Cricinfo article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Former West Indies opening batsman Gordon Greenidge on batting at the top, playing India's spin quartet, and that Lord's chase in 1984.

Subash Jayaraman: What is essential for an opening batsman, in Test matches, especially?

Gordon Greenidge: You have to have a serious portion of self-confidence to get the job done. You have to be technically able to withstand the pressure and know when to apply pressure. It is not a position a lot of people would put their hands up and say "Yes, I will do it." You need to set the tone for the day and a platform for the team to build on.

SJ: The odds of failure are much higher when you are opening the batting and the ball is swinging all over the place. How does one gain that confidence?

GG: It is not that you get thrust into that position. It takes a special type of person to want to do that job. You know, you have to be very focused technically, well groomed, and be able to absorb a lot of tension and pressure that goes into the job.

SJ: I am assuming you can put pressure on the opposition in two ways - by attacking the bowlers and scoring a lot of runs, and where you defend all day and not give them your wicket?

GG: I don't think defence is more "all day", but some days or games where you have to bat very hard because you need to keep the opposition out there and develop a score, because the pitch and the conditions may not be suitable to the way you want to play. It means you have to curb your normal way of play and be very stubborn and focused to get the job done. That technical side of you is what is going to carry you through.

SJ: We have seen batsmen of all kinds open the batting. Some very aggressive, some very defensive. How do you define that balance?

GG: I like to feel I am going to take the fight to the bowlers. I believe when I take the fight to you, I make you change your game plan. It didn't always work, of course, but I thought this was the best game plan for me.

SJ: When would you say a batsman is ready to open in Tests, in terms of age, experience, the amount of first-class runs?

GG: A lot of individuals choose where they prefer to play. That is not the case with Nos. 1, 2 and 3, because those are the positions for people who are groomed, who groom themselves. Persons at Nos. 4, 5, 6 or 7 could alternate, because they are very similar positions. I only batted down the order a couple of times when playing international cricket. I am not certain I would be suited to go in any lower than 1 or 2, because to have sat there waiting to go in would not have worked out for me.

SJ: Was there a point in time where you thought, "I am made to be an opening batsman"?

GG: Not made to be. I wanted to do it. I couldn't honestly feel I could have been anything other than an opening batsman, regardless of whether someone thought my technique to be good or not as good as it should be. I tried to make that position my own. If anyone wanted to come into the team, it had to be a case where someone was seriously ill, or had an injury, because there is no way I would give my position to someone else.

SJ: What was the role of county cricket in sharpening your role as an opening batsman?

GG: I suppose what helped is the regular games you had to play on varying types of wickets. There were seasons of county cricket on uncovered pitches; they started the season with pitches which were very green, and some of them played very true; some played low, some seamed a lot. So from season to season, you had to make some adjustments to the game. That helped make my game more compact.

SJ: What was the role of beach cricket in your youth?

GG: One of the favourite things of beach cricket is that some guys stood more on the back foot, because the bowler was waiting for the water to come on to the hard part of the sand and the ball just skidded. They would bowl very short and the batsmen just sat back on the back foot and pulled or cut. I wasn't a great puller or cutter. I was more of a front-foot player. I did play a lot of beach cricket, it was fun. Beach cricket, or cricket at the school in the evening, used to last for weeks. Guys used to bat for weeks. If you couldn't get them out, the next day you can't get the bat back.

You had to learn to bowl your heart out. It is only the person who bowls who gets a chance to bat. If you are fielding for the whole while, you are not going to bat.

SJ: How did you switch on and off between deliveries in Test matches?

GG: You focus on various things around you, like the pitch. You gather your thoughts. The hardest one is after each session, because after you have sat for a while you have to come back and say, "This is the beginning of the innings." You cannot and shouldn't be saying, "I am continuing from where I left off." Yes, runs are on the board, but the whole cycle has to start - your feelings, your footwork, the coordination, the timing on the ball.

