Sebastien, James give Windwards lead

Gros Islet, St Lucia - The Windward Islands led a spirited fightback on Day 2 of their opening round Regional 4-Day match against Barbados at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.

Only two sessions were possible on Day 1 after rain ended play prematurely. Kraigg Brathwaite and Carlos Brathwaite were in the middle of leading a Barbados resurgence at Tea. The Bajans resumed their first innings on 152/5 with the skipper on 53 not out and his namesake on 37.

Barbados went on to score 213 and were bowled out just before Dinner on the second afternoon. Kraigg Brathwaite was the last man out for 82. Windwards pacer, Nelon Pascal, picked up his fifth 5-wicket haul in First Class cricket, finishing with 5-61. Alston Bobb and Kenroy Peters both took two wickets each.

The Windwards saw out a short, tricky, period to go to Dinner on 9/0 but after the resumption, pacer, Miguel Cummins fired for Barbados snaring two wickets in two balls to leave Windwards reeling at 28/2.

Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher sought to rebuild the innings as both came together in a crucial 42-run stand before Fletcher was caught behind off Tino Best, giving the Bajan pacer his 200th First Class wicket.

Charles quickly followed Fletcher as Kevin Stoute struck for the visitors to leave Windwards 70/4. But captain Liam Sebastien and Keddy Lesporis met and put on a solid stand to prevent any further damage.

By Tea, both batsmen had added 73 runs and taken the score to 143/4. Though Lesporis went soon after Tea, Sebastien soldiered on. He got to his 50 and met a willing partner in Lindon James.

Together, Sebastien and James took the home side to a lead, surpassing Barbados' first innings score.

Both were going strongly until Jonathan Carter was brought into the attack. The medium pacer almost immediately removed Sebastien for 62, then sent Alston Bobb back to the pavilion without scoring.

But James continued to bat solidly. He brought up his 50 from 91 balls, hitting four fours and a six. Wickets fell around him though. Cummins struck twice in the 64th over removing both Peters and Delorn Johnson.

The Windwards declared their innings on 252/9, with James on 62 not out. It gave the hosts a 39 run lead. Their hope of picking up a late wicket were dashed though as Kraigg Brathwaite and Rashidi Boucher too Barbados to stumps in their second innings on 11/0.

Day 3 starts at 2:30pm Eastern Caribbean Time tomorrow as the match continues to make up for lost time on Day 1.

GROS ISLET, St Lucia, CMC - Disciplined bowling led by a five-wicket haul by left-arm experienced Vincentian seamer Kenroy Peters helped the Windward Islands to a nine-wicket victory over Barbados in the opening round of the Regional Four-Day Cricket Tournament at the Beausejour Cricket Ground on Sunday.

Barbados started the day, in what was the third of the day/night fixture, on 11 without loss after being led by 39 runs by the Windwards. They went to the close Saturday night facing just one over of the second innings.

The Windwards had just declared their first innings on 252 for nine having dismissed the Barbadians for 213 in their first innings.

Captain Kraigg Brathwaite, who topscored with 82 in his team's first innings, was their leading scorer for the second straight innings. This time his contribution was a mere15 and was the second wicket to fall and the first for Peters who finished with five for 16 off 12 overs.

Only two other Barbadian batsmen got to double figures, opener Rashidi Boucher with 14 and number three Roston Chase who also struck 14 before Peters and Nelon Pascal ploughed through the Barbadian batting order resulting in their last eight wickets tumbling for 38 runs.

Pascal finished with three for 42 and Delorn Johnson, with the wickets of Chase and Jonathan Carter, finished with two for 28. The Windwards’ bowlers were disciplined in their line and lengths but several of the Barbadian batsmen succumbed to poor shot selection.

Needing 52 for victory, the Windwards raced to their target in just 11 overs. Johnson Charles, who partnered Devon Smith in opening the innings, was particularly severe on all bowlers plundering 33 in 49 minutes off 37 balls with seven fours.

