celebrations, the "reserves" were busy ensuring that they would be no slip up in the amazing runaway lead at the top of the ten-team table.

Empire declared at their overweek 179 for nine - a first innings lead of 117 - and soon had LIME limping on 53 for seven before skipper Randy Thomas and all-rounder Chad Batson led a spirited fightback with a partnership of 98 on either side of tea.

Thomas, who went to the crease at No. 3, topscored with 71 which came in 211 minutes off 148 balls and contained nine threes and two fours, while Batson made 54 in 100 minutes off 77 deliveries, striking seven threes and three fours.

LIME were eventually bowled out for 168, setting Empire 52 to win with at least 17 overs remaining in the day.

Empire duly reached their target in 14.1 overs with pacer Batson taking all three wickets for 21 runs off five overs.

The other wins for Empire this season have been against Pickwick (by an innings and 62 runs at Foursquare Oval); St. Catherine (by an innings and nine runs at Bank Hall) - both before tea on the third and final day - and by one wicket over Spartan in the derby at Queen's Park, late on the third day.

At 3Ws Oval:

UWI are well placed to beat Pickwick, whose batting flattered to deceive after amassing the second highest total of the season - 385 for six declared in the first innings - against defending champions CGI Maple at Foursquare Oval in the previous series.

Starting the day on one without loss in reply to UWI's first innings 393 for five declared, Pickwick lost their first three wickets with 24 runs on the board, including the season's top batsman and skipper Kyle Hope for nought before reaching 104 for three at tea as the gifted Shai Hope, younger brother of Kyle, and fellow former Queen's College student Rohan Ryan were rebuilding the innings.

The pair put on 97 before both fell in quick succession - Shai Hope for 63 off 138 balls including five boundaries and Ryan for 42.

Clint St. Hill (22) and an attacking Shane Jones, who made 57 with three fours and the same number of sixes, then added 63 for the sixth wicket before the last four wickets tumbled in quick succession as Pickwick were dismissed for 210 in 69.5 overs, batting with one player short in left-arm spinner Che Layne, who fractured his arm while fielding on the opening day.

Veteran off-spinner Ryan Austin took four for 64 off 19 overs and pacer Dawayne Sealy, three for 34 off 14 overs.

Following on with a deficit of 183, Pickwick were six for one.

At Dayrells Road:

First innings points to add to batting and bowling points will be the main focus in what has been a high-scoring battle.

Responding to St. Catherine's 382 for nine declared, Wanderers closed on 259 for six off 69 overs.

It means the home side must score quickly in the next six overs if they want to get the further 41 runs needed for maximum four batting points, which St. Catherine achieved on the first day when they reached 305 for seven off 74 overs.

Today, Kenroy Williams took his overweek score of 109 to 123. All told, he batted for 253 minutes, faced 170 balls and struck 11 fours and two sixes in his ninth century at this level and second in succession.

Windward Islands player Alston Bobb, a Vincentian, who resumed on 19, made 44 not out and Ulric Batson added a brisk 29.

Seamer Mali Marshall, son of the late Barbados captain and West Indies fast bowling ace, Malcolm Marshall, was the leading wicket-taker with three for 87 off 19 overs.

In Wanderers' response, national four-day skipper and West Indies opener Kraigg Brathwaite sustained his rich form in both the BCA league and one-day competitions by scoring 81 in 131 minutes off 103 balls with eight boundaries.

There were also solid knocks from Jonathan Drakes (63), Jason Greene (49) and Renaldo Arthur (41). Drakes and Greene featured in a fourth-wicket stand of 96.

Off-spinner and captain Shamar Cooke picked up two for 29 off six overs.

At Trents:

Unless there is bad batting or excellent bowling by either side, a draw is also in the making.

Maple, whose batting has generally struggled this season, were bowled out for 211 in reply to Spartan's first innings total of 222 as they were confronted by a four-pronged spin attack.

Former captain Renaldo Parris hit the topscore of 37 and Haroon Austin made 34.