SJ: Opening batsmen generally tend to be really good at facing pacers and seamers and not so good perhaps against spinners. In your time you had to face some of the best spinners in the game, especially against India. What did you do to prepare against them?

GG: Technique comes in to play again. You have to develop that skill. I am happy to have gotten the opportunity to play against the great spinners in that time. India had four excellent spinners, and that was my first tour. There is a sense of fear when you play these spinners, because you know the calibre of the players you are facing. But you have to play what is happening on that day. You can't go that far back anymore because then you are just playing the experience and the calibre of the person in the past. Today may be the day that the person is not spinning so much, his length is not good.

I was a big reader of spin. I did use my feet when I thought it was necessary, and was very watchful of the ball. I read more off the pitch than in the air. I was able to cope with it reasonably well. In that first tour, it did me a lot of good to deal with the four great spinners that India had. I was able to survive and score runs.

SJ: Were there subtle changes in your technique, depending on whether you are playing in England or Australia or India, in terms of movement in the crease and the grip on the bat?

GG: Not too much movement in the crease, as you have to stay still. Your head needs to stay still when you are watching the ball to get a better view of what is happening. To move around the crease, you may bat leg stump, sometimes middle and leg, sometimes middle stump, or your head goes a little further to the off stump than where you are looking at. I don't want to play too many balls out of my line of head, especially if the ball is shaping away. Even so, you need to be watchful, because some balls go straight and some will come back. I am certain that bowlers delivered deliveries to shape away from the batters, but it may hit the wrong side of the seam and cut back at you. You have to watch very carefully.

SJ: As a front-foot batsman, what were the shots you liked to play and shots you avoided?

GG: It depends on the delivery you receive. Don't premeditate. When you have seen the delivery, your experience and practice will tell you this is the shot you are playing to it.

SJ: Did you ever compare yourself to other opening batsmen of your time, like Sunil Gavaskar?

GG: I don't make comparisons. You look at those players and appreciate how they got their job done. Some looked very subdued, very quiet in their approach, and some were explosive. You develop your skills the best way you can and deal with it. A lot of people didn't want to be [Geoffrey] Boycott. I thought he was technically excellent. Boycott could play a lot of attacking shots when he got in the mood. England would be very happy he was in that position, because otherwise they would have been bowled out for a much lower score.

SJ: Could you talk a bit about your partnership with Desmond Haynes?

GG: We didn't see a lot of each other outside of cricket, although we didn't live far apart. But the team, the dressing room, the camaraderie, the relationship, the partnership was good. A great understanding had developed over a number of years. There were times where we felt we didn't call enough. We looked up and mostly knew it was a yes and we could have run it. It is not something that you want to practise or have the youngsters practise. It was just an understanding that had developed over a number of years. He would sometimes be the aggressor, or I would. We always had a battle on. He wanted to face the first ball, and I would say, "No, you haven't matured yet." I wouldn't just let him.

SJ: There might have been spells or times when one of you says "You are not in the zone", so you let the other batsman take the strike as much as possible.

GG: That has happened on quite a few occasions. We were able to rotate to make sure the person who was playing better on the day received more of the bowlers who were more troublesome in that particular case.

SJ: You had Viv Richards, Clive Lloyd and Larry Gomes coming after you. Did that free your mind to go out and play?

GG: It was a case where you played the game the way you want to play. That was the freedom given to the players. Don't be inhibited in any way. This made you happy and comfortable. I think in that 16-year period we didn't play more than 25 or 30 players at the most. That is perhaps not heard of.

SJ: Could you elaborate on that Lord's innings and whatever else sticks in your mind as being your very best?

GG: The Lord's Test in 1984 wasn't a planned situation. The score of 340 runs in two sessions and maybe an hour - it is not a score that you will say: "We will measure it." There is no way that you could have done that. You could have liked to start off with a flurry of runs and developed the score before the first break. You hope you can reach that so you can give a more forceful challenge in the next two sessions. It wasn't like we sat down in the dressing room saying, "We will do this." I cannot recall exactly how it happened. I saw what was coming, played a shot to the delivery. I got dropped in the latter part of the innings. You play the game the way you saw it.

