Another summer of cricketing fun and instruction came to a close last Friday as the fourth annual Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket camp ended at the Passage Road, St Michael playing field.

The final day of the camp brought together scores of boys and girls from the three camp locations – YMPC, Beckles Road, St Michael, Speightstown, St Peter playing field and Passage Road, for a day of competition and to show what they had learned.

Nearly 80 Kiddy Cricketers participated in the week-long camps around the island, which were directed by the team of accredited Kiddy Cricket coaches.

Scotiabank marketing manager Amanda Lynch-Foster said the camps were important not just for the Kiddy Cricket programme, but to groom talented young cricketers for the next level of play.

“These camps make sure the children who will be continuing in the Kiddy Cricket programme come September will keep their skills sharp. For those who are in Class 4 and about to go on to secondary school, it helps them transition to playing cricket at a higher level in the Under-13 and Grassroots programme.”

She noted that this was one of the many enhancements that had come to the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket programme over the years.

“It’s been a ‘sweet 16’ years now that Scotiabank has been sponsoring Kiddy Cricket and we have certainly seen the impact in recent times. Almost every time a new West Indies team is named at whatever level, you see Kiddy Cricket alumni are part of the squads and acquit themselves well.

“The most recent Kiddy Cricket alumni has been Roston Chase but this year alone we’ve seen other alums such as Hayley Matthews and Shamar Springer shine in World Cups for the West Indies. Setting the right foundation for our cricketers is important and something Scotiabank is proud to be a part of,” Lynch-Foster, an avid cricket enthusiast, said.