Leg-spinner Aamir Thomas took three for 32, off-spinner Jameel Stuart, three for 52 and left-armer Andre Marshall, two for 51.

Spartan will resume their second innings on five without loss.

At Lester Vaughan, Cane Garden:

Resuming today on 29 off six overs after Barbados Youth had scored 190 all out in their first innings, BDFSP took advantage of a few missed chances and a a weakened side as the main players were competing in the just concluded regional Under-19 three-day and one-day tournaments in Guyana.

By tea, the score was 192 without loss off 47 overs with Renaldo Brathwaite on 103 after reaching his century in 156 minutes off 147 balls with 12 fours and one six, while Mario Rampersaud was on 85.

Brathwaite's 115 took 172 minutes before he was first out. He received 155 balls and counted 12 fours and three sixes, while Rampersaud occupied the crease for 191 minutes, faced 153 balls and had 11 fours and one six.

Left-hander Antonio Greenidge also enjoyed himself by blasting an unbeaten 62 off only 33 balls with five sixes and our fours.

Barbados Youth will resume on 61 for two.

Barbados Nation article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - History will be created today, when the young lads from Combermere and Queen’s College grace the field at Kensington Oval.

It will be the first time the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) LIME Under-15 competition final will be played at the “Mecca”. The three-day encounter will commence at noon on the first day and at 11 a.m. on the next two days.

The sides are meeting in the Cup final for the first time. It is the fourth consecutive final for two-time defending champions Nicholls Baking Combermere and their 11th overall, a record. They have also won the title an unrivalled seven times.

The competition, formerly named after BET and then Cable & Wireless, is now in its 29th year.

Queen’s College have reached this stage twice before. They triumphed in 2008 against Coleridge & Parry but they went under to Lodge in 2001.

The first innings of the match is limited to 35 overs a-side and the second innings is played under normal conditions.

The teams advanced with contrasting results in the semi-finals. Queen’s College defeated Milo Lodge by six wickets and Combermere took first innings lead against Alleyne in a draw.

With both teams unbeaten for the season, this match promises to be close.

Combermere’s batting revolves around Shian Brathwaite, fresh from a hundred (106) in the semi-final, captain Shakkae Marshall, Kofie Gilkes, Indal Persaud and David Scott. The bowling will have a quartet of off-spinners in the form of Marshall, Persaud, Zidan Clarke and Anthony Manning-Merritt.

Queen’s College’s skipper Ajani Waterman led from the front with two good innings during the semis and will be looking to sustain his form.

Other batsmen expected to feature are Nico Reifer, Mekhail Marshall, Kayode Miller and Jamahl Burke.

One Queen’s College player to look out for is left-arm swing bowler Ajani Batson, who bagged five for 28 in the first innings of the semi-final. He swings the ball back into the right handers consistently. He will share the new ball with either Ajani Ince or the other medium-pacers Reifer and Burke. Spin will come from Marshall, Deshon Mayers and Darian Trotman.

Teams:

Combermere (from): Shakkae Marshall (captain), Shian Brathwaite, Avery Chandler, Zidan Clarke, Kofie Gilkes, Indal Persaud, Lamar Springer, Anthony Manning-Merritt, David Scott, Kastun Stoute, Jonathan Doughlin, Nicholas Austin, Tryese Brathwaite, Seth Agard, Kia Rollins, Darren Cuffy.

Runaway leaders Empire set for big clash with UWI in BCA Elite division championship

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - As predicted after they squeezed LIME by seven wickets in two days to record their fourth win on the trot in rushing to 75 points, ICBL Empire have now opened a massive 31-point lead at the top of the 2014 BCA Elite division championship table.

And fittingly, Empire's opponents in the next series at the cosy Bank Hall ground as they remain on course for the title in their 100th anniversary year, and which has eluded them since 2004, are second-placed Sagicor Life UWI.