On my part, there was an innings in 1976 at Old Trafford that was more planned. We ended up getting bowled out for just over 200 runs. I batted right through the innings. That innings was more set in my subconscious than anything else, because of what happened in that particular match. It wasn't a pitch where you should be bowled out. The bowler wasn't a demon bowler, he was a seam bowler. We weren't pressured in any way. That was one of those days where you could not have foreseen what happened. We lost so many wickets in such a short time for so few runs. It meant that the battle was twice as hard.

SJ: In the Lord's Test, it wasn't some random bowlers. You had Bob Willis, Ian Botham, Neil Foster and Derek Pringle coming at you. And it was a day-five pitch. Once you got in and got a flurry of runs and got to the first break, what was your thinking process when you came back out?

GG: We were only about 40-odd runs in the first session. We still needed 300 runs. We just wanted to bat out the next two sessions and not create a crisis out there. It could have easily happened that we could have chased down the next 290 or 300 runs in two sessions. But come on, it may occur now, because teams are scoring 400 in a day, but back then if you scored 300 in a day in the first innings, you did exceptionally well. It was either a case where you had runs, maybe seven wickets, or you got bowled out. If you are looking at 280, you did very well in the day.

Yes, you knew the calibre of the bowlers. But like I said, you don't play the man, you play what you see, regardless of the reputation. You know what you can do. But you play what you see. If you play the calibre of the bowler, then you are probably 30% to 40% beaten already.

SJ: Haynes gets out when the score is 57. Larry Gomes comes in. There is a phenomenal partnership. You go for the next session break and come back out. Now it is a definite possibility that you can take it down. What was said in the dressing room?

GG: Once we got to the last hour, we probably had less than 80 runs or 100 runs to get. We still had nine wickets and we thought: we'll give it a thrash. We had to continue playing how we were playing - start all over again, playing what you see in front of you at the time. We got a chance to increase the tempo and we did that. You don't plan it. I can't think anyone is going to plan 340 runs in five hours, regardless of who you are playing against.

Larry is a very pragmatic player. He was quite explosive in that innings as well. A lot of you don't look at the way Larry played, the role he played. The sort of mentions that I get for what I did... Larry played an exceptional innings too. When we discussed the matter about him getting his hundred, it wasn't a matter to him at all. He said, "Let's get the game over with." That was brilliant. History was to be created that day, and we had done so.

Roseau, Dominica - The Regional Women's Super50 bowled off across Dominica yesterday with matches in both Group A and Group B taking place in four venues on the island.

The highlight of the day was the low scores in all of the matches that got the tournament going. Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago registered victories in Group A, while St Vincent and the Grenadines and Guyana won in Group B.

GROUP A - BARBADOS v DOMINICA AT WINDSOR PARK: After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Barbados demolished hosts, Dominica, in less than half-day, skittling out their opponents for just 52 in 20.3 overs. There were five ducks in the Dominican innings which saw just one batter getting into double figures.

Tiffany Graham top scored with 12 while Talima Ismael had the second highest score of seven. Leading the destruction for the Bajans was Shamilia Connell, who spear-headed the attack. The pacer finished with figures of 6-31 from her 10 overs.

In return, Barbados romped to their target in 7.4 overs with opener, Hayley Matthews, hitting an aggressive 36 from 28 balls. Her knock included four boundaries. Barbados lost just two wickets along the way, getting to 54/2 to complete an eight-wicket win.

GROUP A T&T v GRENADA AT GENEVA PLAYING FIELD: A five-wicket haul from Stephanie Ramcharan blew away Grenada as Trinidad and Tobago kicked off their 2014 Regional Women's Super50 with a six-wicket victory over Grenada.

After opting to bowl first, Anisa Mohammed's side skittled out Grenada in less than 20 overs for just 36 runs. No batter on the Grenadian team got into double figures. Ramcharan finished with 5-20, only being able to complete seven overs. Gaitri Seetahal also chipped in with three wickets for one run.

