Bridgetown, Barbados - Despite play commencing 20 minutes late due to the absence of markings on the field, this did not delay the thrust of the Powerade Angela Harris Tridents, nor their star all-rounder Deandra Dottin, who grabbed four wickets, from demolishing Sagicor UWI Blackbirds by ten wickets in the Iris Walker Memorial Twenty20 tournament.
In bright sunny conditions at 3Ws Oval last Sunday, Blackbirds never had a chance to take off, let alone fly and a total of 70 in 19.3 overs was far too inadequate.
Barbados and West Indies Women's all-rounder Shaquana Quintyne, in an opening partnership of 28 off 6.3 overs with Malissa Howard could only stand and watch as her partner was out lbw to Shanika Bruce for five in the 7th over.
Quintyne, along with Reshelle Griffith and Charlene Taitt later took the score to 47 but they, too, lost their wickets in the 9th and 12th overs.
Aaliyah D Alleyne, a student of Parkinson Secondary, and who also plays for Fusionz Boutique Passage United in the Nantional Sports Council/Inspire Sports Under-13 competition, took the prize wicket of the classy Quintyne, the only double figure contributor, in the 13th over. She was bowled off a flighted delivery on the off-stump as she played forward.
Quintyne made 22 off 36 balls with one boundary.
With the loss of Quintyne’s wicket who was proving to be stumbling block in the Trident’s quest, with four wickets down, captain Kyshona Knight gave Dottin the ball in the 14th over and bowling right-arm slow, she further destroyed the Blackbirds’ batting by taking the wickets of Brenda Maingot (nought) and Shelly-Ann Watson (nine), both being bowled.
They were soon followed by Jessica Holder-Vaughan who was brilliantly stumped by Hayley Matthews for one, and then the final icing on the cake was Ashli Antoine who was out lbw without scoring.
Dottin, a key Barbados and West Indies Womens' all-rounder, finished with four for eight off 3.3 overs. She was ably assisted by Matthews who temporarily relinquished her wicket-keeping duties to bowl very economically, with just five runs coming off her four overs, while picking up one wicket.
Tridents rushed to victory with captain Kyshona Knight, yet another national and West Indies Women's player, with 26 not out off 42 balls, and Barbados Women's cap Matthews, who made an unbeaten 35 off 38 balls, putting on 73 in 13.1 overs. The pair had also shared the wicket-keeping duties.
Quintyne was the only bowler to gain respect, conceding just nine runs off four overs.