Smith was the only victim to the Barbadians, leg before wicket to Miguel Cummins for two.

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Leeward Islands broke a sequence of three matches without a win over against Combined Campuses & Colleges in the Regional 4-Day Tournament with a 72-run, come-from-behind victory on Tuesday.

Spin bowling all-rounder Hayden Walsh Jr, an attendee of the Sagicor West Indies High Performance Centre in the last year, grabbed 4-81 from 15 overs to trigger a CCC batting collapse, as they chased 262 for victory on the final day of their first round match at Warner Park in St. Kitts.

Gavin Tonge supported with 3-44 from 13 overs to flatten the top-order and leg-spinner Anthony Martin completed the demolition with a miserly 2-17 from 19 overs, as the Leewards ensured a full house of victories in the opening week of the Tournament.

The highlight of the match was the first hundred of the new term from Leewards wicketkeeper/batsman Jahmar Hamilton.

A graduate of the Sagicor WIHPC, he collected his second first-class hundred of 119 in the second innings to bring the home team back into the match and give them the inspiration to fight for a victory that has become quite rare.

It was the Leewards’ first victory over the CCC since they crushed them by 10 wickets four years ago at the Beausejour Cricket Ground in St. Lucia.

Jamaica continued their dominance of Guyana, when they started the Tournament with a resounding seven-wicket victory on home soil at Sabina Park.

The Jamaicans defied a seven-wicket, match performance from West Indies left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul to coast to victory before tea on the final day on Monday.

It was the home team’s seventh straight victory over the visitors and 12th in 21 matches since 2000 – a period during which the Guyanese have only been able to snare one victory eight years ago at Chedwin Park in the Jamaican district of Innswood.

Windward Islands were the first to the finish line, when they completed a confident nine-wicket victory inside three days over reigning champions Barbados on Sunday under the lights at Beausejour.

It was their third win in their last seven matches against the Barbadians and was set up by impressive fast bowling from Nelon Pascal and long-standing left-arm medium-fast bowler Kenroy Peters.

Pascal ended with match figures of 8-103 and Peters grabbed 7-45 in a contest ending before tea on the third day with Kraigg Brathwaite’s side demolished for 90 in their second innings – the third time in the last four matches between the two sides that Barbados had been dismissed for a total of less than 100.

Drakes slams 75 as Combermere beat Lodge by 10 runs in first quarter-final of Garner T20

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Set up by a splendid knock of 75 from West Indies Under-19 team batsman Jonathan Drakes, Combermere Old Scholars defeated Lodge Old Scholars by ten runs in the first quarter-final of the sixth annual Foundation School Joel Garner Twenty20 tapeball competition at Briar Hall on Monday night.

Drakes, who returned home at the weekend from the ICC Under-19 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, proved a most fitting replacement for appointed captain Jomel Warrican, who won the Baron's Smokehouse Player-of-the-Match in all three of his team's preliminary matches but is now involved with the regional first-class championship for Combined Campuses & Colleges.

Playing in his first match, Drakes impressed all and sundry with a wide array of strokes following the dismissal of stand-in captain Shayne Moseley without a run scored in only the second ball of the match after Combermere had won the toss.

Drakes and Kamal Sealy, who made 29, aded 60 in 7.1 overs for the second wicket to set the stage for a total of 158 for eight off 20 overs.

The 19-year-old Drakes, who went to the crease at No. 3, reached his half-century off 42 balls with three sixes and two fours and all told faced 56 deliveries, smashing six sixes and two fours before he was eighth out with the score 154 in the final out. He duly won the Baron's Smokehouse $100 Player-of-the-Match prize.

Drakes also kept wicket in place of Chaim Holder, who was forced to retire hurt while batting following a collision with the Lodge captain Diego Stuart just after completing a single. A visit to the doctor and x-rays revealed that Holder, a former Barbados Under-19 team-mate of Drakes, sustained a fractured left collar bone.