The Trinis stumbled in their chase of such a small total, losing opener Britney Cooper without a run on the board. Stacy Ann King would prop up the Trinis though, stabilising the chase even as wickets fell around her. She would finish unbeaten on 13 as T&T got to 38/4 from 11.5 overs.

Grenada Innings: 36 All Out (19.2 Overs). Carena Noel 8, Anish Thomas 6, Aly Fletcher 6, Rachel Cyrus 5; Stephanie Ramcharan 7-0-20-5, Gaitri Seetahal 2.2-1-1-3, Kerbyina Alexander 5-1-13-0, Anisa Mohammed 5-4-1-0.

GROUP B GUYANA v JAMAICA AT BENJAMIN PARK: Guyana made up for a poor batting performance with the ball by defending a low total against defending Regional Women's Super50 champions Jamaica to kick off their Group B campaign with a win.

After being asked to bat first in a rain-affected match which was reduced to 26 overs-a-side, Guyana made 90/5 in their allotted overs. Katana Mentore tried to resist for the Guyanese with a patient knock of 30 from 69 balls, but once she went, Guyana couldn't kick on. Nelanie Henry also struck a patient 18 from 42 balls.

Jamaica in response lost wickets consistently in their run chase. At one point, they were three wickets down for six runs. However, Chedian Nation gave the Jamaicans hope with a fighting 30. Captain Stafanie Taylor also resisted for a short while, scoring 20.

However, Guyana kept taking wickets at crucial moments and pulled off a narrow three-run victory with over two overs to go in the match.

Guyana Innings: 90/5 (26 Overs). Katana Mentore 30, Nelanie Henry 18, Treymane Smartt 16*, Shemaine Campbell 8; Alecia Bookal 5-1-12-1, Chedian Nation 5-1-16-1, Roshana Outar 5-0-19-1, Stafanie Taylor 4-0-27-1.

Jamaica Innings: 87 All Out (23.3 Overs). Chedian Nation 30*, Stafanie Taylor 20, Vanessa Watts 8, Tameka Sanford 5; Erva Giddings 5-0-15-2, Phaffiana Millington 5-0-19-2, Treymane Smartt 5-0-11-1, Shemaine Campbell 0.3-0-2-1.

GROUP B ST LUCIA v ST VINCENT & THE GRENADINES AT BOTANICAL GARDENS: St Vincent and the Grenadines saw off St Lucia by six wickets to start their Regional Women's Super50 campaign on a positive note.

Captain Julian Nero seemed to make the right decision when she won the toss and elected to field first. SVG sent St Lucia crashing all out for just 58 runs in 22 overs. Stacy Adams finished with 4-18, while Latoya Providence took 3-18. Roylin Cooper (17) and Gemma Bridgette (12) top scored for the St Lucians.

SVG stumbled in their early parts of their run chase, being reduced to 17/2 after seven overs. However, Samantha Lynch held the innings together. The opening bat scored 35 from 41 deliveries. She was the highlight of the run chase.

Nicole St. Prix grabbed 2-16 while Yasmine St. Ange and Teaddie Crawford had a wicket each but ultimately St Lucia did not have enough runs on the board. SVG got to 59/4 in 18.3 overs, winning by 6 wickets.

St Lucia Innings: 58 All Out (22 Overs). Roylin Cooper 17, Gemma Bridgette 12, Merlika Edward 7, Nicole St. Prix 5*; Stacey Adams 6-1-18-4, Latoya Providence 6-2-18-3, Vinisha King 5-1-12-2, Ronelia Fergus 5-1-9-0.

Roseau, Dominica - There were crushing wins for Guyana and Dominica in Round 2 of the Group Stage in the Regional Women's Super50 Tournament today across four venues on the island of Dominica.

Guyana easily saw off St Vincent and the Grenadines while Dominica brushed aside Grenada. Jamaica had to come from behind to see off St Lucia while rain frustrated both T&T and Barbados at Grandbay.

GROUP B GUYANA v ST VINCENT & THE GRENADINES AT WINDSOR PARK: Half-centuries from West Indies Women's cricketers, Tremayne Smartt and Shemaine Campbell helped Guyana defeat St Vincent & the Grenadines by 158 runs.

Though Guyana were struggling at 51/4 after 16.1 overs, both Smartt and Campbell met in a 104-run partnership that swung the match Guyana's way. Campbell hit 56 runs from 72 balls while Smartt struck 59 runs from 60 balls. Campbell's knock included four boundaries and two sixes while Smartt struck seven fours and a six.

The Vincentians lost captain and West Indies Women's cricketer, Juliana Nero for just three runs when Smartt her Leg Before. Things only got worst from there as St Vincent and the Grenadines were skittled out for just 34 runs in 19.1 overs. Erva Giddings finished with 6-16.

GROUP A DOMINICA v GRENADA AT BOTANICAL GARDENS: Grenada limped to a crucial win over Dominica but the batting troubles of both teams continued today.

After being put in to bat first, Dominica collapsed to just 39 all out in 21.5 overs. No batter went into double figures with Kimara Sabaroche top scoring for Dominica with six runs while opener Annica Andrew scored four.

Afy Fletcher led the destruction for the Grenadians, taking 6-8 from just under five overs. In the chase, Krisani Irish made things difficult for the visitors, taking 4-19 early on to start a panic in the Grenadian batting line-up.

However, Afy Fletcher stood up with the bat as well, scoring 25 runs from 23 balls before being run out. The crucial knock took the visitors within touching distance of victory and they were able to wrap up a five-wicket win eventually.

Dominica Innings: 39 All Out (21.5 Overs). Kimara Sabaroche 6, Annica Andrew 4, Rosilia Registe 3, Talima Ismael 2; Afy Fletcher 4.5-0-8-6, Akeira Peters 5-1-8-2, Rackel Williams 4-1-7-2, Lena Peters 3-1-5-0.

GROUP A TRINIDAD & TOBAGO v BARBADOS AT GENEVA PLAYING FIELD: Rain disappointed and forced an abandonment of Group As top of the table clash with Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados.

Both teams would have been eyeing to pull away from the other but all they were greeted with was a wet outfield at Geneva Playing Field. There wasn't rain on Saturday, however, persistent rainfall a day before left the outfield soggy and damp.

Though the sun was present for most of the day in Dominica, it could not dry up the damp spots at the Geneva Playing Field. A delayed start saw the umpires postponing an inspection until 1pm Eastern Caribbean Time, then thereafter postponing it again. Eventually, the match was abandoned.

Lugg stars, Jamaica, Bim, Windwards win

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Their batting – led by Leroy Lugg – set things up and disciplined bowling ushered holders Jamaica to a 69-run victory over Trinidad & Tobago in the Regional Under-19 One-day competition on Saturday.

Lugg, the West Indies Under-19 opener, hit the top score of 68 and Smith supported with boundary-studded 44, as Jamaica were bowled out for 211 in 47.5 overs after they were sent in to bat in their fourth round match at the Demerara Cricket Club.

Smith followed up his cameo with another destructive spell of 3-29 from 8.1 overs and his captain and off-spinner Ramaal Lewis, the incumbent West Indies Under-19s captain, collected a stingy 2-8 from eight overs, as T&T were bowled out for 142 in 46.1 overs.

The victory was the third for Jamaica in four matches in the competition, following wins over Barbados and ICC Americas, with the other match abandoned without a ball bowled due to wet conditions caused by rain.

The Jamaicans moved provisionally into the lead on 21.3 points, 3.2 ahead of hosts Guyana – inactive on Saturday having drawn a bye and now have a match in hand.

Half-centuries from openers Nicholas Kirton and Leniko Boucher propelled Barbados to their second victory in the competition, when they beat Leeward Islands by eight wickets, and Windward Islands collected their first win following a notable all-round performance from Gidron Pope that led them to a four-wicket victory over ICC Americas.

The competition continues on Sunday, when the Jamaicans face the Guyanese in a top-of-the-table clash at Bourda Oval, Barbados meet ICC Americas at the Demerara Cricket Club, and Windwards play T&T at Enmore.

At DCC: Smith and Lewis worked their way through the bottom half of the T&T batting, after a 69-run, third-wicket stand between left-handed opener Amir Jangoo and the enterprising Camillo Carimbocas had the two-island republic’s side sitting pretty on 82 for two.

Carimbocas was run out for 32 and Jangoo fell for the same score in successive overs, leaving T&T 87 for four, and the Jamaicans never allowed them to script a comeback story.

No other batsman passed 20, as T&T lost their last six wickets for 41 in the space of 91 balls.

Lugg struck one four and six sixes from 81 balls and had propped up the top-half of the Jamaica batting before he became one of 4-32 in 10 overs for off-spinner Tevin Jadoo when he was caught at long-off in the 29th over.

Jamaica stumbled to 153 for seven and looked in danger of falling for below 200 before an entertaining rearguard from Smith that included three fours and four sixes from 23 balls before he was caught at deep cover off fast-medium bowler Anderson Phillip in the 47th over.

At Everest: Kirton gathered seven boundaries in the top score of 63 from 122 balls and Boucher smote four fours and one six in an unbeaten 58 from 120 balls, as Barbados had one of their best batting performances on the trip and successfully chased 152 for victory against the Leewards.

Kirton shared 130 for the first wicket with Boucher before he fell in the 38th over and the dreadlocksed Akil Greenidge, son of former Barbados and West Indies batsman Alvin Greenidge, went for a duck in the following over without addition to the total, leaving the Barbadians to get 22 from 71 balls.

Boucher kept his head and his captain Joshua Drakes has shown great temperament throughout the tournament and they guided Barbados over the finish line.

The Barbadian spinners had tied the Leewards batsmen down, after an opening stand of 43 between Ross Powell and Shaquille Martina.

Off-spinner Neil Persaud had the flattering figures of 3-11 from his allotted 10 overs and left-arm spinner Chad Williams grabbed 2-24 from his 10 overs.

Jaeel Clarke led the way for the Leewards with 31 not out after they were sent in to bat, his captain Jeremiah Louis made 26 and Martina got 21, but no other batsman reached 20.

At Wales: Pope hammered three fours and six sixes in the top score of 55 from 33 balls and Kershaskie Jno Lewis was not out on 30, as the Windwards successfully chased 131 for victory against ICC Americas.

Pope dominated a second wicket stand of 72 with Sherman Hooper before he was bowled essaying a sweep at a delivery from Farhan Malik in the 11th over.

Spinners Nikhil Dutta and Delray Rawlings then grabbed two wickets apiece to put the shivers down the spines of the Windwards, but Jno Lewis propped up the rest of the batting and saw them to the promised land.

Pope was the pick of the Windwards bowlers with 3-25 from 10 overs, fast bowler Ryan John took 3-24 from 4.4 overs and Deron Hypolite bagged 2-16 from six overs, as ICC Americas were bowled out 130 in 36.4 overs after being sent in to bat.

Corbin cracks double-century for UWI, Empire lead LIME in BCA Elite division, Series 5, Day 1

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Kyle Corbin cracked his first ever double-century and there were also hundreds for his Sagicor Life UWI team-mate Kavem Hodge and the experienced Kenroy Williams of Brathwaite Construction/Republic Bank St. Catherine on the first day of Series 5 matches in the BCA Elite division championship.

The 24-year-old Corbin scored 203 and Hodge made an unbeaten 108 as UWI amassed the day's highest total of 393 for five declared off 63 overs in their first innings after winning the toss against ESA Field Pickwick at the 3Ws Oval.

Corbin and Hodge added 248 in 35.1 overs for the second wicket after left-hander Anthony Alleyne was dismissed for 22 in a stand of 70 with Corbin.

