Georgetown, Guyana - As the Regional One Day tournament is underway, Statistician Charwayne Walker takes a look at the outstanding performance of bowlers over the years, specifically in relation to those capturing hat-tricks.
Since the inauguration of limited overs cricket in the Caribbean in (1976) six bowlers have achieved Hat-tricks.
The first man that dismissed three batsmen with consecutive deliveries in a Regional one day match is the Leeward Islands (Antigua and Barbuda) Eldine ‘Soca’ Baptiste. Playing in the (1982) Geddes Grant Harrison line finals at the A.R.G in St. John’s against Barbados. ‘Soca’ Baptiste dismissed Desmond Haynes (2), Alvin Greenidge, and Carlisle Best.
The Following year (1983) the late Great Malcolm Marshall emulated Baptiste’s feat in a fiery spell against Guyana at the (Mecca) Kensington Oval. The master’s victims were William White, Kamal Singh and Roger Harper. Nine years later in1992 Leeward Islands (Nevisian) John ‘the Dentist’ Maynard added his name to the list against Trinidad & Tobago at Grove Park, but is performance was in a losing cause.
The next name on the Hat-trick list was leg spinner Rajendra Dhanraj. His Hat-trick led Trinidad & Tobago to a memorable nail biting victory in October 1996 against Guyana at GCC Bourda in the Shell Sandals Finals.
Dhanraj’s Hat-trick victims were Ramnaresh Sarwan, Kenneth Wong and Roger Harper.
Bourda again was the venue when Keiron Pollard took his Hat-trick against the Leeward Islands in 2008 November.
His victims were Wilden Cornwall, Devon Thomas and Justin Athanaze. The last man that took a Hat-trick at the Regional One day Level is Leeward Islands, Antigua & Barbuda leg Spinner Anthony Martin. Playing against the Windward Islands at Sabina Park in October 2010. Martin’s victims were Lynden James, Shane Shillingford and Mervin Matthew.