UWI are the most dominant team in recent years with four successive titles but their only victory this season was achieved on the third and final day of Series 5 on Sunday by ten wickets over ESA Field Pickwick at 3Ws Oval.

There were two other victories as well on Sunday.

Against the odds, defending champions CGI Maple, spurred by off-spinners Renaldo Parris and Ramon Greaves who shared nine wickets, came from behind to sensationally send Massy Stores Spartan tumbling to the season's lowest total of 62 all out en route to an eight-wicket triumph at Trents, while BDFSP beat beleaguered Guardian General Barbados Youth by five wickets at the Lester Vaughan ground, Cane Garden.

Brathwaite Construction/Republic Bank St. Catherine gained first innings lead over CounterPoint Wanderers at Dayrells Road.

Empire's win over LIME was at Bank Hall.

Following second-placed UWI on 44 points, the next four teams - Maple, St. Catherine, Spartan and BDFSP - are all bunched on 42 points.

UWI are the only other side boasting of such an impressive record as Empire so early in the season since bonus points for batting and bowling were introduced in 2007.

In 2012, en route to capturing their fourth title (they shared it with Spartan in 2010) after being admitted to the top league six years earlier, UWI ruthlessly won their first five matches and were champions by the end of the penultimate round with a 40-point advantage over second-placed Empire.

After four rounds that season, UWI had a 25-point advantage over three other teams - Empire, Pickwick and the now demoted Carlton - as they counted 72 points.

Ultimately, they won seven of their nine matches to finish with 146 points - 47 more than runners-up Empire.

Following is a recap of play on the third and final day of Series 5 matches on Sunday:

At 3Ws Oval:

UWI were always on course for victory but were stretched by a determined Pickwick who again batted with one player short in spinner Che Layne, who sustained a fractured hand on the very first day while diving to stop a ball in the outfield.

Resuming on six for one after following-on with a deficit of 183, Pickwick reached 111 for five off 48 overs at tea with Rohan Ryan batting defiantly on 29.

Ryan and Clint St. Hill, helped by a couple missed chances, added 68 for the sixth wicket before St. Hill fell for 36.

They were eventually bowled out for 185 in 78.1 overs with Ryan hitting the topscore of 53 not out off 184 balls with one four and one six following his first innings 42.

Fast bowler Dawayne Sealy took four for 24 for a match haul of seven for 58, while left-arm spinner Kavem Hodge, who picked up three wickets of the first four wickets, finished with three for 31.

Needing three to win off six overs, Kyle Corbin, who hit his first-ever double-century (203) in the first innings total of 393 for five declared, smashed a six off left-arm pacer Adeko Collymore.

At Trents:

Off-spinners Renaldo Parris and Ramon Greaves gave Spartan a dose of the medicine the Queen's Park side would traditionally inflict on other teams.

Resuming on five without loss after an 11-run first innings lead, Spartan were dismissed for 62 in 31.3 overs.

Parris, brought on as the last of five bowlers, grabbed five for seven off six overs, while Greaves took four for 22 off 15.3 overs.

Requiring 74 for victory, Maple lost Jed Yearwood without a run scored for but reached the target in 17.2 overs.

Parris was again the topscorer with an unbeaten 36.

At Lester Vaughan, Cane Garden:

Barbados Youth did put up a fight but still suffered a five-wicket defeat - their third of the season.

From an overnight 61 for two after they were led on first innings by 117, Barbados Youth rallied to 137 for seven off 63 overs at tea with Andrew Clarke and Deswin Currency showing some guts.

Clarke soon fell for 35 but Currency continued the fight and topscored with 40 in a total of 177 all out in 86.3 overs.

Set 61 to win in 16 overs, BDFSP made 64 for five off 10.2 overs to register their first win of the season.

At Dayrells Road:

St. Catherine won the battle for first innings points in a match which was always destined for a draw following the first two days.

Resuming on 259 for six off 69 overs, Wanderers added only seven runs while losing one wicket in the first six overs which would determine whether they could force a maximum fourth batting point or risk losing wickets to give St. Catherine more bowling points.

In the end, the home side made 303 all out off 85.2 overs.

St. Catherine were bowled out for 149 off 37.4 overs in the second innings and that was that.

Opener Shane Proverbs topscored with 46 - easily his best knock in five innings this season, having failed to reach double-figures in the others.

Left-arm spinner Chad Clarke-Reifer took six for 30 off 13.4 overs and off-spinner Kemar Craigg, three for 44 off nine overs.

George Linton lived for cricket

Barbados Cricket Association article.

The following is a tribute by Keith Holder on the passing of former Spartan and Barbados player George Linton, who also served as a Barbados junior and senior selector.

It was first carried in Holder’s weekly column, Hitting Out, in the on-line newspaper Barbados Today on Friday, August 15.

It was with great sadness that while battling with my own grief of losing my dear beloved wife Dianne to illness just over three weeks ago, I was informed early yesterday morning of the passing of George Linton, the former Spartan First division captain and Barbados leg-spinning all-rounder, who gave his all to cricket in so many different areas.

As tributes poured in for the 58-year-old Linton, I knew it would be a day or rather a long night of special homework for me from a local domestic perspective to research his statistics. That entailed digging into some old, tattered “exercise” books with endless “dog-ears” as well as some hardback books containing endless scorecards of BCA First division matches and team averages, which I have proudly kept throughout my three-and-and-a-half decades as a sports journalist.

One must understand that Linton was not only a cricketer who came through the national Under-19 ranks with a base in community competitions for the Friendship Youth Group, which took part in the popular but now defunct Barbados Youth Council tournaments, but also the role he would later play as a cricket coach at the National Sports Council (NSC) for over 25 years and his service as a Barbados junior and senior selector, rising to the post of chairman.

As a selector and true cricket man, he journeyed virtually all over the island to scout talent and follow matches. And as far as the NSC was concerned, he cherished the annual Primary Schools’ competition.

Whether you care to call him George or Georgie, he was an unmistakable figure with his portly size and features in particular resembling the great Jamaican actor and comedian Oliver Samuels. In fact, in typical Bajan parlance, it was suggested in some quarters that “someone stepped out” in relation to the features of George and Oliver.

Georgie also did radio commentaries on local domestic cricket and had a taste at the first-class level as well. His style was almost unique, twirling his tongue to pronounce some words and even at times sounding as though he was crying. It was just his way.

In 26 first-class matches following his debut in 1982 against the Windward Islands at Kensington Oval in the then Shell Shield championship, he sent down 764.4 overs (4588 balls) including 145 maidens and took 78 wickets for 2321 runs at 29.75 runs apiece with five five-wicket hauls and a best of five for 35. And in 38 innings, nine of which were not outs, he scored 734 runs with a highest of 83 including five half-centuries at an average of 25.31.

George Lester Lincoln Linton was born November 12, 1955 at Waverley Cot, St. George and according to his brother Louis, died in his sleep at his home in Friendship Gap, Hothersal Turning, St. Michael hours after watching the first day of the BCA LIME Under-15 semi-final match between Queen’s College and Lodge on Wednesday, ironically at the Friendship ground, home of his old club, Yorkshire. The family had moved to ‘The Turning” when George was about aged five.

I was aware of his most recent illness by way of Louis and the fact that he was hospitalised for three weeks from July 20th. When I last saw Louis on August 5th - the eve of my wife’s funeral - when Louis attended the viewing of her body, he indicated that George was “coming around” and would soon leave hospital. He was released from hospital last Saturday.

Therefore, it was with shock when I heard of his passing.

As host of Mid Wicket, The Real Cricket Show, which is aired on the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation radio station 100.7 FM on Tuesday nights, I can state that George was by far the easiest person I could approach even at the last minute to be a guest and he would readily accept. He loved to talk and discuss cricket.

In fact, when I was first asked to host the programme in early 2011, George was the very first guest as chairman of the Barbados senior selection panel.

As fate would have it, his last appearance on Mid Wicket was just under a couple months ago on June 24th. Ironically, as soon as I introduced him on the programme, he expressed condolences to the family of Ronald “Duke Tank Lynch” Bradshaw, a former Primary and Secondary schoolmate of mine, who had recently passed and suddenly, too, like George. “Duke” was aged 56.

In his usual witty way, George told listeners that he and “Duke” had a couple things in common. Both were “sizeable” and “dark” in complexion. “Duke” was also a cricketer, an attacking batsman I dare say.

There have been and will be many tributes and stories in relation to Georgie. One of the most fitting has come from the BCA (check www.bcacricket.org) who I recall also played a major role in helping to organise a successful benefit for George in 2002.

Linton represented the Barbados and West Indies Under-19 teams as well as Yorkshire in the BCA Intermediate division championship before making his Division 1 debut for Spartan in the mid 1970s.

As I meticulously delved through my treasured BCA records, one of the first things which struck me was the pattern of George’s Division 1 statistics during the decade of the 1980s when there were 12 teams in the competition until 1989 when the number increased to 14 with the Combined Schools being split into North and South and Cable & Wireless (now LIME) being promoted from the Intermediate division.

In 1980 and 1981, he played full seasons, which amounted to 11 matches in each season, but for the next six seasons he was limited to only 24 matches all told because of professional contracts in Britain. In sequence, they were: 1982 (four), 1983 (five), 1984 (three), 1985 (four), 1986 (four) and 1987 (four) before playing 11 matches in 1988 and 13 in 1989.

What intrigued me about the 1980s and the decade of the 1990s as well was that gradually, perhaps suddenly, after being one of the top, genuine all-rounders, George then paid little attention to his batting, slipping further down the order but he never stopped being one of the top bowlers.

It would take more than one column to do full justice to George from a statistically perspective but I must highlight some of his outstanding feats in the BCA First division championship. For example, in 1980, he scored 459 runs including three half-centuries and took 54 wickets at 13.88 runs each, having sent down 301.3 overs including 73 maidens.

Linton was one of the BCA Cave Shepherd Five Cricketers of the Year in 1981 when he was the Spartan captain. He scored 556 runs from 17 innings, one not out, for an average of 34.75 and was one of only five batsmen to score 500 runs (including one century and four half-centuries) that season. His highest score was 104 against the BCL at Blenheim ‘A’ in the fourth series. He took 51 wickets (only one of two bowlers with over 50 scalps) at 14.82 runs each from 276.5 overs including 55 maidens with a best of six for 37 against Combined Schools at Lodge ‘A’, Society in the ninth series.

The following season, Linton also had the honour of scoring a century (106 not out) against Empire in the derby at Bank Hall in the eleventh round. In his four matches, he scored 161 runs (ave: 32.20) and took 31 wickets at the miserly average of 9.70.

Perhaps by sheer co-incidence, he had the identical bowling average of 9.70 in 1983 when he took 37 wickets in the five matches referred to earlier but it was from that season that his batting took a nosedive and to such an extent that he only passed 100 in season once thereafter – 103 in 1987 - before his First division career ended ten years later.

Apart from 1981, Linton was also the Spartan captain in 1988, 1989 and 1990 (for the first three matches). Spartan, with their base in Queen’s Park, won the Division 1 and Barbados Fire Cup (now Sagicor General Super Cup) titles in 1990.

Between 1980 and 1997, Linton took 606 First division wickets (including 361 between 1988 and 1994) – he missed only the 1995 season – at the outstanding average of 11.56. His best figures were nine for 65 in the first innings against St. Catherine at Bayfield in 1989 in the sixth series.

His most productive season with the ball was in 1994 when he grabbed 72 wickets (ave: 10.17) from 306 overs including 78 maidens.

More has to be written about George Linton. Trust me.

To his sorrowing relatives including brothers Louis and Desmond, sisters Judy and Cecelia – all of whom were from the combination of his late father Beresford and mother Eudora Linton, who lives in New York, along with two other siblings, Peter and Margaret Maynard (as they say from his father’s side), I extend deepest sympathy.

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Shakkae Marshall fell three runs short of joining an elite group of players to make a century in the final of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) LIME Under-15 competition but his sterling knock enabled Nicholls Baking Combermere to strengthen their grip on the title against Queen’s College.

Combermere ended the second and penultimate day at Kensington Oval today on 216 for eight in their second innings for a sizeable overall lead of 264 runs.

Barbados Under-15 batsman Marshall’s 97 came off 181 balls and he counted 12 fours in 223 minutes at the crease.

Resuming from an overnight five without loss, Combermere were in early strife at 30 for three. Medium-pacer Ajani Ince trapped David Scott lbw for the second time in the match as he played right across to a full length delivery.

Nightwatchman Jabarry Doughlin got one that cut back from left-arm pacer Ajani Batson and he was bowled pushing tentatively forward.

After striking two fours down the ground, Shian Brathwaite, who made 106 in the semi-final suffered a rare second failure. He got a full toss from medium-pacer Kayode Miller but the off-stump was uprooted as he tried to smash it too hard through mid-wicket.

Batson dropped an easy chance at extra-cover offered by Indal Persaud when he was on seven and the total 55, as he drove at Darian Trotman’s second delivery. The first hour belonged to Queen’s College as 51 runs were scored for three wickets from 14 overs.

However, Marshall was in good touch and got off the mark with a flick to the mid-wicket boundary off Batson. He then had a glance off the hip to fine-leg for four off Ince and next over played a lovely on-drive for four off Batson.

Persaud was the perfect foil for his skipper and Combermere went to lunch without further loss at 100 for three, with Marshall on 51 and Persaud 15.  Marshall reached his half-century with his eighth four when he banged his name -sake Mekhail through cove. By then he had batted 70 minutes and faced 61 balls.

The partnership was broken half an hour after lunch, when Persaud who was suffering with cramp and had to be treated twice, was lbw swinging across the fourth ball of a new spell from Ince.  He was in for 118 minutes and faced 94 deliveries for a very determined knock of 21.

Ince was again in the picture when Kofie Gilkes drove a catch to Miller at extra-cover.  Marshall lost momentum in the face of tight bowling and the second session realized 47 runs from 25 overs and more two wickets. At tea, Marshall was unbeaten on 77 and Zidan Clarke on nine.

Marshall and Clarke held firm for a sixth-wicket stand of 43 in 20.3 overs until they both were dismissed in consecutive overs with the second new-ball.

Clarke, driving loosely, was brilliantly caught by Nico Reifer diving full stretch to his left at second slip off Ince for a patient eleven, from 66 balls in 73 minutes.

Marshall got the first boundary off the new- ball, guiding Batson to third-man but he then produced a first-class yorker and Marshall was bowled leg-stump.

Kastun Stoute who survived a very confident appeal for lbw first ball from Ince, held up the bottom order with an unbeaten run-a-ball 38, including seven fours and one off the last ball of the day.  Ince has so far taken four for 33 and Batson three for 62.

The final day will start at 11 a.m. Queen’s College are in a must-win situation and will have a whole lot to do in order to prevent Combermere from taking a hat-trick of titles.

Roddy Estwick proud of his boys

Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Combermere are on top of the world as they have started something of a dynasty in the Barbados Cricket Association LIME Schools’ Under-15 Competition.

The Waterford lads came away with a massive 182-run win over Queen’s College to take their third straight title in the tournament.

Speaking to Head Coach of the team Roddy Estwick after Wednesday’s final, members of the media were told that Estwick did not look at it as a personal achievement, but as one for the boys and the school to enjoy for themselves. “I’m more happy for the players. It’s not about Roddy Estwick at all. It’s about the hard work that the players put in. I just prepare them. They are the ones that have to go out and execute the skills, and that is what they have done and wonderfully well. You gotta be happy for them because they continue to work hard and they continue to stay disciplined and that is all you can ask from young people,” he said.

With the match starting on Monday, Combermere took a first innings lead of close to 50 runs which saw them in a position of authority throughout the three-day final. Estwick explained that it was all part of the strategy. “We wanted to get first-innings lead and then control the game. Once we win the toss and we bat – we control the game. We can dictate what pace we want to play the game at. We set up yesterday (Tuesday) to play the whole day, which means that the opposition doesn’t really have a chance to win it again and then we can go in for the victory from there,” he said.

Noting that he had planned to retire from Combermere for several years, Estwick revealed that the intention was to serve Barbados’ cricket at a higher level. “I need a different challenge. I have made it quite public that I would love to help develop cricket in Barbados, not just at Combermere School, but right throughout Barbados. I have been around Barbados cricket now as a coach for the last ten years which is disappointing on my part.

Hopefully the BCA can see what I have been doing and include me in the fold because I think that I have got a lot to offer. I still think that am fit enough to do the job but if there is no job, I’ll have to stay at Combermere,” he said.

WICB Media Release.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The West Indies Cricket Board today announced that it is now accepting hand drawn designs for its recently announced kit design competition.

On August 1st last, the WICB announced that professional and amateur designers across the Caribbean are being given the historic opportunity to design the West Indies team One Day International and Twenty20 playing kit.

The WICB has agreed to accept hand drawn designs owing to overwhelming requests from interested amateur and professional designers.

“While we still prefer to receive electronic designs, we have received feedback and requests from numerous designers who have indicated that they are not able to produce electronic designs themselves due to a number of constraints and they are being asked to pay prohibitive sums to have these done for the purposes of submitting entries to the competition,” WICB Marketing and Communications Manager Imran Khan explained.

“We want to ensure the broadest possible participation so we are sympathetic to these requests and are happy to adjust the submission requirements to accommodate as many designers as possible,” Khan said.

Designers who are able to provide their designs in electronic format are encouraged to do so. Designers who are not able to produce electronic designs can have their hand drawn designs scanned and submitted via email as a PDF document.

The competition is open to all designers of all ages who are citizens of or resident in any WICB jurisdiction. The deadline for submission is August 29 and full details on how to enter and the terms and conditions for the competition are available at www.windiescricket.com/kitdesign

The deadline for submission is August 29th.

The winner in each of the three categories will receive HP tablets and desktop computers along with all expenses paid trips to a West Indies international match in the Caribbean among other prizes.

The WICB is seeking three designs:

1.    West Indies Men’s Twenty20 Team

2.    West Indies Men’s One Day International Team

3.    West Indies Women’s Team

Designers can submit in any one of the categories or all if they are so desirous.

The WICB will appoint a diverse judging panel to select the winning designs. The panel will include players and prominent personalities in the Caribbean fashion and entertainment industries. The judging panel will be revealed at a later date.

Cricinfo article.

Sydney, Australia - West Indies batsman Dwayne Smith has signed a two-year deal with Sydney Sixers for the upcoming Big Bash League in December.

"I'm going to come and give it my best and hopefully we can see plenty of sixes when it is my turn to play for the Sixers," Smith said.

Smith will head into the tournament in sublime form in Twenty20 matches, having played several match-winning innings for two of his teams in recent months.

Smith was the second highest run-scorer in the 2014 Indian Premier League, scoring 566 runs for Chennai Super Kings with five half-centuries.

He carried that form over to Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League, making 353 runs with two hundreds and a fifty at an average of 44.12. Smith also top-scored with an unbeaten 59 in the rain-affected final against Guyana Amazon Warriors, as Tridents clinched the title with an eight-run victory according to the D/L method.

"Dwayne is a powerful exciting stroke-maker at the top of the order," Trevor Bayliss, the Sixers coach, said. "He also bowls some handy medium pace and his fielding is top class."