Former Barbados fast bowler Corey Edwards was the leading wicket-taker for Lodge with four for 17 off three overs after surprisingly coming on as late as the sixth and last bowler, while pacer Stuart picked up two for 38 off four overs.

Lodge reached 64 for three at the halfway stage and then tried desperately to lift the mounting asking rate before they were restricted to 148 for six.

Stuart topscored with an unbeaten 49 at No. 6, hitting four fours and one six, while Renaldo Holder made 28 before he was run out.

Medium-pacer Devon Goodman took two for 29 off four overs.

This is the fourth year that both teams are taking part in the popular tournament and it was the second time Combermere had beaten Lodge at the same stage, having triumphed by 61 runs at Dover in 2012 before losing in the semi-finals to St. Leonard's Old Scholars.

Neither Combermere nor Lodge have ever reached the final.

The second quarter-final brings together title holders Foundation 'A' Old Scholars and the 2012 champions Deighton Griffith Old Scholars, again at Briar Hall, on Thursday, March 6, at 7 p.m.

The remaining quarter-finals are slated for Friday, March 7, at Dover. RG Plumbing Coleridge & Parry Old Scholars, the 2011 champions, oppose Foundation School at 6.30 p.m., and Foundation 'B' Old Scholars clash with Alleyne Alumni, the 2011 and 2013 runners-up at 9.30 p.m.

The semi-finals (March 21) and final (March 28), as is customary, will be played at Foundation School, Church Hill

Summarised scores of Monday's first quarter-final:

Combermere Old Scholars beat Lodge Old Scholars by ten runs.

Combermere Old Scholars 158-8 (20 overs) (Jonathan Drakes 75 - 56 balls, 6 sixes, 2 fours; Kamal Sealy 29, Pedro Greaves 18, Devon Goodman 12; Corey Edwards 4-17, Diego Stuart 2-38).

Lodge Old Scholars 148-6 (20 overs) (Diego Stuart 49 not out, Renaldo Holder 28, Mario Rampersaud 14, Chad Puckerin 12; Devon Goodman 2-29).

Toss: Combermere Old Scholars.

Baron's Smokehouse $100 Player-of-the-Match: Jonathan Drakes.

Umpires: Clyde Alleyne, Lawson Cummins.

Scorers: Shakira Adams & Shanique Adams (twins).

Barbados Nation article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Mia Mottley was batting on a different pitch on Sunday when she gave a brief address at the Premix and Precast Yorkshire Sports Club’s 2013 awards ceremony at the Harold Nurse Resource Centre in Hothersal Turning.

Mottley, who is the parliamentary representative for the St Michael North East constituency, where the club is located, urged the young cricketers to maintain the legacy of the club, which is now its 64th year.

Yorkshire finished second in last year’s Barbados Cricket Association’s (BCA) Division One competition, behind winners CounterPoint Wanderers, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Elite Division.

The feature address was given by principal of the Parkinson School, Jeff Broomes, who is also a former BCA board member. Club president Louis Linton delivered the welcome address.

He said he didn’t believe there were enough “quality cricketers” in Barbados to maintain all the clubs and called for the merging of neighbouring clubs.

Kemar Roach on the road to recovery

Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Barbados and West Indies fast bowler, Kemar Roach, is just about ready to don the colours of the high-profile teams raring to get back out on the pitch.

After being forced to withdraw from the West Indies tour of India last year due to a shoulder injury, Roach has been biding his time at home in Barbados.

Making his last appearance for the Brisbane Heat in the Champions League T20 in September last year, Roach had to bow out of the November tour before bowling a single ball.

Touted to spearhead the pace attack for the Windies in the sub-con-tinent, Roach was on a plane back home ahead of the start of the second Test match in Mumbai.

Taking some time out on Tuesday evening, Roach paid a visit to his alma mater, Ignatius Byer Primary, to drop morsels of wisdom and encouragement on the youngsters in the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Programme.

Himself a product of the initiative, Roach was the first member to move on to play for the West Indies. Speaking to The Barbados Advocate during his visit, Roach explained that he was recovering from his injury and decided to make the most of his downtime by giving something back to his old school.

“I had a surgery on my shoulder. I had a broken bone and that was repaired in November. I’m still recovering and will be soon back to full fitness, so it is good to come out and get out with the kids and have some fun for a little bit. It’s been a while,” he said.

Noting that he had been healing well, Roach said that he would be making himself available for selection as soon as he was ready to roll again.

“The recovery has been going well. I have been doing all of my fitness stuff, all of my therapy. I have been in the gym pretty heavy for the last two weeks. It feels good and hopefully I can be fully fit to perform for Barbados and the West Indies again. It’s up to them to select me, so I am making myself available for the end of this month,” he said.

Former Psychiatric Hospital star cricketer Henderson Cathcart to be laid to rest on March 6

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Henderson Cathcart, whose exploits as a prolific batting all-rounder for Mental (now Psychiatric) Hospital in the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Division 2 championship in the 1970s and 80s made him a household name in the local domestic game, is to be laid to rest on Thursday, March 6.

And his former captain and workmate Emmerson Howard has described him as a "classic batsman, who had all the shots".

"I had the privilege of playing and working with Henderson from 1962 and during his career he was easily one of the most outstanding cricketers in the BCA lower division," Howard told BCAcricket.org.

Nicknamed "Blues", Cathcart once scored over 1200 runs in a Division 2 season and along with another top all-rounder Luther Wiltshire, made Mental Hospital a team to be well respected.

"Henderson was a classic batsman who was a joy to watch hitting the ball through the covers and along the ground. He had all the shots but his focus was on hitting the ball along the ground whereas Luther used to enjoy hitting sixes," Howard said.

"Henderson was recognised to the extent that he was invited to the Barbados trials at Kensington Oval under the captaincy of the now Sir Everton Weekes.

"He was not only an outstanding batsman but also an exceptionally good swing bowler. In those days he was so outstanding that every team which played against Mental, especially when they came to our home ground, would want to know who is this Henderson Cathcart?

Apart from Howard and Wiltshire, Cathcart played with the likes of Ossie Gill, Anderson "Del" Holder, George Griffith, Tennyson Springer and Ricky Rudder (Ramsay).

"I thought that the image which Henderson portrayed as an outstanding cricketer influenced how people viewed the Psychiatric Hospital," said Howard, who was also the Principal Nursing Officer at Psychiatric Hospital before becoming the Chief Nursing Officer in the Ministry of Health.

"It was a very positive influence."

Cathcart was a retired nurse at the Psychiatric Hospital and was Acting Nursing officer occasionally. He died on February 24 at the age of 70 following an illness. The funeral service will be held at St. Stephen's Anglican Church at 4 p.m, with the interment in the Churchyard.

Glowing tributes were paid to Cathcart by former team-mates and fans during the weekly cricket programme Mid Wicket on the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation.

Regional 4-Day Tournament, Round II

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – This year’s Regional 4-Day Tournament continues on Friday with a full slate of matches.

Windward Islands, one of three sides that won their first round match, will be looking to create a piece of history when they travel to Port of Spain to face Trinidad & Tobago at Queen’s Park Oval.

The Windwards have had little success in the two-island republic, winning just four matches in the history of the modern Regional 4-Day Tournament, dating back to 1966.

Their previous victory came eight years ago, when they claimed an 86-run victory at Shaw Park in Scarborough, Tobago, the other half of the republic.

They have not won in Trinidad since prevailing by nine wickets 21 years ago at Guaracara Park in Pointe-A-Pierre and their previous and only victory at the Oval came 32 years ago by two wickets.

Jamaica, with whom the Windwards share the lead on the points table, will be looking to continue their dominance over Leeward Islands, the other first round winning side – and mark the occasion of the first ever floodlit, first-class match at Warner Park in St. Kitts with their fourth straight victory there.

Guyana and Barbados, two of the beaten sides from the first round, will renew their long-standing rivalry in the other match of the round at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence, Guyana.

A victory for the Guyanese would be a piece of history. They have not beaten the Barbadians on home soil for three decades – during which period they have collected three wins in their opponents’ backyard.

Hosts Guyana and Barbados looking for redemption after first round loss … Johnson replaces Beaton

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Following their first round defeats at the hands of Jamaica and Windward Islands respectively, both Guyana and Barbados will be seeking redemption when they go up against each other over the next four days in the second round of the West Indies Cricket Board’s Regional four-day tournament at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

Today’s encounter is a historic one, as it is the first time a day/night four-day match, using the pink ball, will be played at the venue which hosted several matches of that nature before, but in the 50 overs and T20 formats, with the action commencing at 15:00hrs every day.

When these two met last year at the Kensington Oval, Barbados, under the captaincy of Kirk Edwards, recorded a 93-run victory, thanks to Edwards’ first-innings ton, coupled with 85 from Jonathan Carter that saw them post 367 in their first innings and Rashidi Boucher’s second-innings 81 which enabled them to score 235 for 7 declared.

This was in the face of some controlled spin bowling from then skipper of the Guyana team, Veerasammy Permaul, who took 3 for 82, along with Steven Jacobs and Devendra Bishoo’s 2 for 62 and 84 respectively in the first innings and Jacobs’ 2 for 49 in the second.

The Bajans undergo a fielding session on the outskirts of the venue. (Photos by Adrian Narine)

Barbados bowlers, led by the fiery Miguel Cummins who took 4 for 42 and Ashley Nurse with 4 for 74, restricted Guyana to 225 in the first innings, despite Leon Johnson’s 46, 37 from Derwin Christian, 34 from Permaul and an unbeaten 30 from Ronsford Beaton.

In the second innings, Cummins, Nurse and Christopher Jordan – who played for England against the West Indies – took three wickets each for 55, 59 and 68 runs respectively as Guyana were bowled out for 284, chasing 377 for a come-form-behind victory.

Zaheer Mohammed, who was drafted in to replace Permaul, who was called away for West Indies duties during the third day, led the Guyanese batting with an unbeaten 58, while Jacobs contributed 51 and Johnson and Rajendra Chandrika, 40 each.

For this fixture, the Guyanese whose batting let them down badly in the first round where they were bowled out for 117 and 264 by the Jamaicans, would be without the services of Johnson (injury), Chandrika and Mohammed (not selected), Jacobs (CCC) and Christian (axed).

In addition to the above-mentioned quintet, they are forced to make do without their two most experienced batsmen in former Guyana and West Indies captains Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan.

Chanderpaul’s 17-year-old son Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who featured in the match against Barbados last year and Chandrapaul Hemraj, a product of the West Indies Cricket Board’s High Performance Centre, are the replacements for the esteemed duo.

To this end, the younger Chanderpaul who made his debut last year against the Leeward Islands and has to date scored 176 runs at an average of 22.00 with a highest score of 42, is expected to open the batting alongside Assad Fudadin.

Narsingh Deonarine, skipper Christopher Barnwell, Vishal Singh, who is coming off the back of a resilient second innings half-century against the Jamaicans and Hemraj will occupy the middle order, with Anthony Bramble, Permaul and his spin twin Devendra Bishoo, offering support, while leading the lower order.

The younger Chanderpaul recently returned from the Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh with the young West Indies team who finished in sixth place and for whom he was the most consistent batsman with two half-centuries and one century.

On the other hand, the 20-year-old Hemraj, who had his first stint at the WICB’s High Performance Centre last year, has played three first class matches for Guyana since making his debut against Trinidad and Tobago two years ago, aggregating 57 runs at an average of 9.50 with a topscore of 29.

He last played for Guyana in last year’s Regional four-day tournament against Jamaica at the venue for today’s encounter and judging from the present form displayed by the only fit 11 in Jamaica, he can find himself along with the younger Chanderpaul in the lineup for today’s match.

Meanwhile, former national Under-19 fast blower Raun Johnson will make his debut as a senior national player when he replaces Beaton who injured his side whilst batting in their first round match against Jamaica last week.

After the 2013 Guyana Cricket Board Inter-County four-day competition, the 22-year-old Johnson who stands at six feet, five inches tall and is a product of the Young Achievers Cricket Club, who competes in West Demerara Cricket Association tournaments, was described as impressive by national selectors.

He will share the new ball with his Young Achievers club mate Keon Joseph, with added support in the fast bowling department coming from Fudadin and Barnwell, even as Deonarine, Bishoo and Permaul take charge of the spin department.

The Barbadians, will be led by West Indies opener Kraigg Brathwaite, with support from Boucher, Roston Chase, Carter, Shai Hope, successful WICB/NAGICO Super50 skipper Kevin Stoute ands diminutive wicketkeeper batsman Shane Dowrich.

Fiery West Indies fast bowler Tino Best and Cummins will lead their bowling, backed by Carlos Brathwaite, who like Best and Cummins, can contribute healthily with the bat, while Nurse, Stoute and the lanky Sulieman Benn, will throw in their weight with the pink ball as well.

Team from Guyana: Christopher Barnwell (captain), Sewnarine Chattergoon, Assad Fudadin, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Narsingh Deonarine, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Anthony Bramble, Amir Khan, Veerasammy Permaul, Devendra Bishoo, Raun Johnson, Keon Joseph and Vishal Singh.

Barbados (from): Kraigg Brathwaite (Captain), Sulieman Benn, Tino Best, Carlos Brathwaite, Rashidi Boucher, Jonathan Carter, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Shane Dowrich, Shai Hope, Ashley Nurse, Kevin Stoute and Kenroy Williams.

Bridgetown, Barbados - A timely, unbroken sixth wicket partnership of 59 in 8.2 overs between Dwight Carter and Jabari Yarde spurred title holders Foundation 'A' Old Scholars to a five-wicket win over former champions Deighton Griffith Old Scholars in the second quarter-final of the sixth annual Christ Church Foundation School Joel Garner Twenty20 tapeball tournament at Briar Hall on Thursday night.

Chasing 124 to win in 20 overs, Foundation 'A' were in some bother at 65 for five after ten overs when Yarde joined Carter. Mixing aggression with sensible strokeplay, the pair propelled their team into the semi-finals with ten balls to spare.

Carter lived up to his reputation as a dangerous big-hitter by slamming three sixes and three fours in an unbeaten 44 off 36 balls to duly win the Baron's Smokehouse $100 Player-of-the-Match award, while Yarde scored 16 not out off 20 balls.

Opener Ricardo Yearwood contributed 27 off 30 balls with three fours and one six before he was fifth out.

The dismissal of captain Michael Matthews for nought in the fifth ball of the innings, plus two run outs compounded the early woes for Foundation 'A'

Deighton Griffith, the 2012 champions, scored 123 for six after winning the toss but would have been somewhat disappointed with the total following an opening partnership of 74 in 13.4 overs between captain Martin Nurse and Jeremy Brathwaite.

Left-hander Nurse, a former Barbados player, topscored with 38 off 46 balls including six fours, while Brathwaite made 24 from 39 deliveries. Both were removed by left-arm spinner Chad Clarke-Reifer.

Fast bowler Jofra Archer, who represented the Barbados and West Indies Under-19 teams last year, grabbed three for 12 off four overs including two maidens, while Clarke-Reifer picked up two for 28, also off four overs.

Combermere Old Scholars won the first quarter-final against Lodge Old Scholars by ten runs at Briar Hall on Monday night.

The last two quarter-final matches are slated for Friday, March 7, at Dover. RG Plumbing Coleridge & Parry Old Scholars, the 2011 champions, clash with Foundation School at 6.30 p.m. and Foundation 'B' Old Scholars meet Alleyne Alumni, the 2011 and 2013 losing finalists at 9.30 p.m.

The semi-finals (March 21) and final (March 28) will be played at Foundation School, Church Hill.

Summarised scores of Thursday's match:

Foundation 'A' Old Scholars beat Deighton Griffith Old Scholars by five wickets.

Deighton Griffith Old Scholars 123-6 (20 overs) (Martin Nurse 38, Jeremy Brathwaite 24, Adam Brown 11; Jofra Archer 3-12. Chad Clarke-Reifer 2-28).

Foundation 'A' Old Scholars 124-5 (18.2 overs) (Dwight Carter 44 not out - 36 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes; Ricardo Yearwood 27, Jabari Yarde 16 not out).

Toss: Deighton Griffith Old Scholars.

Johnson impresses on debut for Guyana

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - An impressive spell of bowling from debutant fast bowler Raun Johnson, enabled host Guyana to bowl out Barbados for 184, despite a resilient half- century from Roston Chase, just before the close of play on the first day of their second round West Indies Cricket Board Regional four day contest at the Guyana National Stadium, last night.

Johnson took 3 for 38 and received valuable support from left arm orthodox spinner Veerasammy Permaul (3 for 33), as Guyana restricted the Barbadians and at the close of play, were 35 without loss in reply, with Sewnarine Chattergoon on 14 and Tagenarine Chanderpaul 11.

The home team won the toss and chose to field first in the inaugural day/night four day match at the venue, and saw Johnson, who had earlier received his cap from Chairman of Selectors Rayon Griffith, inducing Rashidi Boucher (01) to steer one to Christopher Barnwell at slip at 6 for 1 in the fourth over.

He had the opportunity to remove Barbados’ skipper Kraigg Brathwaite (19) in his next over, but the outside edge that was found, made its way between Sewnarine Chattergoon and Assad Fudadin in the slip cordon, when the batsman was 4 and Barbados 11 for 1.

At the other end, Roston Chase got a pair of boundaries off Keon Joseph, while Brathwaite saw a thick outside edge from Barnwell, flew over the head of Tagenarine Chanderpaul at gully and made its way to the vacant third man boundary.

Spin in the form of Devendra Bishoo was introduced in the 14th over and 10 overs later, he removed Kraigg Brathwaite who was caught at the wicket by Anthony Bramble, having faced 79 balls and hitting two fours in his 92 minutes stay at the wicket, leaving Barbados on 47 for 2.

They reached their 50 from 26.2 overs, with Chase on 25 and Jonathan Carter 4 before Narsingh Deonarine, who was introduced into the attack for the final over before the luncheon interval, trapped Carter lbw for 5, as Barbados took the break on 57 for 3 with Chase on 27 and Kevin Stoute yet to score.

Guyana, who lost their first round match to defending champions Jamaica by seven wickets, struck after lunch when Stoute (00) look to take a cheeky single to Joseph at mid-off and failed to beat the fielder’s throw to Bramble, 58 for 4.

Barbados got to 100 from 49.2 overs with Chase on 45 and Dowrich 26, while Chase got his 50 from 131 balls with six fours whilst batting for 163 minutes, realizing his 50 partnership with Dowrich in the process from 15.4 overs.

Guyana removed Dowrich who turned a slower delivery from Joseph, straight to the waiting hands of Permaul at mid-on, having faced 68 balls for his 35 which included five fours from 67 minutes batting, in which he posted 59 for the fifth wicket with Chase.

After a quiet period, Chase struck Deonarine square of the wicket on the offside for his eighth four, before he got a thin edge from his 166th ball through to Bramble off Johnson at 132 for 6, after batting for 203 minutes

At tea, Barbados were 138 for 7 off 66 overs with Carlos Brathwaite on 13 and Ashley Nurse, who had replaced Chase, 4 and after the break, Johnson continued his dream debut by trapping Carlos Brathwaite lbw for 15 at 145 for 7.

Ashley Nurse, who had replaced Carlos Brathwaite, struck Barnwell for four and six off successive deliveries, while a triple strike by Permaul who removed Suleiman Benn (15) and Tino Best and Miguel Cummins without scoring catapulted the Barbadian’s innings from 184 for 7, to their final score, leaving Nurse unbeaten on 29.

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - RG Plumbing Coleridge & Parry Old Scholars and fellow northern rural team Alleyne Alumni have snatched the last two semi-final places in the sixth annual Christ Church Foundation School Joel Garner Twenty20 tapeball tournament.

On a wonderful Friday night at Dover and before another big crowd including ICC match officials who are here for the three-match T20 International series between West Indies and England at Kensington Oval on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, Coleridge & Parry withstood a stiff challenge from Foundation School to win by five runs, while Alleyne beat Foundation 'B' Old Scholars by 18 runs.

And fans who turned up for the last two quarter-final matches were not left out of the action as for the second consecutive night, tickets for the three T20 Internationals were offered by the West Indies Cricket Board and quickly gobbled up by those who were lucky to answer questions relating to the Garner T20 competition and in general.

Hailing from Ashton Hall, St. Peter, Coleridge & Parry, the 2011 champions, scored 96 for nine off 20 overs after they were sent in.

Dario Cummins topscored with 30 and Roshon Primus contributed 21.

Foundation fought gallantly before they were restricted to 91 for nine.

Seamer Joel Michael Leacock took three for 14, while Cummins picked up two for 11 to win the Baron's Smokehouse $100 Player-of-the-Match award.

Shane Ramsay supported with two for 16 and Primus, two for 21.

And in yet another fairly competitive match, Alleyne, the Belleplaine, St. Andrew side, who were runners-up in 2011 and 2013, scored 112 for nine off 20 overs after winning the toss. The topscore of 22 came from former Barbados leg-spinning all-rounder Ryan "Shines" Layne.

Amahl Nathaniel and Dwayne Alleyne each took two for 15.

Foundation 'B' were limited to 94 for eight.

Former Barbados batsman Randy Thomas had a good time behind the stumps, taking three catches and effecting a stumping.

Jamoe Carrington grabbed two for nine off four overs and was named the Baron's Smokehouse $100 Player-of-the-Match.

In the semi-finals at Foundation School, Church Hill on March 21, Combermere Old Scholars, who have never reached the final, will oppose Alleyne Alumni at 6.30 p.m. while defending champions Foundation 'A' Old Scholars clash with Coleridge & Parry Old Scholars at 9.30 p.m.

Benn, Nurse leave Guyana in a spin

Georgetown, Guyana - Sulieman Benn forced a collapse on Day 2 that could see Barbados coming from behind to beat Guyana at Providence Stadium.

At the start of Day 2, things looked bleak for the Bajan visitors, who a day earlier were skittled out for 184. The Guyanese went to Stumps on Day 1 at 35/0.

The opening stand between Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Sewnarine Chattergoon continued to prosper on the morning of Day 2. Chattergoon scored 50 while Chanderpaul hit 41 as the opening stand was worth 92 runs.

However, when the opening partnership was broken, it was almost as though that was the one obstacle standing in the way of a Barbadian first innings points win. The rest of the Guyanese batting order slid into disarray.

Click Here For Day 1 Report

From 92/1, it became 92/4, then 111/6, then 138/9, until Guyana were bowled out 140 runs. Benn had nabbed 5-28 while fellow spinner, Ashley Nurse finished with 3-51.

In a game Barbados had mostly spent Day 1 chasing, they now found themselves with a handy lead of 44 runs. In their second innings, they ensured they didn't repeat the mistakes of the first.

Though the visitors lost captain Kraigg Brathwaite cheaply, Boucher batted well, hitting 36 from 65 balls. His knock included seven boundaries. Roston Chase also got a start, scoring 30 runs before departing.

At Stumps on Day 2, Barbados were 116/4, leading by 160 runs overall. Kevin Stoute is not out on 15 while Shane Dowrich is with him on 9. The 3rd Day starts at 3pm Eastern Caribbean Time.
