Port of Spain, Trinidad - Former West Indies fast bowler Rev Dr Sir Wesley Hall and popular cricket commentator Tony Cozier will both receive Noble Spirit Awards at the Dawn of a Knight ceremony tonight at the Learning Resource Centre, UWI, St Augustine, from 7 pm, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Sir Frank Worrell’s knighthood.
Hall represented the West Indies from 1958–1969, taking 192 wickets in 48 matches and at retirement held the record for the leading wicket taker for West Indies. Hall and fellow fast bowler Charlie Griffith were known as the best opening bowling partnership in the 1960s.
Cozier is one of the most respected cricket commentators in the world and has covered more than 400 Test matches and eight World Cups. Cozier has also worked with the Australia Broadcasting Commission, All-India Radio and New Zealand and South African television to name a few.
At a press conference held at the Queen’s Park Oval yesterday, Bruce Aanensen, treasurer of the Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Committee, said Cozier and Hall have done a lot for West Indies cricket and deserve recognition.
Aanensen said: “We started the Noble Spirit Award for cricket administrators or anyone around cricket who has made a considerable impression on the game and also espoused the credentials that Sir Frank (Worrell) had, such as leadership and fair play.”
Aanensen added that youngsters in the game today should learn about Sir Frank Worrell and what he gave to West Indies cricket.
Aanensen also explained why the committee was created. “The Frank Worrell Committee was set up about eight years ago to keep the legacy and name of Sir Frank Worrell alive.” He added: “A lot of youngsters today playing cricket if you ask them about Frank Worrell they probably would not know who he is.”
Another aim of the committee is to raise funds to give young aspiring sportsmen, who are also academically inclined, scholarships to earn a university education.
