GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Dwayne Smith’s maiden first class five-wicket haul helped Barbados Pride seal an astonishing come-from-behind two-run victory over Guyana Jaguars in their third round WICB Professional Cricket League contest here Monday.
Set a paltry 69 for victory after Barbados were dismissed for 228 in their second innings inside the first half-hour of the final day, Guyana were spectacularly bundled out for 66 at the National Stadium at Providence.
Smith, who opened the bowling, grabbed five for 17 with his right-arm seam, while new-ball partner, left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds, finished with two for 21.
Part-time seamer Jonathan Carter picked up two for 13.
Only opener Rajindra Chandrika, with 30, offered any resistance and he was one of only three batsmen who made it into double figures.
Guyana were tottering on ten for four in the sixth over as Smith and Hinds shared the wickets, and the hosts never recovered, with Smith sealing victory when he trapped Veerasammy Permaul lbw for six at 11:45 am.
No such drama was envisioned when Guyana required 35 balls to wrap up the Barbados innings, after the visitors resumed at 214 for seven in their second innings.
Left-hander Ryan Hinds added just eight to his overnight 60 before being last out, caught at mid-wicket by Ronsford Beaton off seamer Chris Barnwell who finished with two for 21.

All told, Hinds faced 143 deliveries, in just under four hours at the crease, with four fours and a six.
Starting the day hoping to extend their resistance as far into the morning as possible, Barbados managed to add 14 runs before losing their first wicket when Ashley Nurse was caught at cover by captain Vishaul Singh off left-arm spinner Permaul.
The remaining two wickets then fell with no addition to the score, as Jomel Warrican was lbw next ball to Permaul before Hinds perished six balls later.
Permaul ended with four for 75 and match figures of 12 for 101 while leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, who did not bowl on Monday, claimed four for 65.
Barbados then made early inroads. Smith had Trevon Griffith caught at mid-wicket by Kyle Corbin for one with the score on two in the second over of the innings, and Hinds then prised out Shimron Hetmyer five balls later to a catch at backward point by Jonathan Carter without scoring.
The in-form Narsingh Deonarine missed a sweep at Hinds and was adjudged lbw for without scoring, and when captain Vishaul Singh was bowled by Smith also without scoring, Guyana were tottering on 10 for four and in clear danger.
Chandrika then threatened to turn the game back in Guyana’s favour, anchoring two small partnerships to pull his side around. He put on 24 for the fifth wicket with Barbadian Raymon Reifer (11) and another 16 for the sixth wicket with Barnwell (12).
The left-handed Reifer had struck two fours and lasted 26 balls and nearly half-hour when he gave Corbin at catch at mid-off off captain and seamer Carlos Brathwaite.
Barbados then grabbed the prized wicket of Chandrika, caught at backward square by Warrican off Carter at 50 for six.
There still more than enough wickets and time in hand for Guyana to reach their target, especially with Barnwell at the wicket, but Barbados ensured there would be no such celebrations from the home side.
Once they got Barnwell, though, the floodgates opened and the last four wickets fell for nine runs.
Result: Pride won by 2 runs
Points-to-date: Pride 15 (3 bowling points + 0 batting points + 12 for victory), Jaguars 5 (2 batting points + 3 bowling points)
