Barbados Cricket Association article.
Bridgetown, Barbados - There were two very significant results in Series 2 of the 2015 BCA Sagicor General Twenty20 Championship.
Police won for only the second time in their last 18 matches, while Maple, who jointly boast of the most titles (two) with Sagicor Life UWI, suffered a very rare defeat against a lower division side since the eight-year Championship was expanded three years ago.
In the only match where less than ten wickets fell, Police beat Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) by 17 runs at Weymouth in Zone C.
The last time Police had triumphed in the Championship was in 2013 (Series 6) - by seven wickets over LIME at Wildey.
And ironically, Maple, having lost the sponsorship this season of an insurance company which stood by them for the last eight seasons - Consumers' Guarantee Insurance - went under by seven wickets to Yorkshire, a team backed for the first time by a long-standing insurance broker - Insurance & General Services Ltd.
After only one half-century was recorded in the opening round by ESA Field Pickwick's Shai Hope, the new West Indies Test batsman, five batsmen scored more than 50 and a few others got into the 40s in brisk time.
It was also another idle day for the opponents of the three representative school teams - Guardian General Barbados Youth, Caribbean Alliance/Akobah Gardens Foundation and Nicholls Baking Combermere - as the telling boycott by the Barbados Association of Principals of Public Secondary Schools (BAPPS) over a new selection policy.
ZONE A
At Waterford 'A':
Lee's Bistro Carlton won by default from Nicholls Baking Combermere who did not field a team because of a boycott by the Barbados Association of Principals of Public Secondary Schools (BAPPS).
At Bank Hall:
Record four-time finalists ICBL Empire, who have won the title only once, lost to a resurgent LIME by two wickets.
Having been agonisingly beaten by Carlton by four runs on Saturday, it was another close match for Ashley Nurse's team but they managed to triumph with just two balls remaining in pursuit of 141 in 20 overs.
Cyprian Payne and Jason Hinds again gave LIME a solid start, putting on 56 in 8.5 overs before the latter fell to experienced seamer Tennyson Roach for 31 off 26 balls.
The dismissals of veteran Randy Thomas for nine to off-spinner Roston Chase off the last ball of the 12th over and Payne off the third ball of the next over, stumped by skipper Jamal Smith off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican for the topscore of 35 off 36 deliveries, pulled Empire with the score 77 for three.
The match remained tight with the next five wickets falling at 95 (Nurse (14), 14.5 overs), 112 (Amory Holder (15), 16.2 overs); 126 (Matthew Greaves (11), 17.4 overs); 131 (Kevin Callender (4), 18.3) and 140 (Devon Phillips (13), 19.3 overs), and it was left to off-spinner Daley Hurley with the task of finishing the match. He duly hit medium-pacer Kevin Stoute, the Barbados Super50 captain to the long-on boundary.
There were two wickets each for Warrican, Stoute and swing bowler Andre Evelyn for 22, 26 and 29 respectively.
Empire made 140 four four after they were sent in.
National player Chase topscored with 33 off 29 balls, Kodi Phillips got 31 from 28 deliveries and Smith 20 off 22 balls.
Off-spinner Nurse took two for 18 off four overs to show why he is one of the top bowlers in the shortest version of the game.
At 3Ws Oval:
