Bridgetown, Barbados - The Desmond Haynes Foundation is being launched, and the first recipients will be three of the stars of last year’s Herman Griffith Primary School cricket competition.
Yesterday, former West Indies batting stalwart Desmond Haynes, the pioneer behind the scholarship drive, said that three players from the annual primary school tournament will be given educational grants.
In an exclusive interview with the WEEKEND NATION, Haynes said plans are on stream to take players in the future to colleges or universities in Australia and England, adding that the Desmond Haynes Invitational Golf Classic will be held on Sunday at the Royal Westmoreland course to raise funds for the foundation.
“When I looked at the foundation at the beginning, I recognised that there were scholarships for swimmers, athletes, tennis players and other sporting disciplines and I just thought that with cricket being our major sport, I felt that the time had come for a scholarship for cricket in the secondary schools, so that is what really drove me,” he said.
