Bridgetown, Barbados - After vandals stole the statue of Sir Everton Weekes from the 3Ws monument in the park opposite the UWI Cave Hill Campus, local artists and corporate Barbados banded together to ensure that the image of the cricket legend was returned to its rightful place.

The unveiling of Weekes’ likeness was done at a rededication ceremony yesterday during which the importance of immortalising heroes of Weekes’ calibre was underscored.

“Sir Everton Weekes’ statue was removed well over a year ago and we have to thank Arch Edwards and Francis Ross of Caribbean Wax, who graciously gave of their time and experience to rebuild.

This came of course with help of corporate Barbados – ICBL, Nation Publishing, Sagicor and others – who stepped to the plate and as representative for St. James South where this monument is located, I want to thank all those who got on board with this initiative…

This is much more than a statue being displayed, this is the epitome of how one captures outstanding men, in this case cricketers,” said Minister of Industry, International Business, Commerce and Small Business Development, Donville Inniss.

The Minister also noted that while no security features, such as cameras, are in place to ensure the unfortunate incident is not repeated, he was quite confident that as long as Barbadians are reminded of the importance of features such as these to our civilisation, then better sense and national pride will prevail.
