Barbados Cricket Association article.
Bridgetown, Barbados - Defending three-time champions Nicholls Baking Combermere were four without loss after one ball against Queen’s College when rain forced play to be abandoned 85 minutes before the re-scheduled close at 5:10 p.m. on the opening day of the three-day BCA LIME Under-15 Final at Desmond Haynes Oval.
The not out batsmen were Seth Agard and Matthew Forde, both yet to score. The only ball from Ajani Ince to Agard was a very fast lifting delivery that flew over wicket-keeper Dijon Hunte’s head and went for four byes.
Immediately afterwards, a heavy and sharp shower which lasted about ten minutes swept across the ground at 3: 15 p.m and forced the players off the field.
On inspection, the umpires surprisingly ruled wet run-ups at both ends were unsuitable and play was officially called off at 3:45.
Earlier, Queen’s College invited to bat made 129 for five from their allotted 35 overs. Captain and opener Nico Reifer, topscored with 65 in 115 minutes off 83 balls. He hit three fours and one six.
Reifer and the diminutive wicket-keeper/batsman Dijon Hunte (30) put on 81 for the first wicket in 26.4 overs.
Reifer began with a boundary through cover off Kai Rollins in the first over and in his next over flicked him behind square for another four.
With the total on 24 and his tally on six Hunte was dropped down the leg-side off medium-pacer Rollins.
Off-spinner Nicholas Austin replaced Rollins at the southern end and Reifer greeted him with a pull over mid-wicket for six. After 25 overs it was 76 without loss with Reifer on 41 and Hunte 28.
National under-15 off-spinner Indal Persaud who conceded a miserly 18 runs from his seven overs switched to the south. Hunte lost his composure and was lured out his crease by Persaud and wicket-keeper Jabarry Doughlin who earlier put him down, completed an easy stumping. He batted for 85 minutes and faced 95 balls without a boundary.
On his dismissal, came the first interruption for the day at 1:35 and an early tea was taken.
Reifer’s Barbados under-15 teammate Ince smashed Jemel Miller down the ground for four. Reifer reached his half-century from 74 balls in 96 minutes with two fours and a six.
Rollins returned towards the end and Reifer cut hard to point for a boundary. Ince was caught and bowled by Rollins from a powerful hit for 16 . Eventually Reifer was caught at deep mid-wicket by Rollins off medium-fast Matthew Forde in the penultimate over. In a quest for quick runs Jazz Griffith and Jamahl Burke were run out.
Their bowling was tight throughout and Combermere delivered only nine overs of pace. Another Barbados under-15 player and captain Zidane Clarke seven overs cost a mere 13 runs despite not taking a wicket with his off-breaks.