Corbin, a former UWI captain, who made his debut seven years ago for Guardian General Barbados Youth, reached only his second century at this level in 124 minutes off 86 balls with nine fours and five sixes.

All told, he was at the crease for 227 minutes, having faced 159 balls while counting 17 fours and ten sixes.

Hodge, a 21-year-old Dominican, batted for 207 minutes, received 145 deliveries and counted six fours and one six.

Fast bowler Damien Farley took three for 57 off ten overs including the scalp of Corbin, who was leg before wicket.

Pickwick were one without loss at the close.

At Dayrells Road:

Kenroy Williams gave himself a fitting 30th birthday present by recording his second consecutive century of the championship and ninth all told in a first innings total of 305 for seven off 74 overs off CounterPoint Wanderers who lost the toss.

Williams brought up his hundred in 220 minutes off 148 balls with nine fours and one six and added another six in a knock which has so far lasted for 229 minutes.

It followed an unbeaten 124 against Guardian General Barbados Youth at Bayfield.

Skipper Shamar Cooke made 68 and Derick Bishop a brisk 41.

Williams and Cooke put on 121 for the fourth wicket.

Seamer Mali Marshall, the son of the late, great Barbados and West Indies fast bowler, took three for 46 off 14 overs and Renaldo Arthur, better known as a wicket-keeper/batsman but whose off-spin has been proving to be more than handy of late, picked up two for 45.

At Bank Hall:

Despite being without the nucleus of their team due to a tour of England which starts mid-week as part of the club's 100th anniversary, runaway leaders ICBL Empire were the only side to take first innings points and also make significant progress in a quest for a fourth win in as many matches.

Lowly-placed LIME were undermined by a combination of pace and spin and crashed to 62 all out in only 26.2 overs - the lowest total by any team for the season - after they were sent in.

Randy Thomas, the LIME captain and veteran player, was the only batsman to reach double-figures with 30 at No. 4 before he was seventh out with the score 56, one of four wickets for left-arm spinner Kemal Sealy.

Sealy took four for 10 off 7.2 overs, medium-pacer Vitaly Wilkinson, three for 19 off seven overs and seasoned fast bowler Tennyson Roach, two for 18 off six overs.

Empire then recovered from 34 for four to close on 179 for nine off 46 overs to secure nine out of at least 18 points they would earn with an outright win.

Shawn Graham, the 36-year-old former Barbados batsman who has been playing at this level since 1992, first led the recovery with heavy-set opener Kodi Phillips by putting on 65 in 15.5 overs for the fifth wicket.

After Phillips was dismissed for 52 off 65 balls, Empire soon slipped to 110 for eight before Graham and Roach, who bats left-handed, added 41 in 8.2 overs for the ninth wicket.

Graham was unbeaten on 59 in 150 minutes off 104 balls, no doubt hoping that Empire could squeeze out a third batting point if they reach 225 by the 75th over.

Off-spinner Jason Hinds picked up four for 57 off 18 overs.

At Trents:

Massy Stores Spartan kept title holders CGI Maple in the field for the entire day, scoring 222 all out in 69.3 overs after Maple opted to field.

Left-hander Jameel Stuart topscored with 58 in 129 minutes off 95 balls with eight threes and five fours, while Andre Gill contributed 40 and captain Akeem Springer, 34.

Stuart and Gill added 98 for the fifth wicket.

Off-spinner Ramon Greaves took three for 63 off 22 overs.

At Lester Vaughan, Cane Garden:

Guardian General Barbados Youth were bowled out for 190 in 73.1 overs after they lost the toss against BDFSP, who went to stumps on 29 without loss.

Dario Belle made 57 in 225 minutes off 195 balls with seven boundaries, while Kyle Hinkson was more enterprising, scoring 53 in 96 minutes off 70 balls including seven fours and one six. Dominica Drakes made 35 not out.

Pacer Tevyn Lowe took four for 48 off 14 overs.

Corbin scored 203 in a first innings total of 393 for five declared off 63 overs. He batted for 227 minutes, faced 159 balls and struck 17 fours and 10 sixes.
